You pretty much nailed it when you called it a "hard, hard pop song". I saw Skyhooks perform live twice, and this song was much heavier live and it had the crowd absolutely heaving. Great memories, Anzac Day 1983 at Festival Hall in Melbourne.
Omg why do American think that Graham (Shirl) is a woman. I just don’t hear it at.. he has one of the most powerful voices of our rock singers that gets of over looked at lot.. RIP Shirl..
I think compared to Robert Plant, Steve Marriott, Dio, other male singers who sing in a high register, I think Shirl wasn’t afraid to sound androgynous at times, which is a huge part of his appeal I think.
That voice... Bruce Dickson, Vince Neil..Rob Halford.. We had Skyhooks. 🇦🇺 Rest well Graeme Strachan.. You did so very well 👏 👏 ( He was a pilot also... )
Great reaction to a great song .Next song from Skyhooks you could try is “Million dollar riff “ you will enjoy that as well keep up the great reviews cheers .😊
Hi @alisonholland7531 ... Young kids have their own language which is always interesting. My daughter called an umbrella an "umberbota". Someone needs to make a dictionary of kids under 4 words and what they mean. Thanks for the smile and keep rockin' ...
iron Maiden did it, but not as well as the original.I have loved Skyhooks since I was 14, when Living in the 70’s came out. Still have the vinyl, it is the music of my teenage years In Australia!! R.I.P. Shirl, you are still a legend here ❤️
Honestly Graeme “Shirley” Strachan has one of the best voices out there. His high range and crystal clear and powerful vocals are amazing. Credit to the rest of the band too. their back up vocals aren’t bad either. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Right on Todd. Awesome reaction. I recall Skyhooks being played on the radio & on my cassette deck whilst driving to work in my Holden Sandman (panel) van with a built in sound system like a giant set of headphones. What a blast that was. Suggest you also check out Mondo Rock & Daddy Cool for some more really cool 70's Aussie bands. Then there's the 80's which Australia owned outright... an era of sensational Aussie bands and great music. Enjoyed. Cheers from Sydney, AU.
Horror Movie was another song that had a lot of meaning as well as being a great song. Megalomania was another very good one carrying a strong message. I loved Skyhooks - and still do. I had pretty much every album and single.
This a vocal performance of the highest order...pretty sure recorded in one take...the vocals by Shirl towards the end should be blow your mind....if you listen carefully.
G,day from Australia I guess with a nickname like Shirley people might think Skyhooks was fronted by a girl singer . I can't think of any Australian band that didn't have fun during their time in the spotlight , with very few exceptions Australian bands paid their dues playing in pubs and clubs to packed audiences who were loud and intoxicated, so they had to be loud and energetic just to survive, ACDC, MIDNIGHT OIL, COLD CHISEL, ANGELS, HUNTERS AND COLLECTORS, and a plethora of other Aussie bands all got their start this way ,and you had to be good to survive. Australia has always punched above our weight when it comes to music, check us out you won't be disappointed .
Music I grew up with here in Australia, Skyhooks had so many good ones.. especially Horror Movie, Jukebox In Siberia, Living in the 70s...just one of our great bands from the 70s 😊. Enjoyed your reaction
Skyhooks were so good, I grew up with them here in Australia, they had many good songs, check out more of their stuff, I've shown their music to young people most seem to still like it, it seems to be a bit timeless. The lead singer had the nickname Shirley, I believe due to his curly hair (named after Shirley Temple I imagine) , that's the only reason, he isn't Trans or anything like that. Shirl went on to be a children's TV host and done many things.
You have opened up an amazing wonderful vault listening to Skyhooks. Take your time listening to the second album called Ego Is Not A Dirty Word. Greg's lyrics are up there with music's cleverest songwriters. They were a bunch of larrikins, but amazing musicians. Sadly lead singer passed away learning to be a helicopter pilot, far too early.
Skyhooks had some great songs, Blue Jeans , Million Dollar Riff, Party to end all parties, All my friends are getting married, ….. this song was also covered by Iron Maiden.
Check out Million dollar riff even better then Women in Uniform...and Horror Movie and Ego is not a dirty word are very representative of their style. The leader singer was Known as Shirley due to his curly hair. They did tour the USA and had some localized success.
Greg Macainsh wrote most of the songs, Red wrote and sung Smut, (a song about a guy going to the cinema and masterbating!!). I think by the time this song was recorded, Red had left the band, and Bob Spencer replaced him. (Bob would later join The Angels, probably my favourite Australian rock band. But getting back to this song, it was covered by Irom Maiden, but i think Skyhooks did it better.
G'day, I think there is only one Skyhooks song that should follow this. "Girls just like me 'cos I'm good in bed".Some of their songs got plenty of air time on radio, others got banned. Once you have got through the Skyhooks play list have a listen to "Redgum" (Named after a type of Eucaliptus tree).
I am the opposite and do what you would like to do, when I hear songs, I hear everything as a whole, I don't hear all the different parts to it. I also don't hear it with my ears. As with the name of the Album, Living in the 70s that had so many hits off of that album, look at the album list and can guarantee you that a lot were hits.
You pretty much nailed it when you called it a "hard, hard pop song". I saw Skyhooks perform live twice, and this song was much heavier live and it had the crowd absolutely heaving. Great memories, Anzac Day 1983 at Festival Hall in Melbourne.
Brilliant band 👏 So many hits
Great reaction, mate. This is one of my favourite Skyhooks songs. RIP Shirley ❤
Omg why do American think that Graham (Shirl) is a woman. I just don’t hear it at.. he has one of the most powerful voices of our rock singers that gets of over looked at lot.. RIP Shirl..
Because Americans overall are simple. No disrespect , but pretty basic.
I think compared to Robert Plant, Steve Marriott, Dio, other male singers who sing in a high register, I think Shirl wasn’t afraid to sound androgynous at times, which is a huge part of his appeal I think.
Skyhooks one my favourites, such fun songs !
More Australian artists please .. Cold Chisel with Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham
That voice... Bruce Dickson, Vince Neil..Rob Halford..
We had Skyhooks. 🇦🇺
Rest well Graeme Strachan.. You did so very well 👏 👏
( He was a pilot also... )
These guys were one of my favourites. I also loved Ego (is not a dirty word)...
Great reaction to a great song .Next song from Skyhooks you could try is “Million dollar riff “ you will enjoy that as well keep up the great reviews cheers .😊
When my youngest son was only three he sang "winnie and unicorn" 😂
Hi @alisonholland7531 ... Young kids have their own language which is always interesting. My daughter called an umbrella an "umberbota". Someone needs to make a dictionary of kids under 4 words and what they mean. Thanks for the smile and keep rockin' ...
Welcome to my childhood music mate. Glad ya like Skyhooks
Great Reaction, love Skyhooks,it did so well in England, Iron Maiden did a cover of it!
iron Maiden did it, but not as well as the original.I have loved Skyhooks since I was 14, when Living in the 70’s came out. Still have the vinyl, it is the music of my teenage years In Australia!! R.I.P. Shirl, you are still a legend here ❤️
Never bothered with the Iron Maiden version 😂 Nothing could compare to Shirl's vocals ❤
Iron Maiden hated the song.
Honestly Graeme “Shirley” Strachan has one of the best voices out there. His high range and crystal clear and powerful vocals are amazing. Credit to the rest of the band too. their back up vocals aren’t bad either. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Great band back in the late 70s early 80s saw them live too in Melbourne..
Living in the 70s is another good one of thiers
Saw Sky Hooks perform women in uniform live at the Bondi life Saver around 77 78 a memory so F k n good 👍
The music from my teens. Great reaction.
The late, great Graeme "Shirl" Strachan.

Shirls nickname came about because he had golden locks like Shirley Temple & he had 4 sisters he was the only boy.
Music I grew up with here in Australia, Skyhooks had so many good ones.. especially Horror Movie, Jukebox In Siberia, Living in the 70s...just one of our great bands from the 70s 😊. Enjoyed your reaction
Skyhooks lyrics were also heavy with local australian references... which was relatively rare for the time. very clever lyrics too
Sensational reaction

Still can’t believe Shirl isn’t with us😢
Great tune! Excellent review! RIP Shirl
Go the Baggers! 2024 is our year!
Peak 70's Oz Rock right here
Skyhooks had some great songs, Blue Jeans , Million Dollar Riff, Party to end all parties, All my friends are getting married, ….. this song was also covered by Iron Maiden.
I sat in a hollies concert with Shirley in the seat in front me ,
The Saints, stranded or now your product saints were the first real punk band
Great review and new opening to your page
I think you should listen to All My Friends are Getting Married if you would like too
My favourite Skyhooks song. Given Shirl never had children his vocals in the song are almost heartbreaking, and honestly the best he ever sounded.
Check out Million dollar riff even better then Women in Uniform...and Horror Movie and Ego is not a dirty word are very representative of their style. The leader singer was Known as Shirley due to his curly hair. They did tour the USA and had some localized success.
If you want to hear Skyhooks rock, like really rock, try a deep cut - BBBB Boogie. Your life will never be the same
You like the bass... the bass player wrote it (as the majority of their material)
Greg Macainsh wrote all their hits
You should react to "Smut" it was banned from radio when it was released in the 70s.
My fav skyhooks song is million dollar riff
did you notice two things about the bass guitar?
Greg Macainsh wrote most of the songs, Red wrote and sung Smut, (a song about a guy going to the cinema and masterbating!!). I think by the time this song was recorded, Red had left the band, and Bob Spencer replaced him. (Bob would later join The Angels, probably my favourite Australian rock band.

I liked, All my friends are getting married. By Skyhooks
Not sure how you'd go reacting to their song SMUT though 😂 awesome reaction 👍
Hi @alisonholland7531 ... Another future Skyhooks reaction and thank you for your wonderful compliment. Rock on ...
If you think this is good, the hooks doing this live really shows the bands musical ability and Shirl's vocals are off the wall.
SKYHOOKS - Love's Not Good Enough
What a great song

Iron Maiden do a cover of this song, even tho I'm a Maiden fan, the Hooks is way better.
A proper rocker mate
Hi Speed ... Though I had never heard of this group before, I find them very enjoyable. Keep rockin' my friend ...
Grew up listening to skyhooks. Please check out party to end all parties
The bass guitarists wrote 90% of their songs
Uniform hook lyric!
Which of us is the fool by .Robert Palmer , music video version please
Yes, the lead singer was imitating a woman. Shirl (the lead singer, real name Graham) was great at voices.
Always preferred Bob Spencer over Red Symons.
If ya recon Shirl sounds like a female, get your ears checked mate. It’s like me saying John Wayne sounds Asian.
Better than Iron Maiden.
