Russell Morris is a dead set legend. This song was revolutionary for many reasons. Mainly its length. Radio stations didn't want to play it because it was too long. He had many hits in the 70's. "on the wings of an eagle".. "sweet sweet love" etc.... He was still performing recently and has a great series of blues albums over the last couple of decades.
This is a reinterpretation 20 years later! The clip you should watch is titled ‘RUSSELL MORRIS The Real Thing - Complete and in stereo’. It was visual ‘extravaganza’ (clearly disapproved of by the host) that may look dated now but it is consistent with the era, and more appropriate to the mood of the piece. Given the available technical effects they actually do a good job of matching the visuals with the over the top audio, which was such a shock at the time that radio stations would fade the track out when the choirs came in, so as to avoid that final outrageous and unacceptable sound of an atomic bomb!
My girlfriend and husband saw Russell Morris last week in concert called, Rock The House in Melbourne Australia with other older Aussie singers, John Paul Young, Ross Wilson, Glenn Shorrock, Brian Cadd, Russell Morris and Ella Hooper perform all of their old hits. My friends said all their voices were still amazing.
You guys watching all the horrors from the past shows everything you see now is not new. We've been doing bad shit to ourselves for a long time. Thanks to our Aussie legend, Russell.
The 1969 video is black & white and far less graphic. It commences with Brian Henderson, the host of "Bandstand" introducing Russell and the song. Brian went on to read the evening news to half the country (immaculately) for about 40 years. Russell released some beautiful songs and still performs live concerts.
Russell performed for my Sister-In-Laws birthday in their backyard about 16 years ago , he was just awesome and one of the few singers who performed live just as good if not better than his recordings , a really nice bloke too ....
One of the reviewers, I think the long haired one, mentioned Garage Rock briefly, and he's right, because between 1965 approx.- 1970ish, there was a massive underground Garage Scene in many major cities around the world. Glad to say that Russell Morris is going very strong these days. He is an excellent Guitarist and brilliant song writer. Australian fans, like myself, will be aware of the Super Groups he has played in as well. Russell has had a few very successful albums in the last 10-15 yrs and he's won awards. He is an Australian Treasure.
This is a modern video for the original song so there's additional sound bites not in the original The Aussie reporter speaking to camera in the red top is Jana Wendt and she was only on tv in the 80s
You're not getting The Real Thing... Gonna express some thoughts as an Aussie. This is a classic psychedelic rock song that even the most ardent of psychedelic rock fans and collectors of psychedelic rock tend to overlook or just completely miss. I begin to wonder why this song remains unknown outside Australia... Then I see that it's the 1990 weird-sh!tty remix/re-recording that gets the most views and pops up in the search results, and it's plain to see why most people ignore it. Some Australian music industry genius thought it'd a good idea to release a silly re-recording of a classic and unfortunately, that's the one that rises to the top of the search results, because somebody who DIDN'T have the original version decided to upload it before anybody else did. The original 1969 version is the one to look at. Not this crappy version... If this version was my introduction to The Real Thing, I would click it off and forget all about it. It's like being recommended Doobie Brothers' ''Long Train Running'' and then watching the video of the 1990's Dance-Remix version of said song. If you recommended somebody your favourite American beer and the barman decides to dilute it with water before that person even gets to taste the beer, you'd probably feel the same way I feel as I watch you two react to this shambolic recording of a classic song. It's not your fault. You're just not getting the real thing.
Hmm... I wish you guys listened to the original 1969 version, which was uploaded by nzoz1969 or Brett Reece. This was the washdown 1990 re-recording with a video that has a montage of Australian newsreaders of the day *cringe* It's irritating that RUclips push the crappiest version at the very top
I am annoyed that this version is the one that pops up as the first in the search results. I remember seeing this version premiered on TV and thinking it was complete trash. Sadly, it's trash that didn't disappear in time, but instead eclipses the original version.
I agree. The original clip from the 60s is far more powerful and disturbing and the weird vocal add ins do this masterpiece a disservice. And then the speeches over the top of that magical ending really killed that amazing ending.
A bit of trivia for you all....the ooom mah mah wow wow was just a filler when then first recorded because he didn't have a lyric for that bit but it stuck and has become an iconic part of the song
I liked the original better than this version. I was 7 when the original was played on the radio in 1969 Australia. Whenever I hear this song it reminds me of the time of the Apollo missions, man on the moon, Vietnam War, and the Cold War. A generally bad time psychologically for children to grow up in.
Yes it is hard to watch, but being reminded of what people have done to each other, helps us to realise what some are capable of doing, if they can minimalise the effects in the collective consciousness. We have to know about atrocities, to not let them fool us, that their ideas are not going to be so bad.
Russell Morris is a top musician. Hard to watch, you in the USA do not know how close Aussie was to Vietnam. I have cousins who were drawn into this. I still see him perform live in northernNSW. Brilliant
Not sure if this has been suggested or reacted to but a fun song from 1971 by the Aussie band Daddy Cool "Eagle Rock". There's a black and white film clip that goes with it.
pity the clips don't tell the whole story and we really didn't get it for Tian'anmen Square. the soldiers were reacting to what the students had done to them a few k's away from the square. Both sides fucked up badly.
Musically, the original is better. The imagery in this one is hard to watch it was the world as it was and a reminder. Do yrselves a favour and watch the old version as well
I had the original 45 growing up. You had to flip it over to hear Part II. The radio stations in the US never played the whole song back in the '60's. Also agree with everyone else, this version sucks. You can't even hear the music.
It is impossible for you to react to the song with this video collage comprised of images before and after that were not included with the song when it was released. Just impossible. You are reacting to the video.
I prefer the original, the one on Bandstand in 1969. They have messed with this one. Added too much 80's crap. It doesn't need all those stupid news clips.... And we don't need all the Hitler crap either. Find the original and try again...please.

I love russel

Russell Morris an Australian singer...He is a dead-set Aussie Legend mate!! I was a teenager back then, now nearly 70.
I go into a trance every time I hear this amazing song.
The original has been corrupted with later footage, this song is from 1969.
You guys watching all the horrors from the past shows everything you see now is not new.
We've been doing bad shit to ourselves for a long time.
Thanks to our Aussie legend, Russell.

The original performance is on youtube

Was that in Blackburn ?
One of the reviewers, I think the long haired one, mentioned Garage Rock briefly, and he's right, because between 1965 approx.- 1970ish, there was a massive underground Garage Scene in many major cities around the world.

There is also Part 3 Into Paper Walls, which picks up where this song finishes and finishes where this songs starts.
This is a modern video for the original song so there's additional sound bites not in the original
The Aussie reporter speaking to camera in the red top is Jana Wendt and she was only on tv in the 80s

Hear hear!
Well said. Do yourselves a favour, as the producer Molly Meldrum used to say, and go listen to the original.
Agree!
Yep, the original is great. This isn't.
I completely forgot this version even exists, it's so awful when compared to the original.
That’s just about the greatest song this country has ever made. It’s peak 60s. It ends the decade beautifully.
The original video with the remastered 1969 sound recording, with it's flanging effects is much better.
Hmm... I wish you guys listened to the original 1969 version, which was uploaded by nzoz1969 or Brett Reece. This was the washdown 1990 re-recording with a video that has a montage of Australian newsreaders of the day *cringe*

Hey, just new to your channel, love you reacting to Aussie music, try Skyhooks - Women in Uniform
Better off listening to the original clip.
Love this stuff, I was 8 years old when this came out.
I saw the original first
Agree, not overly impressed with this remake
Totally agree, this version drowns out the great drumming and piano.
I am annoyed that this version is the one that pops up as the first in the search results. I remember seeing this version premiered on TV and thinking it was complete trash. Sadly, it's trash that didn't disappear in time, but instead eclipses the original version.

The problem with this version is there is extra audio which wasn’t in the original track….
This was released in America, but only in about five cities. It went to number one in all five.
Original must watch
Molly Meldrum produced this song and did a great job even though the record company didn't like it but it was a huge hit.
A bit of trivia for you all....the ooom mah mah wow wow was just a filler when then first recorded because he didn't have a lyric for that bit but it stuck and has become an iconic part of the song
This clip made me weep.Nothing changes, humans will always hate.
I liked the original better than this version. I was 7 when the original was played on the radio in 1969 Australia. Whenever I hear this song it reminds me of the time of the Apollo missions, man on the moon, Vietnam War, and the Cold War. A generally bad time psychologically for children to grow up in.
Better to watch live versions of this song.
Our Molly
Well said mate

The song is waaay more powerful than the images, many weren't even relevant. Wasted.
Russell Morris is a top musician. Hard to watch, you in the USA do not know how close Aussie was to Vietnam.

Brilliant
Not sure if this has been suggested or reacted to but a fun song from 1971 by the Aussie band Daddy Cool "Eagle Rock". There's a black and white film clip that goes with it.
Check back catalogue...pretty sure they did it.
should listen to "morning of the Earth" surfing soundtack from the same era
hope was ever a chimera
Stone cold classic.
Russell the Love Muscle
You'd be surpised how small Murdoch really is .
I do not like this version. I recommend the original. I couldn’t watch this all the way through, had to stop. I feel it is corrupted.
People don't like seeing it because the don't like seeing the real thing. That's the whole point of the song.
pity the clips don't tell the whole story and we really didn't get it for Tian'anmen Square. the soldiers were reacting to what the students had done to them a few k's away from the square. Both sides fucked up badly.
That is one bad trip
S9ng makes for sense?
It's hard to watch, but it's the real thing, it happened.
not your fault, but this was the wrong clip to review. The original was gold. This was unadulterated crap and, quite simply, a parasitical effort.
I don't think this song was meant for a film clip like this
Watching this took me away from the song
Exactly..totally agree. this is a mess.
PS to my last comment, are you guys Canadian
Yes we are :)
As good as this is, I think the original version and video is better.
You had to mention Murdoch
Ummm
Forget the remix. Review the original video clip from 1969
You need to watch the original music video.
You definitely reacted to the wrong version of this. The original from 1969 is so much better.
I watched this through but it's extremely hard for me to see what's happened to the children throughout the world.
Prefer the 1969 record without any image.
it is1969
Musically, the original is better.
You can't even hear the music.
original clip was better.
good but watch the original
Up the volume on these ffs! 🤦♂️🙄🤷♂️

True, I've made the same comment, a year later, lol.
The un-official national anthem of Australia
Better than the Men At Work thing
Not this version...maybe the original 1969 version.
'Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again' has claims....by the Angels
The original video is better maybe not as graphic
older version much better
I hate this version what's with the coming over the top of the song ?????
