The opening puts life in perspective. One minute you are starting out a new life. Meeting new friends and gaining new experiences. In a flash of an eye, its all gone. The entire cast has passed. Life on Earth is too short.

I see my Mom every time I hear this ! Thankfully she is still here in 2023 and when I do hear this I call her and tell her how much I love her and how much I appreciated her struggles in the 70’s after the divorce. Like this show, back then it was a lot like that for my mom even though in the show Marry was single.
She had to make it on her own without a husband and she did it all very well. Many of the stories written for the show could be applied to real life struggles back then and it was easy to relate to it. I suppose that is a large reason the show lasted so long and is still liked today. I believe we grew up in the last best decades in America as today I do not recognize our country.
I want to go back and do it all over ....The 70’s and 80’s were my decades and they were the best years of my life. America was absolutely a different place back then. It was still a treat then to get 30 cents from mom and walk uptown to the gas station to get a Coca-Cola or Pepsi or to the ice cream shop and get a CMP ice cream. We truly did not lock our doors and stayed out till after dark with our bikes and on Halloween we all went trick-or-treating without our parents at night in the cold and it was great fun.. In the summer we played outside all day and all night, The only way my mom got us home to eat was a big brass bell she had outside the sliding glass doors that she would ring to get out attention to come home for dinner. I remember wonderful 4th of July celebrations when mom took us to the ball park and we laid on blankets to watch the fireworks. And of course Christmas and even though it was tuff for my mom raising us she always made sure we had a great holiday . Even Easter was special in America back then... as we get older we started to go see the movies and we really did have the best movies. ( Jaws, Close Encounters, , Raiders of the lost Ark, James bond, Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, Predator, planet of the apes, E.T, The terminator, The goonies, Friday the 13th, Batman, Back to the future . ...To name a few.....The TV show line up on the networks were fabulous ( this was before you got 500 channels like you do today and still nothing on is good) we had Dallas, knots Landing, Falcon crest. And every night of the week a network would compete and have for example, Monday night at the movies! Tuesday night at the movies ! and they would show a major movie release. we had real holidays were we all got together and enjoyed each other’s company. We had great stores that are all but gone now in 2023 and great movie theaters and of course the MALLS! It was not the 80’s without a Mall. My very first few jobs were at the mall. First Macdonald’s and then The Gap!. Yes sir those days were GREAT! and I am very lucky to have lived them .... today I don’t even see kids outside and everyone is in fear for saftey from crazy people.... God Bless us all ! (If you can even say that anymore)

Excepting the invoking of Friday The 13th as a "good movie" (?) I appreciated everything you wrote. My grandmother experienced much difficulties and hardships rearing her family after her husband's early premature death too. She was a wonderful human being and my calendar @ Christmas Eve remains marked for late, great grandmother's birthday! She-and her story- are missed! 1:33

I've always found the opening bars of the theme to be really interesting. It almost sounds like it shouldn't work with the rest of it, but it does. And I mean that stylistically speaking. It's dramatic, and it gets the attention of viewers. Perhaps that's why it was written the way it was. I've never heard it explained one way or another.

The first season theme is too dreary....”How will you make it on your own/this world is awfully big/and girl this time you’re all alone”....the second one is perfect, and that’s why it’s more memorable. It’s breezy, cheerful and fits the tone of the show much better.

A few posts have been made about the current situation in Minneapolis compared to the city of Mary Richards.
Mary Tyler Moore was generally a liberal Republican in her youth but was more liberal during the MTM Show days going as far as making an ad for the reelection of Jimmy Carter in 1980 (the ad is here on RUclips).
In her final days she became quite conservative, watching a lot of Fox according to her old co-star Ed Asner (who, as well known, was very Left).
Whatever her politics, MTM is a legend.

When I was 10 thru 13 or so, I used to watch the MTM show each week and be inspired by things like... how, in the opening, she strode confidently along the lake (I wanted to look like that when I walked). And her character was always calm-but-offbeat in the face of her far-more-offbeat surroundings. I always got a great vibe from this show.

Its fun to listen to the definitive version here and then go back to the original pilot/S1 opening lyrics. It’s all “Maybe”s and “Might”s, really hedging their bets at first 🤣

Some irony seeing Ted Knight and Gavin Macleod together. Knight didn't just make numerous appearances, on "The Love Boat". One episode, had him play a rival Captain, from another ship. Their crews got into athletic competition, against one another.

@@Whocares17032 I wish it wasn't true but now all the original cast of the Mary Tyler Moore show and The Golden Girls have passed on RIP to all of those Legends of Television. Sadly I was reminded of the of actor who preceded Betty White in Death the late Ed Asner as I was watching Cobra Kai as Episode 1 ended with an Memorial to him as he played Johnny Lawrence stepfather Sid on the show...Crazy Right. He's 91 she was 99 both were working and going strong until the end. There is a party in heaven in right now and Betty White is Guest of Honor.
