Hi again, I've been having fun watching your channel and your reactions to all the australian songs from my childhood. i've been feeling rather dismal as it will soon be ten years since my mum died and watching you has been a nice diversion from that. you have done a lot of sherbert/darryl braithwate reactions so here is a skyhooks song. sherbert and skyhooks were the most popular bands of 70s australia my mum particularly like shirley strachan as he had curly hair and mum adored curly hair skyhooks were the fun guys whereas sherbet were a bit more serious so i hope you get a kick out of this belinda (from canberra)

Skyhooks were a uniquely 'Melbourne' band. Theatrical, mercurial and highly talented musicians, who had a strong sense of fun and an ability to outrage the parents whilst also endearing themselves to the Nation at the same time. Their first album 'Living in The Seventies' had six of it's 10 Tracks banned from Radio, so if you wanted to hear them you had to buy the Album; they were a Promoter's Dream. They were all incredible musicians, and Shirl was an outstanding Frontman. They could and did write and play in multiple Genres. They had Rock, Pop, Country and Blues songs, but brought their distinctive sound to every song they recorded. They split and re-formed many times, as Australia loved them. Almost two Decades after their Heyday, they released a single called 'Jukebox in Siberia' which rocked to Number One in Australia the week of Release. Check out anything by them, you won't regret it, they were a powerhouse.

I was born in the 70’s and love Skyhooks. Graeme Shirley Strachan (pronounced Straw-n) is a fantastic singer. Their clothes and make up was different to our other bands. The guitarist Red Symons was a Judge of his self named Red Faces segment on a show called Hey Hey it’s Saturday. There is a live 1988 sound check of this song on YT that’s pretty awesome.
    RIP Shirley 🕊

OMG!!!... I can't believe this was released 50 years ago in 1974! In '74 I was ending primary school and moving into high school in '75. That period of my life, and for many years on, felt like one long party! So long ago but regardless of our age, we carry within us all the ages we’ve ever been. As our youth gradually fades, our younger selves are still with us along for the ride.

Funny how you commented on the lead singer’s curls. His name was Graeme Strachan but was always known by his nickname Shirley (as in actress Shirley Temple…who had very curly hair). Shirl went on to host a renovation show on TV for many years(think he was a carpenter by trade). He was very much loved by the Australian public as he was a funny and genuine guy. Sadly he died about 20 years ago in a helicopter crash (he was the pilot).

Skyhooks were one of Australia's top bands of the 70's and the first Australian band to sign contract for $1m for releases in the USA. They had a cult type following in the US and despite not being well known over there they had a huge following! Whilst commercially popular this for me is not one of their better tracks. Hope you explore some more.

Skyhooks always wore those great outlandish costumes. Halloween wasn't a thing in Australia in the '70s (or '80s, '90s etc), we only started getting into it in the last ten years or so (influenced by American television).

  • @iankearns774

The Hooks were a very different band, they pushed the boundaries of music at the time and had a lot of their songs banned from radio because at the time Australia was very conservative and they most certainly weren't.
They had quite a few good albums and many hits particularly in their home town of Melbourne as they used local suburbs and streets in their songs such as Balwyn calling, eastern suburb of Melbourne, Lygon St Limbo which is a street in a suburb called Carlton, Toorak Cowboy, Toorak is another Melbourne suburb. Their songs are full of tongue in cheek jokes and innuendo, when this came out I was about 10 yo so I didn't appreciate a lot of their material until I got older. They are well worth a listen, Horror Movie, Million Dollar Riff, Ego, All my Friends are getting married are all good songs.

Shirley's real name was Graham and his surname is pronounced 'Strawn', not Stracken.
He was a Carpenter and really wanted to spend his life surfing and thus, singing in a band, rather than a daily gring job, suited him fine. He got the nickname of Shirley because of the curly hair being like Shirley Temple.
This wasn't a Halloween show...they were a glam rock band and looked like that all the time.
I think Shirl could just sing, I sort of recall he didn't have a singing coach, but am prepared to be corrected if anyone knows otherwise.

And this was a critical performance this was the first episode of countdown. A American equivalent would be American bandstand or solid gold. But countdown was critical to the Australian music industry. It exposed bands to the entire country that nobody had ever heard of. As a result Skyhooks became million sellers in Australia with record sales ! Before 1974 there was no national top 10 of what was the most popular song in Australia. It was only by city’s so Skyhooks could be big in Melbourne but number 10 in Brisbane! Thanks to countdown we could finally find out what was the number one song in the country! Lol. That’s why this performance by skyhooks of the opening of this new pop show was so important. Countdown had to succeed in order for the Australian music industry to get off the ground. No skyhooks and you don’t get midnight oil INXS or split enzs along with Silverchair !

    • @jspettifer
      @jspettifer 8 месяцев назад +3

The impact of Countdown on Australian music is hard to understate. A band who played on Countdown could see sales skyrocket the next day and many bands made it big due to Countdown.
Probably the biggest band to make it big from Countdown was Blondie when the host (Molly Meldrum) played the B-side of their single X-Offender called In the Flesh. It isn’t clear whether it was intentional but Jimmy Destri said “we still thank him to this day" for playing the wrong song.[

Have to correct you, cobber. This was not the first episode of Countdown, or even the first episode of Countdown in colour. Skyhooks did headline the first colour ep, but with Horror Movie.
Also, Skyhooks ‘You just like me ‘cos I’m good in bed’ was the first song ever played on Sydney’s 2JJ, which has become JJJ Australia-wide.
You had to be there. Great times.

Skyhooks was the first band I discovered and introduced to him. They were such a good band, telling Australian (Melbourne in particular) stories. Such clever, funny lyrics. The tv show Countdown was a weekly TV show for young people here in Australia when I was a kid in the 70's and it ran for years with Molly (Ian ) Meldrum as the host. Countdown gave up and coming bands exposure and created so many of the big stars from Australia back in the day, they should bring it back. I always loved Skyhooks a a kid and still listen to them today. In case you don't know a sky hook is a mythical thing that we as humans wish we had, we could hang things in the sky easily. Haha, we would play tricks on young apprentices at work and send them to the store to get a sky hook or tin of striped paint if we wanted some peace for a while or a laugh lol

Thanks for playing the favourite band of my adolescence. This is by far one their tamer songs. If you want to listen to some of their more outrageous stuff, give these songs a listen:
    - Smut (about masturbating into a bag of Twisties at the cinema)
    - You just like me ‘cos I’m good in bed (kinda self explanatory, banned from radio, and as a consequence the first song ever played on fledgeling rebellious youth music radio station 2JJ. Yes kids, there was a time when JJ/JJJ was rebellious.)
    - Motorcycle bitch
    - Toorak Cowboy (‘Well he bought his first dope outside the South Yarra Arms…’)
    Musically, their finest songs were:
    - Carlton
    - Love on the Radio
And Belinda had one thing a little fuzzy - in 1974 you were Skyhooks or you were Sherbet. *Never* both.

Shirley actially died crashing into the mountain on my family friends property, we had my fathers funeral on this property at the end of last year and the room my dads coffin was in during the service has part of the plane in which we thought was pretty rock n roll for my dad

They came to NZ. They played at Carlaw Park, also with Santana. The police were there to make sure that they didn’t do anything wrong. They had a big penis on stage. It was a fantastic show.

Thus was controversial stuff in the 70's. TV station were fielding complaints. These people were breaking creative and social boundaries.✌🏻

They used to do their own make up
No this is the how the band was
On good medicine 😉 i think
Also a lot of grate bands at the time in Ozzie
So bands in 70s where like them out landish costumes as well talent
Many big hits women in uniform was another
Unfortunately after retiring for many years
They where about to get back together to tour again
But the lead singer Shirley Strachan died flying his helicopter
Was originally another working class carpenter / chippy in Aussie slang
Like tradie is tradesmen and what he was before singer
    Cheers guys 🦘🇦🇺👍

Strachan sounds like strawn said like lawn. He was nick-named Shirl because his curls were like Shirley Temple's.

The Australian music scene was pretty stagnant, then Skyhooks turned it upside down with their killer debut album. Australians realised that a local act was just as good if not better than overseas bands.

There were plenty of talented local acts going around that played the pub scene for years with plenty of fans, Countdown gratefully gave them a new medium that exposed them even more and more album sales

Shirley's name is pronounced 'strawn' and spelt 'strachan'
The surfers that Shirley surfed with nick named him because of his curly hair similar to Shirley Temple's.
The Bass player Greg Macainsh wrote 99% of the Bands' songs.
Skyhooks were the first Australian artist to have a Gold album with "Living in the 70's"
They were very turbulent and exciting times.
Thanks to our 1st Labor government in 23 long, dark years, The mighty Whitlam government created a social & cultural environment that encouraged and nurtured Australian artists.
The mighty Whitlam Labor government funded the creation of Radio Station JJ 1540 am which played all 6 of the banned songs by Skyhooks and funded the LIVE TV music program called COUNTDOWN.
This music TV show launched the careers of some of the best and finest artists of the time.
The timing couldn't have been better.
The great government, the radio station, Countdown and the tsunami of artists.
Who could forget the episode of Countdown when Bon Scott wore 'pig tails' and a dress.
Bon probably did this due to the flamboyancy of Skyhooks which broke down the barriers.
The music magazines created a fake rivalry between Sherbet and Skyhooks in order to sell more magazines.
I liked both Bands, Sherbet made some of the best and biggest songs of the 70's.
Ted Mulry Gang made a huge impact for a few years in the mid-70's.
Hush did the same for a few years.
JPY and Jon English were massive male artists.
Both JPY and Mark Holden were pulled into the crowd on Countdown.
Supernaut came on the show and played "I Like it Both Ways"
Rose Tattoo got banned from Countdown because Angry Anderson gave an open mouthed kiss to Guitarist Mick Cocks.
Anyway, Skyhooks were a revolutionary music group that changed the music landscape in Australia.
    RIP - Shirley

The guy who wrote this Greg Macainsh was sick with hepatitis on the day this was taped November 1974. If you look closely at the guy in the white suit with the white hat. You will see that he is a she. It was Greg’s girlfriend who saved the day by taking his place ! Lol. It was a mimed performance to playback so she didn’t have to worry about playing the guitar!

It's hard to imagine how conservative Australia was in the early 70's, and how shocking the Skyhooks were.
The did take the piss with the outfits, but the music was dead serious, and reflected a younger changing Australia and the era they were from.
