lifelong Saints fan here. i agree with Connor we have been wanting a rebuild every year and then by the time the season starts we get caught up in the delusional that it’ll be different this time and then around this time of the year we’re back to clamoring for a rebuild. i am from OKC and also a Thunder fan. they did it right. we need someone like Sam Presti because that’s how you rebuild in a way that’s near impossible to fail.
One GM candidate I have is Milt Hendrickson, who is the Packers Director of Football Operations. The main issue the Saints have had is moving on from the Brees area, and the Packers have done a great job transitioning from the Rodgers Era to the Love Era. Additionally, before joining Green Bay, Milt was with the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl in 2012
Seems like a worthy candidate. Hopefully they move Micky Loomis to President of operations and bring in a new GM to run the team. Then I'd feel very confident about the future of this franchise.
No. He’s the second string executor if Leuschke and whoever else die before Gayle does. Monkey not in the will as a beneficiary, at least of the team. He can be moved
There is at least one historical precedent for the Carr salary dump compensation. Brock Osweiler was traded from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns in 2017. The Browns got Osweiler, a 2018 2nd, and a 2017 6th, while the Texans got a 2017 4th. This happened one year into Brock's 4 year, $72 million ($37 million guaranteed) contract, and freed up $10 million (5.99%) out of the $167 million cap for the Texans that year.
I’m actually impressed that you guys whiffed on the Aaron Glenn piece. Guys. He was a Saints guy for years. He worked with DC and BJ in New Orleans. His entire thing in Detroit has been building this defense from the ground up in his vision of man coverage with a 4 man rush with exotic blitzes mixed in. There’s absolutely no reason that anyone gives DC the credit for the defense. DC is an offensive guy, played TE, and called plays for the Lions when they turned things around after the firing of Anthony Lynn. His best friend is Duce Staley, former assistant head coach and RB coach who was the run game coordinator. That’s his choice for OC. He could pull Randle El with him, or more likely, Hank Fraley if Duce isn’t ready to come back to coaching.
@@connorjrogers I know you talked about him, but you guys whiffed on the points in the conversation. That’s why I referenced exact things you guys said in my comment.
You guys did an excellent job fixing the Saints. There is a chance the Saints would restructure Carr's contract, which is par for the coarse around here. 😞 These "restructures" guarantee massive cap hits in future years, when the players are either too old or downright gone. Pro-rating a converted signing bonus usually means adding extra years to the existing contract to reach that 5-year max. So, you end up with dead money (Michael Thomas) or wasted money (Cam Jordan makes $20M against the cap this year, but he only plays 20 plays a game due to age and ineffectiveness). ❤
Def think there is a world where they have to/want to restructure Carr instead of salary dump trade him (might not have a partner), but ideally I’d like to get him off the books and just see what Rattler’s got next year
I know y’all said that qbs wouldn’t be there but I could definitely see the saints passing up on cam ward and shedeur sanders for whoever that guy is y’all took. Very realistic and accurate draft tendencies, I can’t even be mad. I swear it’s like the saints see good players fall to them and say “ this guy shouldn’t be here, he’s much better than this” then proceed to draft somebody else. Great work guys.
I think having Rattler there gives them the flexibility to really attack the talent in this draft. More I think about it the more I do like that trade down
@ Expecting Rattler to work out seems a bit too optimistic. I’d much rather do the trade down acquire as much talent as I can and take a flier on Justin Fields, Malik Willis, or Mac Jones, Josh Dobbs, in free agency. Drafting rattler was a mistake. He fell to us and we took the bait out of desperation but he is not the answer. Not for this team.
@@VanderBroski he was never good. He’s not a elite prospect. Drafting him to be our future qb never made sense. Letting him be the replacement for Derrick Carr is aiming for mediocrity.
@GKwrestling4life it's funny how clueless other fanbases are when it comes to the Saints. I agree with you that we were good for 20 years and now people (like the commentor) are acting like we've sucked for 20 years
Trevor mentioned that trading Carr might be hard and his high salary could take a substantial commitment from a trade partner. I was curious as to why that was, so I did some research, and I’ll break down what I learned down below. First off, Carr has a no trade clause, so not only does a team have to want Carr this offseason, but Carr also has to want them. That’s a hurdle. Carr will be expensive for a trade partner for 2 major reasons. One, he has a $10M guaranteed roster bonus for 2025 that’s already kicked in. He gets that money no matter what. Secondly, his $30M base salary becomes fully guaranteed on the 3rd day of the 2025 league year (March 15th). Carr’s dead cap hit is too large for the Saints to cut him before the salary guarantee kicks in, and Carr has a no trade clause, so he sure as heck ain’t agreeing to a trade till that money guarantees. So as his contract currently stands, whoever trades for Carr will be on the hook for a 1 year/$40M deal. The Saints have to be cap compliant by the start of the new league year, but Carr isn’t going to want to go anywhere till he gets his $30M guaranteed on the 3rd day of the league year. The Saints can’t afford to let Carr’s $50M+ cap hit sit on the books, so there will have to be a resolution to the Carr problem before the new league year. I see 2 paths to a solution. One, the Saints allow Carr to reach out to teams and seek a trade. If Carr and his camp can find a trade partner, then Carr and the Saints will agree to rework Carr’s contract to make it movable before the new league year, making sure that Carr still gets at least $40M guaranteed over the life of the new deal. Two, the Saints restructure Carr’s contract, save $24M against the cap, and view him as a bridge QB who they’ll cut in 2026. Personally, I view the latter as more realistic.
Happy birthday Connor!! Beer flights at a restaurant is truly an excellent surprise. Also stop talking about Jesse Minter as a HC candidate we need to keep him in LA😭😭

When y'all brought up the "bad luck" and injuries. You bring up the skill positions, which are important. But what was most crippling was losing center Erik McCoy on the first drive of week 3. Then the domino effect of injuries on the offensive line. By week 5 we had guys on the offensive line that were going to retire if a team didn't call. We could NOT run the ball whatsoever without McCoy, which is what the offense is predicated on. So, while yes it is bad luck, it is also the nature of the game for injuries to happen. Maybe the injury bug isn't as severe, but the roster was still paper thin because of all the top heavy contracts. In the Saints championship window, injuries would happen all the time, but it didn't matter. There was plenty of depth, truly a next man up situation. Now due to poor drafting the saints are in a horrible place. If they had drafted well this wouldn't be a problem, even with the salary cap. Now you have way less talent on the whole 53, AND you're strapped by the salary cap. Yeah... Hate to say it but the injuries had to happen. The starting 22 was very solid but it was nothing more but a smoke screen. The rebuild begins.
Vrabel has to be the hire. He has always been able to maximize his talents and do more with less. With the current cap situation he will not have as much talent on the field as he would like, but confident he can take a below average, aging roster and could go 9-8 next year and get this back to the playoffs in 2-3 years. He will just need a good OC with him, maybe Arthur Smith.
I'd love to know from the two of you, are there any College Head Coaches that you can see moving up to the NFL next season as either a HC or a Coordinator? Would love to know how the NFL feels about Jedd Fisch with his Belichick and McVey connections. Also Ryan Day as OC for Vrabel when Ryan Day eventually gets pushed out?
I'm not that far in yet, you said this sucks for Saints fans right now, and I assume it does for some, but for me...we finally fired DA and traded Lattimore which feels like a splash of honesty, and I'm primarily just relieved that it seems we're finally admitting it and blowing it up where most fans knew anyway that we needed to do it. NFL is always a cycle to some extent, even the Patriots, the greatest dynasty in the sport, weren't great forever, and no team ever will be. Might as well make peace with that fact, so I'm okay.
If Loomis is still GM (which is to be expected) I would make Aaron Glenn the odds on favorite as next Saints Head Coach. Loomis is familiar with him from his previous stint and I think AG has learned some good perspective from working in Detroit and completely rebuilding a franchise. AG will be a HC next season if he wants it. He's a great defensive mind, but he has great leadership qualities across the board.
As a Chargers fan with our upcoming cap space, I wouldn't mind having Carr as a backup (which we have wanted a legit backup for a while) if we got picks with him. We could even switch Pipkens and Penning with Pip playing tackle and Pen switching to guard.
As a fellow chargers fan, this would be a big waste in resources for sure. I also doubt Carr would want to be a backup anywhere at this moment in time. We can definitely pickup a solid backup that costs half or less than what Carr would cost, Carr cap hit next season is 61m
@rodders03 i did say that I "wouldn't mind" and not that I what it but if we're honest it would be more about giving Hortiz more amo for the draft to move up or down or even just stick and pick more guys up. Carr wouldn't have much of a choice in this matter, and we might even be able to flip him at the trade deadline next season to a desperate team. If we're looking at FA, I'm more interested in getting a guard and center (possibly picking up & moving Zach Martin to C given his experience and age) than trying to get a bunch of players which would leave us more room for this type of move and future moves. Not saying I want this, but I can see it working out. I currently trust Hortiz to make the right choice.
Going from Connors birthday to the pope's tweets is why I love this podcast can't get this anywhere else
