    Summary: Maritza returns for another chat, this time, to explore her belief that spirits of our loved ones don't immediately leave us after they die, and can often get thirsty in the process.
    Personal Note: Maritza, in the six years or so since I've been interviewing people, rarely have I met anyone as open and honest about their views as you. Would you please contact me privately so that we can coordinate at least one more talk together? Thank you again for participating in these chats with me, helping others see what it means to value truth, and the crucial importance of doing so.

      Good to see this young lady come to a point where she at least starts to question beliefs foisted upon her by her grannie/so much superstitions/religious beliefs are forced upon young minds by adults- restricting the youth from actively questioning long held fallacies (such as dead spirits get" thirsty"etc.)

    Maritza is a prime example of how education, at least in the US and probably elsewhere, is failing people. She is so smart. She is so able to understand quickly and untie mental knots. And, yet, until right now she hasn't been given even the first steps of how to think critically about information. What should be the first step in any education - how to know good information from bad - is simply not in her toolbox yet. The fact that most people we meet on the street can't tell you what evidence is, is astonishing. Way to go, Maritza, for being confident enough to admit when you've been mistaken. That's something to be proud of.

      It’s so easy to shit on the American educational system without giving real solution. Do you not realize that one of the issues is that the US has to deal with huge socioeconomic disparages and a distinctly and hugely diverse population? I’ve been educated in 3 countries, and yes, though other counties can push the envelope in pushing more advanced courses in high, such as Calc 3, Chem 3, or Physics 3, they do not have to deal with the social problems that we have on the US. So easy to poop without understanding the dynamics within and the huge complexity of the issue.

    • @anthonypc1
      @anthonypc1 5 лет назад +3

      @@tiwoni972mad I'd interpret flexible in context of this comment to mean something like general willingness to openly consider new ideas and ability to change one's mind with relative ease. Like mental plasticity, which tends to (metaphorically) stiffen as we get older.
      of course mental flexibility isn't the only important quality for a decent person to have. Integrity of skepticism is key too.

    This interview is a master class in asking your interlocutor a question AND THEN SHUTTING THE HECK UP to make them think about their claim. Seriously, watch Anthony ask an exceptionally good question at 13:20...and then count the number of seconds between Maritza's "Oh shoot!" and when she actually begins her answer. Meanwhile Anthony is *silent* for nearly THIRTY SECONDS--broken only by a friendly laugh--and only actually says something again after a full minute. Well done, sir. Well done!

  • @Infernovogel
    @Infernovogel 5 лет назад +113

    Wow, this made my evenening! I've been using SE techniques in conversations with my mom, who has borderline and believes (among other things) that she can read minds and see dead people. That combined with an extremely low tolerance for frustration. She feels cornered pretty much the instant someone disagrees and has a history of rage fits where she hurts herself. For years I've been just avoiding any confrontations. But after watching your videos I startet to see another way. I ask questions now and I honestly don't try to steer her in any particular direction. I just try to ask the questions I think I should use to investigate my own beliefs and it has pretty much transformed my relationship with her. It has probably not really moved her beliefs even a millimeter. But for the first time since I can remember, I can have an actual conversation with my mother and to be honest, after all these years, I am surprised at how much it actually means to me. Anthony, you have changed my life. Thank you!

    The hardest issue to face...when searching for truth (even more so than finding the truth)...is facing a sense of shame when you discover you were wrong in your belief or you've been mislead ( perhaps for a whole lifetime)into a belief or you've invested yourself into making a fallacy the truth (belief) in either a necessary or unnecessary fantasy world...to maintain comfort and/or relationships with others that do the same. Self-shame...rightful or otherwise...is a tall obstacle to climb and conquer.

Thank you for being so open and honest and allowing Anthony(and thus the rest of the world) to film you while he gives you the critical thinking tools to analyze how and why you hold your beliefs. I wish we could somehow extract that particular trait you have that allows you to be honest with yourself and spread it
    around the world....this world would be a much much better place.
    On a side note: Anthony...my man...you have come a long loooong way from your first few years of doing SE...your technique is a joy and wonder to behold...and so many times your line of questioning(not just in this video but in alot of your recent ones) caught me by surprise..I still have so much to learn, thank you for doing what you are doing.

      Sir Belphegory I think you might be referring to my talk to the American Humanist Association. But no matter-I am glad the longer discussion exceeded your expectations. Wouldn’t it be great if more people approached their views as honestly and open as Maritza did? Thanks also for the kind words about the improvement you’ve seen over the years-I’m optimistic people can watch me struggle and grow and then leapfrog ahead when they find themselves in a situation where they can begin employing SE. Thanks for your feedback.

      @@magnabosco210 I just went back and checked, your totally correct sir...my bad! Indeed It would. Yep I get into discussions all the time with my fellow colleagues at work (I am the only atheist) and I find myself getting angry and voice starts to rise and I get caught alot of the time going off down a rabbit hole to prove a point..hence your calm indirect method of analyzing is where I want to be. I've been a subscriber for over 3 years now, and have seen about 90% of your vids and I have the Atheos app which I purchased which I am battling through.

    It’s funny, I was told the other day that the house I live in, particularly my bedroom, is “haunted” by an old man - a friendly ghost. I pooh-poohed the idea. But last night, when everyone but me in the house were fast asleep, I heard the door at the bottom of the attic stairs close _by itself_ and the sound of footsteps pace along the hallway outside my bedroom, then fade off. Back in the day, the corridor that ends in a wall by my bedroom used to be open through the building next door.
    If I was spirit-minded, I might have found that convincing. But it was only a brief draught that pushed the door shut and the footsteps were just the bass from a passing car. It was interesting that it coincided with having watched this video.

    This Maritza is really hard work but Mr M's patience pays off in the end, and her good nature and the fact that she does seem to have an enquiring mind and some mental integrity (unlike so many people with indoctrinated faith in things) does get her moving in the right direction eventually. She still has a lot to learn about logic and reason and it is quite astonishing (though not unusual perhaps) that a university student doesn't have any idea about where the burden of proof lies (ie. on those making the initial claim or assertion and not on those asking to see the evidence for the claim). That's what I meant in my comment on the first interview with Maritza when I mentioned that her culture doesn't seem to value truth highly (I meant Yankee culture in general and not the particular sub-culture she comes from) because it appears to me, as an outsider and a foreigner, that a horrifying proportion of US citizens do not understand the concepts of reason or logic and therefore they think that they are entitled to believe in things just because they want to... and this makes for a dangerously irrational and deluded populace.
    This skewed attitude towards what beliefs are justified is not found only in the religious (although they are the most numerous and the most dangerously deluded... by far). I have heard highly intelligent and educated people from the sceptical and atheist communities come out with statements that are clearly faith-based and unsupported by any good evidence... it's just that their faith is not from scripture but from other, more secular sources.
    I shall look forward to watching Maritza get her third piece of the puzzle and hopefully completing her journey to rationalism, and becoming a fully thinking and aware individual who understands the difference between good evidence on the one hand and personal feelings and unjustified preconceptions on the other.

    I think I’m in love. With both of you.
    I wonder how much the focus of the first, more abstract chat - on beliefs and the value she places on believing true things over comforting, false things - helped with the progress you made. I.e. maybe using a similar approach - maybe in a more condensed form or something - for all chats would help get over some common hurdles/full-on-barriers to progress.

      Mike Jones Yes, there could be something to that. Unfortunately, most all of my talks are one-off encounters so I usually get right to the claim and then revisit truth later if necessary.

    • @MikeJones-xl3ti
      @MikeJones-xl3ti 5 лет назад +2

      Anthony Magnabosco Yeah totally understand. The downside to coming to truth later is their defence mechanisms may already have kicked in, making them less likely to think as rationally as they might before they expose themselves. I was only thinking of using something like that if you were able to condense it into a short ‘primer’, so to speak. I don’t know what form it would take (you’d have a much better chance of thinking of something than me!) but might be worth considering.

    • @greenmih
      @greenmih 3 года назад

      Great comment! I was thinking the same: what happens when you ask a person - "What is more important - the truth of a belief?" My guess is that all people with adequate mental health will answer that any belief is pointless if its not true, and they will all choose the truth. This alone can help many people start questioning themself, even before you ask them any further questions :), and it will continuously bug them during the further conversation, and it will force them, in a way, to give more honest answers. Its a good "manipulation".

  • @psychee1

    Shaking a core belief is one of the hardest things you can do. It's a pillar holding up so much of yourself that shaking or god forbid- toppling it can actually hurt.
