    The first CD I ever owned was The Young and The Hopeless. I don't listen to them as much as I used to (on repeat), but I still listen to CoLD from time to time. Definitely a major influence on my early music interest!

    Love the video! I started listening to GC when I was about 9. Around the time “The Young and the Hopeless” came out. When I got older, I started listening to heavier bands and just stopped paying attention until “Youth Authority” came out.
    Now at age 31, I owe them a lot that began my love for music.

    I started listening to good Charlotte in 03. My older friend busted out a cd player on the bus at 6 in the morning and it blew my 11 year old mind. The good Charlotte to MDC pipeline does exist.

    It's so funny that Good Charlotte, while not technically punk in the traditional sense, ended up introducing me to a lot of punk I ended up liking..even stuff that was well before their time. Same kinda happened with Nu-metal bands because funnily enough, some of them cited old 80's new wave groups as part of their influence. I've also had my screen name as Evapunk since like the 2000's because of the band Orgy (who has a song called Eva) and because I ended up liking a lot of punk rock music. All music is wonderful because how it makes you feel...that should really be all that matters...

      For real, so many bands. I didn’t know about them back then, though. I think I was like 10 when I heard them and had no idea how to find new music, so I’d just grab random CDs at FYE and listen to the previews haha

    I saw Good Charlotte open up for I think Showoff or some other pop punk band in the late 90s. They looked like a buncha preppy/jock dudes playing music that if you squint hard enough could be pop-punk-adjacent.
    I then saw them at Warped, when The Young & Hopeless or whatever dropped. In just a few short years, it was a total transformation.
    Sorry, but fuck this band.

    Good, thorough vid man! I was one of those (2 punk 4 Good Charlotte) gatekeepers back in the day. Now I feel bad about it honestly. They’re good musicians who worked their butts off with the same influences that plenty of other bands I listened to had. That “reject the mainstream” narrative of early 2000’s was like a shared form of hysteria. I think we all just tried too hard to be cool back then. I slept on quite a few good artists because of a misguided elitist attitude. Example: just got into plain white T’s in 2024. Also the person who said you have “millennial hair” is super mean. Little comments that cause people to have complexes about their appearance are truly nasty/ not cool.

    • @soundofhistory_
      @soundofhistory_  6 месяцев назад +1

      That's super interesting to get that perspective! I think the irony is that I, as a Good Charlotte fan, also looked down on people who liked different music since I thought I was cooler than them. I've also matured out of that, but it's funny how every group finds some reason to look down on others.

    • @loompy1440
      @loompy1440 6 месяцев назад

      @@soundofhistory_ I think it’s because we were all surrounded by intense gatekeeping, people who made music their whole personalities, and at least among my peers people would gossip about you and shun you in the music scene if you came off like a poser or crossed the wrong person in the little alternative hierarchy. I’m gay and there was a lot of homophobia in the punk/ hardcore/ and metal scenes in my town. I would sometimes over-compensate due to a perceived shortcoming not feeling tough/ masculine. Anything feminine I did made me an emo f slur. There were approved and disapproved of bands. In general the local music scene where I live was toxic as heck. All that said, I’m glad I took part in it and learned how quickly trying to fit in can compromise your self respect.

    I like how it’s just implied that Benji’s relationship with Hillary caused her major trauma while speaking about how their families are close and they’re lifelong friends…what?

    • @soundofhistory_
      @soundofhistory_  4 месяца назад

      Definitely didn’t imply that. It was Joel, not Benji. Current friends does not equal lifelong friends. Current friends doesn’t always equal no past issues. I think you might need to rewatch that part

    • @KPtheViewer
      @KPtheViewer 4 месяца назад +3

      @@soundofhistory_ yea my bad on Joel/Benji mixup there. What I don't understand is considering all the surrounding info provided regarding the relationship, given the mother was the one to make it public (indicating she was happy to announce it one year later), Hillary saying he treated her better than any boyfriend she had prior, they remain friends nearly two decades later...where are the indications that would necessitate bringing up ideas of trauma that needed working through? Or indications that her being treated well was just PR talk instead of the truth (beyond normal/healhty relationship challenges where everyone throws up a facade publicly)?
      It's just very odd to say that everyone including immediate family was happy with the relationship, but throw in implications that there was trauma that needed working through. Where the trauma comes in to play is what's stumping me.

    • @soundofhistory_
      @soundofhistory_  4 месяца назад +1

      @@KPtheViewer The PR talk came up because she said it wasn't physical when she was a Disney actress and later, as an adult, said it definitely was. The idea that there might be trauma to work through comes from the fact that he was a 25 year-old full adult and she was a highschooler.
