My use of the term spinoff isn't meant to remove from the series canon. The games are deviations (spun off) their typical outings. Deadlocked/Gladiator is indeed canon.
Agreed
According to official sources, Deadlocked and Size Matters are canon, while Secret Agent Clank is non-canon (sort of, it is in-universe fiction). Though, if Secret Agent Clank was canon, it would be placed between Size Matters and Tools Of Destruction, since it both takes place in the Solana Galaxy and Clank is kidnapped at the end of Tools Of Destruction.
I get what you mean, it's like how Kingdom Hearts reserves the numbering of entries for the ones with the typical gameplay style while ones that deviate from the typical gameplay style in some manner - while still being a part of the timeline - get the subtitle treatment
I mean, what better cover for a secret agent than playing one on TV? "You must be mistaken, I'm not a secret agent, I just play one on TV."
SQUISHY LIES!
David Hasselhoff in a nutshell.
In-game button prompts are monochrome on the PSP for one simple reason. Look at the PSP and tell me if you see any colors on the buttons.
@@jaydickstein Apparently not close enough to know that the buttons are monochrome.

Size Matters is known for having a lot of game-breaking bugs on the PS2 port, especially in regards to saving and loading. It's entirely possible to get through the game without experiencing these, but the fact that they exist and are relatively common is why people believe it's a bad port.
Yep, however most arguments I see speak otherwise about why they're bad. I did mention these things in my last Size Matters video.
What, seriously? I got mine copy on PS2 and it works just fine. Sure you don't mean Secret Agent Clank for PS2? That port wouldn't let me progress after the second planet lol without damaging the memory card.
Ehhh the original Ps2 trilogy isn't shy of game breaking bugs. I've lost so many savefiles in 1 because of the lost in space glitch.
Going Commando took away my guns when I went to New game plus. Going through levels with just the starting gun and nuke was hell, I quit that save since I'd need to grind for hours just to get back the weapons I already bought.
@@ORLY911 Yeah GC isn't the best quality wise. UYA can be replayed a dozen of times without any major issues.
When I was in middle school, one of my classmates gave me Size Matters for free for no real reason other than they knew I liked video games. I didn't even own a PSP at the time, and when I eventually did get one, the game still lingered in my long list of "games that I own but have never actually played because I'm a huge procrastinator".
I played it on my PSP as a kid and I LOVED it havent played it in years but if its as good as i remember you re probably gonna have a great time if you play it

First TheGamingBrit and now you? Love how 2021 started with new Ratchtet and Clank videos.
Same same SAME. Ignored and unloved for so long! And now? More ratchet
I'm coming up next :D
It's funny. When Deadlocked first came out, I loved it, but for some reason I had this thought in the back of my head that it was the black sheep of the franchise. It's surprising to me how many people loved it. I also put a ton of time into both R&C3 and Deadlocked online. Jak X too. PS2 Online was an experience we'll never get to enjoy again. Truly a magical time.
Actually there's an unofficial way to play R&C3 online now, I can't recall what it's called exactly but it does exist

I haven't played it in many years but I certainly remember it being cool as hell.
The fact that it switches between characters and level types makes it so something different is always happening, which I really like

I remember Secret Agent Clank is what got me into the series. Except it crashed during a quark stage and it just loaded up a black void with the text ‘Quark’s left cheek’ and I still have no fucking clue what this means
HAHAHAHAHAJJAHHAHAH
You forgot to talk about the online aspect of deadlocked, the servers are back online via fan efforts and you can easily get connected again with a simple DNS replacement on the PS2 version (the better version)

Plot twist: Nefarious actually made the Secret Agent Clank game
Which explains the why it's canonically inconsistent with how the plot is written.
About the Ratchet: Deadlocked auto-aiming: it's a feature you can't turn off; there's even alpha mods to increase auto-aimimg
36:57 *God is dead*
In conclusion... "best dialogue ever"
Secret Agent Clank on PS2 has the worst loading times I’ve seen, longer than Crash Wrath of Cortex & Sonic 06. The actual game is mixed for me, it’s trying to have a lot of gameplay styles which don’t always work well together
i like ur name and pfp
It's funny cause deadlocked was called gladiator here in Australia
Here in Portugal it was called gladiator too
haha In Germany too😃
Deadlocked (Gladiator here) was always my favorite, me and my brother played the co-op SO many times.
Size matters was a fever dream though, I can barely even remember it other than the creepy robot girl.
34:04 "Yee-ha" Lol
I like the way you give credit where it's due and look for positives to mix in with the negatives, instead of just bashing a game. I personally had a lot of fun with these three games as a kid, looking back tho, I can agree with a lot of the flaws noted in the reviews. Nice vid!
You know, I might get a bit of hate for this, but I love every single Ratchet and Clank game. (With the exception of the mobile games) Sure some are better then others, and some are way better then some. But I really cannot get enough of em.
Same for me every ratchet and clank are good
Let me tell you Deadlocked (Gladiator for us) was the perfect genre transition for a kid edging on puberty. Edgier looks, edgier characters, story and weapon names and effects. The focus on combat and mayhem on top hit just the spot and distilled what's really fun about R&C, which is blasting people and stuff
"It's fly as frick!"
I'm keeping this
Fly as frick, Aka faf.
"This game is faf" :)
For what i can tell secret agent Clank is a Dream that Clank has during quest for booty most likely when Nefarius was scanning his memory to open the Orvus Chamber
this was a theory created by the community tho, insomniac never said this (altough it's a theory that I like)
People don't get Size Matters. It was developed by a handful of people who used to work with Insomniac. It capture alot of the aesthetic and beauty of the first game. It's dark, moody and evil. I also love the challenging aspect. Otto was a pain but it was so satisfying to beat him and then unlock the RYNO which allowed you to kick some serious butt in Challenge Mode.
. Unpopular opinion; i more see this as the sequel to the first game then Going Commando.
Started watching your content earlier this week, really nice to listen to. Keep it up, dude!

I need to get back in to making Ratchet and Clank videos!
Loving these Ratchet videos you’re putting out. I also didn’t like Deadlocked as much as a kid and didn’t finish it either. I’d say for me it was because it didn’t feel like a standard ratchet game at the time and I wanted to explore planets instead. I love it now, especially for the co-op
Here it's called ratchet gladiator, and boy it's so much fun. When my dad gave it for me as a present I already had played the other 3 and the frantic arena pace took me out of place but soon I was hooked to the crazy action. I always liked the gladiator sections of the other games so more of that was fine to me.
I'm so triggered! Ratchet 4 isnt a spinoff, its the best in the series
The first 2 are better
@@dracospin239 *see lock strafe
Agreed. One of the best in the series (I'm always tied between Deadlocked and 2) and otherwise the story/gameplay are a continuation of 2 & 3, it's not like Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, All 4 One and QForce/Full Frontal Assault that do branch out in story and gameplay ideas and never get referenced again either. And the name doesn't count either as a point, as many games drop the 4 in the title (and it was Ratchet and Clank 4 in Japan too so it's not like it isn't counted as Ratchet and Clank 4 elsewhere in the world too regardless of the name when the rest is clear after playing the tutorial and watching the first cutscenes that it feels the same as the rest, and not High Impact games level of different for the series like the Future saga ones are [including Into The Nexus being Ratchet Future 4 as it has the same gameplay, characters, and story with the dimensionator]).
Ah yes, Ratchet:Renegade.
@Mike McCormick u
Deadlocked is legit my favorite in the series
Same
My favorite tracks in size matters is both Inside Clank tracks, "Inside Clank" and "Fixing Clank". Give them a listen on YT or Khinsider. :)
I loved Size Matters. Except for the hoverboard races. I blocked them out of my memory until seeing them in this video, almost gave me a panic attack lol
I personally never gave deadlocked a chance as a kid & I loved everything else from PS2 & PSP era
Definitely recommend giving Deadlocked a shot
You fucked up missing deadlocked
Ratchet Deadlock (or Gladiator here in Europe) was the first one i've played because it came with my PS2. To this day, it is my fave game of the series. Only recently, and i'm talking about the past 2 months, ive played the original trilogy and i loved it. i like the third one more because some of the mechanics are closer to Gladiator.
About that Clank skill point. That can easily be achieved with the Electrock armor as it makes your wrench fucking busted. It does a shit load of damage and shoots a shockwave that does even more. You can beat the final boss with just that wrench. Look up Size Matters wrench only and watch the final episode.
Me who liked Size Matters and Secret Agent clank a lot as a kid on my PSP.
I had no idea about that chapter feature, I saw the arrow there but never thought about clicking it.
I can't wait for Top Hat Gaming Man A.K.A. Richard Parliament to do 1 of Frame's intros... Yeeahhhhhhhhh FrameRater!
Ratchet Gladiator (PAL version of Deadlocked) was the first Ratchet game I played and one of the first shooter-action games I ever played. I remember having a blast with it back then and recently got a Ps2 NTSC copy of Deadlocked, and i'm having an even bigger blast with it now! It's some of the most fun i've ever had with my Ps2, the controls are perfect and feel totally modern, the graphics could pass for Ps3 on occasion, the weapons are ultra satysfying and are very well balanced (my god the scorpian flail is amazing) and the writing is hilarious!
Btw, the auto aiming happens on Ps2 aswell.
One of the reasons I hate the ps2 version of Size Matters, is that they didn't adjust the camera distance in the port, so everything is too close to the camera, making the game feel a bit claustrophobic compared to the other ps2 games and also the animations and overall feel of the weapons is really meh. I just couldn't bother finishing it.
Nah dude, it's not every jump, it's THAT single slingshot-to-grindrail jump in the Tower of Power mission. Took me nearly 10 times. When the in-game commentator talks about having the Deadzone interns design the course for that mission, he wasn't wrong! XD
Deadlocked ain’t a spinoff
This.
Yeah it is.
I wonder how many times I'll get this comment... probably until the end of time.
Regardless, a game being considered a spinoff does not necessarily mean it is not part of the series canon, which is why I assume you've mentioned it. I even considered specifying this in my script, but I honestly did not think people would have much of a problem with that. It is a canon game, but it's still a spin-off the traditional Ratchet & Clank formula.
@@FrameRater you put it to words better than I could
@@HughAverageHomoMan its not
If there is anything I will defend is the ship segments in Commando since it's the refined ship segments from the first game. And it only got worse with every installment later with it's ship segments so Commando has the peak when it came to the ship segments.
This video is so underrated, GET MORE VIEWS YOU DESERVE IT!
I really liked Secret Agent Clank :D
I liked it as a kid but only cos it was the only none broken ps2 disc
Watching the footage of Size Matters I really dont remember any of it. Besides a few levels and the on rails Clank sections none of it looks familiar which is strange because I finished it when it first came out.
Also, i wanna brag that yes, i have played deadlocked online back when it was still barely alive in 2010
It was easily the best part of the game and i regret not trying online on the PS2 sooner
There are two theories how Secret Agent Clank kinda ties into the whole continuity.
Theory #1: This game is actually one special episode of the Secret Agent Clank holofilm series. I do not know how relevant Secret Agent Clank was after Up Your Arsenal as the popularity, kinda died down. Plus its very unlikely the public knew who Klunk was, as the whole time he's been undercover as a spy to act like Clank during the Q-Force missions against Dr Nefarious so the only ones who knows who Klunk is were Nefarious, Lawrence, Courtney Gears (she was his subordinate so it should make since), Clank, and eventually Ratchet.
Theory #2: This game takes place inside Clank's Dream while he was sleeping inside the Great Clock, which actually makes the most since why the game was released after Tools of Destruction. That'll definitely explain why this game feels very weird and how Clank envisioned himself as the Hero disguised as an Undercover Agent.
I feel the later of the two makes the most since.
This being a dream would make the most sense since in reality, unrelated concepts have a way to find their way into each other in a dream. However that goes with the theory that Clank is even capable of having dreams in the first place. Maybe... it was Ratchet's dream?
@@FrameRater In Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Clank was able to enter his subconscious and interact with his father Orvus, or at least a projection of him, everytime he enters a mnemonic chamber. Even the plumber somehow found his way inside Clank's subconscious. I believe it can be possible for him to dream.
Wait how does Clank have a dad? If anything wouldn't that be Chairman Drek?
@@FrameRater Lets just say Orvus created the created the schematics for Clank and then imported it to a robot factory on planet Quartu when the machine malfunctioned, unintentionally creating a small robot instead of the other warbots.
You'll find a bit of answers in the Future Saga. Basically, Clank is created by the Zoni as he can manipulate time and quantum energy, and his destiny in the future is to be the senior caretaker of the Great Clock, to keep time stable to prevent another universal catastrophe.
Few things satisfy like equipping the lava or acid buffs to a gun on deadlocked
I finished deadlocked 5 times in all difficulties very simple
Size matters armour sets were so good. Would love the NG+ bolt multipliers
Unpopular opinion:
I really like Size Matters because it exploits the most its RPG mechanics, compared to other games in the franchise where the RPG mechanics are very "slighty" and Secret Agent Clank tries to do something different with the original formula and doesnt feel repetitive, i think that its minigames are also the best in the series, while the original trilogy have boring minigames that feels very off compared to the actual action... And Deadlocked for me gets very boring and repetitive over arena to arena, doesnt change to much the game modes... And i never like it the fact that there`s only like 10 or less weapons.
Same, I've always liked Ratchet and Clank size matters and always thought it was underrated. Although I still think deadlocked was a great game.
@@knightforge6920 It was okay i guess, but i dont know, it gets very repetitive..... I respect your opinion though.
@@sebastianaliandkulche Yeah, but you do have some good points on some of the issues with the game. Really it just comes down to if the arena style gameplay appeals to you.
Size Matters is the Ratchet and Clank game I played the most growing up, only because I could play my PSP whenever I wanted but had limited access to my PS2.
To nitpick a bit, the stress should be on “Can”, because that’s what’s different about the lines
“You should not lose what you do not have.”
“You CANnot lose what you do not have.”
My favorite discovered content creator of last year
"My friend has a ps5 and I can record over there"
too soon to borrow it I guess lol
I remember when I was a kid and I chose the wall-e game instead of secret agent clank, I bought wall-e and it was the first game I was disappointed with
6:40 that's the aim mod, you can unequip it
Is this equipped when you start a new game? Because I made a note of this when I was playing the first stage of the game.
@@FrameRater yeah, some weapons come with the mod preequipped, like the vipers
@@FrameRater All weapons feature "Alpha" and "Omega" mods in Ratchet Deadlocked. The Omega mods changes how the weapon interacts with the enemy/environment, i.e., poisoning, transmogrification, placing napalm, etc.
The Alpha mods affect the guns themselves, such as, changing their ammo count, blast radius, fire rate, etc. The "lock on" mod (the red circle that appears on enemies) can be removed by removing the Alpha mods associated with aiming. You can also weaken/strengthen any Alpha mod depending on how often you add it to a weapon.
I think the main guy wanting "power" was his own personal motive while getting credit was what he used to get the rest of the Technomites to follow him into that whole mess. And I like the idea of the armor system in size matters, the execution has some issues I think. Yeah, it's neat that the wrench gets some new features depending on your armor set. But how often do you use the wrench in combat? And if you do go out of your way to use it then you're wasting XP that could be used to level up your weapons, making you overall weaker as you progress further into the game, which makes the enemies being bullet spongey all the worse. There's no reason to use any combination of armor pieces other than what provides the highest defensive bonus. Which is a shame, the system is a hell of an idea.
I remember in deadlock you could go into first person. Not sure if anyone else knew that but once I did it back in the day it really became the only game I’d play.
2 and 3 have it as well
If Framerater got freindzoned (Womans Voice) "No, framerater!”
cringe
Deadlocked has a special place in my heart... It was the first game i completed doing co-op with a friend!
My only gripe with secret agent clank is that some of the skill points are too difficult to achieve.
deadlock / gladiator was honestly my favorite game on ps2 right next to swBF2. endless hours on those.
you could say that the events of the 3rd Ratchet game gave inspiration to the story of secret Agent, that way all the characters fit
You should speak to Jak and Daxter next. J&D is the sister series to Rachet & Clank, despite not making it past the PS2.
With Jak & Daxter, there is plenty to discuss. The departure from "formula" between J&D:PL and Jak II. The spin off such as Daxter & Jak X. And everything culminating in the awful conclusion of Jak & Daxter the Lost Frontier.
It'd be interesting to contrast these sister series as Rachet & Clank did so much better as its still getting new instalments.
Edit: spelling
Deadlocked was the first game in the franchise I played, so it has a special place in my heart.
I got Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank to work on my PS3, but it's the backwards compatible PS3 model.
Played these to bits
Deadlocked is NOT a spinoff. It's actually the fourth mainline PS2 game.
"In media, a spin-off is a radio program, television program, video game, film, or any narrative work, derived from already existing works that focus on more details and different aspects from the original work (e.g. particular topics, characters or events)." - Wikipedia
I have to admit it's frustrating that people keep mentioning this, a spinoff does not mean it isn't canon to the story. It is a spin off the original games, it's not the same, it does something different.
Oh okay then
doesnt the PS2 port have a problem where it selfdestroies sometimes when saving
Deadlocked is very clearly established as taking place directly after 3. Not to mention Ace Hardlight is name dropped in both Future 1 and 2. Deadlocked is in no way a spinoff.
Please look up the definition of a spinoff.
YES it is a spin-off...Insomniac has literally said it was a spin-off....It doesn't matter when a game takes place, when said game is literally made to kill time between releases of real mainline games.
Deadlocked having sticky aim is in fact a ps3 port only thing, its really annoying and really messes with the dance of combat
16:30 ah yes: David *Bergoo*
Can't play Secret Agent Clank, because I can't square circle X fast enough. Will give another go.
Ratchet and clank my childhood so excited for the new game on ps5,i hope they remaster the series over time so everyone can enjoy them
Ah yes Secret Agent Clank, not the best game on the whole trilogy but at least it tried it darn best for a portable spinoff of Ratchet and Clank.
My main issue with that game is that Clank is the one that gives Ratchet all the cool moves and powerups most of the time, at least he complements Ratchet's moveset quite well, and i kinda thought a game dedicated entirely to this robot and its ability to transform i different awesome stuff could be neat, but they dont use him very well and that's the shame here, Clank has a good potential to have his own game but he ended up like Daxter having a run on the mill kinda boring game that's quite messy.
I still want somebody that at least tries at making Secret Agent Clank a better game by remaking it or trying to make it with a new angle that could at least make it cool to play.
Wow I didn’t even know about choosing chapters
Full frontal assault is a tower defense game that wanted to make I little splash with multiplayer, and it forgot the water. It's okay... played it on the vita.
I love my copy of Ratchet Deadlocked
I've been a lifelong fan of ratchet and clank, and as a kid I remember really wanting to play secret agent clank but never got around to it.
I'm glad, I've only heard bad things about it lmao
Funnily enough there is an actual TV network called VOX in Germany
Don't know where you got idea that a silver trophy equates to a platinum, but you do actually need to collect the rest of the trophies to unlock it.
The trophy "Hero of the Shadow Sector" is a platinum trophy. So I'm not sure what you're referring to.
For anyone wondering...
A modded PSTV/vita tv is also a good way to play psp games :)
Yes, size matters’ armor system is awesome. Should definitely return to the series
Deadlocked I think always ended up being my most played, of the games on the PS2. Might actually be my favorite, but haven’t played it since. The weapons are definitely my favorite of the originals. I wish it got a proper HD release or they had a version on the disc with the other mediocre ports on the PS3.
I love Gladiator (Deadlocked). Though I was always player 2, so got to be Jak.
At least the soundtrack was always a solid 10/10 up to tools of destruction
Did not know mixed armor sets in Size Matters did anything
Size Matters is the kind of game that wouldv benefits being made on a more powerful console, especial when it involve size shrinking sections.
They already ported it to PS2. I have no experience with that version though.
One of my childhood games was Secret Agent Clank and honestly i enjoy it bit agree that there are bad parts and other less than stellar stuff
I'm just gonna say having beat both these games 28 times each I find them fun but I do wish the plot was more connected with how some events affect others
Deadlock is playable in first person mode too
I wouldn't call Deadlocked a spin-off. It's essentially a main entry in the series.
I didn't say it wasn't.
But I did say it was a spinoff.
