then you never played the original tomb raider. Tomb raider has minimal combat, otherwise it would be just another Uncharted with no own identity. TR is all about exploration, puzzles and platforming. This is the identity of TR. This is the reason why TR13 ist by far the worst TR game.
It is a great looking game, but empty...The story kinda doesn't have a point, no memorable characters, boring quests, not to mention the gameplay which didn't changed in any way from the previous 2, it kinda felt worse to shoot than Rise tbh, a wasted potential...I really wished they kept the quality from Rise of Tr ( the best imo ), that game was perfect, from the exciting plot, to the action and gameplay, everything
Great video, solid points. About Jonah tough, if I was the writer, I would make him the secret evil guy, not the head of Trinity but a Trinity operative who's up he chain. That would explain him being with Lara all this time without any interest at all. Because when you think about it, him tailing Lara EVERWHERE has no believable reason, he is just...there.
It's not that it's a bad game per se, it's just not a very good one. I've played through the two preceding titles multiple times. When (if) I ever finish this one, I won't ever go back to it. The only reason I'm slogging through it now is mods haha.
You forgot to mention that it's really weird how you can set the native people to speak their language but Laura speaks in English to them. So you'll have *native person explaining their woes with their current situation* to Laura "Oh I see, so that's why you need to get out of here." in perfect English.
Shadow had the best combat of the trilogy but they took all the combat encounters out. Enemies never respawned, and there were no expeditions (one of the best parts of Rise).
Great video man! The few times I played Tomb Raider stuff ages ago, my excitement and engagement levels were sadly minimal. That's the complete opposite for every Uncharted game that I continue to replay. I thought about getting this latest TR trilogy for very cheap some months ago, but bought other games instead. You've convinced me that I made a pretty smart decision lol.
The best one of the trilogy is Rise... but what got me about Shadow was the pointless skill tree, which made no difference to gameplay or choices whatevers you picked, but worse than that was the god awful combat, terrible stealth and especially the last act of a way OTT streched out shooter on rails to destroy Trinity.. it just went on and on and on... and the boss fight was just ridiculous and pointless.. oh yeah, and no matter how many times you died climbing 1000feet cliffs, fighting zombies, deep underwater caverns... Jonah was always there at the end... What the?, Which route did he take.. haha...... i just hope CD try harder... The best trilogy was the Legend, anniversary and Underworld... Good story, which focuses on atmosphere and exploration which is what made Tomb raider a great game.... and lara actually raids tombs... For me The 2013 Trilogy and especially Shadow was just a cash grab and Shadow was just a way of killing off Trinity in the end
8:13 "If you take your time most sections can be done in stealth." Technically true, but not fun to do. I had more fun stealthily clearing Far Cry outposts than trying to be stealthy in SOTTR.
I couldn't bring myself to finish Shadow of the tomb raider unlike the first two. That to me was a good metric of if it was any good. The middle part of the game drags.
I guess in a way, if you a veteran of the entire series, this is a correct opinion as I couldn't remember by name which one it was of the '3'. While I enjoyed the return of the 'tombs', I never grew to like the HUB system for the questing. As the game series garnered a weak crafting/RPG system, the pacing of the series also began to slow. No more was I in some fantastical movie as a bad ass, I was now - something else - looking for way more than bullets or health packs. I stopped being alpha and became beta with a bad case of Mary-Sue. That may be harsh, sorry, but the game ain't the same.
I really enjoyed the game to be honest, I enjoyed the entire trilogy, thought it had alot of passion go into the development and the Lara character model is just gorgeous looking and sounding. They couldn't have designed Lara any better than this in my opinion and I really like how they take you into the pysche of her character with certain bits and Jonah challenging her. Thought the bit where you get to play her as a child having an adventure through her estate was really cute and a nice touch too. Don't think you could have asked for anymore - stunning visuals, vast map, great Tomb challenge puzzles, superb set pieces. The way things are going, I think if you come back to the game in 10 years time and re-review it, you may well appreciate a bit more. I've played much worse than these three games.

Your opinion was very not main stream for this game. Or even this trilogy. As a game trilogy, it was ok. As a Tomb Raider trilogy, it was trash. The puzzles were lame in the first place, then the game took you by the hand and helped you solve the toddler puzzles. Very not Tomb Raider. Lara is an ugly cry baby. Very very not Tomb Raider. Everyone likes to blame its sales problems on the other games coming out at the same time, but I remember the huge backlash from fans when the first screen shots of Lara were released. It did not do well because it was not Tomb Raider. I could have enjoyed these games, but like Matthew Broderick's Godzilla from 1998, they just weren't what they claimed to be.

The Lara toddler puzzle wasn't supposed to be super difficult seeing you're looking at the adventure through the eyes of a child in that segment, so if they made it too hard then that would have made it implausible, making kid Lara out to be some kind of savant, which she isn't. At least try to have a little think before criticising. One or two of the Tomb Challenges were actually quite difficult, many of them were average difficulty depending on your problem solving skills. To say they weren't Tomb Raider like is a little bit silly to be honest, these Tombs were more intricate and detailed than we'd ever seen them. If I'm being super critical, some of the trinkets you discovered started repeating themselves later on in the game, that's the only thing I can blatantly see that you can maybe warrant some criticism against there, same with the NPCs after a while too. I would actually have preferred your natural survival maintenance be tested a bit more like the first reboot too, my only other criticism. Calling Lara ugly - are you kidding me? This was the best looking and most believable version of Lara they ever did. The first reboot was the only decent one. The fear of survival and even quality of dramatic stunts is kinda missing in the sequels! Speaking of sequels, the naming of this franchise was terrible! Which one did she 'Rise'? When was she a 'Shadow'? Shouldn't she first be a Shadow, then Rise into the tomb Raider? I laugh at some of these comments, cause they continually compare it to the older games, mainly 1 through 3. To be honest, tomb raider, rottr and sottr were meant to be the beginning stages of what made Lara Croft who she was later on in the series, not a replacement. The combat is something that I've enjoyed, cause just going from one tomb to another, gets pretty repetitive, which is something you'll see alot in 1 through 3. Some of the side missions can be a nuisance, but others can be fun to do, if you're willing to take the time to do them, and not try to rush through the game. As far as people comparing it to Uncharted, I would say those two games are completely different from each other. Tomb Raider was meant to be more about exploring and tomb raiding, while enjoying the ambience of each area. And yes there was patches of combat in the original games, but there was few and far between. Overall, I really enjoyed rottr and sottr, because I really like to see how Lara developed as a character, going from someone scared and not knowing how to handle herself, to becoming a complete badass and using her surroundings to her advantage.

Out of all the games.. the FIRST is the most "polished" as you call it. Because there is nothing in that game that is not there with careful consideration. Rise was just so bad because it had far too much junk all over the place. Cans, Bottles, Radios, Challenge items, boxes, crates, ammo, coins, caches, documents, audio logs, lock pick boxes, lockers, side quests, a shop, animals, animal challenges, the list goes on.. and on.. and on.. and on. It's just so tedious. And what is so bad about this... Is the fact that none of it makes any difference to combat. You shoot them in the head for max XP points - done. I hated Rise so much that it has put me off playing Shadow. Has the same issue with Horizon: Zer0 Dawn - manageable & replayable. Forbidden Breast - over bloated generic mess of a billion upgrades.. bore fest. Avoid ever going through all that again. Take Titan Fall 2. It has what it needs. It's short but oh so sweet. TR2013 Short but sweet. GOW1 - Short but Sweet. You get my drift big man? 🤓
There's something about this game that makes me just not play it, I liked the reboot and ofc Rise is my favorite played it a lot when it came out, but I purchased this game years ago, opened it to test the disc and never touched it again, sold it and got the game on digital because on PSN these games go dirt cheap so I ended not only keeping the game but even making some money, these games are so cheap nowadays I got a CIB collector's edition of Tomb Raider 2013 for just $60 with shipping like 4 years ago
The actor who played Mathias in the 1st one was horrendous, and out the 3 that was my least favourite. Shadow without a doubt had the best graphics, some were breathtaking. But Rise was my favourite of them all as you went between different scenes as opposed to just being in a jungle setting like you are in Shadow. I love all the TR reboot games though and I play them over and over.
I feel you don’t give original Tomb Raider enough credit, you kind of sound like it wasn’t a big deal. Imo Tomb Raider was what made PlayStation so popular. The fact people still talk about it today, shows it’s more than just a background game 🤷♀️ I know it’s just your opinion, but you almost sounded shocked that it sold well.

There's almost no combat in the game, they give you all these guns and a modification system just to kill five guys every 2 hours of gameplay
That is why I love uncharted more. Puzzle and combat are spreaded evenly and it never makes you feel bored.

Don't get me wrong I like the shadow of a Tomb Raider but it did not feel like the other games and it definitely was different but not in a good way
