    Inspired by these videos, I upgraded my vintage Kenwood speaker, one from the pair. My solder work was horrible. I used the same circuit board and kept the old wires dangling, polyfil is from my old comforter. As per Danny, I removed all iron from the sound pathway. Cables connecting drivers to the crossover are negative/positive spaced on a duct tape. I used brass screws to fasten the crossover. I will soon do the other speaker too. It was a very fulfilling experience, thanks to Danny, it kept me busy and happy. Later on, I am thinking of sending both speakers to Danny for doing it Danny’s way. I hope Danny will appreciate my efforts before bothering him. Will you, Sir?

As I dont want to be building my own speakers and I dont really want to have to get a speaker upgraded and trust my local electronics repairer to know how to get good sound, is there a moderately priced bookshelf speaker or floorstander you recommend as a good buy ? I have a couple dumb questions, so please be patient.
    1) Can you actually hear a difference in the types of caps, resistors, etc? I know certain types are 'better' than others, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone A/B a crossover with cheap components to one with nice components to see how they actually measure against each other. Similarly, I've never in my life heard someone (even an audiophile) listen to a set of speakers and accurately predict what types of components they use before taking the speaker apart.
    2) Why does balancing the impedance matter? If the tweeter is pulling 20 ohms where the woofer is only pulling 6 ohms, why is that bad if the speaker measures flat? I know the ohms affect the power drawn from the amp, but if it's up in the tweeter range, the woofer will dwarf anything from the tweeter circuit in terms of power requirements, wouldn't it?

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 3 года назад +2

      Audible differences between caps are easy to hear in most systems. When taking basic measurements of the speaker itself the higher quality caps do not alter the response or measurements.
      I never predict what parts will be used in a design before evaluating it to see what is needed.
      Balancing he impedance matters quite a bit. Different types of amplifiers react differently to different loads.

    It turns out that the lacking frequencies in the response are ones I usually EQ down anyways. Having the option of the sharper highs is nice for certain songs or types of music where you really want to hear everything, but I can reduce those frequencies if I want to. I'm starting to think that ignorance is bliss in this hobby. The more combos of gear you get to listen to, the more picky you become and start feeling a need for more gear. I like these in their flawed stock version so far. I wouldn't mind the sound being wider with better imaging though. Ooops, I better not start that..

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 3 года назад +6

      You are getting a gated time window measurement. That is a speaker only measurement just like an anechoic measurement. Measuring lower and accurately requires the mic to be further away. So an anechoic chamber is really required. What is happening down there is easy to define from the impedance curve (tuning), and that roll off is pretty predictable. In a playback application all of that below 200Hz is completely dictated by the room.

    • @TylerStout
      @TylerStout 3 года назад

      Danny is right. He would have to do ground plane measurements as well then combine the two. Probably isn't worth the effort but that's how I believe New Record Day does it and I know how James from Audioholics does it. Only thing of value we might be able to draw from them would be if there's any resonances but it's not like Danny can do much about that aside from no res which he usually does anyway.

    Any modern amplifier couldn't give a ++++ about impedance variation.
    You have now dropped the impedance low enough to damage many modern surround receivers.
    You never show the group delay curve or phase response that your added crossover parts create.
    You never show the off axis response lower than tweeter height.
    When comparing expensive speakers to cheap speakers you never show and I doubt you even measure the power compression which is one of the biggest gains a dearer speaker can make.

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 3 года назад +1

      Amplifiers absolutely respond differently to different impedance loads.
      Most of the time I do more with less parts than what speakers often have, and I am corrected phase errors, not causing them.
      And I do measure speakers below the tweeter axis. However, the floor is often treated and the speaker is much close to the floor. So it's reflection is minimized. The ceilings are almost always complete untreated and the vertical is more of an issue.
      Power compression? You want them tested at high levels now? Nothing about the before and after of a crossover upgrade is going to have an effect like that.

      It has been noted in opinions by other audiophiles that when it comes to reproducing the sound of acoustic instruments that paper cones offer distinct advantages over many contemporary “metallized” (whatever the heck that means) materials used in the composition of speaker cones. If a person is particularly interested in, say for instance, string quartets, cello, violin, viola, etc then why would a non-paper cone be considered from a basic logical perspective. If you are listening to electronic or synthesized musical productions then ok maybe a paper coned speaker might not be the better choice for those particular enthusiastic audio listeners. Understanding the choices of music and speaker design parameters and using good information available to everyone will certainly allow for a better choice based upon audio tastes in choices of genre.
