- The ultimate backyard oasis, swimming pool and amazing aquascape. Micky's journey to building his 500,000 Gallon Pool in his own backyard started 29 years ago. Perhaps the largest homemade backyard pool in the world. Built over 29 years, first with a plastic liner, then a rubber one, and finally with spray on concrete, Micky has spared no expense making his dream of a massive pool come to life.

Very Cool, i would love to talk to mickey about his filtration system and how he built it.
checkout nano bubbles for filtration
That’s absolutely amazing and looks like so much fun!!
That's a paradise for kids. His kids and grandkids are lucky little fellas!
They definitely seemed very happy. What a gift indeed!
Ehhh. The upkeep and maintainence costs will haunt them. Lol. He has a lot of money to do that. Will his kids and grandkids spend the money to keep it up ?
Kids probably hated that pool, because dad forced them to work on his hobby project every weekend ^^
@@psychotropnilachtan8869 I disagree. He taught them valuable lessons having them work on the pool. I think one of them will take over when he's gone, and keep the dream alive. Well, I hope that's the case. Would be a shame to let this disappear.
@@finishfirst4580 They could open it up to public rental later to help pay for maintenance and ensure more people get to make use of it.
Living at the TN babtist childrens home, this was the highlight of every summer for us. Loved going there. Mr. and Mrs. Thorton were some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Thanks for having us every summer.
Awwww
he built it for everyone to enjoy and that man has a heart of gold because of that. not just for him and his family but for everyone to use. takes a special person to want to do that.
He said it himself, he didnt build it for everyone. He had dreams as a kid to do it.
“Well that won’t be my problem” what a legend.
And legends never die 100
"From the little dream as a kid until now. Almost 60 years later now." Wow, what a legend! Few live a life worth reading about. What a pleasure to learn about Micky
And most importantly they love Jesus.
That sand filter is really ingenious using the hydrostatic pressure of all the water above it. This guy is a true renaissance thinker. Respect 🙌🏾
Spent some of my free time this summer helping with the upkeep of the gardens. Mr. Micky and Mrs. Jane are just as amazing in person as they seem in this video! They use their pool as an opportunity to meet new people and share Jesus’ love with them. Awesome pool, and a lovely couple 🤍 Glad that someone took notice of them and their hard work.
Glad you enjoyed the video! We had a great time out there filming it. So beautiful!
Is this the Thorntons pool?
@@sweetwater_0041yes it is
@@sweetwater_0041 obviously.
I still think it's amazing you don't have a few million subscribers yet. Great quality production and neat stories!
He's only posted 30 videos so not bad on the channels subscriber count.
Thank you! I'm a full time TV editor, so I do this on the side with a very small team. We do have more episodes that we've already filmed coming soon though! Hoping to get out and film more soon as well. Cheers- Guy (Producer, Coolest Thing)
I still think it’s amazing this comment doesn’t have a few thousand likes yet. It is a very accurate portrayal of this channel.
@@CoolestThingWell thank you and your team, SO MUCH! You are a great film maker, I COMPLETELY forget about everything else when I watch your Coolest Thing videos! ❤❤❤
I'd so loved to visit it. You should make a little 2 to 3 unit for a bed and breakfast? Just a thought? Awesome job my friend.
Amazing work. Been in the pool industry for 17 years in Atlanta. This is the coolest pool I've ever seen. Genius design on the gravity fed sand filter system.
One mans dream turned into reality, what a legend.
It's truly an amazing pool. Unreal!
I wish i was his neighbor. I'd be in that thing every summer. I love swimming in big deep pools like this.
This is a perfect example of one cool ass guy just doing what he loves for his family and community. Respect.
I think you are the coolest and smartest grand dad ever. So awesome to see your creativity giving folks so much 💜 joy.
That’s what I call a swimming pool. Amazing 🤩
Loved the 'ducks in a row', what a great idea! 👍
We agree! Such a clever way to do it. Also apparently it’s a “duck repellent” as well. Micky told us it’s unusual for ducks to sit in a row, so ducks flying over assume they are sick and don’t land on the pool.
The amazing part is that by one man achieving his dream now hundreds of kids have a chance to live that dream. This man is a gift to his community.
What a cool man, father and grandpa!!!
If I lived there I'd never leave my house. That is a dream come true. Wow!
Wow what a throwback! I had this video randomly show up on my suggested videos and thought, that looks familiar... I hovered over the thumbnail and saw Micky and thought, I recognize him too! I grew up and went to church with Micky's son. We had a few church parties at his house and got to swim in this pool about 20 years ago. It is as incredible as it looks in this video. And so cool to see all the old videos from building it over the years. I agree, the rope swing was way more fun than the diving board!
WOW now thats a pool id Love to have. Like swimming in the middle of an ocean or lake.... but without the sharks, or worry of whats underneath you hahaha. Truly amazing, and the right way to have a pool party
THIS GUY, gets it. fun, is what he gets
That's the ultimate look of contentment on his face right there. Bless you and your family.
This guy is smarter than you actually think. Dude’s first thought was to call the zoo to ask who made their exhibits… you can’t get smarter than that.
Lol yeah, in the story, it was his "first thought". Him telling a 29yr story won't begin with "after weeks of trying to build the scenery with no idea, my wife said to call the zoo"
@@MrSkrifle thanks for that, that put me ahead in life, reading that moronic comment. 🤣🤣🤣💀
@@MrSkrifle you know how people chime in with absolutely nothing productive to say, yeah that’s what that was….
Now this is the true definition of an unselfish family man.
I love that you have shared this with many over the years that’s truly commendable
I love that you had 29 years of memories before your final product
It's the coolest thing I've ever seen in a backyard, that's for sure!
The coolest thing... is your sharing it. and memories are priceless.
My hat is off to you sir. Epic pool! Your kids and grand kids are blessed to have such a chuck of paradise in their dad/gramps back yard.
Wow! This is amazing. What memories he created with his family, friends and community.
The main question I'd have for him is if he'd considered a pond and why he preferred a huge pool. Ponds are more complicated, getting the balance right with plants and fish, but at that size it's easier and it avoids the cost of using pounds of chlorine daily. While it's extremely rare to have a pool this size at a private residence, ponds this size are much more common. Regular testing and work to make sure they're safe to swim in doesn't sound like more work and expense than a pool this large.
But it is cool that he built an actual pool. Different vibe, different water, better for different things. Unlike myself, he grew up swimming in a pool frequently. So I understand that he loves pools. What he built is neat! I love the DIY spirit and the filter system is clever! The graphic really helped me understand it.
So what happened when he needed to change all the water? Did he pump it all out and pour it down the drain to the municipal sewer or what?
Thanks for the video! I appreciate the effort that went into it. It's a great presentation of the pool.
Thank you! For the water, he said it's only been drained 3 times. He told us he usually drains it on his property and waters the pasture behind the pool. When he vacuums it, he does the same.Cheers!
the clarity, the depth, the sand. everything is perfect!
What an amazing family! Cool dad for sure. I hope whoever inherits it cares for it has a heart like he does.
that guy must love watching his family of generations swimming and having the best time ever. awesome.
That’s beautiful. There is something so satisfying about crystal clear water.
What an incredible undertaking! This is fantastic! I love that guy too, he's so chill but so knowledgeable.
I can't believe you don't have a slide. People and there passions. So cool so many enjoyed it. Such a long time working on something.

WOW!!! That is all I can say. WOW! This man (and his family) must enjoy this very much.

Micky what an amazing piece of work you have completed. Impressive.
This is what humans are capable of. This guy definitely is leaving behind something special.
Best pool I ever seen. Great to see you let the local kids enjoy it aswell. Brilliant. Very expensive but brilliant.🙏
Paradise for this family how cool that’s one badass man right there I appreciate his hard work and dedication
Wow! Every kids dream to have fun on. And an adults dream to enjoy as a home owner. 😊
I waited until I was in my mid 60's to build a swimming pool and wished I had done it when we built our home in 1989. It is no where as big as this beauty, but it is enclosed with a nice sitting TV area & solar heated. I do love all the rock work around your pool and the sand bottom. That is a super great touch. Shalom
Great LEGACY !!!!!
To build something that gives JOY to others!! Is a great legacy!!
I admire you sir !!

CONGRATULATIONS, what a fantastic vision, what great dedication to a passion and clearly it brings an incredible amount of joy to you as the builder and to all who see it, swim in it and have fun in it and to just sit and watch it. WELL DONE ITS BEAUTIFUL. Thank You for sharing it with us 🙏🏻👍🏻👏🏻❤️🙋🏻♀️🇦🇺
Sir,
This pool project is on another level. As your moderation continued, I came to the part that explained why it looked like a wildlife park/zoo. You and your wife have good instincts on this project. Hopefully, someday your descendants will for some type of trust or legal document to manage this oasis for future grand- kiddos to enjoy, and help maintain.
Wow! Looks very natural.
He is so awesome! I thoroughly enjoyed this. 😊❤
Seems a lovely man, making a lot of people happy.
Wow, what a legacy!!!

This is probably the best video on RUclips
My dream is to have a tiny plunge pool even they cost a fortune. He seems like a really nice man. Looks amazing. Love it.
that filtration system is genius and its because its simple........ simple solutions that can last a lifetime or longer are ideas that fit in genius.
Awesome buy far best pool I've ever seen great job lots of patients 👍
Totally awesome! What a cool guy.
Every since I can remember I’ve absolutely loved water. As a kid we had an above ground pool for a couple years. It’s always been a dream of mine to have a backyard pool. My fiancé thinks it’s a waste of money, but to me it’s been my dream. I said I’d pay for it all and maintain it myself. I just sent him this video saying I’ve upgraded my standards. 😆
Beautiful so great
Dude- AWESOME work.
Wow!! Nice job!!
This man is a genius! Wow
Good for him. That's freaking awesome
