This tune was released a couple months after I graduated from high school when I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do with my life. I started hearing it on the radio and was like “what was that?!?!” 37 years later and I’m still a professional drummer! Thanks Dave and Chick and the gang, you completely changed my life!
So very true - they didn’t do that when I saw them (in ‘86 with original group Corea, Patitucci - Weckl - Henderson) ... but I would have thought it was awesome if they had!
A mulleted Dave Weckl is not to be under estimated. Quantum leap in jazz fusion by the CCEB, no question about it. Timing, interplay, stellar musicianship, creativity I mean how can anyone not be blown away.
I bought the first Chick Corea Elektric Band release on cassette in the 10th grade, which would've been sometime in 1988. I kept seeing all of these ads in Modern Drummer with Dave Weckl in them. So I had to see what all the fuss was about. I've been a fan ever since. The original version of Rumble is just Corea, Pattitucci, and Weckl.
High-tech in all aspects of this group... Absolutely an amazing collection of tremendous talent.. Tremendously organized And orchestrated by Chick Corea.....
It is amazing to me how most of you guys lend this critique of this band, when MOST of you musically cannot even tie their shoes...EVEN BACK THEN! Show some respect..
Cheesy robotic on stage moves aside, this has got be one of the most hard hitting versions of Rumble i have ever heard from Chick Corea's Elektric Band and they're just absolutely on fire especially Dave Weckl 0:00 to 0:58 who brings so much power to the piece. Unbelievable performance.
..just so freaking awesome.... I miss CC already.. knowing I will never get to see the CCEB again or another version of RTF :(... Rumble is like an updated awesome and gorgeous modern opening theme jam for the CCEB just as The Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy was to RTF.... RIP Chick Corea.🎼💕💕🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yeah, I seen the robot act sometime around the very early 90's Back then it was more acceptable but today it looks very silly. That;s not why I listen to Chick and the guys for it's the AMAZING musicianship that's off the charts! A Corea fan since the early 1970's and musician since 74.
This was The Drum Set that I Liked Dave Weckl Playing. This Yamaha Recording Custom the Sound of this Kit was Amazing. Birch is a Great Recording Wood Component. Back Then I was Crazy about The Electric Band's Sound.
I robbed the hell out of the ending of this song for the end of one of my tunes on my senior arranging project in college. I wish mine was half this cool.
@@dsvelazquez I only have one recording of it from my senior recital, which was performed after only two rehearsals, and the lead trumpet player biffed the ending, so no, I don't have one I would like to share. LOL
Ha, this is great. It was always a better song live than it was on the album. Saw them play it a few times, but never on a large stage - which is apparently the only time they could get away with the cheesy robot stuff.
The robot act at the start is goofy as hell, but holy DANG the performance of this song will kick your ass and take your mom to bed. 10x better than the album recording at least. Weckl especially is just eating those drums for freaking breakfast.
Absolutely. I describe it as a great "musical" performance ( mind-blowing really) from the era of visual "Grande Fromage" ! - Ah the 80's... everything was a Pepsi commercial.
I like the way they take the craziness of the studio cut & make it that much crazier including Mr. Roboto movement. This album cleared out the dinner party guests faster than an ISIS invasion.
It used to have so much magic, all the electronics on the stage, Weckl and Patitucci keeping the groove as in a brand new Digital workstation. Those who did the real computing at that time will understand.
to anyone who would give a thumbs down...go listen to your Barney or Wiggles cd again... obviously you have no clue what REAL MUSIC actually is....!!!!!!
I can't believe any of you stopped to mention them doing that little robot dance at the beginning. Saying crap like "That's why people left the band", "C-3P0 having a stroke" (the 3P0 comment was funny, at least) but seriously how can you let that distract you or let it detract from the music? I would hardly have notice if there weren't so many whiners here. Embarrassed for them? I'm embarrassed for you. they had fun for like half a minute and then continued to have fun while focusing on playing.
+Zachary Pontzer Music is good but they look like a lot of twats nonetheless. Imagine if you can, weather report doing something that dumb. Zawinul, Jaco and Wayne making them dopey shapes? Don't think so.
I tried Zach, I really did. I doubt they would have done that had Chick not told them to. They are awkward. I don't get the point. I've seen the Elektric Band and never saw anything like that.
Getpickin....I don't know if you know this,but.... Corea did admit himself into a mental institution back in the early 70's before he started the "Return to Forever" band!!!!.....True fact!!!!!!!
Alternately cheesy and brilliant. Didn't much care for the jive-ass robot stuff early on, but after that it gets pretty impressive, everyones playing their asses off. Favorite things are Eric's tasty countermelody lines, Frank's cool close voiced chordal interjections, Weckl and Patitucci of course and Chick simply being himself.
I'm sure that even the guys playing this performance, if they saw the beginning antics,of this video, would cringe also. It's definitely something you do "in the moment" like, how cool would it be if we came on stage as robots.... fail on that, as you can see. But as soon as they have to play, you see how quickly that shit changes. Like faster than split second. And if you don't like the music. Chick was one of a few with enough clout to try a band of this level at this time (1986 I think).
nah, he got more self-conscious and hung up on technique, Gruber spoiled his natural vibe, compare Colaiuta and Weckl now, the former still manages to let himself go, taps into something primal in his playing when improvising, in comparison Weckl is overly controlled, back in the 80s he played more freely, he let go....
The robot imitations made me laugh. The bad thing is, I was also a little embarrassed for them. I've only watched the first minute and a half but Weckl looks like he's straight out of 1986 but Corea looks as if it's 2004. Maybe when the lights get brighter, or if they get brighter, I'll be able to see a little better.
Say what you want about Weckl. The fact is, he was named one of the top 25 drummers of all time by Modern Drummer magazine. Probably way better than anyone you know. Rumble is not a groove song. If it were, he would have no problem grooving you under the table.
This tune was released a couple months after I graduated from high school when I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do with my life. same story for me, but instead of weckl it was steve gadd...
You guys have to remember this was the 80's
That's no excuse.

I bet Weckl was glad he was behind the kit and didn't have to do the C-3PO having a stroke routine.
He he... Patitucci wasn´t half bad :)
LOLOLOLOLOL
What in tarnation was that?
😆Yea,I thought that was pretty stupid.
yeah that was cringe worthy
Patitucci does the best robot.
Hahahahaha agree
Gamble does the best Frankenstein.
FOR REAL
This is awesome! I've never seen Dave Weckl playing so aggressively as in the solo at the beginning. There was some serious passion in that!
The 80's left no musical genre spared of hair gel and fashion anomalies.
The composition, the interplay, the timing, the musicianship. Different level. I watched this live at 3 venues in the UK, it was jaw dropping to see.
@Will Morgan Cardiff, Manchester, London. 2 of them I think in the same week!
@Will Morgan no opening act... Straight to CCEB!!
My opinion... Chick Corea is one thee greatest musicians in modern history
One of greatest in all of history.
Mount Rushmore for sure.

Dave Weckl, ONE HELL OF A DRUMMER!
It's a great groove.
That's a great understatement.
What a strange yet captivating era of music. And seeing Chick Corea on a keytar.!! Priceless.
Chick Corea Electric Band is an 80's Metal band.

Yes, unfortunately Chick drove some great musicians away (Scott Henderson for one) with his Scientology leanings !!!###
Then you try and do the cheesy moves sir I think you're jealous myself they tore it up period
Every thumbs down is musically illiterate. This masterpiece of fusion takes Mahavishnu Orcestra to a whole new level of expertise.
I close my eyes and feel like as if I was playing the hardest lever of Super Contra on my NES back when I was 12. #SuperContra #ContraNES #Contra
'Spain' always reminds me of Castlevania: SOTN or Marvel Vs. Capcom 2!
This CD inspired generations to come. Some of the very best jazz instrumentalists on the planet were born right here.

I really enjoy Dave's drum solos from this period...
YES...! Weckl in his prime!....Love the energy and conviction in his playing!!
"In his Prime"?! Have you heard him lately?
Weckl is even better now, at 61.
Every time Chick Corea playing this tune on his keytar while looking at the audience, he always looks like telling the audience a crazy story.
rest in peace, legend
Chick is one the grestest arrangers of all time hands down! Like, what in the world???!!!!😎
And a terrific choreographer, too!!!
Great Post. Shawn lane and I went to see this concert in Little rock. THey were extremely good.
This is the version from GRP live. Amazing
Wow...I love this song. So glad I found this live version!

This piece 'rumble' is for sure setting the standard of fusion music.
