mini-Arcades; DIY MODs for Switch and iPad
How to modify the iCade tabletop arcade cabinets to work with the iPad, Switch, Raspberry Pi, and other gaming hardware.
While an iPad 2 LCD was used in the video, an iPad 3 or iPad 4 9.7inch lcd screen will work as-long as it has the proper driver board. Since the connections of the driver board can’t be used with the metal case cutouts anyway (due to the tight fit in cabinet) any appropriate driver board for the lcd screen should be good.

when ppl call it 8bitdu (like doing something) instead of 8bitdoh (like nintendo) 😩
I'm most likely gonna follow suit and put my portal back in the box as well. Buy the Razer Kishi ultra and use my iPad Mini to stream. Thanks for your help.
Very informative video. Thank you.
This man went ahead and recreated the problem the designers of the controller had. There is a reason the right stick is smaller🤦🏽…….
I see how you could cause an issue with the wrong height of stick. I talk about that in the video. Because of this change the RetroFlag is still the most comfortable controller grip I use. I do play more first person games than other games. If your right thumb doesn’t have to use the right stick as much for your playing then I won’t change the controller. Thank you for the comment and for watching.
I'm between the lite 2 and Sn30pro for iPad gaming. Mainly Minecraft, and maybe some FPS and racing games. I'll probably keep it in my backpack. A perfect balance between size and comfort is what I'm looking for. Any thoughts on which to go with?
I found the lite 2 really lacking in the sticks, and if you play racing games you should get a controller with analog sticks for acceleration. The sticks on the lite 2 just felt weak, and would not last being slide into and out of my backpack. So I would go with the sn30pro. The controller I really liked and have yet to finish the review video is the CRKD NeoS controller. For a retro style controller it was very comfortable and the buttons and sticks were some of the best I've played on. Thanks for the question and comment.
@ I'll check that one out! Similar in size to the others?
The NeoS is slightly larger than the Sn30pro. The lite 2 is very thin so the NeoS would seem like double the size of the lite 2.
I’ve only heard of this controller/grip recently. I was looking at their 1st version, but this is far better
I enjoy it for traveling. Nice to have the hdmi out just there in case it’s needed. Also there is a newer version out with hall sticks and triggers. Both usb ports are now usbc. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Mine has stopped charging or being recognised by the switch, any advise on repair?
No real advice on how to repair but sounds like the usb connection might be the issue. If you did open the controller it’s possible the ribbon cable that feeds the usbc connector was damage. There are sales on AliExpress and the controller was only around $35.
@@BackNTheBox Thank you for the advise, since bought a new Hori Compact, great Dpad, lighter and works very well. I previously got my retroflag via Aliexpress... after this issue, I am very intimidated by the prospect of getting China-made or imported accessories given how low their lifespan is. Even I thought it may have been the type c USB slot that may have been damaged, since I can't even charge the Switch unit when connected. Might open it up in my spare time I guess. Again, thank you for the advise, much appreciated.
The hori split compacts are my favorite joycon style controllers. I don’t miss the rumble and find the sticks and buttons including the dpad to be great.
@@BackNTheBox I got that too, dpad was perfect, lighter than this unit... is now my default control device for the Switch. Thanks for the tip though. I might look to dismantle the retro controller for reuse somewhere else...
why other reviewer said this had hall effect?
There is now a newer version the TNS-3161 Eggshell controller 3 that has hall sticks and triggers. Thanks for the question and watching.
The ones circulating on Tiktok are disgustingly high. They're trying to sell them for $139.95 and higher
Wow that’s crazy. Even if it was marked up to $50 I would buy another better handheld. At near $140 is just unthinkable especially with what you could get at that price.
You can use a stand too put on the tablet or the controller to put it on a table
Your voice is soothing as you explain tech oh man.
is this compatible on switch v1?? thnx for the answer
It works for both by switch v1 and switch oled. Though it’s a tighter fit for the oled and that makes it feel more secure. The v1 can move a little (rock back and forth when pushed). Thanks for the question and watching.
@@BackNTheBox thank you very much for the answer bro. keep safe always
is your switch is version 1 or version 2?
I just purchased this D9 (ps5 portal clone)and i ALSO have the Ps5 Portal which i use for home
I love the rail on the second iCade, what a wonderful idea. And as you said, you get the rumble too. What iPad size did you used for this one? the 12inch one? When you plug the switch, are you able to rotate the video signal or it's done within the switch by selecting Tate mode for games that provide this option?
The iPad used is a pro 12.9 and the rotation is controlled through the video capture software and switch setup. The on I used is Genki Studio and you can use other capture devices besides theirs with the software. Make sure it’s an usb3 capture dongle as it has a lot less lag. Thanks for the question and comment.
@@BackNTheBox any iPad pro 12.9 will work or I need to look for specific years?
While I show an iPad 12.9” smaller sizes work too. The important aspect of the iPad is that it has an usb-c port. In the video I used an iPad 9.7” screen inside the metal housing so that gives you an idea on the size and fit for a 9.7” iPad.
This gave me so many ideas for a small arcade setup.
You can get it for $24 on AE right now and, I mean, that's a pretty darn good price.
R36s is dope I love mine
Glad you’re enjoying it. I find it to be a great system especially for the price. I like playing twin shooter games with the sticks. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
So the measurements are... 6.411 by 3.229 inches. Perfect. I have calipers somewhere but this will make it easier. Maybe 163mm by 82mm if I have my fancy ruler handy.
Am i able to play playstation 5 games through this device?
Using remote play on your phone or tablet with the controller attached allows you to stream ps5. Thanks for the question and watching.
Nice catch. I have one coming from today's sale on them, and am worried about my LE Mario OLED Switch getting the scuffmarks.
Thanks for the comment and watching. The sales were really good. Thought about the plus but decided to try out their NEO S controller. Video to come.
My zero 2 has a usb c port???
I just wish the SE didn't have extra sensitive buttons and sticks. While I respect the reason they made them this way, it's a shame that there is no other controller where the shoulder and stick buttons are face buttons. It'd be even better if they were placed on the back in my opinion.
If you don't like gaming on a single joycon because this is cramped - I think this is even smaller than a joycon lol I like the idea though; maybe it's fine for shorter retro game sessions.
Does it come with pre installed games or do i need to figure out how to install games?
The one I purchased came with games. But be sure to check the listing. Thanks for the comment and watching.
this is a misleading title... you aren't fixing anything friendo
Sorry if doesn’t help for you. It does for me fix the main issue as to why I didn’t use it. The other same type grips I have, have soft material on the back. This is so it protects the back of your switch, especially if you have a design on the back.
Yes, I swapped out both sticks, I had to buy 3 controllers as I broke the 1st two, but you learn as you go along.
They're smaller than I thought. :)
Does it work with remote play ps5 games and android?
It has pairing options for android. Unfortunately I don’t have access to an android device at the moment to check.
fantastic. Thank you for this review.
Glad it was helpful, and thanks for watching.
INPUT LAG on this is so terrible on the Android.
I feel like this is dependent on your phone having Bluetooth 5.0 or greater. If your phone/device has older Bluetooth, you're gonna have input lag regardless of what controller you have.
Can this fit a 12.4" display tab?
It barely fits my iPad Pro 12.9”. So that’s about the limit of size of tablet it will fit.
I think the thumbstick is small for you, but for other people it isnt😂
Does it have a wake up function?
No the controller buttons will not wake the switch, but since the controller is not Bluetooth and the switch is connected to it the Switch’s power button is accessible. Though I would also like to just click any button to wake. It does mean the controller shouldn’t be pulling any power while in sleep mode.
@@BackNTheBox is worth it to buy?
I love mine
Pound for pound still the best handheld I got👍
i actually picked lite 2 because of the analogs. i wanted small and compact controller to use with my pc and smartphone, and analogs were must have for ps2 and psp emulation. I use it with my switch too, but i usually play splatoon 3 and bigger pro controller helps me with aiming. for analogs resistance, i'm keeping it in bag full of university and girl stuff for almost one year and they're still working perfectly fine. if someone's searching for ultra light and very small controller with analogs, i highly recommend it, but lite 1 would work better if you're planning to play some retro or retro style games, like snes games, sonic mania, celeste or stardew valley
Thank you for thoughts and comments. Glad to hear that they are holding up and that speaks to their durability.
I didn't activate that kiosk mode!! I'll have to do that, cause handing it over to my 4yo daughter and keeping one eyeball on that screen is not fun lol
The reason i didn't buy it is because the bluetooth earphones .Its total nonsense.
When asking this price for a limited use device, you shouldn’t be giving the customer a reason not to buy. Especially for a very common feature.
Great review. I'll guess I take the micro
Great review. I'll guess I take the micro
I've had bad experience with plastic that has a false rubber coating. Looks great when new but after a couple of years they go sticky and you can't clean them off.
For only $25, it's not half bad.
Definitely for the price it makes a little more sense. I’d look at it as power bank with the bonus functionality of a Bluetooth controller. Thanks for watching.
I'd rather have a powerbank that has an emulation handheld built in. There are several of those, but they all have awful reviews. This looks slightly better, but I don't need another controller.
I agree. I have too many controllers and power banks already. The one thing with this is that you are pretty much guaranteed to have a charge on the controller when you need to use it. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Great channel name and interesting product to look at thanks.
Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Nice concept for a device. A little niche, but I could see where this might be a useful addition to my tech bag. If it only had QI wireless built in.
Yeah wireless charging would be nice. It does have a nice flat back and the plastic rubbery coating would work for that too. Thanks for comment and watching.

No mention of dreamcast or psp performance?
There were examples of Dreamcast and PSP games. Not all games from those systems are going to play 100%. I found Dreamcast playable and some PSP games. Included in the video was Soul Calibur for PSP and I found that to be playable for me running between 50 and 60fps. The new RG35xx line of the Plus, H, SP play these systems better but are about $20 more and only the 35xxh has analog sticks. The main thing with the R36S is that it performs well above its price point. Thanks for question and watching.
@@BackNTheBox thanks for the detailed reply great video btw
I added a chapter marker for the performance section as your question showed me that I had not called out that part. Glad you enjoyed the video.
This popped up in recommendation and I'm not disappointed.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
really good video
