  • Comparing two very popular 9mm defensive pistols on today's market, the M&P Shield Plus from Smith & Wesson and the SIG P365 XL. Both of these are very good choices, in my opinion.

I don't feel like a double-stack polymer 9mm has been made in the past 40 years that significantly stands out from the rest. I have my own preferences and other people
have theirs, but trading my preferred double-stack 9mms with any other of the hundreds of other options out there would have a minimal impact. I appreciate your exuberance, but isn't the exact opposite true?

    • @mikeharvey9184
      @mikeharvey9184 2 года назад +29

@@ExtremeSquared But has there been a polymer double stack in the last 50 years the size of this current crop of micro-compacts? I've owned a couple, and they were substantially chunkier than this current line of offerings. The G26 and G19 is noticeably thicker than the G43/43x/48 (with Shield magazines), the M&P's are noticeably thicker than Shield Plus, and my P320 with a subcompact module is still quite a bit thicker than the P365. There simply hasn't been anything this small with this much capacity before.

    • @ExtremeSquared

@@mikeharvey9184 It is cool engineering. But a 10% reduction in thickness versus comparable pistols is as niche of a feature as another pistol's 10% better trigger to most people. One of the reasons I enjoy this man (and a few others) so much is the balance that he provides in these evaluations. It's clear which gun he personally prefers, but acknowledges the reasons you might choose either one. He does not attempt to pick an obvious winner, and there really isn't one, as there are several different applications for the guns, and many variables in what personally matters to us, how we are physically built, etc. Both guns have major followings, for good reason. Really nice to always come here for some maturity, with all of the hyperbolic nonsense and extreme opinions out there. I appreciate it. Can already imagine how polarized this comment section will be but at the end of the day I don’t care what anyone says, BOTH of these two guns are the top 2 best micro 9 guns out there. Which one you prefer is just preference at the end of the day.
The 365 was a game changer and although many manufacturers have made great attempts to replicate it the shield plus is the only one that’s come close to dethroning it.
Personally I prefer the shield plus simply because I already have owned previous shields and compatibility with holsters was a no brainer. I am also amittedly a pretty big fanboy of Smith & Wesson.
But when a good buddy of mine went to buy his first handgun last year I pointed him directly at the p365 because it is a phenomenal handgun of equal quality.

I've got a couple XL's, one stock and one upgraded a bit. If you own an XL and you're wishing the grip was more robust check into the Wilson Combat grip modules with improved texture and slightly beefier grip circumference. They can also be used with Wilson's tungsten weight set which slides into the grip just behind the magazine and improves overall balance. Makes the XL feel and shoot like a slightly larger gun but keeps that narrow profile and all the concealed carry goodness.

The pistols were the (Glock 19, Glock 43X, Sig 365XL, Shield Plus, Glock 45, Glock48) After a year of shooting, these two pistols are what I have left. It's been a hard decision between the two. The shield has a smoother trigger, but the 365xl trigger is more predictable and comfortable in my experience. I added the Talon covers for each of them. The slightly lower bore axis on the 365XL has made it my choice so far. It doesn't feel as snappy as the Shield for me. The Shield does have a safety for those that prefer that option. It was a consideration for me. A good pocket holster makes me feel safe with either w/o the safety. Thanks Hickok for the video.

I just purchased the original Shield (CA Compliant) with Bass Pro gift cards (been saving them for a while, this Christmas put the finishing touch on what was needed).
I had a hard time finding one since the newer 2.0 and Plus that you can't buy I California, have basically phased out the original Shield. I was told there were only 2 left
in all the Bass Pro Shops. The one I bought is a sales/demo gun out of the case. I bought it sight unseen, since California hasn't allowed new guns basically since 2012
or 2013. They have in a sense banned new guns by requiring the manufacturer to micro engrave the firing pin so the primer on the spent casing can be identified. Absolutely
ridiculous. Of course, no manufacturer is going to do this. If they change the name or grip of a gun it has to go through all the tests, and drop tests again even though it is internally the same firearm. They are creating loopholes to take away our second amendment rights. I can't purchase the "new" version of a gun that was introduced in 2017. California Sucks!

The P365 xl is a great platform. Regarding your light primer strike check the spring cup on your striker assembly. For a while Sig was using a one piece spring cup which may have been limiting the amount the striker could protrude from the breech face resulting in possibly sporadic light primer strikes. This was discussed on a Sig forum. I believe they have gone back to the two piece spring cup which alleviates the issue. At least by verifying that you have the 2 piece spring cup you could eliminate that as a possible cause.

When the P320 fell flat on its face during military tests I noticed the Glock 19 finishing in the top two every time. I kept this in mind. So when I had the opportunity to steal a used gen 3 for 300 bucks I bought it. I did so with the idea of creating what some called a Gucci Glock. After giving it every possible upgrade for range only purposes I soon discovered (after 1000 rounds) that I had put together a pistol with a 3 3/4 to 4 lb trigger, a barrel with 1911 accuracy, and the proven dependability to be an EDC. I enjoyed building it so much that I did the same with my Shield 1.0.
It appears from your videos that you have an affinity towards SigSauer systems. Being the owner of several older models like the P210 and the P5 more commonly known as the P225, I would also agree that appraisal. @Watchdog_McCoy_5.7x28 2 года назад

@@Iliek the slide lock is actuated by the follower in the magazine once the magazine is empty. When you load a loaded magazine, the follower is no longer pushing the slide lock upwards, and the slide lock is easy to push down because the only thing holding it up is the pressure of the slide pushing on it. In other words, you have to overcome the pressure from the slide release spring as well as the magazine spring when the magazine is empty, versus only the pressure of the slide itself when the magazine is full. On an empty magazine, it's easier to release the slide by pulling backwards while simultaneously pushing the slide release downwards.

The decision gets even more difficult when you upgrade the pistols. Wilson Combat makes an excellent grip frame for the 365 family. Zev makes an extended magazine release and Magguts gives you 14 rounds in the magazine. Magguts also improves the Shield Plus capacity from 10 & 13 to 13 & 15. They both can be made much much better.

I have the 4 inch performance center shield plus and have been very pleased with it. I also own a p365 and for me the shield just feels better in my hand. The p365 feels just a tad too small. Never shot a 365 xl but it does look like it would fix my complaints about the 365. At this point though, I’m so satisfied with the shield plus that I won’t be changing carry guns for a long time.

I love my 365 XL and really liked the Shield, too. I personally think the Glock 48 fits with these two compared to the 43X, standard size P365, SA Hellcat, etc. I chose the 365 XL, but definitely don't think the 48 gets enough love.
All of them are great options. I also love my LCP Max. There are plenty of great firearms for concealed carry nowadays.

I agree with Hickok, you have to shoot them to know. I got a 48 because it seemed like a good option. Then I rented the Plus and I shot it significantly better, even with the shorter barrel. I just like the grip angle and trigger much better.

I've tried several versions of the Shield over the years. I've hated the slippery grips and the triggers. Give the Sig P365 every day. In fact, that's what I do. It's my carry. But... I know a lot of people who love the various Shields, and that's awesome. Variety!
I love that after all these years, the 2 litre bottles still make you chuckle.

I have been with Glocks since the 90's and started getting M&P's 10-12 years ago. I don't alternate carry pistols, I carried a performance center shield for the past few years. Last Aug. I got a Sig 365XL to give it a try, after a few trips to the range, I gave the shield to my Wife so she can carry it instead of a M&P 9c. I have not purchased any larger Sig pistols yet, but 365XL has been awesome so far. Added a Holosun optic to it and like it even more. After my Wife shot it, looks like we will be getting her a 365XL or 365X next trip to the gun shop, then adding a Holosun optic to it.

I owned a regular P365 and had serious accuracy issues with it. Before those gun experts out there hop onto my comment thread, I had three shooting instructors/combat veterans shoot the P365 and we all had the same accuracy issues. It was shooting 2 inches low, and 4 inches left. I carry a 4.25” M&P and can drill the bullseye with pretty much every handgun I pick up. A friend of mine that is left handed (also combat veteran and a hell of a shooter) shot it, and it had the opposite results. We compared the P365 to similar sized guns such as a Glock 43X, G26, XDm, Hellcat, etc. all of us never had a issue with any other of those guns. I adjusted the sights and still never could figure the problem out. I bought a new barrel and had the same issue. I finally sent the gun to Sig and they said they could not figure out the problem either. So, I ultimately sold the gun to a gun shop and walked away from Sig. I want to love the Sig, but I’ve had terrible experiences with them. My left handed friend had bought the M17 and M18. We went shooting and he had a hard extraction on a round he fired. Quality ammo was used. Sheered the extractor off. Loaded the same ammo from that magazine into a Beretta M9A3 and a Glock 45 9mm and it shot and extracted every round from that Sig magazine. We both had the wide eyed look at each other since it was a brand new gun. He ultimately sold one and wants to sell the other. It is pretty unacceptable that happened, especially the amount of money he paid for it and if that was a real self defense scenario, he would have been screwed.

S15 mags will fail quickly unless you upgrade the mag catch also.
So, sure mod yours to make it better, you can do that with any gun. But out of the box the Sig is far superior to the Glock 43X. Better ergos, better finish, flat face metal trigger, 12 and 15 round factory mags, night sights, longer barrel, stainless construction, steel sights, metal mags. Glock sucks man. I hate to say it but, they suck. They were great in the 80's and 90's. Now they are just ok overall with good reliability. Far from perfect like people try to claim.

Attended a recent gun show... plan was to purchase Glock 43x... I got pandora's box syndrome , curious cat... and had to measure touch and feel the rivals. SHIELD, is heavy blocky, bigger than what I was after. Glock fan, but I picked up the Sig P365... the size alone won it for me. But the future will tell how good the thin magazine walls, spring hold up. Loaded some hollow points in sig, tried unloading out top and the bullet didn't pop out due to short slide top... little concern, about bullet getting almost stuck in chamber, but yes I went with the P365 over 43x.... for now.
I test to see how the bullets clear out unloading out the slide top

I cleaned it up before ever shooting and I see nice deep primer strikes. You might check that out if you haven't. It's not a good place for a shock absorber. I used a few Q-Tips followed up with brake cleaner. Hope that helps someone. Keep up the good work!

page 56 in the manual says; "DO NOT LUBRICATE THE STRIKER OR ALLOW LUBRICANT TO FLOW INTO THE STRIKER CHANNEL OF THE SLIDE.
THIS MAY CAUSE A LIGHT STRIKE TO THE CARTRIDGE, RESULTING IN A FAILURE TO FIRE."
So that could be the cause right there.
