The Gun Devil’s appearance has to be one of the most iconic moments in the story of Chainsaw Man. Originally presented as the main villain to fight by Makima, only for it to serve as yet another piece of the puzzle for her plan to control Denji, the Gun Devil also serves another purpose: the real-time portrayal of the massacre, along with the list of the names of its victims reawakens something in the audience of a world that’s perhaps begun to grow desensitised from violence and death. As heartless as it can be to reduce a human life to just a number, I can understand the reasons behind it. Whether it be due to apathy, unfamiliarity with someone, or even to provide a coping mechanism, it makes sense. The Gun Devil could easily just be presented as that killing machine and have an impact. Still, the way the names are presented alongside the damage adds back a shred of humanity. A price is paid and lives are lost, but they were people too, with others who cared for them. No one is safe from the bigger picture, but we do our best to live all the same.
