      Definitely agree! I waited watching this video because I wanted to see the comments :) I've learned that I am a bumblebug - and that a lot of other people are crosses too. I also live with a butterfly... a very butterfly, butterfly. (Sorta reminds me of Ariel's husband). We are actively working on getting our space to work better together - and me getting my stuff together, so I can find things fast when he goes 'where are the new sponges? Where are my pants?'

No more trying to be someone we're not and getting frustrated because we can't keep up with a system that doesn't work for us. Finding out I was a Ladybug with some Cricket tendencies has opened my eyes and made my life much easier.

      I used to hang everything on the door handles around my house because Im a butterfly but now that I know that I've put over the door organizers and hooks up all over all the doors. It's not everyones idea of beauty or efficiency but all my life I just thought I was a slob and it turns out I just really like seeing my stuff and I like things I use all the time to be in the thresholds of rooms so I know they're there and can grab them easily as I leave a room. It's so nice to have my stuff on the back of doors but not breaking my door handles or preventing my door from fully opening or closing.

    You talking about your husband actually really resonated with me. You said something about maybe he had been told for a long time that he was just a messy person which led to him not even want to try.
    That really hit me because my mom’s organization / housekeeping style is so different from mine. Growing up, she was very particular about it, and I was told many times I just wasn’t cleaning up to standard. Come to find out, I’m a very put together and organized person in my own style.
    It’s a good reminder that as homemakers, we need to be sensitive and aware of the styles of all those living in our home. We need to be willing to be flexible in order to support and encourage our children so that they can learn what works best for them as they enter adulthood.

    • @jocelynsmyth6604

      That sounds a bit like my beau, nothing was ever good enough, then he lived alone/with room-mates, and it didn't matter at first..... and then it got overwhelming and he just didn't want to do anything. Now we've been living together for three years, and while I knew I hoarded, he didn't know he did, and he's really resistant to change. We're working on it together.

    I love Cass's and your videos. I'm so happy for this collab! I'm a butterfly in how I put down clutter (where it's easy to find), but I'm a butterfly in the sense that I don't want to see my stuff because I find it ugly and the visual clutter makes me feel overwhelmed. I've started using baskets with great success. I love how Cass says that the four bugs are divided by people who manage their time differently: two want to put things away quickly and are okay with taking extra time to find items, while the other two are willing to take time to put things away so they're able to find things quickly. I almost cried. I'm not lazy--I just use my time differently. What an amazing revelation!

      Yes I loved that realisation about using time differently! My bf just drops things pretty much wherever ("Football squished into the book shelf, next to the cleaning spray and water bottle? I’m currently going through each room decluttering & it’s a ton of work but I’m feeling much better. Takes time & I work out of the home full time but I’m doing it. For my husband he’s not so keen on me getting rid of stuff. So I kinda stash a box with things in it in my car trunk then donate. It’s just stuff we haven’t used in years. Which we have been doing by among other things, we scrapped the standing wardrobes in our bedroom and created an entirely open plan clothes wall for me and an open Pax wardrobe for him being an also visual Bee. Ps I’ve now learned I am definitely a butterfly and I think my parents are too. 3/4 of the closets in our have had their doors removed over the years. I think my sister is too, as her closets all have had their doors removed too!! 🤣🤣🤣

    Great video. Just a thought. What if you got another extra bin for his cards, and when it is full you take it down to the basement room and leave it there. Get out the second bin and fill it up. Maybe by the time that one is full he will have emptied the first one.

    • @brendalg4
      @brendalg4 11 месяцев назад +3

      I thought of that too but he might not ever empty the other bin. He might get even worse.. knowing that he has two bins and that somebody will bring the first bin to the basement... He doesn't have to clean the first bin at all. When the second bin is full too, he's just going to dump the first bin when he gets nagged to bring it back. He's not going to take the time to sort it neatly back where goes

    What about a card sorting tray/box for your husband? One with various dividers. The stacks of cards, make it look like he needs a more detailed system.

    The genius thing about Clutterbug is, you don't have to constrain yourself to one type all over the house. :) I also had a hard time identifying my type, because I use strategies from all 4 bugs depending on what I am dealing with. (though my main type is a bee, I think)
    For example, for clutter I have yet to sort trough, I put in baskets and hide in a closet. For often used Items, I prefer very visual and easy to get out/put away. For my makeup/self care products, I use micro organizing. But for other things, for example off season clothes that is stored away, I use more macro organizing.
    Because here is the thing: different areas of the home have different requirements. So it makes a lot of sense to use different strategies in different areas of the house. :)

Tried the bin thing, and it landed in his office, never to return! I’ve at least got him on board understanding that we need systems that work for both of us. So he is actually building himself a collection containment unit with a matching piece for his office so things can move back and forth quickly and easily without driving me bananas!

    Clutterbug was the absolute game changer for me!! I never could figure why most of the recommended ways never worked for me, as I spent so much time trying each one! It was because those styles worked against ME instead of for or with ME! Most styles organize in a hidden way and I am visually driven! I even decorate with visual abundance and it makes my heart happy! I am autistic and a butterfly but when I get overwhelmed I get extremely detailed and nitpick. I clean/organize and micromanage in my home if I am stressed about things I can’t control. I always called it ‘productive worrying’ but it turned me into a workaholic with fibromyalgia. I never thought to connect it with my autism because I didn’t find out until I was 58! I love cleaning and organizing and Ariel’s videos make me happy!! (Cas keeps me sane!!) GREAT VIDEO!!

    my husband is also a butterfly. I happen to be a bee, so at least he and I both share the need to see our stuff. We have not progressed beyond stage 1, either, but I noticed that your husband's card bin seems too small for him. The cards are spreading out so he can see them. My husband likes to use pretty trays to keep his stuff. And they are bigger than the bins. They also allow him to see his stuff instead of being inside something he can't see through. I wonder if a clear bin that is a larger size might work better for your husband. And maybe if he had a space to work on his cards that is closer to where the buffet is it would encourage him to put the bin back instead of having to bring it back up from the basement. Good luck! My husband likes to throw his clothes on the floor next to the laundry hamper and to hang his coats and jackets on the kitchen chairs instead of putting them on the hooks in the entryway. Of course he would never open the hallway closet door and hang them up! I love him anyway and I know you love your butterfly too 😉

    I have an idea
    Add an extra empty bin underneath your table so you may replace when the full one is place elsewhere (rotation)

    My space used to look like a home invasion crime scene. I had to walk across piles of mess of stuff and just have a corner on the bed for me to maybe sleep. Let me tell you, following the Clutterbug system helped me tremendously!
    It is easier to keep clean and STAY CLEAN if you are organized. A lot of organizers say that you should organize first then clean and I used to think that does not make sense. But they are right.
    Btw, I am a mix between Butterfly and Ladybug. I keep the items that I reach for most often within easy reach and inside an open bin. Everything else is out of sight out of mind but with labeling on the door to get a quick look of where is what. I have been keeping clean and organized with this system for several months now.

    I just took the quiz and turns out I'm a butterfly. I watched the video and she totally gets me! I never thought of having stuff in large categories with NO LIDS! No lids is so perfect!! It's not every day I come across someone who just gets it like that.

    It took me a long time to figure out my clutterbug style, but the key turning point for me in figuring it out a year or so ago was her recommendation to look at areas of your home that you are pleased with and consistently function well for you. I found two small spots in my home that I really loved and were never an issue, and I had a revelation! Ohhhhhhhhhhh, I am SO a visual person and did not realize it at all. I had thought I was a hidden type because I’m easily overwhelmed by too many things, so I simply assumed I wasn’t visual. In reality, I want to see every last item I have out in plain view, I just want it to be non-chaotic and visually pretty. My solution to this, was to minimize the amount of items in my home and then to treat all items I have as decor, it just so happens that I can stir the soup with my decor LOL! I even have a rule for myself that if it can go on the wall somehow, then put it on the wall 😂. We don’t use closets anymore either, but have an open wardrobe wall. In the end, I think I’m a Bee in her system because I like to put things in pretty rows and decant stuff into jars and things. That revelation that day has changed my entire home! As for my husband, I’m not sure what he is, but he seems to be fine with using whatever visual system I set up, he’s just not as particular about how exactly things are placed, so maybe he’s a butterfly. Thankfully, if he sets something down out of place I don’t mind putting it back in the home I’ve created for it. The only time we run into issues is like your husband and the cards. If he has a project he hasn’t finished it sits out, and boy does that bother me! Thanks for the delightful video! It’s gotten me thinking about how to resolve that issue!

    It’s good that you and your husband have macro in common. I’m a ladybug, and my husband is a bee/butterfly. He naturally organizes like a bee but has a hard time keeping up with his micro systems. He’s a stacker and a spreader, and a saver and collector. 🤦‍♀️ I’m a hider and a declutter-er. So there’s a lot of minimalist vs maximalist. I just compromise and figure there’s worse things in life. So, I put up with the skateboard decks (over 100 now) tools left everywhere, and tiny dragon ball-esque collectibles all over every surface of the computer/family room downstairs. I figure I can put up with all that because he takes care of yard work, car maintenance, plumbing, etc. We’ve got three teens, too, so I figure the house will never be ladybug perfect, or minimalist, but it’s mostly tidy, clean, and comfortable. I can live with that. 😁

She’s so good at breaking things down so you can figure out your style, and she gives a lot of suggestions and explains the reasons behind them, so you know what to look for even if those specific suggestions don’t fit your situation. Hands-down, she’s the most helpful organizing guru I’ve found.

    As a former Magic (that card game those cards are from) player, I was thinking those baskets would be too rough for the cards. And I noticed the paper that got added to line the baskets haha. Probably need a smooth basket for those. Then again I would also try to keep dust from landing on them.

  • @pama.6410
    @pama.6410 11 месяцев назад

    Very entertaining as usual! She came up with some great solutions that seem to work. I wonder if adding incentives would get your husband to empty his card bin every week. He gets the idea. He sees the reason for it, but he doesn't think it is so important that he can't let it slide after a while. Maybe there is a way to show him that things that seem like they aren't that important really are important. How would he like it if you started the week off with great care for your appearance or the kids appearance, but got sloppier about it as the week went on? Would he care? Maybe he wouldn't but maybe he would. He might see where you are coming from. There must be a way to make the trip downstairs worth the effort OR maybe he wants the added expense of adding a room to the first floor so he can have his card collection on the first floor and save himself the walk up and down the stairs? In the grand scheme of things, you are blessed to have these for your crosses to bear, though.

    Loved this and honestly long before Cass I read a book that said look at where you are putting like items and make it a suitable home there instead of trying to give it a new place to live. So if mail ends up continually in the same place give it a bin with things that need to be filed, things that need dealt with like bills and another for things that you will consider but ultimately will be discarded like coupons or weekly ads.
