A subscription model for for phone cameras was always going to be a stretch at current phone technologies. Filmic pro may need to go the freemium model route, with the paid version providing some very compelling value additions. In the meantime congratulations Grant Chetty and team over at Blackmagic design, their philosophy of democratizing creativity soldiers on, and we all are benefitting from it.
I flushed Adobe for the same reason and now have a universal license for Affinity Suite that runs on all my devices including the Mac and iPad. I love what Blackmagic has done.
Even if they went back to just a paid version that allows complete ownership as opposed to paying ransom every month or year, they would still be better off. But it's too late for that. There's a free version out now, that gives not just ownership but is actually free, and is every bit as good and only going to get better.
I use DaVinci Resolve and film with my iPhone. The cloud option, where you can upload video clips as you are filming is a game changer and time saver. I hope that Blackmagic will be adding features gradually.
Hey Zdenka, Yep - another great video with a great pace (maybe a little fast on this one as you had an enormous amount of material to cover) So well scripted, filmed, and edited. I downloaded the Blackmagic camera app and followed along with you during your presentation. I have had Filmic for years but will now switch as I find the Blackmagic user interface so much easier for me. It's nice to have choices. Today I received my Hohem M6 gimble and have retired my other two(based on your earlier review) received my new iPhone 15 Pro Max yesterday and need to stop watching your great review while I am still solvent. With all this new gear and software I will be busy learning the intricacies for a good while. Thanks for your hard work. I should mention that I also love your accent and could listen to you read cookbooks.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Some people are pointing out that 15 promax is not fully working with Hoham yet. So if you find it as well, just give them a few weeks they need to catch up as that phone just came out. I’m quite sure they will bring new firmware updates very soon. Enjoy your new gear and thank you so much again for your support
Great review, thanks! It doesn’t do everything, but it does seem to be a great tool for some cases. The killer feature for those quick “grab shots“ on the go to me is that you can lock it to horizontal mode video. Accidental vertical video in a horizontal production seems to happen often enough to be a problem.
Even for a V.1 it's impressive. I wish there were separate reticles for focus and exposure. The ability to save presets would be nice too along with gimbal compatibility. I do love the BM Cloud link. My workflow is to shoot while traveling (Vlog Motocamping in Vietnam), make selects at night, then auto push to BM cloud while I sleep. Then when I get home, the footage is already safely backed up and in a DaVinci Resolve project I set up prior to leaving and ready to edit. This is my primary app now. FilmicPro has been deleted to force me to get nimble with. all features and settings.
When recording something and switching cameras during the recording on my iPhone 13 Pro, I've noticed that the Front camera footage is right-side up but the rear camera footage is upside down. But, it appears right-side up in the app while filming. 🤷🏻
This looks great. The only feature missing for me is the ability to use your iPad as a controller and second screen, like Filmic Remote. If they can release an app that does that, then I’ll be switching over from Filmic Legacy. Thanks for a great video!

Just downloaded the app as a result of this video I wouldn’t probably ever film for real with my iPhone but definitely makes it a lot better to use. Thank you.
Simple question can you take a still photo with the black magic camera app for iphone mine only does video if i cant take a photo with it its usless to me
Hi there....I want to use this black magic app with my iphone 15 pro max for the times when I can't use my Sony FX30...I like that I can record Pro Res LT to my Samsung SSD...question...if I wanted to use a gimbal like the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 or the Insta 360 Flow...can I use this app? those gimbals have their own apps...I'm not too familiar with gimbals for smartphones...thanks so much
You would be using gimbal to stabilize your footage with app like this. So you can use pretty much any gimbal. You would use gimbal app only if you want other things like motion, time, lapse, or tracking… I highly suggest looking into Hoham isteady m6 this one would allow you to do in this app, motion, time lapse, and also tracking
@@ZdenkaDarula thank you so much...the SSD is 60grms which added to the 15 pro max weight 221grms is over the Osmo mobile 6...almost at the limit of the Insta 360 flow too...hmm..maybe I can use a fast USB -C thumb drive instead...I will look into the Hoham for sure...I just like the compact (and cute?) factor of the Osmo mobile 6 and the flow...thanks so much. If not I will just use the phone on a mini tripod...
The ability to shoot Landscape while phone is mounted vertically is kind of cool. Also the option of enabling regular Vertical mode for tiktok clips. I hope they continue to work on the app and add new features like that DoubleTake. I don't like that FilmicPro is subscription.
I had already downloaded this app. Was really surprised when I saw it. Haven’t played with it yet. Your review is very helpful. I have the Legacy version of Filmic Pro on my Samsung Note 10+, and was getting ready to buy it on my new IPhone 14 when Filmic went to their subscription model. Just too expensive for me on a yearly basis. For my personal use I can’t justify the price. Excited about Blackmagic’s app. As you said, I can bet they will be adding features to it.
Yes, if you’re using it for personal purposes, then the pricing is definitely high. I do this for living and I only purchased it because it was on sale. Hopefully this app will add more features
Zdenka, Your comparison just showed up in my RUclips suggestions about an hour ago, and before I finished watching, I made my decision: I immediately *cancelled* my FilmicPro subscription, and downloaded the Blackmagic Camera app. Then I finished your review 😊 The few features are going to be missed (like Filmic Remote!), but what BMC *has* will definitely keep me happy! Thank you for letting me know, Zdenka!
Not being able to save preset settings sucks. What happens when you have a little studio at home? You gona have to keep up changing the settings to what you want
Do you need to set the setting in native 15 pro max like exposure and iso or do black magic does have have their own setting parameter and won’t affect by camera native setting?
Native camera app, and Blackmagic Cam app are two completely different applications. They don’t work together. so whatever you set up in one is not going to fact the other one at all.. they are completely separate.
You mean what phone case? I switch them all the time, so don’t look at my phone cover…. I am testing different lenses from different companies so I have to switch many times phone case…
I think you are the person who has explained this application best so far and you explained it wonderfully, thank you very much. 🥳👍 But there's something I'm curious about: What are the differences between the shooting quality of the Apple stock camera and the "Blackmagic" application? I hope you will prepare such content in the future.
Thank you for your job! Very useful and detailed tutorials! Could you make it clear what is the difference between FilmicPro plans? I would like to buy finally annual subscription, but stiil can't decide on plan. There are like Creator plan, Director plan and the most cheapest plan. What is the difference besides the price? Thanks in advance!

Filmic Remote is a useful companion app that lets you control the camera from another iPhone or iPad. That has been very useful for me. Hope Black Magic implements similar remote control.
Thank you so much for this. I'm pretty impressed with the BM app! A quick scan through the comments and I'm not seeing something that needs to be said and that is... you are absolutely beautiful.
I’ve been trying this app and love it so much more than filmic. One thing I noticed is that the aspect ratio guides are not saved after filming, so the video is stuck at 16:9. Is there a way to have the aspect rations applied to the video while filming that perhaps I’ve overseen and not noticed?
Great Review. I learned from you that you need an external mic in order to control the audio level. And don't forget to enable "headset mic". I did not notice that yet. That's why audio control was a disappointment for me so far. Still I'd like a limiter for my iphone mic.
Hi. I just received an iPhone 15 Pro Max and what I enjoy the most is being able to just plug my DJI maic receiver directly into the USB C on the iPhone and just start filming - no messing with cables etc. I plugged in the mic receiver and opened Blackmagic Settings and the mic appeared - selected in and could adjust the gain. Yeah, that's an expensive solution but works great.
Thank you for that great overview. I have both apps, but right now I am using Black Magic because Filmic Pro does not allow for external recording to an SD drive (necessary for some ProRes 4k) Black Magic app allows you to record externally. Filmic pro better get on board with allowing ProRes external recording ASAP. Also, the addition of a waveform monitor would be super helpful instead of just a histogram.
I absolutely agree with the need for ssd external drive capability. So if black magic allows that I’m gonna get the app I just wish they made it for an ipad. And I hope saving presets comes ASAP!
@@ZdenkaDarula that’s great. I look forward to the next video because you really know how to explain things in a way that people can really understand.
You information delivery is always so clear, detailed and organized. Very thought out. I was hoping you would do a video on the black magic app. Thanks and love your channel.
Hi Zdenka, I noticed that in previous versions of BM app the codec Apple ProRes 4444 was present but in the new updates it disappeared , did it happen to you as well?
You might want to look into the Rode Wireless Pro mics. You get two transmitters and one receiver, and the receiver can send audio from each mic to left and right inputs of the iPhone.
@@RonCoy hi Ron. So I have a few Saramonic mics that work the same but for some reason the app just won’t record stereo. Have you been able to get those rose mics recording stereo with the Blackmagic app? I’m hoping I just have a setting wrong.
Great vid. My question is I have 2 iPhones, a 15 pro max and an 11. Installed Blackmagic cam on the 15 and Bluetooth + on the 11. The idea is to use the 11 as a monitor when recording myself with the best camera on the 15 when I can’t see the screen. Can’t seem to get Bluetooth + to detect iPhone 15 with Blackmagic cam. Did I miss something? Is this possible? This would be a killer feature to add. Thanks in advance
To be honest, I haven’t tested it, so I can’t answer this. Hopefully somebody will see this comment and will answer. I’m adding it to the list to test though.
Interesting video, thanks. I have just installed this on my phone to give it a go and use a Zhiyun Smooth gimbal. I was curious though about the pointer you use in this. Seems useful so could you give the info on it.
For me it makes jittering on Hohem M6 (the stabilisation is off) using Iphone 12 max pro, other apps do perform flawlessly, I might have missed some option to tick but that's how it is.
What phone did you use to record this video? I'm about to buy one iPhone 12 PRO and I want to use Applr PRO RES mode, whereas it isn't supported to record on that mode natively.
Hi there, I was wondering if you could help me out What it is I’ve just bought the new iPhone 11 Pro Max And when I’m recording, it seems to be jumping Whilst recording my video I’m not too sure if it’s got something to do with the settings or if you could advise me if you’ve had this experience before I wasn’t too sure if it was a bug in the actual app Well, I have a project upcoming very soon and would need to get this problem sorted so if you’ve got any advice that would help me out massively Recently just watched one of your new videos also I noticed that You purchased the new M7 Would you recommend that over the M6 Gimble? Which one would you say is perform better in your opinion Was just wondering, does it still do the barrel roll feature? Also many thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you for your comment. I’m very sorry you’re having this issue. Unfortunately, I have never tried that phone so I’m afraid I can’t really help. If you feel it is jumpy and you’re filming an automatic mode it might be because the frame rate is irregular. Try filming in manual mode instead.
I purchased Filmic Pro a while ago (before subscription) and still like the app but will only use the Legacy version. I don’t use it enough to justify paying a subscription fee. I did install the Blackmagic Camera app and also use Davinci Resolve for editing but don’t plan on using Bm cloud. I also agree that it’s highly BM will be adding features in the future as users provide feedback…
I've been researching camera apps lately. I've installed the Black Magic Camera app because everyone says it's good, but it doesn't seem to autofocus when taking close-ups. I think I'm more comfortable with the original camera app for taking videos, but am I doing something wrong?
Filmic Pro jsem opustil po tom co se mi z placené apky stala apka s předplatným. Drobátko podraz na lidi. Takže jsem rád za free Blackmagic. Děláš Zdenko super vyčerpávající videa. :)
Just installed the app and I have the option to select Rec.2020 - HDR for color space so you can shoot in HDR using the app from what I can tell so far
I lost faith with Filmic Pro when they changed the pricing structure so I have been hunting for an alternative and the Blackmagic Camera app may be it especially as I as also moving from Lumafusion to Davinci Resolve. Would it be easier to colour edit Blackmagic footage in Davinci Resolve with colour managemnet?
I think it would be easier to colour the files or worked with the files in DaVinci resolve … it is made by the same company, so I’m assuming they did some integration there
Many thanks for this. I have been using FilmicPro for a while but this Black Magic app looks very interesting - especially as my preferred editing solution is their DaVinci Resolve 18.6 on my MAC.
I don't like a subscription model, and as I am not using filming apps professionally (just casual use and experimentation for learning), I am sticking to the Legacy version of Filmic (for which I paid the full price purchasing it some time ago). Unfortunately I cannot try this BlackMagic app (I do use Davinci Resolve sometimes) as I am on Android right now, but I appreciate your videos as they are really informative and in the sweet spot for both professionals and amateurs like me. Thanks!
I stuck with the legacy app as well, since I had purchased it before. I don't see the point for a subscription since even the native camera for android (especially Samsung ) has improved a lot.
Filmic Pro Remote control is the main feature I use that Blackmagic doesn't have. As I need to record myself, I use an iPad as a monitor and remote control. It saves A LOT of time to be able to control everything and see myself in a big screen. Also, there is no option in Blackmagic to choose from Global Tone Mapping or Local Tone Mapping. It is (I guess) by default at local tone mapping (which is what the native camera app uses). I prefer to use global tone mapping as it gives a look closer to what I want most part of the times, not overprocessing darker or brighter areas.
Filmic Pro really killed themselves when they went subscription. An app like this for free is close to a nail in the coffin for them.
Yes, I think that they are not going to be happy that this app is now available
Yep! Stopped using them after that. Blackmagic is gonna eat their lunch now with a free much easier to use product
It’s missing remote control though. With Filmic you can view and control the iPhone from an iPad or another iPhone.

Yes, it is only a guide as someone else said it’s not applied… you have to change the aspect ratio in the post
Great Review. I learned from you that you need an external mic in order to control the audio level. And don't forget to enable "headset mic". I did not notice that yet. That's why audio control was a disappointment for me so far. Still I'd like a limiter for my iphone mic.
Thank you so much for sharing. Enjoy the new app.
I hear you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I absolutely agree with the need for ssd external drive capability. So if black magic allows that I’m gonna get the app I just wish they made it for an ipad. And I hope saving presets comes ASAP!
@@rowbyrowbythey do allow that.
Is there any Android version underway for anytime soon?
I unfortunately don’t know
Thank you Zdenka for making this video, I really like the new app even better than the Filmic Pro and it’s made a difference. You’re terrific.
Glad it was helpful! Next week I’ll be posting in depth tutorial on this app… 👍
@@ZdenkaDarula that’s great. I look forward to the next video because you really know how to explain things in a way that people can really understand.
your video is very informative and you did explained all feature so easily and very clear. 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for your support
You information delivery is always so clear, detailed and organized. Very thought out. I was hoping you would do a video on the black magic app. Thanks and love your channel.
You are very welcome. I was very curious about the app so I had to do it lol 😂
The Blackmagic app is professional, but also consumer at the same time
Thank you for sharing your thoughts
Hi Zdenka, I noticed that in previous versions of BM app the codec Apple ProRes 4444 was present but in the new updates it disappeared , did it happen to you as well?
I didn’t notice that … I have to check
Hi, have you tried using external stereo mics on the Blackmagic app? Will the app record each separately or just record in mono? Great review btw.
Unfortunately, I didn’t not try that yet
@@ZdenkaDarula so far I have not been successful doing it with several types of mics.
Is there any chance this can be used with S23 ultra?
Unfortunately no.. they only created it for iPhone
No. IOS only.
Looking forward to your findings. Not seen anything on RUclips or elsewhere so far sadly.
This is for iPhone only?
Do you know if they will make one for Android?
Yes, it is for iPhone only. Unfortunately, I don’t know if it is going to be available for android.
Great review. App looks more intuitive than FP. I see LUTs are available to import. But what about filming in Log? FP has that as a paid option.
Yes, so far now log in this one
@@ZdenkaDarula 8 bit or 10 with rec 2020?
Excellent review, Zdenka - thank you
Does this app support log recording, and if it does, where can we get the LUTs?
No, it cannot do Log yet
Yes it does support Apple Log if you record in ProRes format.
And Prolost has the LUTs you need.
@@RonCoyhow to though ?
Interesting video, thanks. I have just installed this on my phone to give it a go and use a Zhiyun Smooth gimbal. I was curious though about the pointer you use in this. Seems useful so could you give the info on it.
The pointer is just screen pan you can buy in any dollar store. I hope this helps.
For me it makes jittering on Hohem M6 (the stabilisation is off) using Iphone 12 max pro, other apps do perform flawlessly, I might have missed some option to tick but that's how it is.
That is interesting. Thank you for sharing this. I’m gonna test it out myself with 15 pro.
I've used Filmic Pro for about five years, but the Blackmagic app looks interesting and I will give it a try. Thanks for sharing.
You are very welcome
What phone did you use to record this video? I'm about to buy one iPhone 12 PRO and I want to use Applr PRO RES mode, whereas it isn't supported to record on that mode natively.
I used iPhone 14 Pro
Fabulous video thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi there, I was wondering if you could help me out
What it is I’ve just bought the new iPhone 11 Pro Max
And when I’m recording, it seems to be jumping
Whilst recording my video
I’m not too sure if it’s got something to do with the settings or if you could advise me if you’ve had this experience before
I wasn’t too sure if it was a bug in the actual app
Well, I have a project upcoming very soon and would need to get this problem sorted so if you’ve got any advice that would help me out massively
Recently just watched one of your new videos also I noticed that
You purchased the new M7
Would you recommend that over the M6 Gimble?
Which one would you say is perform better in your opinion
Was just wondering, does it still do the barrel roll feature? Also many thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you for your comment. I’m very sorry you’re having this issue. Unfortunately, I have never tried that phone so I’m afraid I can’t really help. If you feel it is jumpy and you’re filming an automatic mode it might be because the frame rate is irregular. Try filming in manual mode instead.
@ hey thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I shall look into that. Thank you.
That is how I look at it myself
Totally agree. I enjoy legacy and for my needs it's good. Feature set in Filmic is great though Blackmagic interate well
Legacy app doesn’t work anymore or at least for me it doesn’t. Blackmagic for the win.
Diky za video. Mam obe dve appky a kazda ma neco. S BM teprve zacinam.
Děkuji mockrát za sdílení
I've been researching camera apps lately.
I've installed the Black Magic Camera app because everyone says it's good, but it doesn't seem to autofocus when taking close-ups.
I think I'm more comfortable with the original camera app for taking videos, but am I doing something wrong?
You should be able to focus on a close-up objects… I prefer native camera app for most of the filming as well
@@ZdenkaDarula Thank you for your reply.
can we use BlackMagic to take still photos?
It is only for video
@@ZdenkaDarula Ah ok - thank u for the quick reply
At this point, the apps and cameras are so good, the final product now depends on your creativity.
And this is the comment of the day!!! Absolutely agree with you 100%
Just installed the app and I have the option to select Rec.2020 - HDR for color space so you can shoot in HDR using the app from what I can tell so far
Thank you for sharing
How about LOG PROFILE?
Not yet I believe
Blackmagic all the way! I think your correct, blackmagic will be adding more options soon! Great review Zdenka as always! Thank You!
You are very welcome
Not able to do low shutter in BM, did anyone try to shoot in low shutter, the least for me went for 1/25
Noted… I’ll look into it
I lost faith with Filmic Pro when they changed the pricing structure so I have been hunting for an alternative and the Blackmagic Camera app may be it especially as I as also moving from Lumafusion to Davinci Resolve. Would it be easier to colour edit Blackmagic footage in Davinci Resolve with colour managemnet?
I think it would be easier to colour the files or worked with the files in DaVinci resolve … it is made by the same company, so I’m assuming they did some integration there
Filmic Pro is also available on Android, so when will this be???
Nobody knows
WOWO THANKS YOU FOR SHARING VIDEO❤
You are very welcome
Thanks for your time very nice explanation
You are very welcome
Many thanks for this. I have been using FilmicPro for a while but this Black Magic app looks very interesting - especially as my preferred editing solution is their DaVinci Resolve 18.6 on my MAC.
You are very welcome.
Thanks!
You are very welcome. I will be looking into apps for android soon.
Thank you so much for sharing and explaining what do you like. I can see that you’re using the app for more serious filming…. Best wishes
