    Awhile back I had put new strings on my Strat and it still sounded dull and had a rattle every time I hit the low F&G notes on the E string. I’ve been meaning to take it in and get it worked on, but just hadn’t done it yet. I searched RUclips and found your video and decided to try it myself. I bought the measuring gauges and tools, put new strings on and dove in. I followed step by step what you instruct here and found that everything was off a little bit. After I was all finished with the adjustments I plugged it in my amp and started playing. I was blown away at how awesome it now sounds. Clear, crisp and in tune all over the fret board. Thank you so much. I am very happy.

    Thank you for this video. I remember being taught "never mess with the truss rode unless you're a professional", and that doing slight adjustments would basically cause it to explode. This video gave me the confidence to finally try to adjust my guitar on my own.

    Strats are new to me as I've been playing LP style guitars previously. I've come back to this video for reference multiple times. I landed me right where I wanted to be each time.
    I like the way each section had a what the 'guy did before me, what the factory says, and what I like' explanation. It reflects your own experience and I think I paid closer attention because of this.
    Thank you.

    Just wanted to say you did a very good job of explaining all the basic procedures to setup a Strat.. Simple and to the point, using basic tools, maybe taking the fear away for guitarists who have never done a setup before.. Well Done

  • @jimmy5634
    @jimmy5634 6 месяцев назад +2

    Pickup height is completely subjective. I like the most quack I can get. I set up the bridge and the neck first. The constant is that the low “E” side measurements are farther from the strings on all my pickups.
    Once I’ve gotten the bridge and neck set to my ears preference, I set the middle pickup to get maximum quack. That usually means a low setting and farther from the strings.
    As an aside, the hotter the pickups, the less quack.

      @@hoganshideout Hogan, do you know if the “default” of 2.4 mm (and 1.98 on the treble side) is a good starting point for “Hot 50s” pickups? I searched yesterday but I couldn’t find any info.

      @@TheRealEdgarSchmidt I think anything between 1.5mm and 4mm would be fine if it sounds good. Thank you, so much! I just bought myself a Fender Player HSS Strat off of Reverb. I got a great deal on it, because it was a B-Stock. But, I can't find a blemish on it. It was just badly in need of a setup. The strings were rusted and stuff. I've been playing for 40 years , and this is the first time I even remotely thought of working on a guitar myself. I've got it in good playing order, except I haven't tried to intonate yet. It wasn't off by too much though. I'll probably try that tomorrow . I believe it's got a couple of high frets. They're definitely in need of servicing, especially since those strings were on there that long. I'm not brave enough to try that out yet lol, so I'm still gonna take it in and have everything professionally done. I didn't have any gauges to measure anything, so I rednecked it, and got some cardboard that was pretty close to them lol.I've had it for a couple of days, and I was itching to play it! So, I found your video by trial and error. Your video is by far the best at explaining things. Thank you again, and when I have it done the right way, I'm confident I can keep up the maintenance! God Bless!🙏❤️💕❤️❤️🎸🤟😝🤟

    Great job but I still have an issue intonating the high E-string.
    I have an American Strat. It has two bolts / screws in front securing the bridge.
    My strobe shows the high E string slightly flat and I cannot shorten the string anymore because the saddle mechanism is right up against the bridge bolt. Neck relief and string height are set to spec.
    Do you have a solution?
    Thanks.

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  Год назад

      Hi Gus. Have you tried a different string? Sometimes certain strings can have a problem. Also, if you float the bridge a little more (by loosening the tremolo spring screws) it may allow the saddle to drift forward a bit more. Also, raising the action on the string will cause the intonation on that string to go sharper too.

    What about setting the neck angle correctly ? Dropping the saddles is ok to a point , but keeping them high as possible via correct neck angle setting allows for a steeper string angle over the saddles ( better tone) and avoids risk of shredding your palm on the saddle screws if they stick up too much . Shims ( or micro tilt ) are an important part of a set up .

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  10 месяцев назад

      Some Fenders have a neck angle adjustment screw, for others a shim can be necessary. Generally neck angle is fine from the factory but I'll try to do a video in the future explaining that a bit more. Thanks for the comment Bonny.

    As others have said - this is the best explained set up video I’ve watched on strats (and their trems). Thanks!
    One question… does a vintage style 6 bolt trem need any loosening of those 6 screws to allow sone movement or should they all be screwed in flush?

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  10 месяцев назад

      Thanks Simon. With a six screw bridge you want the screws to barely touch the bridge plate with the bridge resting flat on the body -- they should not be tight enough to move the back of the bridge up off the body. At that point, I loosen the screws another half turn or so, so that the bridge can move up and down freely. It's easier to do this with the strings and springs not installed -- good news is you only have to do it once! Some people like to raise the middle four screw very slightly higher which creates a quasi two point system. The next time I have my hands on a six point trem strat, I'll do a video.

    I have a Fender ultra Strat and want to lower the action on it.. my question is when I adjust the saddles with the small allen wrench do I adjust every saddle the equal amount of turns and which direction do I turn those to lower the action,?... tks much..also .I don't have a string gauge so is there anything else I can use to measure the height?.. I've heard using a dime or nickel works

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  Год назад

      You could try a nickel under the 12th fret and that would be pretty close. The strings should generally match the radius of the fingerboard so you would need to measure each string. Clockwise turning will raise the action and counterclockwise will lower the action. You might want to pick up an action gauge -- here is the Dunlop model for $10 www.amazon.com/Dunlop-Action-System-Guitar-DGT04/dp/B07QMMH5WZ/ref=sr_1_4?crid=KMIBP42GI7OZ&keywords=dunlop+string+action+gauge&qid=1677258010&sprefix=dunlop+string+action+guage%2Caps%2C120&sr=8-4

    Some recommend lowering the pickups when intonating, as the magnetic field can affect the strings.

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  2 года назад +1

      Pickup height can definitely affect intonation, due to magnetic pull, if the pickups are too close to the strings.

    Great video! Thanks! I’m curious: How much is the string guage gonna affect the tension on the neck, and perhaps its relief? Say between an .010 to .048 set and a slightly lighter .009 to .046?

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  Год назад +1

      Hi Jim. It depends on the guitar and how stiff the neck is, but going up or down one gauge shouldn't cause a lot of change to the neck. You may need to tweek the truss rod and intonation a bit though.

  • @FingalPersson

    My saddle is messed up, i cant adjust shot on it, none of my allen keys fit, not even the smallest one... that allenkey that works for my Squier Telecaster AND a cheap ass Gear4Music guitar, but does it fit the Fender Player series Stratocaster saddle, eh no.... I have fret sound on the strings now that i cant get rid off, tried to adjust the trust rod, i tried to ajust behind the saddle, to shorten og lengthen the string, but didnt help alot, and i cant lift the saddles because there aint a allenkey in this world that will fit when my default allenkey wont fit, that does fit my other guitars...
    Is it because i have the strings on?

    Floating the trem:
    Insert your 1/8" pack of post-its
    Tighten the trem springs to hold the pack in place
    Tune to pitch
    Gradually slacken the trem springs until the pad falls out :)

    But where do you set the two pivot pins ? Ive seen them flush with the top of the pick guard and some all the way down and then just backed off a half turn. My biggest issue with these pivot bridges is that height. The kind with six screws just tighten down

      Thanks Devendra. I am fanatical about washing my hands with dish soap before I play to remove oils and other junk that might wind up on the guitar and the strings. Thanks. But what to do if some strings choke when bending?

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  Месяц назад +1

      If everything is set correctly then you would need to raise the action on the string until it stops fretting out during bends. This is always a bit of a compromise on more curved boards like most Fenders. It's easier to set up LPs with low action because of the flatter radius. Also all of the shredder guitars. Fender Ultra series has a compound radius that's flatter on the higher frets and so easier to set up with lower action.
      Also remember that a floating tremolo will give some when bending strings so you have to actually bend the string further up the fretboard to get to the pitch you want than you would on a fixed bridge guitar. Again these things are compromises.

    I own a few different models (like a Telecaster and a Les Paul). Lately, I’ve been running into a strange issue with my Fender Stratocaster (with a floating tremolo). The tuning tends to shift slightly sharp or flat depending on how I’m holding the guitar or if I apply pressure to the neck or body. This seems to only be happening with my Strat, and I’m struggling to figure out why.
    A few details about my setup:
    The neck relief is currently set at 0.007 inches.
    The action on the low E string is around 2mm.
    Since I’m still getting the hang of things, I’m not sure if this is something common with Strats or if it’s more related to an issue in my setup. Has anyone else come across this? Any tips or suggestions on how to resolve it would be awesome!

    Thank you for your great video! Maybe you can heIp me with an issue. I have a Custom Strat with the American tremolo free floating and LSR Roller nut and Sperzel locking tuners. I have one problem, that I never was able to fix or even locate. When I draw the tremolo to the back, the tuning goes up a little (enough to be hearable out of tune) and when I push it down tuning goes a bit flat. I tried graphite and wd40 on all the parts, where a string could "hang", but the problem still persits. My only solution was to tune the guitar after pushing down the tremolo. That way I can re-tune the guitar after tremolo action, by pushing it down. It´s a compromise, but it works. With a Floyd Rose I never had this issue, even with excessive Tremolo action. How can I narrow down the problem? Thank you!

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  Год назад +1

      Hi Michael. Unfortunately this is a phenomenon that occurs on all floating tremolos to one degree or another and the work around for me is just to use the bar to bring the guitar back in tune as you are doing now. You can lesson the tuning issues to be almost imperceptible if the tremolo is working correctly and there are no places where a string can catch like the nut or string tree, so definitely check that. Also check out Darrell Braun's video which touches on some of this. Good luck! ruclips.net/video/jFzf7pPRALM/видео.html

    Thank you for this great video - I have a 97 standard, so this helped tremendously. When using the .10 feeler gauge for neck relief, will there be a slight lifting of the string when it’s inserted over the fret? Or should there be no movement at all? I find it difficult to tell when it’s at the right level.

    • @hoganshideout
      @hoganshideout  Год назад +1

      Hi Thomas. I adjust the neck so that the feeler gauge will fit between the string and fret as tight as possible without really moving the string. You may need to sort of angle the gauge as you slide it under the string. Thanks for checking the video out!

      Set it high
      Put the feeler gauge underneath and tap the string down against the gauge
      Keep lowering and tapping
      Once it's snug, the tap tone will change
