Good video. I love my Floyd Rose! I wanted to point out a problem I had. Mine would make a "click" sound when you pressed down the arm. Drove me crazy. Sometimes it would go away. Couldn't tell where it was coming from. Sounded like it was the springs or the bridge hitting the pick guard. In that area, or maybe the bolt on neck complaining, but it was not. It was those screws that hold on the nut. They were loose, so the whole nut was moving when I pressed down on the tremolo arm. Since most nuts are glued in place, I didn't think about it until I started doing some online research. Fixed it last night after suffering with it for years. Works great now. Smooooth and silent!! Good info, especially for the Floyd haters. I believe the people that say they hate Floyd's simply do not understand how to set them up. I do understand them and absolutely love them.
I Installed a locking nut on a strat copy that still has it's vintage tremolo bridge. But based on what's at 2:08 onwards, by adjusting the tension bar it should work, even though I have no fine tuners on the bridge. Thank you!
Excellent video. I came back to watch it again because I forgot parts of it and was going to mess around with my Floyd Rose. Best video on the topic. Saved me some head-aches.
Excellent! The sharp on locking down the nut really is a pain. Didn't know about the small plate on the underside of the bridge saddles either. Thank you!
That's what I have. It's good and bad. The tremolo block doesn't have as much wieght, and the strings running straight won't be very good for sustain as well. The good is not cutting ball ends and the whammy bar uses a threaded non sleeved bar, which doesn't rattle around and stays in place using a wrench to install
I have a schecter apocalypse c1 fr s and its great. So is the floyd. I understand it well enough to change my own strings and adjust action/truss rod as well as intonation when needed. When I press the whammy bar down to the point all the strings go loose except for the second (b) and first (high e) strings. They do lose tension but not to the point of the other strings. The other four get floppy while the first and second are still under a bit of tension. Do I have the claw and springs off a bit? It has me stumped to whats the issue.
Just restringed my Floyd Rose and was super happy to find this video to solve all the problems I am having. I definitely didn't screw my string retainer enough and I had a bit of a tuning change when locking the strings in.
Can you tell me about the Fender/ Floyd Rose that came on the Deluxe Plus Strats. I've had mine since 96 and never intonated it. I have a Hipshot Tremsetter on it since I got.
Thanks for doing this video mate! I'm a drummer just and old Jackson and you helped me understand everything I needed about Floyd Rose with this short video. Thank you so much!!!!
Problem #3 (open string buzzing) can also be caused by a nut that's tilted too far towards the bridge (insufficient beak angle on the leading edge of the nut - IE problem #1 in reverse), or a worn nut slot.
Greetings from Texas USA! Thank you very much for the help on this. It solves many issues for me. I am now a new subscriber and am learning more from this channel as I watch more videos. Thank you again and have a nice day
I do not have a bar at the nut to lower to help with the sharp issue, I have a question and I think it is more about my new guitar tech issue, but here goes, if you can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I just bought a new Jackson Pro Soloist SL2Q MAH translucent blue. I love it, and when I got the strings, it had those awful DAddario strings 9-42 on them. I do not like them they sound dull. I played the guitar in TUNE for about 2 days and decided to change them to EB Cobalts. I put a plastic measuring cup handle to stop gap the floyd rose and have it set level for tuning. I got the guitar in tune, locked my nut and then retuned with the fine tuners. All was well for ONE DAY LOL. Since then, I have been playing and having to retune continuously as you mention, I go sharp, like WAY sharp on every string. So I went back to unlocking the nut and setting up the floyd level again and down tuned each string. Which when relocking, and adjusting the fine tuners, got me in tune, for about one song and then I go sharp again, and the fine tuners run out of space to move back into tune again. So frustrated with this problem, do I need to adjust the screws in the back to correct this? Or is it user error? the guitar, it is only one week old. Bummed. I only tuned the first string to the tuner, and the rest by ear by the way. But I knew I was going sharp in mid play by the song I was playing with...any help or direction? thanks for listening.
Amazing! How about the annoing problem which occours when the floyd doesn't return perfectly on the start position? I find myself always pushing down to bring it back in tune...
TheMisantropist what shape are your springs in? Maybe need to be replaced. Is the pivot points worn? Maybe unevenly worn causing it to get stuck? Only things that come to mind.
A cheaper "licensed" FR is probably the culprit. The ones I've had are horrible about returning to zero. The German FR is MUCH better about returning to zero. You also have to have the two screws that hold the springs in the body cavity properly adjusted to make sure the bridge goes back to a nice flat zero position.
Check the knife edges on your bridge pivot points , they have to be in good condition. Tip, never adjust bridge height with your strings under tension as this will damage the knife edges . Also check your pivot posts for wear while your at it.
This was a phenomenal video and explanation. Over the years, I've used hard tails, and recently purchased a Schecter Sun Valley with a Flyod Rose. This video really helped me gain a better understanding of some of the common issues people come across - VERY helpful! Thank you!! You wouldn't happen to have a video on how to adjust the action of your strings on a Flyod would you? I see there are 2 allen screws that you can use to adjust the height of the actual Floyd itself (which then lowers/raises the strings), but I've read that this can potentially crack the plate? Thanks for the help!
Ooo crap on a stick , what plate are you referring too cause i just changed string gauge or actually string brands and some of the strings are a little of a heavier gauge but it’s enough to where im going to have to intonate and play with the truss rod a bit ,but i dont need to be breaking more than im fixing any info would be greatly appreciated as im very new to a flouting bridge, 🙏 thank you
Finally bought my first Floyd rose guitar two days ago and popped both e strings while trying to tune it and almost got discouraged, luckily I have a few friends that know how to maintain them and showed me it’s not as bad when you know what you’re looking for, yeah they’re a pain but now that my strings are stretched I’ve barely even needed to touch the fine tuners
I love you man!!! This buzz from the open high E was driving me nuts, but this trick helped. Pushing the string to one side didn't help, but pushing it to the other did solve the problem. Simple solution, but big relief. Huge thanks!!!
Really cool in-depth little tutorial on things that can certainly happen however i do have a problem and looked all over the interwebs and gootube to no answer, my problem is after i set everything up and back in tune for the 1000th time if i bend the whammy bar too much which isn’t very much up or down a spring in the back pops off the bottom of the bridge! This of course throws everything out of whack resulting in pretty much doing a whole new set up because in order to get the spring back on you have to pretty much back out the spring screws all the out and in order to do that you have to loosen the the strings almost to the point where you would be restringing the guitar so you dont snap a string plus having as much play as possible to get the spring back on .The very first time it happened i didnt know any of this and fought well over 4 hrs with a pair of needle nose and a screw driver, let me tell ya, not only was it extremely hard getting that spring back on but extremely dangerous, after the 4th or 5th time this had happened I decided to shim the spring hole ,this is a pain as well but putting the thinness part of the high E string in the hole with the spring , its a super tight fit but dont pop out anymore,Thumbs up and subbed
Not to be picky, but I've been using the same FR for 33 years now, it looks like the nut you have installed is the wrong size, big gap on the edges. Also it's good to slightly rotate your mounting screws, where the base plate knife edge pivots on once in a while to keep it from wearing a grove in the metal.
I've purchased a Floyd Rose guitar recently and even though I haven't ran into any problems so far, I enjoyed a lot this video so I'll be able to recall any of these issues if they ever happen to me and be able to solve them. Thanks!
Great video, it touched on a couple of problems I'm having. But I'm also getting terrible buzzing from the saddle when the string is fretted around the 9th fret. This is on the D string. Any ideas?
Good stuff. Even if your string tree is set correctly and your lock nut mounting bolts are tight, you may experience the flat/sharp string issue. This is due to mass manufacturing, where tighter tolerances aren't feasible. As you tighten the string clamp bolt clockwise, it will ever so slighty turn the clamp clockwise as well. This means the high E will go flat, and the B will go sharp. Same effect with the other two pairs of strings. Original hand made Floyds did not have this issue, as they were made one at a time, with extremely tight tolerances. That's not to say all newer Floyds have this issue, some are better than others. Good call out on the buzzing at the nut and what happens when the brass insert falls out. For the latter, i wouldn't recommend attempting a repair with super glue - just buy a new saddle. Keep up the good work!
Not sure if you'll see this comment, but you have solved the one issue I've had with most of my licenced locking nuts(probably even my OG ones to a degree aswell), thank you! For anyone reading this who has a licenced locking nut, I think I may have found a workaround by placing a shim in one of the gaps to stop the block from turning as I tighten.
I have a problem that noone seems to mention. Whenever I tune a string, Bridge bands a little bit, and all strings go flat. Can someone please help me, I've got no Idea how to meke the Bridge not move
Hi, thank you so much for your video it has helped me a lot. I have a question regarding the first problem and sharp/flat notes when locking the nut. My guitar (Kramer Assault 220) doesn't have a string retainer or the two nuts behind the neck, so how can I make the necessary changes?
Great video many thanks. I recently bought my first Floyd Rose equipped guitar, '92 Strat, and Im experiencing many of these problems, but now feel confident to put it right. 😀
Great advice my question is I a have buzzing in the open B String near the Floyd I can't figure out what it is. I have a straight neck no fret issues and fairly high action Any advise you can give me on that?
As far as the sharp notes, I see this but my Jackson doesn't have the string retainer. So my trem is floated, but it still wants to go sharp when I use the trem a lot on my OFR Jackson Soloist.
This guy is very knowledgeable. He's probably encountered every, possible, thing that could go wrong. Also, his accent is tolerable. Thanks for an informative video session.
Love your videos! My problem is loss of sustain on the Light E over de 17 fret. Like as it was buzzing. Raising this side of bridge doesn’t solve the problem. Any clues?
Thanks for this helpfull tips, however, there's still a problem with my guitar. (JS 1200 with floyd ) The floyd is diving forward, (not parralel) while the 2 screws are screwed almost touching the wood inside. (Strings 11 - 49) Have I to add another spring ? (there is only 2 springs) Thank you for you help !
Thank you for the video. I actually learned a couple things that I did not know before. And I have been doing FR set-ups for a while. Thank you again!!!!!!
I’m definitely gonna be going back n forth watching this video, my Jackson Kelly is on its way to me and it has a Floyd rose, I have never messed with one so I took it upon myself to learn how to use it.. already it looks intimidating but I enjoy a good challenge
I absolutely love tinkering with them. Sometimes i just decide to restring and set up all 3 of my floyd guitars for fun. If you have any troubles you can message me, i have worked and dealt with floyds for 10 years now haha
Your saddle might be worn so a little trick is to leave a little bit of the thicker part when you cut the ball end off. It will give it something to grip
I'm commenting too late, but: everytime when I would bend the G string, it would go out of tune badly, along with the rest of the strings. I've found out that my G string wasn't pushed enough into the saddle(until it bottoms out), so it would always slip out when bending or using the whammy bar. The solution was to cut the little bent string end that was in the saddle before, unwind the G string more and push it in the saddle until it bottomed out. Now the guitar stays in tune.
I had to login just to thank you and give the thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍 I've heard (and watched) many explanations & videos about how to fix that sitar sound on 1st string, but either its not Floyd Nut, not said clear enough, not shown good enough, explained good enough or just advised tighten the string tree. But your video was perfect 👌 Thank You 🤜🤛 I had to pull first 0.10 pretty aggressively outta fretboard and keep the tension up while locking the nut and vóila, NO WHEREVER I MAY ROAM anymore.
Thank you, thank you and thank you once again. I just bought Ibanez with ZR tremolo and this video is very helpful. I've been actually looking for a way to stop open string buzzing for more than half an hour before I noticed you uploaded this :).
Great video. I was hoping my prob would be there, but maybe its not so common. My high e string (1, the thinnest) keeps releasing from the bridge when i bend it significantly. I can't get the bridge to hold it. How to solve that? I'm using light elixir strings, I'm guessing perhaps the elixir coating is too slippery for the bridge to hold.
Awesome video. Thank you. When i lower the bridge from studs, bridge clearly start to touch maybe somewhere, and wont Trem freely backwards anymore. Its stiff and wont come back to pitch unless i raise the action /bridge to uncomfortable playing level. Its recessed floyd. When i raise the action, FR floats nicely downwards & backwards but the action is horrible. When i lower the bridge and action, floyd feels like getting almost stuck slightly somewhere. Doesn't float freely backwards and doesn't return to pitch. If anyone can help, i would appreciate alot.
The only problem I ever had with a floyd rose is stripping one of the intonation screws, the guitar is well intonated and I will keep it with the same brand and gauge of strings pretty much forever, so I might not even have to change it for years (all the screws are like 8€ for a ss kit that is better than the original)
What about people who try to lower the action on a Floyd Rose nut route and go way too far? What's the best way to fix this problem? My guitar has been done this way. What do I do to strengthen the neck and adjust the routing of the nut?
Thank you, thank you and thank you a thousand times. I am often have most of these issues and I thought it was a built in problem of the floyd rose systems. You made a child happy today. 😃
Another way to "resolve" the issue with the brass string stop plate is to completely put the saddle all the way down with the fine tuner, then put the string in and then put the fine tuner at the desired setting (for me that will be the middle).
All the issues i saw here i did not have. My main problem is that the floating bridge after doing the whammy bar doesn't come back to correct tuning. It gets stuck in underextended position and the notes are flat and I have to pull it back to get it back in tune. I'm surprised this issue wasn't addressed here. I think it has something to do with the tension of the springs on the back is not tight enough which i adjusted many times but it still does that.
Awesome tips, So I have been having a problem where every time I dive down on the floyd it goes out of tune, but once I pull up on the bar it goes back in tune, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated? I've tried pretty much everything I can think off and done all the troubleshooting tips I could find on forums, from making sure the floyd is flushed with the body to chap stick/3-1 oil on the two mounting studs and replacing my springs in the back and both mounting studs.
I can't tell you how valuable your channel is to me and my guitars. I've been using your methods for a few years and I consider your channel to be the definitive setup guide..thanks

Thank you for helping me understand & fix the 'sitar' effect at the locking nut!
Thanks a lot! Amazing tips! I was wondering what could be the cause of all strings buzzing on first fret? I have a Floyd rose guitar.
Just restringed my Floyd Rose and was super happy to find this video to solve all the problems I am having. I definitely didn't screw my string retainer enough and I had a bit of a tuning change when locking the strings in.
nice video man, I am tired of people in youtube talking garbage for 30mins, glad I found your video!
This is the best Floyd video ever. By the way, high e string keeps going out of tune while playing, just that string. How can I solve it? Thanks
Awesome video! My EVH Frankie started not staying tune, especially my E string. This fixed it!!
Wow, beautiful guitar. Don't like the exposed screw threads on the string bar. Great tips, thanks 👍.
Can you tell me about the Fender/ Floyd Rose that came on the Deluxe Plus Strats. I've had mine since 96 and never intonated it. I have a Hipshot Tremsetter on it since I got.
excellent video i've never had a problem with any OFR german made floyds but this always happens with the cheaper korean ones aka the floyd specials
Helpful video, thank you. I've been having issues with my floyd rose set up for years and you just solved 3 of them.
Thank you so much. I was lost and you have helped me tremendously. Gained another sub:)
Thank you again and have a nice day
Great advice little things we can't always see and may not know unless shown.
I had the exact problem which was the first one. The string retainer was too high....amazing! Thanks a bunch!
You should try different posts, when they start to wear the posts don't let the bridge return because it gets stuck
lNCREASE THE SPRlNG TENSl0N
Check the knife edges on your bridge pivot points , they have to be in good condition. Tip, never adjust bridge height with your strings under tension as this will damage the knife edges . Also check your pivot posts for wear while your at it.
Thank you, I had the buzz at the nut on my floyd for ages and I was convinced it was coming from the bridge, thanks to you it's solved!
Ooo crap on a stick , what plate are you referring too cause i just changed string gauge or actually string brands and some of the strings are a little of a heavier gauge but it’s enough to where im going to have to intonate and play with the truss rod a bit ,but i dont need to be breaking more than im fixing any info would be greatly appreciated as im very new to a flouting bridge, 🙏 thank you
By far one of the best videos I've seen in regards to FR
Thanks! I returned my FR equipped guitar but interesting to see how people cope with them. Best Regards!
Thank you for pointing that out, I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that.
Great video and very useful pearls of wisdom on a Floyd!! Do you have any remedy for a string continually slipping out of the saddle on a Floyd rose?
2:45
What could you do to create an angle if you don't have a retainer?
I've purchased a Floyd Rose guitar recently and even though I haven't ran into any problems so far, I enjoyed a lot this video so I'll be able to recall any of these issues if they ever happen to me and be able to solve them. Thanks!
Great video, it touched on a couple of problems I'm having. But I'm also getting terrible buzzing from the saddle when the string is fretted around the 9th fret. This is on the D string. Any ideas?
I don't have any of these problems, but this is fascinating insight for if I ever encounter these issues.
@@DomicidalCovers awesome! Glad I could help
Curious as to why your #2 (A string) saddle is in the #1 (E string) position?
I would also like to know why that is, and that it is the correct order because I have a TRS-101 with numbering 1-2-3 and again 1-2-3!?
It's good to see Toki stayin' busy post Dethklok.
I have a problem that noone seems to mention. Whenever I tune a string, Bridge bands a little bit, and all strings go flat.
Can someone please help me, I've got no Idea how to meke the Bridge not move
First tune the 6th string, then the 1st, then the 5th, then the 2nd... you get my point
I heard from a video that you should tune like this: 3,4,2,5,1,6
Ray you head over here from Doug Marks too?
Did you ever change the block to a brass one if you did, did that make a real difference in sustain?
Hi, thank you so much for your video it has helped me a lot. I have a question regarding the first problem and sharp/flat notes when locking the nut. My guitar (Kramer Assault 220) doesn't have a string retainer or the two nuts behind the neck, so how can I make the necessary changes?
Very helpful clip. I've used Floyds for many years, but I still learned a couple of helpful tips.
Very cool! I’m going to be buying a guitar with a Floyd rose bridge soon , so this helps me understand a little bit about in advance
Thanks man! This is great stuff for me! Got to reassemble a old with a FR and I am shure those 5 are no problem anymore.
Hi, I had an issue with my guitar and on a few words, I took off all the Floyd, and now I'm having trouble for putting it again...
hello my lucking nut is worn a little bit is this cause string snaps
4:52 would be example
@@larsheuker thank you and will do 🤘🏻
One my strings (3rd "G string") pops out of the saddle just b4 "In Tune". What causes this? It's a new guitar.
Bruh we need answers i have a very simalair problem
Hmm, I wonder what do you think of the Ibanez Original EDGE compared to this one OFR?
One of the most useful and educational floyd videos i have seen so far. Thanks for this!
Great tips!! I thought i had a pretty good handle on the set ups...learn something new right here. Thanks!
I had to login just to thank you and give the thumbs up
👍👍👍👍👍
I've heard (and watched) many explanations & videos about how to fix that sitar sound on 1st string,
but either its not Floyd Nut,
not said clear enough,
not shown good enough,
explained good enough
or just advised tighten the string tree.
But your video was perfect 👌
Thank You 🤜🤛
I had to pull first 0.10 pretty aggressively outta fretboard and keep the tension up while locking the nut and vóila,
NO WHEREVER I MAY ROAM anymore.
Edit//
Subscribed too 👌
Thank you, thank you and thank you once again.
Dude. Complete game changer! Thanks so much I was really giving up on my floyd it was more tuning than playing
Great video thanks 🙏😍
Awesome video. I'm doing my first full setup by myself tomorrow and I'm of course expecting trouble, this is gonna be useful. Thanks.
