Beckham was a very good footballer, but if anything he got too much credit.

I don't like Beckham as a person tbh, I think he's a fake, but I can't dispute that he gave everything on the pitch for England. The myth is that he dragged us single handedly into a world cup against Greece, which is sort of true (ie he pretty much did win that match on his own, but we would have gone to a play-off if we lost, which we probably would have won to get into the WC anyway), but as someone who gave up on club football a long time ago, I never, ever got the feeling that he wasn't giving everything for England.
I think playing for their country is a negative to many England players these days. It doesn't pay the bills, and unless you do well in a major international championship, it doesn't add value to your 'brand' and you could get injured which messes up your club career. Beckham was one of the holdovers from the previous generation, where they all played because it benefited them personally, as well as the patriotic aspect, and I will always respect him for his contribution to England.

@Joe Bloggs I look at each players involvements in those 2 goals as somewhat fate and typical of the players involved. Becks with his typical never say die spirit with the crosses, Teddy with his typical intelligence scrambling the ball on target for the first goal, then flicking the ball into a typically intelligent area for Ole to typically flick a leg to turn the ball in a direction to typically give keeper no chance. Of course all only possible because of Keanos typical team play and competeitive drive in the semis. Good Times.

Always thought the best weapon this united had was Beckham and Giggs switching the ball from one wing to the other. A defence would align for a Giggs cross and five to ten seconds later they would be in disarray facing a cross from Beckham. Never seen a side doing this as efficiently before nor since. Beckham also developed other parts of his game when he moved on. His defensive game was almost nonexistent at Utd but really came on in Spain.

@@andybirch3750 go watch the games again his defence definitely improved in Spain. Giggs nor Beckham defended that well until later in their careers. Utd had great fullbacks to facilitate this. Plus the league during their formative years did not require them to be that good defensively. Butt did a lot of unbooked dirty work, keane, neville, irwin, and others did the defending. I was a keen student of the premier league back then and the two wingers were 75% attack 100 % run 10% defend.

Even though United went on with Ronaldo and Rooney the club never felt the same for me after Becks moved on.. took me a while to forgive Fergie for that decision. And I do believe had Becks stayed at the club we would of won even more during that time. Especially considering we were champions in 2003(Beckhams last season). Beckham is an enigma. He's possibly the richest footballer ever, but wouldn't get into the best 100 players in English history. Never mind the world's best 100/200. He maximised his talent but got too big for his boots. His goal against Greece was terrific. But everyone forgets that England would have gone to a play-off and won it easily had they not qualified that day. Unfortunately, he was only fit at his first WC. All the others he was struggling. Like Rooney, he pretty much failed when it mattered. But that's nothing unique for England's best players.
