    The Flying Nun was an American situation comedy produced by Screen Gems for ABC based on the 1965 book The Fifteenth Pelican, written by Tere Rios. It starred Sally Field as Sister Bertrille. The series originally ran on ABC from September 7, 1967, to April 3, 1970, producing 82 episodes, including a one-hour pilot episode. Developed by Bernard Slade, the series centered on the adventures of a community of nuns in the Convent San Tanco in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
    The comic elements of the storyline were provided by the flying ability of a novice nun, Sister Bertrille. In the hour-long series pilot, Chicago native Elsie Ethrington arrives in San Juan from New York City after her arrest for having been involved in a protest; she then adopts the name of Sister Bertrille. It is also later learned (in the episode "My Sister, The Sister") that Sister Bertrille comes from a family of physicians and is the only one who did not follow in their footsteps. She became a nun, joining the Convento San Tanco, after being impressed by the missionary work of her aunt, and broke up with her boyfriend of eight months, a toy salesman. Sister Bertrille could be relied upon to solve any problem that came her way by her ability to catch a passing breeze and fly.
    This was generally attributed to her weighing under 90 pounds (41 kilograms), high winds at the Convent high on the ocean bluffs, and the large, heavily starched cornette that was the headpiece for her habit. (The cornette was based on one worn until the middle 1960s by the Daughters of Charity, although Sister Bertrille was never said to belong to that order. Indeed, the order which included the Convento San Tanco was never specified in the series.) Her flying talents caused as many problems as they solved. She explains her ability to fly by stating, "When lift plus thrust is greater than load plus drag, anything can fly."
    The reason behind that statement was that Sister Bertrille weighed only 90 lbs.; in one episode, she tries to gain weight so she could stay grounded, but the attempt failed. Additionally, in the first season episode "Young Man with a Cornette," she specifically tells a young boy who intended to use her cornette to fly that there were many factors other than her weight (which was distributed differently than that of the boy) that made her flying possible. The only time she was unable to take off was when heavy rains or storms occurred and caused her starched cornette to lose its shape or when she had to wear something that would keep her grounded at all times.

      So why did they muck it up with such an absurd premise? Why not make it a show with those good qualities and Sally’s excellent personality traits and let those carry it? I’ll bet her as an idealistic and upbeat nun minus the aviation would have been a very successful show.

    It was 50 years ago today that ABC aired the final episode of 'The Flying Nun.' The final episode was "No Tears for Mrs. Thomas." It sure was the last time we saw Sister Bertrille (Sally Field) walked up the steps, walking and she looked back before the closing credits faded to black. Right now, Sally Field is the only surviving cast member of the 1967-1970 series.

      I think it was also that she felt she was not taken seriously by Hollywood, after years of comedic roles from this one to her roles in the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies. If I recall correctly, when she finally did win an Oscar for a dramatic role, she broke down in tears in her acceptance speech, telling the Academy, "You like me - you really like me!" or something to that effect.

The FBI theme could have been developed into a symphonic standalone piece. The elements of such an endeavor were compressed into the FBI theme. I fiddled (HA!) with developing the music further in my computer, but have so many other music projects, that I set it aside. At one time, he was the head of 20th Century Fox music department. Sally Field was/is a beacon of hope to all young actors and actresses who are just starting out in the business. Don't despair if you are trapped, for the moment, in a nothing job, playing a dancing carrot, or a leprechaun who's been exiled from Ireland by a witch's curse and is now working as a grade-school teacher in Flatbush. First Sally was Gidget; then she plumbed the depths-of-all-depths in this peerlessly silly show; but at long last she burned up the television screen as the lead in "Sybil" (which really put her on the map); and then finally, at long last, she stood onstage at the Oscars, not once, but twice, accepting TWO Best Actress Oscars in succession. Just promise us all that, when your time comes, you won't afflict us with your version of "YOU LIKE ME! YOU REALLY LIKE ME!"

    • @NickB1967
      @NickB1967 2 года назад

      Awesome analysis! I forgot all about that! But yes, after years and years silly roles from Gidget to The Flying Nun to Smokey and the Bandit, I think Sally Field getting an Oscar for a dramatic role really caused her to melt down at the Awards.

    • @brianarbenz1329
      @brianarbenz1329 9 месяцев назад

      Her acceptance speech was touching. It meant she had overcome terrible obstacles (her father died in WWII and the man who became her stepfather sexually abused her).
      Her Oscar speech was a statement of finally feeling good about herself.

    One can remember this from the 60s and 70s. Still prime time TV fare in the 1970s. I remember this also from the early 1990s. It was given a solid run on TV where I was, circa '92 - '93, and basically still prime time even then, like late afternoon, early evening. My Three Sons also going then, but, as I noted to someone at the time, The Flying Nun being better, being slicker, more polished. But they got decades of TV mileage from these 1960s TV projects, for want of something subsequent of sufficient standard.

    What was really odd is that the Catholic Church of the time actually approved of the show, given its positive depictions of the nuns and lighthearted comedy. Sister Bertrille (a then very young Sally Field) could be relied upon to solve any problem that came her way by her ability to catch a passing breeze and fly.
    This was also a reference to her previous TV show "Gidget", where Sally Field, as a short and petite woman, was seen as the "girl midget" or "Gidget".
