  • Nick Cousins gives us a complete breakdown of how he restrings a Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar. Most of the techniques are transferable to any guitar, but he shares with us a few "strat only" techniques as well.
    Included in the video:
    1. How to remove the existing strings
    2. Cleaning the neck and body
    3. Basic maintenance (tightening the machine heads)
    4. Installing new strings
    5. Proper technique for wrapping the string around the machine post
    6. Tuning

Oh my goodness, evreytime i change my strings for the past 6 years, im always going back to videos for reassurance, trying to get the right knots and bends and things when restringing, my strings would always sit kind of ugly on the peg, turns out it doesnt matter, followed this guys advice, its so simple i dont have to go back anymore, just turning the tunning peg is enough. Awesome video, plus this guys doing what he loves and it makes me happy for him!

From someone who has never changed strings (but will tomorrow) - many thanks for this - most of the videos I have watched so far recommend "fancy knots" or "over and under" - but I see from your old strings that isn't really a good idea.
P.S. You look like a younger version of the lead singer / bassist from "Rush"

I like to string it like this: one wrap over the top and the rest underneath, it tens to lock the string in place, i just do it like the pro guitar techs.
On my strats they have the vintage tuners so i cant use other stringing methods than the normal way.
I always stretch the strings and put some Big Bends nutsause in the stringnutslots and also some at the sadleslots. I also check the intonation with my strobe tuner :) great and funny video...please do a new restringing video but with a les paul or a SG :)

Nice video, but with the string replacement, you forget an important step. After you wind it up, you have to stretch your strings. Then tune them and stretch again. I Always stretch my strings 3 times at a minimum. So after 3 times stretching I tune them and almost every time they hold their tuning steady. I love these videos, so you also get a thumbs up. I also subscribed, and I am curious about your other content. Well done, my friend. Well done.

Hi Nick, great video, so funny too :)
I have been trying to restring my Strat using 'traditional' techniques, you know, the pass the string through the post, pass the end of the string under, then loop over then wind on, but have ended up breaking strings.
This is the first time ever that I am faced with the task of restringing ANY guitar that I have and just want to get my baby restrung without any fuss so will try your method to see if it works and keeps my guitar in tune.
I do have some questions that I would like to ask if I may please.
    1. How many string loops should each string post have
    2. How many times should each string be stretched and tuned up to pitch before the string settles and stays in tune
    3. What is the tuning stability like

    • @flouisbailey
      @flouisbailey 7 месяцев назад

I'm no expert but 1. Some, 2. Until they settle, 3. Once per year if out of tune (Keith Richards).

Wowww...I would NEVER squirt oil directly on the fretboard! Not a good idea at all, because: 1-oil can seep between the fret wire and fretboard wood, potentially causing problems like loosened frets (the first time you do it, probably not...but if that's your method, then you're asking for it eventually)....and, 2-the wood will get unevenly oiled, which you can see very clearly in this video, at 11:06 Some parts of the wood will get over-soaked with oil, and other parts will stay dry. It's WAY better, and much easier to get good results if you apply the oil to the cloth, then use that to wipe down the fretboard.

🤨Heads-uP, something i did not know as a newbie... If the new string Gauge, doesn't Match the Old string's gauge; then the Floating bridge's position will change the set-up angle of the said Floating bridge!😬 Solution: Get .008 - .038 Light strings or adjust the tensions springs inside the back panel. Lots of info on the web of how to do that but it is disconcerting to see the bridge at that angle.
