For me, the big plus to my workflow is that the BM app automatically generates a proxy file along with the video file that I write to the external SSD. I then use the same SSD for Davinci Resolve and the proxy is linked - several steps have been saved. For my casual out and about, I carry a micro thumb drive for external storage when I see a shot I want. This App is only going to get better knowing Blackmagic. Love their products and since it is Free - life is good,
My 15 Pro Max will be here tomorrow. I’ll try it with this. At this point in time, I won’t be bothering with my 14 Pro Max with it. The changes in the cameras, SoC and software is so great this year, with log and luts, as well as the work done by the new hardware compressors for ProRez, to make comparisons with the older camera to be useful, other than for the 14 Pro Max results to be disappointing in comparison. Older third party luts, such as those in Filmic use the Apple sharpening which can’t be eliminated. Apple’s new log doesn’t include all of the computer work, including sharpening. Everything I’ve seen so far has it looking much better.
I’m going to be testing the iPhone 15 pro max. While I don’t expect to much difference in image quality I’m curious of the usbc port and the different storage options to record to. Also I want to see using iCloud for file transfer, if you didn’t want to subscribe to blackmagic.
@@BackNTheBoxI have noticed that the Blackmagic camera app is not as good as the native iPhone camera app in Low Light, do you find this as well, I always record at 60fps and use a iPhone XS.
Excellent review showing the different camera apps. I have used the filmic pro legacy and the cinema P3. black magic appears much better to use, and I used DaVinci for my editing
I too really like the BM app. One thing however that they need to address is the fact that you can't actually see the focus peaking when the app is in record mode, which makes it useless for pull focus shots...
I agree that you should be able to view while recording. I use the focus peaking to get my position A and position B numbers to do the pull. While this works with planned shots, live unscripted action shots do not. I would also like to see the option to increase the data rate of the record format for h.265.
*And here's another app from moment In the application, he writes in Bit Depth 8 how to make him write in 10 Bit? There is HEVC in the settings. Thanks!!!*
I am using 15 pro max + this app, when I am shooting Apple Log in 4k 60fps, I always get the frame drop alert (all Apple Log Codec alert the frame drop, but H.264/265 won't), and it will stop recording after a minute or longer, and I found out the when shooting with 120mm, it will alert from the very beginning but the main 24mm lens won't(sometimes). Is something happening the same with your iPhone 15 Pro? I have tested the record to an external hard drive ( Samsung T7 2TB), and shooting with a 120mm lens is still showing the alert, is it only my iPhone? I am not sure if it's a hardware(120 mm lens) issue? or a software issue?
@@melgross Thanks for the test! I have found out! it's the shutter speed, I set it up too high like 1/4000 in 60 fps, and then it will alert, but not sure why the 120mm will get the alert from the very beginning, but the main 24mm lens is mostly fine with the same shutter speed.
Recording in prores4444 and bringing that file into resolve, states that it is 12bit. Blackmagic in their description says only 10bit. So it might be a 10bit video wrapped in a 12bit format container.
There is nothing in the settings to support them. You can disable stabilization, which you want to do so the camera stabilization doesn’t fight the gimbal. As far as controls on the gimbal I don’t have the Zhiyun to try. I see an “allow Bluetooth” in the settings. The app is free so give it a try and let us know. Thanks for watching.
Great question. Unfortunately I don’t have an iPhone 15 Pro to check. I would think it would act like a iPad that had an usbc port. And the hub on it acts like it should giving access to all connected devices.
Just downloaded the black magic camera app. It’s amazing that such a powerful tool is free to use.

Amazing
Thank you for an in-depth review. This camera app was unknown to me. I’ve been using Legacy for a while.
I’ll definitely give this a try.
Glad it was helpful!
Very nice video and a lot of work putting this together. Thanks
Wow great review. Subscribed. I found the Filmic Pro to be more pleasing to my eye. Why is this?
i'ts subjective, I don't think it's looks more pleasing but just me though. It's just may lenses on our eye are different 🤷🏾♂
could you do a review on anamorphic modes ?

Great review, for their first version, BM Camera is just amazing. It also has the cloud features!

Awesome review, thanks for your knowledge and time spent.

I will try this app

I haven’t seen anyone report this anywhere.perhaps your phone is defective.

Hello, cool review! Will the Blackmagic Camera App shoot in 12 bit?
Recording in prores4444 and bringing that file into resolve, states that it is 12bit. Blackmagic in their description says only 10bit. So it might be a 10bit video wrapped in a 12bit format container.
I have an indication that the video is 12 bits and the colors are spinning perfectly@@BackNTheBox
Does the Blackmagic App work with Gimbals, like the Zhiyun Smooth 5?
There is nothing in the settings to support them. You can disable stabilization, which you want to do so the camera stabilization doesn’t fight the gimbal. As far as controls on the gimbal I don’t have the Zhiyun to try. I see an “allow Bluetooth” in the settings. The app is free so give it a try and let us know. Thanks for watching.
Are you able to use a USB-C Hub attached to the iPhone 15 Pro/Max with external storage and microphone attached with the Blackmagic Camera app?
Great question. Unfortunately I don’t have an iPhone 15 Pro to check. I would think it would act like a iPad that had an usbc port. And the hub on it acts like it should giving access to all connected devices.
Yes, with the 15 Pro.
You can also record 4k 60 ProRes log on the internal storage with the BM app currently in case you don’t have an external drive handy.
@@ejb8326 true. But make sure you buy the phone with plenty of storage.
Be careful I was around there a few months ago and some guy in a yellow shirt was fighting some kind of lizard monster.
Can the BM app shoot log videos?
The Blackmagic app color space options are Rec709, Rec2020, P3 D65. There is no log record setting.
You can shoot in Apple log on the 15 pro.
Молодец! 🎉
I will fix that 69 subscriber mark to 70
Thanks for the Android app 😂😂😂
