DIY Knee Kicker, how to make your own Carpet Kicker, cheap

  • I Didn't want to spend the money on a knee kicker just to put down a bit of carpet in part of my basement, so instead I made this homemade knee kicker out of mostly stuff I already had around my house. Some strap 2x4s, some old hardwood flooring, nails, under-padding and some duct tape
Ultimately I ended up buying a used one off Kijiji, and then sold it on Kijiji when I was done with it. but I was able to do the stairs with this wooden one.

7 years on and this was spot on warren....its not meant for using on every carpet ever made but as a one off...great.... took me 20 mins to make and allowed me to install a carpet with no problem....saved me £40 ($50) at local hardware store. If i have another carper tp fit I'd just change the angle of the nails. Nice One.

Thank you for the tips. I needed one today. It was the first time in 50 years that I used one. So I made one even cruder than yours and it worked perfect! No need to throw money down the drain for 3 minutes of use. Thanx!

Hey man thanks for putting this vid up it saved me a few quid, I was also putting in a cheap end of roll in my basement and only needed to use it once. Perfect solution 😋

I replaced carpet in a hallway, but needed to stretch the bedroom entrance off the hallway and a couple of closets back onto tack strips, so this is the perfect approach for me. The "good enough for what I need" approach.

Like the video that's great. I went and bought one. 100 bucks. Before I did my inlaws and uncle older then me . Old school guys they kept telling me to make my own. I thought it would be to complicated. But you made it look easy. Good to know incase I ever loose the one I bought. And need one in amergency. If I'm in the middle of a job. Scraps of wood and nails I have a lot of it always around the shop. Now I know how to make now thanks if I ever needed to.

I install flooring for a living. This is a good idea for a diy one time deal. Only thing is, when you're cutting your padding for the kicker, check each piece. Sometimes there is a hard piece of sharp plastic in there you don't want to cut your leg on. Be safe have fun!

  • @trevorjames5493

Not a bad idea haha ideally what you want is the snap back of the kicker when it's fully extended but your way would just be like using a short kicker not extended, won't stretch as good and you'll definitely feel it in your knee a lot more without it absorbing the impact but it would work but I was really hoping you showed a clip of the kicker in action at the end lol

This is a pretty old video, I have since ripped all the carpeting out of my basement and put laminate plank flooring down, but my stairs are still carpeted, and I plan to carpet them so that the colour matches the new flooring. Since I’m only doing the stairs, I’ll probably make one of these again.

Honestly u do need cottenheads so you don't rip the carpet,or skin the pile from the backing.just put lots of pressure on your home made kicker head and don't kick hard. You'll do fine nice invention bud.

The teeth on tack strips would likely be too short as they are designed to hold the bottom part of carpet. Teeth need to be long enough to go all the way through from the top down.

its true, I could have, but I was doing my basement and stairs in my evenings, took a few weeks, once you include moving stuff from room to room, laying under-padding etc. I scored all the carpet to do the basement for $150 new, torn out of a new townhouse cause they didn't like the colour. it was a bit of a hack job, but its only temp, last me a few years till I reno the entire basement. this piece of crap work for my stairs, but ultimately I ended up buying a used one for $40, used it to finish my basement, then resold it. cheaper then renting

BTW lets calculate just for fun, the cost of the drill, drill bit, the saw to cut the wood, the hammer, the duct tape, the nails and oh yea the time to create this master piece, now how much to rent a kicker? about $15....... hmmmm this is a tough one to figure out.
