Music gear and information -- guitars, amps, pedals and more.
My name is James and I starting playing guitar when I was 5 years old and bass at 12. Bass is my main instrument and I played in bands all through my teens and 20s. I also worked in a music store for about 10 years, and in addition to selling guitars and amps I did repairs and setups. Today I have a regular job but I still love the gear! Thanks for checking the channel out!

Music City Bridge locking studs!
Since trying to learn guitar again over the last few months, getting my old Gibson acoustic fixed and buying a super cheapy to practice with, learning to set up, I now know what is meant by "intonation." Thank you, Hogan!
Thanks Irving!
Sound the same to me..
Guitar setups at guitar center really expensive
My Junior is the same way. It's a Gibson trait unfortunately. It's kinda sad that my $450 Danelectro 59 nos+ bridge is as solid as it gets...
Thanks. But what to do if some strings choke when bending?
If everything is set correctly then you would need to raise the action on the string until it stops fretting out during bends. This is always a bit of a compromise on more curved boards like most Fenders. It's easier to set up LPs with low action because of the flatter radius. Also all of the shredder guitars. Fender Ultra series has a compound radius that's flatter on the higher frets and so easier to set up with lower action. Also remember that a floating tremolo will give some when bending strings so you have to actually bend the string further up the fretboard to get to the pitch you want than you would on a fixed bridge guitar. Again these things are compromises.
Hey we would like to invite you to try out some featured products if you want! Love your content!
A roller saddle bridge helps keep it in tune as does changing the machines for Wilkinson WJ45 types that should fit the hole spacings.
What a great video. Thx
Thanks Rudy!
Thanks for a great explanation of how to set-up the g5427tg. I saw you adjust the pickup height using the screws on the sides of the pickups, but the page you suggested we download from Gretsch under "Pickup Height" states that "...Filtertron and Dynasonic pickups are mounted directly to the guitar's top and are not adjustable." I am not sure how to reconcile what I saw you do when adjusting the pickup height with what Gretsch recommends. Are these not Filtertron pickups in the g5427TG? I know it has been a while since you made this video but I would appreciate it if you are anyone else can answer the question about pickup height adjustment. Thanks
Hi Mike. Some of the Gretsch pickups are probably not height adjustable, but most of them are and all of the ones I've come across are. Here is another note from Gretsch on height adjustment. gretschguitars.com/support/pickup-adjustment
@@hoganshideout Thanks very much. I am new to setting up guitars and wanted to be sure I understood the procedure.
Would help if they had told us before I superglued the damn button to the countersunk screw after it kept loosening and falling offf !!! 😮 & No way it fits in the case with a strap locked (unless the strap is Spaghetti ! Now the screw is ripping the wood .. complete mess ☹️
Sonic research s2200
I noticed this the other day on my Junior.
What if your bridge saddles are too high or low from the get go doesnt that effect the truss adjustment?
You can buy a tonepros wraparound bridge ! It looks the same as the original. They intonate even better, but most important of all to you: They have locking studs. If you dont know what these are theres a vid on youtube explaining how they work -> ( how to install mcb locking studs). Basically you can tighten the posts in such a way, that the bridge is clamped, so theres no play and it cant tilt.
I have the 40th gold P-bass and Jazz bass. Love them
Excellent step by step bravo I will setup my fenders now
Thanks for the comment SandMusic!
Thanks for this, i changed the strings, adjusted the truss rod, cleaned the fingerboard etc all today. Question around the bridge, when i tried adjusting the wheel, it just lowered away from the bridge rather than lowering the bridge? I used an allen key instead on the top of the bridge and i think that has lowered it. mine is a 5655tg so may be slightly different?
Hi Hogan,,, does your daughter still have her V7??? Was it the better choice over the player Plus? Im trying to decide which to buy.. cheers
Hi Lincoln. Yes she still has the Sire but she is playing her P bass more at the moment -- it's only 7 pounds 13 ounces. From my perspective, I'd rather have the Fender but that is in large part because I grew up with Fenders. Both are really good basses.
@@hoganshideout Thanks heaps for the reply Hogan... yes that Fender name does add value too it! Thanks again.
Fender custom shop is the real mass production strat with quality you expect. Unfortunately they’re. A lot of money, got mine 20 years ago, best strat I ever touched (including a 1960) Even that requires a good set up. You need to cut the nut slots wide enough so the strings don’t pinch at the nut.
Hello my friend, did you measured the nut width on both? It seem that the Korean have a wider nut!
Hi Tropical. I didn't measure the nut widths on these, but I can say that the 5427 has a fatter neck than the 5420.
I own a few different models (like a Telecaster and a Les Paul). Lately, I’ve been running into a strange issue with my Fender Stratocaster (with a floating tremolo). The tuning tends to shift slightly sharp or flat depending on how I’m holding the guitar or if I apply pressure to the neck or body. This seems to only be happening with my Strat, and I’m struggling to figure out why. A few details about my setup: The neck relief is currently set at 0.007 inches. The action on the low E string is around 2mm. Since I’m still getting the hang of things, I’m not sure if this is something common with Strats or if it’s more related to an issue in my setup. Has anyone else come across this? Any tips or suggestions on how to resolve it would be awesome!
I've just got a 6128-57 in Cadillac green, also with gold plated hardware. It's my third made in Japan model (along with three Electromatics), and it's beautiful. I did try to resist it (I mean, who needs that many Gretsches? I'm not Randy Bachman), but the look of that green, with the slight sparkle to it, and the sound of the Dynasonic pickups, i really couldn't resist it. The nut has taken a while to free up - there were a few pings from that end which put the thing out of tune when I used the Bigsby for a few weeks, but it seems to have settled in now. The Synchrosonic (or Melita) bridge felt fine to me straight away, but the base isn't pinned so it has a tendency to slide around a bit. Im going to have to use some double-sided tape under there, I think!
how much should it float? how sharp should it go when you go up? I just adjusted it a bit, when swapping string gauge, but I think I might have floated it a bit too little right now. I don't think it goes sharp enough when going up, so I'm going to adjust it again, which means I'd have to check the string height and intonate it again i suppose!
Check out page 12 for Fender's recommendation: www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Original/10001/leg_gtr_2003_Fender_Guitars_and_Basses.pdf
Thanks for this tip. I was all psyched to get some cheap ones (I don't need it to say Fender) and may still do so, but now I know what to watch out for.
Thanks for the comment Brian!
Amazing
Does it stay in tune when you bend the G string or does It go flat?
Hi Gabriel. It stays in tune great bending any strings. You can see slight changes if you use something like my sonic research strobe tuner, but a light bump of the bar centers the note right back. Any change that is noticeable on the strobe tuner is imperceivable by the ear. This is a characteristic of any floating trem, even Floyds, but it's not a problem in real world playing and it is certainly no worse on a player strat than any other floating trem.
Hey man, does your daughter still play the Sire, do you have any other negatives on it now? I was surprised it had average fret ends, were they rolled? I think now they say they are. thanks
This was a great video with excellent straightforward explaination. Thank You Sir.
Thanks Jason!
$230 retail. GC had Sonic blue floor model and it was on sale for $150 for the 4th July sale. The middle lock broke off and GC dropped it to $100 flat. It fits my Sonic Blue Mustang a little tight but it works great
I see on the link there’s a Fret Leveler and a Fretboard Leveler. They look identical. One is $5 more. Which one to get?
Hi Jason, I have the fret leveler and I haven't tried the fretboard leveler. They are different though and if you are getting it to file frets (fret ends too) get the "fret" leveler.
@@hoganshideout i appreciate the tutorial. This is no doubt is the best one I seen and thank you! But realized the tools and supplies add up a good bit. The local music store guy said he’d do this for $80. That’s hard to beat and I for one really love to DIY tinker lol. I honestly see how this setup could benefit if your doing work to several guitars or no local/reasonable priced/good guitar shop/techs are in your vicinity. Again, great work sir!
@@jasonkennedy2348 Thanks Jason. It's best to try things like this on an expensive guitar first to get the hang of it before working on more expensive guitars. Good luck.
Tighten the Springs until the pad falls out on its own
I just bought a Harley Benton CST-24 with the DLX GTB wraparound bridge. MAYBE a couple of .001's tilt, needs a little clearance. I worried about the intonation when I first got it. Had to adjust the low E side a little but it's spot on.
Great video..I too hate the 5 position switch..
Thanks Michael!
all reviews have same issue, it sucks because they are beautiful cases hope they revamp them
Or you can rub the internal part of the rubber qith some silicone spray or other greasy lubricant do stop friction between the strap and rubber stopper, that can work as well
Me too i love 1/3/5, i use 2 and 4 just when i record funky for a background riff
Just bought my 1st strat and watched this video. So informative and easy to understand. Thank you for sharing this information. Time to set up my strat the right way 👍
Thanks for the comment Kirk!
Really good instruction here. Helped me get rid of some fret buzz I had going on by just starting at the beginning and working my way through it. Got the neck adjusted in easily and the action came out great!
Glad to hear that, thanks for the comment Chris!
But where do you set the two pivot pins ? Ive seen them flush with the top of the pick guard and some all the way down and then just backed off a half turn. My biggest issue with these pivot bridges is that height. The kind with six screws just tighten down
There is a description here: fendercustomersupport.microsoftcrmportals.com/en-us/knowledgebase/article/KA-01901 Generally they are screwed all the way down though.
Thank you for this walk through on setting up a strat. I followed each step and it worked really well!
Thanks for the comment, glad the video was helpful!
Awhile back I had put new strings on my Strat and it still sounded dull and had a rattle every time I hit the low F&G notes on the E string. I’ve been meaning to take it in and get it worked on, but just hadn’t done it yet. I searched RUclips and found your video and decided to try it myself. I bought the measuring gauges and tools, put new strings on and dove in. I followed step by step what you instruct here and found that everything was off a little bit. After I was all finished with the adjustments I plugged it in my amp and started playing. I was blown away at how awesome it now sounds. Clear, crisp and in tune all over the fret board. Thank you so much. I am very happy.
Hey Jimmy, that's great. Really glad the video was helpful and thanks for the comment!
Music Cty bridge is the top for replacement bridges and studs,
Gibson is a poor example of build quality. Collings is at the pinacle of electric guitar building quality.
I swapped the tom bridge my vintera jaguar came with and tuning stability went up instantly but was still not satisfied, swapped to locking tuners and it helped big time but still was not perfect, i used lubricant on ALL points where the strings pass and i can go crazy on the tremolo without it going out of tune now.
Thanks for the info PDP. I actually installed a tusq string tree and that made a big difference (plus making sure the nut is properly lubricated). I can work the trem like Brad Gillis now and the strat stays in perfect tune!
Hey bulldog
This video is in my experience misleading. The problem is that if you back the bridge off it will as noted tilt which will bring the top of the bridge closer to the nut, negating the effect of backing it off. If you back it off more the problem is increased. When it tilts a lot it starts to get really noisy at the bridge and the guitar sounds harsh and shrill. Search the internet on how to tame a harsh Junior. The solution is to put the bridge in flush with the studs and back off carefully. It will get as good as it is going to get way before you get a lot of tilt. Not perfect, since it is just a straight bar. When you don’t have a lot of tilt the guitar will come alive and sound like you hoped for. At least it did with mine after I went in and corrected what the “expert” had done when I took it to him to set the guitar up.
this solution doesn't make much sense. How does backing it off carefully change the tilt. It won't.
The era 2025-2030, the tubeamps are in a museum and the market is crashed. Fender don’t manufacture any tube amplifiers anymore. The Fender Tonemasters…….we know.😮
Outstanding. You are very articulate and coherent. Thank you
Thanks Dave!
I have a tip, I put a very small piece of adhesive tape around the button screw (it doesn't damage the thread) I screwed it back gently and once in place, it creates a sort of resistance which prevents the button from loosening on its own.
Thanks for the tip!
