How to turn old-fashioned concrete gravel tiles or slabs into beautiful tiles again and pave a great new path in your back garden. A great way of reusing old building material!
Nicole’s got free second hand gravel tiles, removed old bits of cement and slabbed them with beautiful Portuguese tiles (actually made in Turkey). The advantage of using loose concrete tiles is that you don't have to pour a whole container of new concrete as a solid base. And reusing old material is environmentally friendly and sustainable.
The concrete tiles are cleaned well with the high-pressure sprayer, then applied with primer with a brush and slabbed with the frost-resistant floor tiles. The joints are filled with grout, but the joints between the concrete tiles are filled with white sand to avoid cracking. These are outdoor floor tiles that can withstand the frost and are rated slip resistance R9.
Our backyard with our small swimming pool, the plunge, has undergone a great makeover. We have created a nice urban patio, which can also be used as a terrace or path.
You can use this video for ideas and inspiration of how paving your own - maybe small and urban - patio.
We planted shadow plants, but you can also use lush plants for patios and decks to create an oasis in your backyard!

@@evaperez4139 Eva: you can rent some of the power tools - from places like Home Depot, Lowe's etc. Depending on where you live, people like us now retired and no longer needing to do our own projects, so have far too many bits and pieces tool-wise (he also inherited a ton of things from his Dad when he passed). It's long past time for us to pass them on. Basically, you begin with a good hammer, hand saw and a decent set of screwdrivers AND a really good quality measuring tape. The rest you accumulate as time goes on. As a young married I decided to install all my own floors in our new home (never having done so before), so got books from the library and jumped in, destroying my father-in-law's good wood chisels in an attempt to level my lumpy concrete slab floor at the time. BIG mistake I never made again, but that's how we learn. Today we have the internet and youtube with wonderful videos and talented people like Nicole to show us the way. :)

she didn't set the tile quite right...you trowel in one direction so when you set the tile it does not form air pockets between cross hatched thin set. You are also supposed to back butter the tile before you set to ensure proper adhesion. Water exposure as well as the freeze/thaw cycles will shorten the life span of this project for these 2 reasons.

I watched from beginning to end, I couldn't stop watching. I wanted to see the end result, not just the pool but the tile in the garden. She is amazing and to go to work every day as well. I commend you, you are truly blessed. Your husband and kids should be so proud to have a wife and mom like you. God Bless!

Congratulations on your terrific work. I just love the fact that your a mum and can do this. Your an inspiration to me. I am teaching my own mother to use my power tools to build her own planter boxes and now she is learning mosaic and applying it onto her own pot plant holders that she has made herself. In her whole 68 yes she has never had anyone show her to do these projects. She is so happy and I just love seeing other women doing these sort of projects. Thank you.

So inspiring. Also clearly need to up my parenting boundaries as I noticed her son was perfectly happy to entertain himself while she was working...

    • @AdriCr4ft
      @AdriCr4ft 3 года назад

Honestly... it depends on the child.
My first who is now 5 was an angel.
He would entertain himself a lot. My now 2 year old girl is the complete opposite. She cries and she will shout until I come, the only way I can get her to stay in the living area a bit for me to tidy up is by giving her a water bottle that doesn’t spill so much and off I go... she spends the time spilling water into her tea cups and drinking off of them... and making a mess too.
But at least is water 🤷‍♀️
She is always surprising me with her naughtiness levels.
Listen to this... as her hair is longer I put hair clips on her hair holding her fringe up. You know what she did while I was busy clearing up?
She switched the tv off grabbed her hair clip and stabbed our tv with it and scratched it all. Or in her head, I just turned this beautiful tool into a pencil and this tv is my perfect canvas.
      This was today.
I never imagined a hair clip could be such a powerful weapon.
My son was sleeping on his own since little. He got his own bed and bedroom at 1.5y with his own drawers and wardrobe. There was never a problem. I never even needed to ever use a gate.
I had to buy 2 for my daughter.
She also got her own bedroom at same age as her brother with her own furniture... guess what lol
I spent a week folding clothes and putting them back!
How did my son fall asleep... I would just give him his bottle from very young and let him be, shut the light off and close the bedroom door.. he would be asleep never getting up...
You know what my daughter does?????
Instead of drinking her milk she spills it everywhere along the walls!! The floor!! And even inside drawers!!
      Lmao
Her furniture is now on our bedroom!
And I have stopped giving her the bottle during day in her bedroom.
She gets it at night when she goes to bed as it’s the only time she doesn’t get up at all and actually sleeps.
      At least there’s that... lol
But this is also the last moments of her doing these things as she is maturing.. and it’s sad even tho it’s hard work at times I wouldn’t change anything.
Sorry for the long comment I got ahead of myself and didn’t even realise how much I wrote!! Good luck!

Gorgeous tiles and hard work by a very creative artist! Beautiful! I have to do it! Thank you for the inspiration! I used 16 inch Terra Cotta tiles to fill in my back yard area to eliminate grass mowing, and now I need a Portuguese tile patio! Fantastic process, you are amazing!

i love the way nicole made a frame for the tiles. i have seen where folks just put the tiles down with those spacers and hope for the best. nicole's way seems the most easiest and accurate. the project turned out beautiful. my only complaint would be that I would want that floor tile IN my house as well as outside. it is sooooo lovely.

Was in Portugal in 2007. The tile was everywhere. When they removed it from the roads for maintenance they wold number them and put them back in order. Walls, roads, castles, ruins everything was tiled and you never get tired of it
