I've had an Ibanez guitar in storage for about 2 years that I haven't touched. I tried drop tuning and got discouraged with the floating trem. I dug it out today and followed this video. I cleaned up the fret board and put on some strings I bought when I bought the guitar and I can't believe it's holding a tune. I had to play with the spring tension a bit but I took your advice and knew it was going to require patience.
Thank you Steve so much for this video. You have a new subscriber and I plan on watching all of your other instructional videos. Hopefully I can begin practicing again. This video has made a HUGE difference for me.
Ibenez it's 😊 happy nOW!
Incredible... I've been playing guitar and changing strings for fifteen years now. Don't know what compelled me to watch a forty minute video about it, but I'm glad I did. I learned something tonight, thanks guys!!!!
Great vid Steve. I need to restring my floyd tremolo guitar, and since i havent done it before, this video was very helpful.Much appreciated!
Great video guys! Very informative and straight forward. Well worth watching. I like the tip Paul gave on winding the strings around the tuning posts. I've always cut my strings after. I'll have to try this method when I do my Jackson Soloist.
Really useful, thank you Steve.
Great video, it actually made changing strings more fun. :) Thanks!
What I found out about a FR, IT'S like dialing in your scope for hunting or LRS. Once it's dialed in, you're pretty much golden. For my FR, fine tunners, half their distance is about 2.250 to 2.50 rotations from TDC/DBC, Works out for me. So another piece of advice, keep a string log on each guitar, it's like if one of your guitars has heavy E,A,D, Strings, your going to need to deal with the nut as well as the tunners and intonation for that set of Strings. Cool vid, love the detail/intell you guys put into it. Keep it up steve, good job and thanks for sharing.
Glad to see our teacher again :D good video
Thanks for the vid. Very informative as I've not done this before.
Stevey man, you deserve to have triple the views you have...you are simply the absolute best in the musical world..I just saw another vid about this and, well, im sorry I cheated on ya...never again, those guys were a joke
why not the ball end stuck in to head machine hole and get the tiny end of fat string to the bridge and cut the tiny end for bridge lock?
This way you can have more string rolled on machine head and if it breaks on your bridge you can roll off some string from machine head and lock new part , and the ball on the machine head hole is more secure in that situation , specially for live performance ?
What about the eight? How should we tune it and when? What influence it as if the 12 is not as same as 0?
More videos Steve, please :)
For years I have put the ball end of the string on the tuners and never had a problem, works great. A lot faster to change a string as well. A lot of what was shown here I would never do. Always block your tremolo. It makes everything so much easier and quicker.
Thanks for watching! And thanks for sharing! :-)

Good video. When tuning, tune Outter to Inner. You can't just tune at the Top String and work your way down, because the balance of the Trem system will keep going Out of whack! Tune the High E, then tune Low E, and work your way Inwards!
remove all strings is very bad, because of the floating tremolo when tune 1 string correct, and then tune another string the string tuned before go out of tune. so there need very often retune. much faster is when change the string 1 by new string 1. this mean replace only string 1 then tune string 1. then replace string 2 then tune string 2. this work much faster to get correct tuning even wenn you change string to thicker or thinner
Great video. Hey Steve, where have you been?
Instead of cutting the ball ends off, one nice thing you can do is put them at the other end(near the tuners). that way, your strings dont fly off at that end
Atihcin that's what I do but a lot of people seem to look down at doing it... They say it's lazy or not the traditional way to do things...
Can I use the same method on a Jackson guitar with Floyd Rose, by pushing down on the whammy bar while removing all the strings without Floyd Rose messing up?
U can have a drinking game where u drink everytime the tech says "uumm"lol
I recently purchased a new G&L Rampage with a Kahler trem system on it, I've never worked with a Kahler before, only tune-o-matic systems on a Les Paul...What is the correct method of tuning down a half step on the Kahler tremolo ? Can i just tune down and go or must some fine tuning be done ?
821KES A kahler can usually be locked to make it a fixed bridge, so you can lock it in place, tune then unlock it again so u can use the tremelo and it should be fine
ruclips.net/video/Iaex6G5qNWU/видео.html this should help if you dont quite understand
Wah Wah thanks for the help, one thing though, the Kahler system on a Jerry Cantrell Signature model Rampage is countersunk fully into the body of the guitar, making it impossible to reach the locking screw ( that is not installed anyway ), Jerry made this mod on his own G&L Rampages to add tension on the strings and keep the low E from popping off the saddle.
Thanks again Wah Wah, I have the 3 Kahler setup vids already, I just thought there would be a quicker way to either change or tune down the strings
Steve any tips on how to keep my guitar pick from flying out of my fingers .can I get in hold on I don't have as much strength in my hand. 53 now. Who is used to really like pic I grabbed way down low on the pic.
To be honest, John, it just takes time, BUT you might want to try different sized picks, as well as different thicknesses to see if something works better for you. Often, picks will come with raised lettering for better grip, and I have even heard of Gorilla Snot and things like that, but I try to encourage people not to go too far down that "rabbit hole", because then you become dependant on other things.
Most of the time, it happens because the pick is hitting the strings at a particular angle, which causes it to spin out of your hands, so you might want to think about that a little as well :-)
I think finding the right pick might be the best place to start, and just give it time.
Use Gorilla Snot !! It comes in a little jar, much like the carmex comes in. It's a little glass jar and is green in color. Stick your finger in the jar and scoop up a tiny bit, this stuff works awesome... You can buy it any most music shops or online...
So, once you put the strings again, the bridge should be in its place again by its own, right?
yes, if you're lucky
Personal preference by putting 10's on the floating tremolo? I have 9's on mine
One thing is you need to have your bridge flush so your action stays low! I messed up and restrung so my bridge was all the way up(stuck out) and my action was limbo ready…
What have you done when one of the strings broke on stage?
have a second guitar ready to go...
Fender trems CAN be floated, but it's a real balancing act to get it right. The "Nickel" rule applies.
I'm just really lost when it comes to changing strings, hopefully my teacher tells me this week but mine is a strat with a locked system and I don't even know how to change string tension or height.
+Bung The Booce to change strings, you just take them off of your guitar and put new ones.
Loosen them a bit (so that they dont hit you when you cut them), cut the strings, then take them off your headstock and push them back through your bridge.
To change string height, you have to move the little screws on the sides of the saddles on your bridge. (remember to loosen the strings off at the headstock a little bit when doing this. Otherwise, the string might break right above the saddle).
+Bung The Booce Yours should be a lot easier to restring than the one they showed here.
Atihcin Yeah my teacher showed how to do it but he said you shouldn't cut the strings at all, just loosen them until you can take it out from the back, he said. The saddle on my high E string got bent to the left though, can't fix that. Also does de-tuning like to Drop D or C and then back up bend your neck?
At first, i used to pull the strings through the body without cutting them, but i just found it easier to cut them. Just preference.
As for tuning down, it will change the tension in the strings. That you will be able to feel when you play. They vibrate wider and they are looser. Its fun. And no, it wont ruin your neck.
Atihcin Thanks, I definitely noticed that I could bend 1.5 tones when in Drop C and I have .10 gauge fender strings. Thanks for the help though
Ibanez floyd Rose is the easiest to change strings because they are low profile floyd rose you dont need to cut the ball end :)
Federico Ines put the ball end in the tuning machines
NORTH DAKOTA?! WOOOOO
Ich küsse dein Herz Bruder
I'm scared of a floating bridge, but I have to learn....
Helpful thank you. The green bottle needed to be moved.....
I just tried to change my strings on my strat and am pretty sure I messed up. I had a floating tremelo system and noticed that the bridge was really high after I changed my strings. Pretty sure i fucked up.
+Belethor Maybe you put on thicker strings(that will have more tension on them at the same pitch). Loosen the strings a little(so that they wont break), take the backplate off of your guitar. There should be springs attached to a claw that is screwed into the body. You can make your bridge sit flat again by tightening those screws to make the claw go further in (untill the springs have greater or equal tension to the strings). Trial and error, remember to loosen your strings, do they wont break and good luck, man!
Wait I thought u had to replace the strings one at a time to not mess up the tremelo.. is it just me?
damn paul a giant
good job, thanks for putting this together
just a question or two
1) why not, string through tuner peg, down to bridge, lock string ,turn tuner peg ,cut string once or is it whatever works?
2) my understanding, with Floyd rose, you should never let the trem fall all the way back with out a load. you could damage the pivot of the bridge and chip the knife edge. is there truth to this?
+joe ZIP 1. i have seen people do it that way and i have seen people bore out their tuners that way. That's why I always cut them.
2. I also like to block the trem or if my guitar doesn't need cleaning, i'll change one string at a time.
+joe ZIP I like to block them too, but i dont think that the knife edges would break..... Maybe they do? i dont know.
Atihcin Knife edges won't break they will dull over time.
Yes, thats what i was thinking. If they get dull, you can file them down a bit.
Anyone ever thought of cutting the other end and not cutting the ball end off and just stringing it up like that ? Just a thought .
Thanks for watching, Anthony! :-)
