Summary: While Maritza initially says that she is fine believing things that may not be true so long as the view provides her with value, she ends up coming around on this stance in stunning fashion.
Personal Note: Maritza, in the six years or so since I've been interviewing people, rarely have I met anyone as open and honest about their views as you. Would you please contact me privately so that we can coordinate at least one more talk together? Thank you again for participating in these chats with me, helping others see what it means to value truth, and the crucial importance of doing so.

It seemed like he was "leading the witness" and I am wondering if this in line with the principles of street epistemology. In my analogy, I was comparing it with someone who is gay and is given subtle hints that they should question being gay. It seems to me that street epistemology should be about exploring the quality of our reasoning rather than trying to debunk specific beliefs.

sjeses You can’t truly know anything. I think that’s one fundamental truth that’s essential to understanding, as once you understand it, it will be a focal point of your epistemology. The only truth you can truly know is that you can’t know any truth. You can never stop learning, and that’s why we always need to keep an open mind. This is one trap skeptics may fall into, thinking you can know something because it’s based on evidence is no different than theists who think they know based on “evidence”. The problem is that both are closed-minded to any new evidence because they think the way they formed their belief was somehow a way to form “solid belief that can’t be changed”, when no epistemology can do that.

It is funny. When I was a kid, everyone around me talked about god and said he was a thing. Then one day I was out of school for some appointment with my mom, maybe I was 7 or 8, and we went to McDonald's and I realized we didn't say the pledge of allegiance - which had just become a big ritual because that's the whole point of making kids say it, right? - and so we said it together and she left out the god part. I didn't know, obviously, that she grew up before it was added to it so it just was how she knew it. But for me it was just this flash moment where I thought about it for the first time. And as soon as the idea that you could -not- believe in a god came into my head, the belief left me. And it was a lot like that same moment in this talk for Maritza about truth. Just suddenly everything changed.

It's so refreshing to see a young, honest, articulate person who does such a good job of looking at beliefs from so many different perspectives. When I see the Pew Poll that says that 47% of Americans either "know" or "believe" that the world is going to end by the year 2050 when Jesus comes back, I realize that some people will never take climate change seriously.

I feel that some people for whatever reason need to hold onto certain myths or untrue things for personal and psychological reasons and forcing them to abandon these things would possibly lead to bad effects for them. I know 2 guys who were formerly a drug addict (heroine) and an alcoholic. These addictions had ruined their lives, family relationships and basically left them worthless to themselves and society. Both did some pretty screwed up stuff. In fact the heroine addict ended up in a fight with his own brother who was also an addict over a fix and stabbed him in the stomach and left him there bleeding while he shot up...just to get high. Both recognized they really needed help. Both tried addiction counselling, tried all the medical and counselling paths but to no real avail. They found nothing meaningful from those sessions and intervention. Both ended up in AA and went from there to get involved in deeper way with religion and both adopted religious faith. One went back to Catholicism and the other became a born again Christian. Both in the process of finding God turned their lives around, turned their relationships around and adopted points of view and attitudes which increased their self esteem and brought meaning into their lives. Both have families of their own now, wives and kids, jobs and are very much good guys. Now Im an atheist. Dont believe in God at all. However there is very much a psychological value to God if through adopting faith a person can erect a scaffold around which they can build a meaningful life and relationships. Even though this is not based on a factual truth of there being a God, it is based on a factual truth that sometimes people lack a psychological scaffold in their lives onto which they can hang meaning, purpose, and roof it with a skin of love and forgiveness from others they have harmed but also forgiveness for themselves from themselves as that was their biggest stumbling block. Psychologists, counsellors, medical science can not remove the guilt these guys felt and the powerlessness in the face of their addictions. However belief in a lie could. And I have had conversations with these guys and said to both of them, that they did this. Give themselves the credit and be proud of themselves...but both refused. Said no...without God, without their faith, they would be caught up in that world again, because their ability to live their lives as good men is utterly dependent on the grace and forgiveness of God. I know both guys well...and neither has ever tried to force belief on me or dragged me to their churches. They force their religion on nobody and it does nobody else any harm at all that I can see. Should they be forced to face the lie, and be left with no choice but to recant their belief and face the consequences of maybe ripping the psychological scaffold away to see if they can stand on their own without their faith and face their past, their demons so to speak on their own, just because rationalists believe truth is best??? Im interested in what people would have to say. To me the truth matters. But there are layers of truth, and it is true to say and factually true that some people require belief in untrue things so that they can become what they want and need to be. We cant forget that either.

Commentaries on the truth and what value it can have in one's life. As she said, believing in something false, even when it isn't harming anyone, might also make you miss the chance to have a better outlook in life. Seeing things as they are is worth it for the chances you'll have to better understand the world, or the people or yourself.
And how she got to the realization, that was pretty neat. Could she be a future Anthony using SE with other people?
