- Lost in Space is an American science fiction television series, created and produced by Irwin Allen, which originally aired between 1965 and 1968.
The series follows the adventures of the Robinson's, a pioneering family of space colonists who struggle to survive in the depths of space.
The show ran for 83 episodes over three seasons, the first of which was filmed in black and white.
On October 16, 1997, the United States is gearing up to colonize space. The Jupiter 2, a futuristic saucer-shaped spacecraft, stands on its launch pad undergoing final preparations. Its mission is to take a single family on a five-and-a-half-year journey to an Earth-like planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri.
The Robinson family consists of Professor John Robinson (Guy Williams), his wife Maureen (June Lockhart), and their three children: Judy (Marta Kristen); Penny (Angela Cartwright); and Will (Billy Mumy). The family is accompanied by U.S. Space Corps Major Donald West (Mark Goddard). The Robinson's and Major West are to be cryogenically frozen for the voyage, and they are set to be unfrozen when the spacecraft approaches its destination.
Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris), Alpha Control's doctor, is revealed to be a saboteur working on behalf of an unnamed nation. After disposing of a guard who catches him aboard the spacecraft, Smith reprograms the Jupiter 2's B-9 environmental control robot (voiced by Dick Tufeld) to destroy critical systems on the spaceship eight hours after launch. Smith becomes trapped aboard at launch, however, and his extra weight throws the Jupiter 2 off course, causing it to encounter asteroids.
This, plus the robot's rampage, causes the ship to prematurely engage its hyperdrive, and the expedition becomes hopelessly lost in the infinite depths of outer space. Smith's selfish actions and laziness frequently endanger the expedition, but his role assumes less sinister overtones in later parts of the series.
The open and closing theme music was written by John Williams, a composer notable for creating the music for the film Star Wars. Williams was listed in the credits as "Johnny Williams".
Season three featured a new score which was considered more exciting and faster tempo. The opening music was accompanied by live action shots of the cast, featuring a pumped-up countdown from seven to one to launch each week's episode.
In 1998, New Line Cinema produced a film adaptation. The 1998 film includes a number of homages to the original television series.
On October 10, 2014, it was announced that Legendary TV was developing a new reboot of Lost in Space for Netflix with screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. On June 29, 2016, Netflix ordered the series with 10 episodes. The series debuted on Netflix on April 13, 2018. It was renewed for a second season on May 13, 2018.
This Video is not targeted for children. It is aimed at adults who remember the original series and it's reruns.

Absolutely love the second theme! Get goosebumps when the music starts after the countdown -- John Williams is a genius!
Definitely.
You mean JOHNNY WILLIAMS!!! LOL
And he wrote both of them. Man is a legend
John Williams what ever happened to him i think hes written a couple of tunes later
@spencercox2684 He was Johnny because there was an actor named John Williams😅 Didn't want to confuse them.
How often is there a legend recognized in his/her own time? John Williams is LEGEND.
Every 0.001 second on RUclips
gee, as soon as i heard that theme song i went back in time to a child nearly makes me cry.......yes we were lucky then....
Yes, we were.
Agree, the theme took me back to a 6 yr old excited & at times terrified watching this programme, the music was fabulous. Great times later to come home from school with as mentioned Voyage to Bottom of sea, Lost in Space. Thunderbirds etc..great for our imaginations and easy watching tv...
Me too 😢
I grew up watching Lost in Space in the 60s. That first theme almost brings me back to that time: sitting in front of the TV ( black and white ) with my Will Robinson shirt on , mom in the kitchen cooking, little sis sitting next to me. Oh God, if I had one wish it would be to go back there again and start over . They all passed away. Life can be so beautiful yet so sad !!!!
As of December 11, 2023, June Lockhart (Maureen Robinson), Marta Kristen (Judy Robinson) Angela Cartwright (Penny Robinson), and Bill Mumy (Will Robinson) were all quite alive. Mark Goddard ( [Major)] Don West), passed away in October 2023. (Source: Wikipedia)
Loved reading your comment. Hearing and seeing these credits took me back as well. Just an amazing feeling.
you’re 90 years old?
Here in Australia!!! Lost in space was shown in prime time for 20 to 25 years!!! Amazing
:)
And in Canada we got Skippy the Bush Kangaroo
Wow! Here in the states, we got it in reruns in the afternoons sometime after school was out. Saw it over and over for a few years and that was it. I guess we have access now with cable and stuff, but lucky you.
I remember I was staying with my grandparents one weekend. They didn’t have internet or any cable just an antenna. One of the channels we got was a station called Metv and showed classic tv shows. It was a Saturday night me and my grandpa were watching that channel and this show came on and it forever gave me my love of classic TV and cinema. I am 22 but I love shows like Lost in Space, Gunsmoke, Chips, Andy Griffith.
I have such fond memories of coming home from school, and watching reruns of "Lost in Space". It was my favorite program as a youngster, and continues to hold a special place in my heart.
'Journey'-Through The-ROBOT Was My-Favourite-EPISODE!!!??? >(*U^)< *Wink*
@@WRETCHEDAVION One of my favorites, as well. I also like some of the B&W episodes, like "Mr. Nobody", "The Keeper", (the shows only two part episode), and the one where Dr. Smith wears something on his head and gets anything he requests, until the "bill comes due". LOL!

We were so lucky as kids in the 60s. Lost in Space, Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Fantastic kids shows that fired your imagination, you watched them and then went outside and played with your friends pretending to be your heroes. So many great memories of a happy childhood.
TV that challenges kids imaginations.
uhh..you forgot Star Trek...
Sven524 Could not agree with you more.😃 You listed some of my all-time favorites. I was a child of the 1980s and all of these fantastic shows were in syndication. I would add Batman, Gilligan’s Island & Star Trek. Would watch them all then get together with friends and pretend to be all of those characters.😊 It was the best.
Sven524 K may not have been born in the 60's, but I saw this series on the Sci-fi channel with my dad in the early half of the 90s when Cable was a big deal. I remember he and I got up early, played chess and then 45 minutes before the bus picked me up, I recall him and I laughing at Dr. Smith as the episodes went on. Good time memories 😊
I was born in 85 and was privelaged to see all these shows when I was a kid as well...and then also want outside and played.
Actually broke bread with the cast of LOS, won a contest at a show,,, nicest, kindest people ever,, time of my life.
Often thought the second intro was one of the best ever done for any TV show. The countdown matched to the buildup of notes, leading to the main theme. Excellent work from Williams!
His love for brass was evident from very early on. :)
Just loved the "countdown theme".7,6,5,4,3,2..1. Be watching opening scenes, then suddenly theme comes up. Loved it
Yes! Best ever.
Yes! It truly adds to the suspense of the opening situation while at the same time being a Bad A$$ intro to the music!
That always got me excited too!
Absolutely you nailed it! I told the whole art department about it in the high school
It had more of a "Mission Impossible" influence than the first opening theme song
I loved that first theme - brilliant and chilling.
Seriously .... zero in on the piccolo part. INSANE and perfectly executed.
LOVE THESE GUMMIES!
The piccolo playing in Gomer Pyle usmc is badass as well
This is one of the reasons I, as a musician, love RUclips. So many opportunities to re-experience so many child-hood memories and musical inspirations. So much good music on TV and movie soundtracks that people never notice.
Yes, I think TV themes in the 60s/70s were quite good, in retrospect. You have to create interest in about 45 seconds.
Then may I recommend the first theme from Man From U.N.C.L.E. I played baritone horn, trumpet, and french horn in junior and senior high school..
I love the second theme with the countdown leading into a fanfare.
Yeah, that is great music.
It is amazing.
It makes me want to dance.
The second theme really grabbed your attention. Great memories
It's as fresh in my mind as if it was yesterday.
Always loved this show 😤
As someone who played french horn, trumpet, and baritone horn in symphonic bands and wind ensemble the themes were exceptional. Hearing the trumpet lead is wonderful. The flute and piccolo part is beautiful. The french horn is awesome. And to hear the tuba in conjunction with the string bass is what sets it in motion. The second theme was very well written with the countdown number starting from 7. The flute, piccolo, and bells played part is absolutely striking..The french horn soli is cool..I m a band theme fan for sure. I would love to see the written score to both..
I loved the tuba. I went on to play bass, both upright and electric
I always love that countdown. I’m in my 60s I specifically went on RUclips to look for this countdown I found it and I’m so happy. It still gives me chills.
Johhy Williams scored the music.....name sound AMILLIAR😅😅😅😅
Very true-the countdown is one of the best things about the later theme.
Came here specifically to see and hear The Countdown and Theme.
The second theme always gets me going. Wow!!! The best
How could it not? Both themes were written by John Williams who went on to compose the original scores for well over 200 movies including Jaws, Star Wars, Superman: The Movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park and Harry Potter to name a few.
@@claytonraphael8629 You are correct, I don't give a shit.
Specially when the unexpected countdown begins. Wow!
Agreed. A terrific theme song for a horrid tv show. They could have gotten better ratings by just playing the theme song for the entire 60 minutes.
@@tomshelton1447 Sadly, I think Lost in Space was yet another victim of the dreaded "Batman Effect". Season 1 was excellent.
The idea of an entire family of astronauts was fantastic good fun! I miss those shows. Innocent and entertaining. Good stories. Now even cartoons are dark and scary.
seriously huh
@@Fortwentt should turn off Adult Swim lol
The first theme is my favorite. I sometimes stay up late Saturday just to hear the theme music before going to bed. It was one of my favorite shows as a child. I'm so glad there are reruns in syndication.
You're not the only one who did it, so did I!!!
Pure classic tv show. Brings back happy memories of my childhood!
I loved this as 9 year old kid in ex- Yugoslavia, every Saturday evening was a holiday for me ...I remember saying to friends - Guys, tonight Lost in Space.
In Yugoslavia this TV show was not shown completely and was interrupted after first season. I was very sad.
Today everything looks naive and funny but anyways, it brings up memories from my childhood ... and nostalgia.
This TV show cause me to love Science Fiction with passion. Till today.
I loved watching it after school.
We will never see NEW TV series to even come close to the enjoyment one receives from these 60's shows.
American Television's Prime Time is long past!
Did you all know that they sell Judy and Penny Robinson dolls from the 1960's series on Ebay and also at these websites www.fabgearusa.com/ and bigbadtoystore.com and www.culttvmanshop.com/ these are 12 inch figures made from Executive Replicas and they are in their 3rd season outfits...they look just like Judy and Penny
@loretta hawley the remake sucks..you can never replace the original actors
I will say that new entries are always very negative in the attitudes of characters. Very violent, argumentative, unpleasant!
would be a minefield today making a programme like the original what with the woke movement insisting on cultural diversity and other lefty garbage. Best to leave well alone and remember the originals, as for the remake, completely butchered the role of Dr. Smith.
Original Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Star Trek, Lost in Space... all revived, yet most of which often pale in comparison to the original counterparts.
I have memories of my two younger brothers watching Lost In Space 🚀 & Star Trek
That countdown from 7 theme is one of the best intros to any show ever on tv. Still. I remember seeing that for the first time as a kid and it seemed great then as well.
I went crazy when I saw Billy Mumy and Angela Cartwright make cameo appearances in the new Lost in Space series on Netflix. I recognized them right off!
Watching this now. Where do they appear?
Guy Williams was such a strong father figure in this show. Ironic that he died young yet the good Doctor lived so much longer, even with his bad back 😂
“Oh the pain, the pain”
@@ltyler01 lol
lost in space was one of my favorite tv shows. and I still watch it
Yes,the second theme is absolutely electrifying.
We were so lucky as kids in the 70s. Reruns of many programs like this from the previous decade.
We were glued to the TV after school got out. In our TV sets you could go to Gilligan's Island, Lost in Space, Johnny Quest, Pettycoat Junction, Brady Bunch, Space 1999, Lassie, Partridge Family, Star Trek, Hogans Heroes, Leave it to Beaver.....on and on.
We always anticipated a hidden unknown new episode but really filming for these shows had ended before we were born.
I hated the reruns in the 70’s, over edited for commercials, chopped off next weeks teaser, shown out of order. Stupid tv stations.
Warning! Warning! Will Robinson, Great stuff.
So were we in the 90's. I watched all the 60's star trek , plus shows from the 70's which were then, old to me. It is a different world now. We were on the beginning of the computer age and digital and internet and wow..... I bet the technological world doesn't change as much in the next 100 years as it has in the past 20-25 years. Not sure what more they can do with our level of tech... unless there is a major breakthough.. they way jet power was compared to propeller. One thing is for sure... conventional travel though space will not get us anywhere. Crazy how far some of the distances are. But... can you imagne knowing that the universe is finite. Despite all that space.. one would always wonder what was on the other side of the edge. Will someone read this comment in 10,000 years and say... what... they thought the universe was infinite... that's like saying the earth was flat. Silly people!
I remember all of those shows (except Leave It To Beaver and Lassie) when they were new. Space 1999, I think, was actually produced in the 1970s, as was The Partridge Family.
You were "lucky" to be glued to the TV? No wonder baby boomers are all morbidly obese. In the 90s as kids we actually ran around outside, played outside, played sports, rode our bicycles, etc. TV was there too but we rarely seemed to watch it. Except on a rainy day. Though even then, rain is just rain, it's only a bit of water. Put on a coat and you can still run around in the rain and play football (i.e. FOOTBALL football, not American football (handegg), FOOTBALL football football).
So Nostalgic of the 1960s & 1970s! Thank You So Much for the Fond Memories! 🗿♥️🌷🕯
Season 3 had such a great opening sequence. That countdown had me locked onto the screen as a kid lol
Simply Awesome! As soon as i heard the theme music , something magical happened. I went back in time to the 1960s my childhood. A time of innocent. I saw myself Sitting in front of my parents old blk & white TV watching Lost N Space. I felt it. It filled good. Thks.
We were so lucky as kids to have these great TV series on the box, back in the 60's. Been there got the T shirt on that one, loved ' Lost In Space '. From what I remember, it started at 5pm, and when it finished it was my tea time. Happy times for sure! Don't you just love that countdown 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 what a blast!!
I didn't even know that Lost in Space was premiering that Wednesday night, Sept 15, 1965. Our antenna only received 3 channels, and luckily CBS was one of them, and that's what my family was watching when Lost in Space came on, and my brother and I were hooked.
This brings me back. Dam I’m getting old
The music of this TV Series was AMAZING! Very creative time!
Growing up in the suburbs of Detroit in the 70s Lost in Space aired every summer up to Labor Day so by the time Season 3 hit there was always the reminder school and summer break was about to end. It never failed as we always went upnorth Labor Day weekend so I'd miss some of the last few episodes until the next summer.
I absolutely love the second version of the opening sequence. I love the groovy 60s beach vibe when the younger robinsons are shown
I wait all week to watch these classic shows on now till 4 am. Starting with lost in space on metv
As a young kid of 4 years i was TOTALLY GLUED to the TV back then in 1964 to this and the THUNDERBIRDS...so much so that mum had to get me prescribed glasses to correct my vision..Great times etched in history but never ever to be forgotten.
I grew up in the sixties and the ominous sound of those big tubas in the original theme is still my favorite. Of course, the 2nd theme is more whimsical and the countdown gives it that extra umph but I still prefer season 1 theme. If you never caught the genius of John Williams live and you like his great movie themes, please do yourself a favor and go see it live.
The first theme lives rent free in my head mostly because those were the reruns I most often saw
This was an unmissable series I watched every week, I really enjoyed my childhood here in Bahia and Brazil.
It was more than the great acting, the stories, writers, everything that made these shows great, i have 100's series on dvd, love them.
Thank you for posting this... the memories it brings back ...
I looked forward to coming home from elementary school and watching Lost In Space , it was always one of my favorite shows
This had to be the best SciFi tv series ever made in the days no other s came close not even Star Trek..
Ah that theme carries a spirit of my childhood. The dreamer that I long for.
I use to watch these episodes with my late bro who was born in 66’. Great memories 🥰🥰
Awesome show. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. 👍
I went to the Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway Park on 9/9/19 and I almost fell out of my seat when none other than Mark Goddard, Dr. Don West himself, threw out one of the ceremonial first pitches. To top it off, as he left the field they played the second version of the "Lost In Space" theme, which is my favorite!
Mark Goddard is originally from Lowell MA
@@michaelpohas2608 I'd love it when I could hear Major West's Boston accent. Example In The Reluctant Stowaway: "What have you done to the transmittah?"
Watched Lost In Space in Manila, Philippines at age 17. Second season theme music has to be described as "Absolutely Exhilarating!" Still watching re-runs now at 71...
I love how they had "and Angela Cartwright as Penny". That kind of credit used for stars. And she was.
I was surprised she never went on to do much! I always kind of had a crush on her when I was young watching this show. I am an old geezer in my sixties now. The blond sister was probably more popular with the guys, but I liked Penny. Fun show.
I'm a Baby boomer grew up with this when it was brand new! I and I still love it!!
I was born in 67, as a kid living in Australia, i raced home from school and watched this on my parents tiny black and white TV.
Oh and for me it's the first theme, I love the dots assembling so cool. And who could forget the astronauts all tethered together as they floated across the screen.
Such a fabulous music introduction.A fabulous tv Program.
After all these years, I still can't decide which theme song I like better.
Who am I kidding?
I LOVE THEM BOTH EQUALLY!
Boy, they sure don't make shows like Lost In Space anymore!
they did
One of my favorite TV shows
The 2nd version theme was the one that stuck in my memory and still find my Self whistling it now and again 👍
Same
Oh yeah! especially now that they came out with a new series on Netflix, Which I actually like, a lot of twists. But that music!!
@@skylark4901 Even though they idiotically skip the opening like two out of every three episodes. I mean... *why?!* What's the point?

one of the best TV intro's of all time. Right up there with Hawaii Five-O and The Rockford Files, in IMO
Hawaii 5 O - GREAT Theme song!!
@@kathyflorcruz552 Love how they made Mcgarrett look so cool in the theme on the original Hawaii five O. When he turns around on that tall building. My 21 yr. old daughter thinks its "cheesy!" Lol. I think its cool. That show had so much more class than the new one. The cool cars, the suits, the professionalism. Now people look sloppy and unprofessional. The dude that plays Mcgarrett now doesn't even look like he shaves about half the time. I don't even watch the new one. But I've seen it. Of course that's who my daughter likes. To me their is only ONE Mcgarrett and that's Jack Lord! SMH.
Wonderful childhood memories.
A little piece of my childhood's happy place!
These theme songs are superb especially the third season WoW !!!!!
The final LIS theme was by far the best, in my humble opinion. Of all of Irwin Allen's TV science television series LIS, Time Tunnel and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea were my absolute favourites. I did not care for Land Of The Giants. Those give me great childhood memories. 😊👍
I much preferred the first theme-- and still do. I also preferred the intro with the cast as cartoon characters stretched out on an air line in space. I never got into the second intro.
Watching reruns in the 1970s, my friends and I always liked season 3 music and episodes the best.
Very, very nice compilation, from one of my very favorite shows... and remastered. Thank you!
Always loved the animosity between Don and Dr Smith
As a kid, I thought it was so cool that I have an ancestor named John Robinson.
SIMPLY WONDERFUL.....Wonderful Loving MEMORIES.....THE VERY BEST !!!!
Season 3 always had the best theme and opening credits!
Most of them are clips from “Visit to a Hostile Planet”
1:48 "Theme: Johnny Williams"
I have the feeling this "Johnny Williams" fella is gonna make it big in the composing business . . . .
His story is an example of how you work your up in Hollywood. In the mid-1950s, Williams got his first job as a pianist in the Columbia studio orchestra, under the baton of Morris Stoloff. He started by just playing little piano riffs for a movie like "Picnic." After a while, according to Williams, Stoloff liked his work and asked him to write a few bars of music and sent him over to Alfred Newman at 20th Century-Fox where he worked on musicals like "Carousel" and "The King and I." A decade later, he got this gig at Fox for "Lost in Space." In 1971, he won his first Oscar for the adaptation of "Fiddler on the Roof." After that, "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Indiana Jones," "E.T." and so on. Along the way, he broke Newman's record for most Oscar nominstions with an unsurpassed resume of musical styles.
We will watch his career with great interest
Pffft... Fat chance LOL
He is best known for his work on Penelope.
I dunno . . .these riffs are kinda catchy, but a lot of these guys are just flash-in-the-pan, with no real lasting power. And it's not like there's any future in these sci-fi things, anyhow.
'Marta Kristen', strikingly beautiful !!!
I always loved their uniforms, especially the last season.
I loved the original - to a musician, it's really interesting, with lots of chromatic passing tones. The opening reminds me of Stravinski's Rite of Spring! In the 2nd version we're back to the usual diatonic scale.
Both themes have their charms. I agree totally, the first is modern classical and very complex. The second is more visceral with a "go-go" beat.
A segunda versão me trás lágrimas, lembro de toda a família reunida para assistir aos episódios.Essa melodia é especial .
Both opening theme songs were great!
I loved this show....always liked the times the Jupiter took off.....I liked the background nuclear sounds the engine of the space ship made....good times in the 60's ! Time Tunnel was also a favorite of mine....loved the opening theme...
Lost in Space was FUN and really stimulated our imaginations as children! Interestingly, I only remember the original theme. Yes, the second theme is definitely more upbeat; however, the urgent, staccato, somewhat frenetic vibe of the original, in my view, truly captures the drama of what the Swiss Family Robinson actually goes through ("Warning - warning - Danger Will Robinson!). Perhaps the most distinctive character was the one who was too clever for his own good and always royally screwing things up! (Most have you know who I mean, yes?)
Marta Kristen was absolutely gorgeous
4:21 The robot dressed in farmer's clothes made me LMAO!
That was amazing! XD
He was in disguise as a scarecrow!
I always thought the antagonistic relationship between Dr. Smith and the Robot was the axis of the series. The insults Smith tossed at the Robot (often quoting Shakespeare) were priceless as were Robots retorts.
"Visit to a Hostile Planet" Hands down, the best!
These were far and Away The BEST Theme Songs of it's Day, even the short scores During the show were Hits to
me and helped tell what was going on during the episode.
It actually helped me with my decision

I Still watch it Faithfully Every Saturday Night.
The second theme was always my favorite. If they ever do a proper remake hope they use that theme. Its fantastic
Wish granted. Netflix series. 👨🚀👩🚀
❤👍
I have always liked them both, but the second theme has proven to be the one most folks remember. The Nefflix series has used it, but also the 1998 movie used a jazzed-up version of it for the closing credits, as well.
Mine two!!!
They did on netflix
Loved playing this in high school marching band! It was so heavy on the low end brass
I bet. I played the baritone horn. I'm sure playing the french horn and trumpet part was wild too!
Season 3. Best. I remember as a kid in the 80s watching in the summer months. Also remember when I was sick watching it during the day in reruns.
Really enjoy watching this show. Love the music. We need shows like this.🌻🌻
THE SECOND OPENING AND CLOSING THEMES WERE THE BEST ! LOST IN SPACE .
I grew up on John Williams....Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, ET, Star Wars, The Poseidon Adventure, Land of the Giants, Schindler's List, Close Encounter of the Third Kind, Jaws, Indiana Jones...the soundtrack of my life!
I was mad, of course, when the song changed, but now I find the 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 countdown to the beat of the song compelling.
One of my childhood favorites !
Lost in Space, Star Trek , The Munsters, The Addams Family, The Beverly Hillbillies, Gilligan´s Island were my absolute favorites, then Lassie, The adventures of Rin-Tin-Tin, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants, Bonanza, The Great Chaparral and finally my least favorites were Custer and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Since I was born in '68 I saw them dubbed into Spanish during the first half of the 70s in reruns. Great memories! Greetings from Mexico.
I'm here because my parents asked me to look up their old fave show theme songs for them 🖤
The episode where they go to earth in 1947 is my favorite
A Hostel Planet and one of the view times they actually use the real ship. Great episode..
