The BMC app has changed my entire workflow. Having the capability to automatically generate the proxy files and write them to the SSD or at times a thumb drive makes my timeline streamlined. I can take the SSD and go directly to Davinci Resolve. I have multiple cameras and I can easily do Multicam using the BMC app. The hardware support with Tentacle syncs my Sound Devices Mix Pre to the frame level and there is also one other hardware option that really is a good one is Nucleus M - This has been an easy transition from my studio work using BM cameras to field work using the app and my new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. In addition when I need a Multicam shoot, I can bring in my iPhone 13 mini and the app also runs on my iPad Pro. So a lightweight capability that is really is game changing for me. Free is the Wow! Subscriptions are the Devil's work.
@@NetvoTV I started out with a number of video cameras and still have two BMPCC OGs, BMCC, BMMCC, and a BMPCC 4K. So the real question is how much do you really want to lug around? BTW it is easy to do Multicam with the BMC app and sync with my MixPre 6 audio recorder when needed using a tentacle
Awesome video. Filmic Pro seems to still have more features so far... but I stopped using it the minute they introduced subscriptions. For me, the Black Magic app is the way to go especially in the light that eventually, i want a Black magic camera.
I jumped ship when filmic pro made you pay, I chose another paid for app for @£12 ish, but it didn't have image stabilization so it's nice to see that black magic has, and is on the app store as I use the stereo capabilities and mic gain control for my binaural mics.
BMC supports tilta nucleus m and nano for remote focus pulling...that is a nice bit of hardware support. The camera app is 100% free, BM Cloud costs money (even if you never use the app, its a standalone product)...and the camera has an integration if you are a BM cloud subscriber.
Filmic lost me as a user when they went to the subscription model. A one time per year, *reasonable* maintenance fee for updates / upgrades, great. But their pricing model is, per Tropic Thunder - *FULL RETARDANT* and warning was, never go full retard. As for the Black Magic Cloud; I have need for that; so I’ll not be getting sucked into that. I use DaVinci Resolve, and will be upgrading to the Studio version. So, they will get some money from me for the applications that I use. I think they deserve it for the quality their products are.
Hello Simon! Excellent content! I am a newbie to mobile film-making & photography. Have been tinkering with the BM app to practice shooting vidoes in manual (15 pro max) & will continue to do so. I am looking for a one stop app for manual photography as well something that gives me manual control & a beginner friendly interface (no Ai & all the that). I see you mention the Moment Pro app. Would that be sufficient or could you please suggest a few more names? Thank you!
@@HorrocksoniPhone Thankyou very much for your reply! Would also be looking into your Patreon soon ! I've been researching camera apps lately. I've installed the Black Magic Camera app because everyone says it's good, but it doesn't seem to autofocus when taking close-ups. I think I'm more comfortable with the original camera app for taking videos, but am I doing something wrong?

The BMC does not have a function that Filmic does have, which is the ability to push the BitRate limit in Filmic Pro for h264/65. It can record up to 100mbps, whereas in BLC it's limited to only 50mbps without the possibility of changing this
Hello! thank you for the video! I’ve already asked this question in your previous video😅 And a few people was wondering about that as well😊 Could you answer please : I have a regular iPhone 13, so it can’t record in a prores quality, but when I tested this new Blackmagic camera app, I’ve tried to record in Apple ProRes codec (4444) and in a standard photo gallery video file was marked as «prores» All I know is that prores is used to make better colour grade when edit video So my questions are: 1). Is it «real» ProRes? 2). It it worth shoot in this codec with my phone at all? 3). If yes - which option of these ProRes codecs should I choose ?😅 Thank you in advance!🙏
I can't answer your question about how real the prores is, but Blackmagic have a forum so you could ask the apps devs: forum.blackmagicdesign.com/ A dev actually mentions prores codecs and why they discontinued 4x4 in this thread: forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=189901&fbclid=IwAR3JDzduPQVumI9t2jFVsE2G0vCM-raC7s661Y5X0akBX6jLWHXskM7K41A Thing is, if you're unsure whether you should record in prores or not and at which level, then the answer is no - because you need to understand grading at a certain level to exploit the use of it. If you like spending hours tweaking settings in DaVinci Resolve, then ProRes might be for you. Otherwise, its a waste of time
I bought Filmic Pro a bunch of years ago but I ditched Filmic when they went to subscription model since I HATE apps that have subscription. So I think Filmic shot themself in the foot.
How did you get stabilization to look so smooth. I’ve tried everything on the app but no matter which settings I choose, standard, cinematic, extreme, the footage is still super shaky.

Hi 👋 Simon. I just joined your Patreon.
I look forward to learning about smartphone film production.

keep in mind that prores files can be huge and the lightning connector is slow.

Very good insight into the app. You have the option of connecting a Tentacle Track e as external audio with timecode...

do you have an older device? older devices do not have this extra level of stabilisation
Apple log with h265 seems like the most sense - ProRes takes up too much memory
Tested on iPhone 12 and 13 pro
I've found it usually doesn't start working until you start recording. Maybe a bug that needs fixing
