Love the ending comments, I don’t think it is so much that you are changing your style, more that you really appreciate it when things look pretty! Decanting pantry items, organizing a closet colour coordinated just looks pretty and now that you have your home super organized, you have the time to make every corner not only function, but look pretty too! Cause you are the best! And an inspiration! And just spectacular!
@@ClutterbugI'm so happy for you. You're proud of your new place and your new behavior shows gratitude for what you have. When we work hard to get nice things we take care of them. May God bless your new home with lots of health, peace and joy ❤
Love staying 'till the end and laughing with you! I am a bee who lives with 2 butterflies, my mother and daughter. I am still very detailed but have been more relaxed and calmer in that area. Could a bee on steroids turn into a butterfly?! What's happening?! 😂
Am I the only one on the brink of tears watching this? It makes me feel very hopeful…learned there are different types of organization and that my husband and I are different. Thank you for the advice - the hubs is going to be hanging stuff soon. My husband is neurodivergent and clutter/cleaning is still a struggle we have yet to figure out; again this makes me feel hopeful.
I think our organizing styles can change depending on what season of life we are in. Before kids, I was much more detailed - a micro organizer for sure! After having kids, I was a throw-my-crap-in-a-bin person LOL. But, my kids are getting older and I notice myself getting back to that micro-organization (a little) because I have more time to be detailed. So, it just depends on what my life is like as to what style I use I think.
I am a cricket. My family is all butterflies. The spaces we share, I make the systems for them. I have come to appreciate fast and easy systems. I find myself sticking to easy butterfly systems. I still am a cricket in many ways (I still HAVE to organize my file cabinet in a cricket way), but for everyday stuff, I like the butterfly way of doing things. So I can totally see someone's organizing style changing or being different for different seasons of life.
My “style” has definitely developed over time. I think I’m a bee as I always have numerous projects going all at once. But I’m pretty good at putting things “where they belong” if and when I have a system. I start with regular old boxes (shoe boxes or lids to boxes) to divide and conquer then eventually, if I see the organization works, I switch to pretty containers. I’d say I was a butterfly as I like to see my things or a cricket as when I do get organized, things are pretty detailed but maybe because I’m 63 and have been keeping house for 43 years, my natural style is hidden. Im not sure. Most of my house is neat and tidy and clean. But I have spaces of clutter so 2024 is my year of decluttering!
As a young working divorced mother, my home was often a mess until the weekend when I had time to clean. There were just a few precious hours after work to prepare dinner, play with my children and get them ready for bed. There were days I fell asleep with one of them in a business suit. As they got older, homework time was added and they had chores, so that helped a little, but my main focus was spending time with them at night and not worrying about the mess until they were asleep. I’d get a little done here and there, but the weekends were for cleaning and playing. It was stressful at times looking at clutter during the week, but I knew once the older teen years hit things would be different. And they were. I had more time to organize and keep the mess a little more minimal. When the kids went off to college, I suddenly had the cleanest house and I actually missed the mess and noise. Now I have grands and love the mess we make playing. I even love cleaning it up when they are gone. Make memories loving and enjoying time with family. The mess can be cleaned up later.
You have been such a game changer for me. I have adhd and have struggled my entire life finding any system that works. Recently subscribed and at 35 years old I’m finally learning to not fight against my brain to use others methods but work with it to find solutions that actually work. Thank you for these videos!!!
Cassandra has been absolutely invaluable to me through my journey of organizing my home in a functional way that may not be to everyone's taste, but I think looks cohesive and in a system that works for me. Especially coming out of a major depressive episode, she's been an absolutely godsend. Thank you thank you Miss Clutterbug, you're amazing.
I have definitely morphed from a ladybug to a cricket since moving to a house with more space. I think you hit the nail on the head. Having more space in my closet makes me put things away nicely too!
I just have to say I'm so appreciative that Cass defined these organizing styles the way she did, with no judgment or "fixing" the people who organize differently from her. As a neurodivergent young adult, a lot of my work is learning to accept myself as I am and understanding that needing to do things differently doesn't mean I'm doing them wrong or that I as a person am wrong. Understanding and accepting that my organizing style of "I need to be able to see everything in a category at once but it all has to be hidden when I don't need it or else I can't relax" is perfectly fine was a tiny, early step towards "my life will never look like that of someone who is neurotypical and that's okay."
Yes! She did this absolutely perfectly!! I’ve definitely gotten super ok with accepting myself. But moving in with a partner who is nearly opposite has been so challenging and the way she did this has helped me realize we are just. Different with no judgement. And truly, the only system that will ever work is the one that will get used.
After a TBI, organization as a rule is iffy at best. I want to see my stuff, or else there's sticky notes everywhere to remind me what is behind each door, at least until habit helps me remember. It kind of an oxymoron, but every once in a while I get like a tornado. Empty out everything and resort, declutter and detail organize. I guess my left brain is fighting my right brain, or something... Or maybe it's fantasy self breaking through and trying to take control! Lol!
I love your realism. It has helped me a lot this summer to organise my entire house and to persuade my husband to join in by providing him with solutions and suggestions which make sense to him. You are wonderful! Thank you a lot for all the heart and spirit you put into organisation and decluttering. Love from the UK!
True true true, when I am overwhelmed, my space is overwhelmed! When I have my life together, I have the mental space for my stuff and things just flow... especially as I minimize :)
Your life is so full, and we all love your videos on anything Cass. So happy you made it through to be a firefighter, you're such an inspiration to everyone. Please look after yourself so that burnout doesn't catch you up, take some time to relax too, your health has to stay important for you to handle all you want to do. X
Yes, my organizing style has changed. I think, the more we declutter and organize, we're just enhancing those skill sets. We're streamlining and managing our things in order to become more efficient and to have things visually pleasing. None wrong with that! That's top-tier level organizing...A+ styling! 🤗
I love you Cassie! I love ur podcast! Could u do a video on how to reset ur closet for winter? Changing summer clothes to winter can be overwhelming for families. How to fit all mittens n scarves ??
I got a hamper for my bathroom that hangs on the back of the bathroom door - makes life so much easier because it gives me somewhere that's not the floor to put my dirty clothes, and also doesn't take up much space in my small bathroom.
Omg! yes!!! I LOVE those hanging inside on cabinet doors organizing caddies!!! Open the door & ur stuff is RIGHT THERE! It's a perfect butterfly easy out-of-sight organizing tool!!!
I agree with what you said about having more mental space to organize. A lot of people who don’t put things away struggle with mental health. Neatness and tidiness can be their natural personality, but the desire for tidiness can get overtaken by depression and other mental health struggles. Having a sense of peace can be really freeing to the minds of those who struggle with mental health. Having a sense of finally achieving that peace can give someone a renewed sense of purpose in their space, like a key unlocking a door in their mind that they’ve had blocked off for years.
The get ready basket has been a game changer for me, I love having a clean countertop and not dealing with a bunch of clutter. I'd never convince my husband to go the basket route, but I did get him one of those ceramic trays to at least keep his stuff contained. It's working perfectly for him! No more toothpaste rings on the countertop from where he put his electric toothbrush is a win for me haha.
Same, but shoving my clutter behind closed doors STILL gets to me. My husband cannot fathom why it bothers me so much to KNOW that there is still a mess. 😅
I find that your space can dictate your organizing style you have to work with what you've got, and if it's really limiting on options then you can't really organize in a way that works best for you. So if your environment changes and you now have enough space to embrace your style needs, it makes a huge difference.
Yes, as we get older or move through different life stages, I think our "styles" change. For me, as my kids are growing up and more independent, I have more mental capacity to care about more detailed organizing. I'm sure your new house has an influence on you too. It's beautiful! 😍
And or not having more things than you have space for. Sometimes the, “if I only had more (fill in the blank) space, money etc. “ I would/could be organized, happy or whatever.
I thought I was going crazy. I’ve always been a butterfly. But since the get organized HQ, I’ve been hiding my stuff. I have a get ready bin, and I put it away every day. I think I was using clutter as decor because I didn’t know what to do with an empty space, lol. My bedroom and bath are so serene and put together now. I didn’t know I could do this. Thanks so much!! Now I just need to tackle the rest of the house…
I have to say, this channel have changed my life in the last year and a half. I did declutter - but without understanding good organisation, I would have never been as this stage now. 😅 I know this is controversial, but I actually think that, rather than everyone having one organising style, it is the space that determines what organising style suits this part of the house. Hear me out: - Lots of time on your hands: micro organisation is ideal - Less time on your hands: macro organisation is ideal - High mental/physical energy in general: visual organisation is ideal - Low mental/physical energy in general: hidden organisation is ideal - And the key to all of it: Declutter to the point that you actually have room for a functional space. ☺ It is not so much that people are one specific organising style; it is more that different organising styles fit different areas of the house/life. In the closet and in decoration, I am a bee with everyday things, and a ladybug with out of season things. In the bathroom, butterfly (because I need mornings to be quick). In the kitchen, cricket. (because I have more time in the evening, when I spend most time in the kitchen). So I think different organising styles benefits different types of routines. So if you structure your daily habits differently, you will likely need a different organising style to match. ☺ Before my closet declutter, I was very much 'shove and hide'. My laundry basket was too small, and difficult to access, so dirty laundry would also spread, and take ages to sort in colors before washing. Because there was not room to put the clean laundry, and on laundry day, I was always stressed because I also did a lot of cleaning, so I had no energy left to put it away. After the declutter, and changing my laundry day to a more peaceful day, I naturally file fold my socks and underwear, and organise my clothes into 3 capsule wardrobes (1 week each), that are neatly put away where they belong. 😅 I also invested in 2 bigger, pretty laundry baskets. They stand in the corner where I take of my clothes, and now have room for the amount of laundry I have, and I sort by colour as I put it in. In the past, I would buy a weeks worth of groceries, have to carry it home on foot (no car), and because I bought so much at a time, it would be heavy and I had no energy to put it away nicely. I had no organisation, so things would be overfilled and cluttered, and no idea what I had. After decluttering, I do it twice a week after work. I meal plan, so I know exactly what to get, and I make sure to incorporate the things I already have. This means I have to carry less, grocery trips are more enjoyable. When I get home, I have the energy to put it away nicely, and I actually have space in the cupboards to put it away nicely.
She's pretty amazing. The way she explains how someones brain correlates to how their spaces look and turn out. No shame, just explaining how "if your space looks like this then try these tips to keep tidy but also in a system you can maintain."
I don't like her as a person since she leans on ADHD for her audience. Unfortunately i feel like its regurgitated advice and nothing fresh. Sometimes she has good things to say but she really isn't the best one. I keep hoping she might come up with a fresh idea.
@marieortiz158 you know, if it's not for you, you can just walk away from it. You definitely do not have to take the time to watch things, read the comment section, and reply to things. A lot of people have ADHD, or OCD, or depression/anxiety, or are just so over-extended that at the end of the day, their brain might be just be too tired to focus on things 100%. Do let people enjoy, and go enjoy something else that is more for you
@jocelynsmyth6604 I know, but I have adhd and I feel like she shouldn't be leaning on that for her audience. She has decent information but not all if it. Just still hoping for something new.
@marieortiz158 what is it now, that she recycles information or that she relies on her ADHD for viewers? First of all her system is great so why should she come up with something new? Her content is actually quite variable, the minimal mom for example always tells you the exact same thing over and over if you watch her videos. And the ADHD thing I don't get at all, she mentions it once or twice but not that often (I didn't even know that she had it at first), and I'm sure that many people struggle with organising even if they don't have ADHD. And she doesn't even give ADHD specific tips. So idk what you mean, should she not mention it? Should she make more for ADHD? Or nothing at all? Enough people watch her that don't have ADHD, and I think it's validating to hear her talk about her struggles. I have it too and if a fellow ADHD person can be a professional organizer, I can get better at it too. I'm glad we can talk about these things nowadays.
@moongirl8807 I don't like the minimal mom. To me, they are the same person. It's funny how you guys just jump to her defense like you know her personally. My opinion is that she DOES rely on saying she has ADHD to retain her audience. Too many people on RUclips use it to gain an audience. It's insulting to those of us that actually struggle with it.
Cas, I think it's that you've adjusted to your new home, which has segmented spaces for individual items. So you're staying in theme throughout your house. I think it shows that when you didn't have that, you created it for yourself, which to me is brilliant. Love you Cas!
YES YES YES!! As I have grown up from a young mom who almost divorced before I found Flylady almost 25 yrs ago, I have slowly become the tidy organized person I always wanted to be. It's like the Atomic Habits book explains. I just started giving myself grace and improving where I could, speaking to myself about who I wanted to be, and over time I changed, my home changed, and I grew into someone who LOVES to maintain her peaceful home. Gone is the bitter martyr, welcome now to the creator of a peaceful home.
I think we have all heard that when one starts getting organized, it breeds more care and organization, partly because you have the time to do it because other things are already in order. I am looking forward to those days and you are proof positive that it is doable. Thanks for all your wisdom.
I have always been a combo, (bee/cricket) sometimes I have to leave everyday things out because of lack of space (kitchen cooking utensils), sometimes because it is my preference (hygiene in the bathroom). Embrace the combo! Your guidelines have helped me understand myself better and I have become way more organized than I used to be, thus reducing stress! Thank you!!
I’ve noticed a bit of a combination too. I don’t like clutter on the counters, BUT I need to be able to see everything in the cabinets/closets or it’s “out of sight, out of mind.” Using clear organizing drawers, bins, and containers is crucial for me and so pleasing.
I think we adapt to environment. In my totally personal spaces (translation - one drawer, one shelf), I am a Cricket, but with my Bee husband and Butterfly sons living in all the spaces, I needed to adapt. Example, we all use those electric toothbrushes that fit in NO container, and dear family HAS to have the paste and brushes ON the counter, I found a so cute cutlery bin at the dollar store with four compartments! Oh yeah! Everyone has a spot, things are contained and it's adorable! (I put it backwards on the counter and it doesn't say cutlery on the other side!) I'm happy!
In the few areas where I have really decluttered and have a specific, easy to access spot to put things away, I am finally not a pile person! I pile because it is easy but if it is easy to set in the designated spot, I will. It's been a revelation about too much stuff😂❤
For those using command strips in their bathroom, please remember to use the "Blue" strips. These are for moisture areas. If you use the regular ones, they will fall. I know this from experience. I knew better but forgot at that moment. A loud thud told me of my errors.
Since I discovered your channel and took your quiz I’ve learned that I’m usually a bee for the obvious spaces. But behind doors not so much. Behind pantry doors and drawers I’m a mix of butterfly and cricket, I think
Cas, the fact that at the very same moment that I am discovering that I'm moving from ladybug to lazy cricket, you're having this Revelation makes me so happy!
It’s called “bandwidth” learned that from your friend Dawn (the minimal mom). I’ve been changing too the more minimal I get! It’s crazy to see what can happen when you have the right amount of space for the stuff and organization in place! Embrace the new you and enjoy it 🤗 thanks for sharing!
Since my kids have moved on to college I’m definitely getting rid of more things and living with less. Seems like this phase of life has been easier to be more organized- although my husband and I were messy before kids… so it’s not just not having the kids around daily. I’ve learned to live neater and with less stuff I think! Only took 54 years 😂! Your channel and workshop has helped!!! 😊
This intro breakdown of types of organizers is maybe the most helpful thing I’ve seen on the internet this year. My partner and I moved in together almost a year ago and I am a visual & detailed organizer. Even just understanding that someone else in the world has a name for his style of [::ahem:: not what I would call….] organizing helps me reframe how I see the way he does it. Thanl you!!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 truly. Because he always says it is already organized and he can find everything he needs but I am deeply opposed to needing to shuffle through a drawer to fund anything. I’d far rather take the time to stack and unstack when I put things away whereas he finds that to be an overwhelmingly daunting task. This is not even hyperbole: you have probably just prevented at least five big arguments for 2025 as we prepare to move again - very unexpectedly - in two weeks. Moving again means a whole new organizing in new spaces. I’m also a person who has to experience and feel the stuff in the space before I can commit to how it will land whereas he wants to make a detailed furniture plan before we ever get there.
I remember Cass talked about this in another video, she said that the more detailed organizer will need to give in to the ways of the less detailed organizer, because you can’t force him to become more detailed. If he needs big see-through bins and no doors on the closets and pantry in order to put things away, then it’s probably better to do that so that you aren’t constantly cleaning up after him and resenting it. Then, if there’s a closet or bathroom that is only yours, you can detail that area as much as you want
Same! When I was growing up I had the messiest room, was misplacing things all the time, not taking care of them, and what I chose to keep and decorate was likewise all over the map. I’ve gone through a couple of different styles in both possessions and displaying / caring for them since. My mom has too, with her own homes over different decades. This is just one more facet of how we age and mature as people.
Same! My sister is even coming over soon to help me decluttering and organize paperwork. After that I’m done with the main declutter mostly and then it’s just maintenance.
@@poisonlady1965Paperwork is so time consuming. I got rid of everything I could, and sorted the rest. It took weeks beacuse I have a long medical history and also other stuff. I digitalized a lot, if I didn't need the original paper. In case it was very important I both have a digital file and the original paper. I also bought a shredder for the sensitive stuff. Even kids drawings is now mostly saved as a photo, instead of a paper. Freeing!! Best of luck to you!
@@poisonlady1965 I've mainly only gotten through my, admittedly too big for two people, kitchen but it was amazing how much stuff I had that I didn't need. Having it gone and everything else organized brings me peace. Almost empty counters! Once I tackle paperwork I'll really feel like I'm getting somewhere. Hope it goes well for you!
I love you Cas. You are just so amazing. Before discovering you and your bug cleaning ways, I was a hot mess and depressed due to the mess. Now, I’m a happy hopping cricket and my husband (the ladybug) has gotten on board with your cleaning clutter craze and he has actually started organizing the clothes hangers “Cricket Style”. I’m so excited and happy about this. Yes! You can obviously transform from one bug to another if you are around that other bug style long enough. All you flying bugs, take some time and get to know a cricket and their cleaning clutter style. We not only declutter, we clean clutter also. Ground yourself as a cricket does and embrace the art and skill to organizing your hidden mess. Happy Tidying Tuesday y’all.
I started organizing my clothing better when I lost weight. I built a drawer unit sized exactly for my closet and divided things into categories. It's also fun to get some better brands of items, which means I don't own as many things, so that helped too. I may be a Butterfly starting to realize my Cricket dreams.
@Clutterbug, I think your organizing style is evolving. It’s likely a combination of a new home, more space and the fact you have declutterred and streamlined your belongings. You have more bandwidth to organize in more detail in some areas of your home. Congratulations again on your new home and I hope there’s no more flooding. 🙏🏻
I wanted to say thank you, Cass. I have implemented so many of your tips, like the clutter-collection baskets where I tend to put things down. I'm a Bee through and through, and I never could work out why my dad would call me a hoarder when I've moved so many times that I really don't have heaps and heaps of things (I barely even own any cosmetics), yet he has, for example, four VCRs and six vacuums in his garage. YOU gave me the answer: I'm visual; he's not!! It made me feel so much better about myself. Will you ever again be doing videos of you helping other people? We miss those!
Oh my gosh! I have always maintained I’m a crickerfly! I discovered that, as I got better organized I wanted to be more organized. I want my spaces to make me breathe out and say, I feel at peace. But that only comes once you have decluttered. When you have less to organize it’s easier to organize it in a way that brings you peace - not just order.
You literally hit the nail on the head with a truth bomb - being a visual organiser but wanting to fantasise about not seeing the things - important aha moment as this conflicting thought process has made it impossible to get organised, and things stagnate. I also realise just I’m also a hidden organiser for some things ie the drawers and cupboards hide away clutter. Thank you!
I believe life’s seasons can affect your organizing style too. I am a recovering cricket 😂 but after having 3 kids 2 and under and finding your chanel I changed my ways so that I could keep up. My cricket self wanted to put everything away just right with the appropriate amount of time and stuff ended up everywhere for the first time in my life. I started macro organizing things that I was struggling with (as well as decluttering with the help from minimal mom) and it made a huge difference!
I think we do adapt over time. We are who we are but I, my bee-self, have learned to be more of a ladybug for my husband. The new place may be unleashing some cricket vibes. Why would it not? That closet is amaz-balls! And, since learning I'm a bee about 2 years ago. My bathroom has remained the most organized space in my house. Thanks for that!
I'm a bumblebug, and the bee in me loves that bath cart she was showing, and the counter caddy (I don't have a counter, or a space for a cart, but damn, I want it!) If you have any tips you really love, I'd like to hear them :)
@@jocelynsmyth6604I'm a ladybug, and I love the idea of that cart. I forget to have baths. All the bath stuff is in a bin under the sink and I forget it's there. But having the cart would stress me just looking at it. Not that I have room.
Hi Cas! You inspired me, a “Cricket” to use the Granny Says Bathroom baskets to organize my bathroom countertop😊 I was always leaving my countertop a mess because if I put it away all the time I would forget to use things I needed. Lotions, Eyedrops etc…Thanks for the tips!
The main thing that improved my bathrooms was definitely decluttering, but the second was realizing that it was ok if I preferred stuff on the counter. I just got a clear bin and put all my stuff in it, voila! Same with the kids stuff, two little containers for their toothbrushes and suddenly everything is easy to clean, it looks neat always, it's like magic. None of us were going to put our stuff away, and realizing that and accepting it was just life changing (I'm a butterfly and am pretty sure my partner is too, and my kids are young so leaving stuff out is just their nature 😂)
When you share your space with a partner, I think you both adapt your styles so you can develop a system that works for each of you but still matches the kinds of people you are. This takes time to develop and iis frustrating at times but people who are successful at building a life together do work things out. As you get older your needs change and so your systems adapt with these changes, too. The fact that you CAN make these changes means you are managing this gracefully and successfully.
I like macro categories for my bathroom and kitchen, but micro categories for my art supplies 😁😁😁 I think organizing styles can depend on how I'm relating to my items, and how much mental bandwidth I have available, and those things can change over time AND be different for different areas of my life!
I have absolutely changed my organizing style over the years! Your life evolves, whether it’s family size, house size, job demands, income or better organizing tools available. Your life has just evolved with moving into a new home. But be careful we always grown into (fill) the space that we have. Before you know it you’ll be tackling “Swedish Death Cleaning”!😮😅
My organizing system had definitely changed over the years. I was always the type that left piles of laundry on the sofa, etc, but now I'm starting to fold and put the laundry away on the same day! I think my decluttering has a lot to do with it. When you have more space to put things, it's easier to put things away.
To your comment on changing, I grew up in a hoarding home with no experience of learning how to clean or be organized. Throughout the years, my organizing and cleaning (self taught) has grown and changed! Even in the last couple of years!
I was inspired! Half way through your video I decided it was time to organize my bathroom. Ran to my local Home Goods. Got two small shelving units and a bunch of small containers I could decant into. I loved organizing it all. It looks great. Now finishing the second half of your video. Thanks so much for the inspiration 😊
I am definitely a ladybug with intermittent cricket tendencies. My makeup and jewelry drawers are full-on cricket. My hair products are totally ladybug. I do think we change with age and environment. A new, bigger house brings so many more opportunities to explore your style. Enjoy the differences!
I think when you have accepted yourself for who you are, which you've done, then you feel free to move forward and tap into your best self! Not that who we are isn't wonderful, but by accepting ourselves we feel free to move forward--into whatever direction that takes us. I'm going to be 60 and for most of my life I am sure I was a butterfly. But as I've grown older, and have accepted myself for who I am, I find a lot of cricket in me. Mostly, because cricket organization serves me well in this season of my life. I just love you, Cas. I love everything you share. Thank you for being you in every phase of life! ❤
For a teeny tiny bathroom, I used an item we had from Girl Scouts called a dunk bag. Two dish clothes are sewn together, and a string run through the top of the bag. The string easily hangs from a hook or can be grabbed quickly. Makes a great toiletries bag. (That said, I have never used a lot of makeup or skin products.) For things like routine medications, I have them in plastic baggies, which are in one of those fabric square boxes you can buy from Dollar Tree (look for the $3, not the $5 ones). I started this when I had to start staying overnight at my mom's house on the fly. It makes it easy for my husband to grab my meds and get them to me, but also simplifies my daily routine a lot. I want to make colored fabric bags, so I can tell morning meds from evening meds without actually having to look at the bottles, because my box is under the sink where it is dark.
Regarding changing organizing styles, I can relate. I was a super detailed, hidden, micro organizer before having kids. After kids, I am still a hidden organizer, but much more macro. I just don’t have the brain capacity to be as detailed anymore. Also, I’ve learned that I can’t stand visual clutter, but I don’t remember what I have if it’s tucked away, so I’ve had to reduce my inventory greatly so when I open a drawer, cabinet or closet, I can easily assess what I have. Labels help a lot too! Moving into a new house in a few months and am getting a lot of good advice from your recent content! Thanks for all you share!
YAY! Welcome to the cricket family! I am inherently a cricket but when I started my organizing journey it was because the overwhelm of my hoard had become too much and to start I had to recognize that everything will not be perfect in the beginning, I just had to start. When I started I had to give myself the grace to put things in larger categories (macro organizing) just to get the ball rolling. After doing this for about 6 years I have found out that while I enjoy things hidden....I actually want them to be visual when I open a door/drawer/closet. So my pantry is full of clear organizers because then I can see when I need to buy more of something without having to open things to check. I almost think that the organization can kind of change from room to room. Maybe it is because of your new house...or maybe it is because you keep decluttering and finding more time and detailed organization is becoming easier. Either way, as long as you're loving it, it's good!!!! Btw I've been sooo busy that I haven't been watching much lately but is there a season 3 Hot Mess House coming???
Yes, I totally think it's possible for your style to shift or morph at least a bit. You and I have talked a few times about my style and you've consistently pegged me as a bee as opposed to a cricket. While I see more and more that this is true (for example, when you talked about whether you put the stuff you use daily in the bathroom away after use or not, I realized that, although it's neat, it has to be out or I don't use it) I can also see places where I'm changing. I used to have a huge wall of floor to ceiling bookshelves in a previous space and didn't mind that all the books were visible. Now, I find I like to have memorabilia visible in little vignettes and put books away behind a closed door because the visual clutter was getting oppressive. I've also reduced the amount of things out on my kitchen counters and like the calmer feeling it brings. It's still not empty or sterile but it isn't chaotic and doesn't attract nearly as much random clutter. Is it age/maturity? Lack of space? Experience gained with working with people in my niche (the chronically disorganized and small space living)? Who knows? But it's interesting.
I think you can change your organizing style over time. I used to be very detailed and a perfectionist and it eventually became exhausting for me. My husband is much more laid back. So between helping him organize the garage and watching so many of your videos, I have become much more relaxed and more of a macro organizer. I love being able to just toss things in a bin. I still do some detailed organizing like decanting pantry staples. But overall, I’m much more relaxed and laid back. It has made life so much easier. Thank you Cas! I love you ❤️
Hi Cas! I just started watching you with the last All Day Declutter. The three things that I have noticed have made the biggest shift for me that You taught me are 1) Do the dishes every night... "Don't you dare leave that mess for future Kerri to deal with!" 2) It needs to be just as easy to put things away as it is to lay them down where they don't belong, and 3) 5 minutes of clutter control/day. I'm a butterfly, and thankfully live alone, so don't have to deal with others' mess! I get to say what stays and leaves, and how I choose to organize my space. Such a blessing! Thank You!
??? I have been on my declutter journey with you for months now and my home is really coming together, tidier, cleaner and making my happiness shine through. I have discovered though, that a couple of places I thought I had organized and decluttered are now messy again. I think this must mean that I must not of organized them well the first time around. Two areas are my desk and pantry. Could you do a video on reasons why we may experience clutter creep in areas previously decluttered and organized, and suggestions for reorganizing so that it stops happening?
It may be a drop zone as well...shes also made videos mentioning this...i have a spot that wont stay clean and clear and figured out that its my "drop zone"
I know my organizing style has changed; unfortunately not for the good! I was always organized but now that I’m older (retired), I’m a hot mess!! I moved and downsized but brought everything but the kitchen sink. Now I just need to go through it all. Although I think my boxes have become hugs for me because I don’t want to get rid of them. Lol. Working on it now that I found your wonderful videos that have motivated me, just not quite enough yet but working on it. Thanks for your non judge mental way of encouragement!
My style has somewhat changed over the years. I've moved about 15 times. It's taught me to be flexible. Depending on space and money has usually been the difference in how I organize. Also it changed as my kids grew (grown and flown) now. I'm definitely a detailed hidden organizer, but there are areas over the years that I didn't organize that way. When we add new things (like supplements) as we age, the medicine cabinet now requires more space. My family medicine box /first aid kit has always been like the one you showed. However, the extra supplies to refill it in the linen closet are detail organized. The books on my bookshelf are organized by catagories. At one time they were just on the shelf somewhat with like catagories together. I limit myself to the two large double bookcases in the dining room and the small one in my bedroom. If I run out of space then it's time to donate some books. I prefer holding a real book...I have three kindles. I'm really trying to adapt to digital reading. 😳🤪
I never thought that I could give up physical books but it’s been about 3 years now since I’ve read one! I love my Kindle and am on my 3rd one. I am an avid reader and very rarely read anything twice. I have a very small collection (maybe 15) of favorite books and that’s it. I read very quickly so have never been able to justify buying books. I get all of my books the same way I always have, from the library, but now they are in ebook form!
Changing organizing style, yes! I think the space you live in makes a difference. One year I was a cricket! For a whole year. I put everything away neatly every single day (I even flossed every. Single. Day! I wish I could be a cricket again, but with work, kids, family, carpooling,. Everything… I’m a butterbee.
Love all of this and I am so happy you are excited for your new home so maybe you have more capacity and motivation. You were patient and now you deserve the joy for sure♥️
I am 100% cricket but my fiance, whom I live with, is butterfly to the bone. In order for us to reach a comprise that works for us both our condo looks very ladybug. I get to avoid the anxiety of having to see everything everywhere & he doesn't have to fuss with a complex organizational system.
I’ve changed over the years First a detailed hidden(single life), then a macro visual (little kid life) then just eegh 🤪 (moving to much life for 3 years) then bought house with no storage in some spaces with older children (yrs 8,10,12) and we have been Decluttering and organizing per our life style not our personal “bug” style and it’s working! Some rooms have two “bugs” others have one… but it’s working… Thanks 🙏
I believe I used to be a bee. But since I've been arranging a house that I bought in February, I realize I am a CRICKET!! I have absolutely embraced drawer dividers and organizers. In my guest bathroom I have 4 bins in the cabinet and each of them have a set of color coordinated bath, hand, washcloth towels. My kitchen cabinets are so organized it's amazing to me. My clothes closet makes more sense than it ever has before. What I've realized is that since I've slowly moved my stuff into my home from storage units, I am taking the time to arrange everything the way that works for me. I never had that option before when I had a whole family living with me. (The last time I moved was 27 years ago.) I have to tell you that without your guides for HOW TO organize that makes sense, I might have just dumped everything the way I used to, but this home is organized and I feel so relaxed here.
I totally relate with you, Cas, about the ending comments. I did not care much how things looked before. My counters were full, I only looked for the functional. The process for me began after our house went through a major remodel when we flooded with hurricane Harvey in 2017. Then, my eyes turned to the pretty, not functional only. Then, I joined Clutterbug and now I want to see my pretty counters, I care about matching baskets, I organize the cooking books and highlighters in rainbow colors, I decant my most used spices and they look so pretty in a drawer. I never thought in a million years that I would be this kind of person. I am cricket/ladybug. I think the love for your new home (in my case, my new home after a major remodel), makes you crave for the beauty too. Yes for more mental space to deal with the beauty (it is like I was blind before), eyes opened for the beauty. Go for it! Enjoy your cricketing!
I just found out your channel. You totally changed my attitude about cleaning. I used to get so mad because my husband is so messy, so I find myself feeling annoyed because I do all the cleaning. In your video you mentioned that having a clean space/house to live is a gift to myself and you are right! I was instantly inspired by you. Thanks!!
Cas! I was trying to get control of my bathroom after I’ve been sick, when I saw this video, and, “ding-ding-ding!!!” I needed that suggestion for the two-tiered shelf for the bathroom counter. I already use a basket, but it’s always hard to clean because my husband and I are so messy. And yes my clutterbug style has definitely changed!
I am a butterfly, and I have a TINY bathroom, I mean tiny! There is only room for the bath down one wall, then the toilet, then the sink against the other wall. But I get what you are saying about getting "stuff" off the surfaces! So am getting some of those self adhesive shelves for my walls, to put things in. Thank you for all your wonderful ideas, to make our lives clutter free! Oh, by the way, I bought a second hand (I love World Of Books for second hand books) It's All Too Much" by Peter Walsh book, and it is GREAT. Thank you for recommending that too. Love and hugs from Jilly & Madge the black rescue greyhound, from a wet and windy North Devon, England. xxx
Hi, I decided to change my organizing style, because I noticed how stressful my old style was for me. Being a much more microorganizing person that puts their stuff away every time suits me so much better. Smile thank you
I went from a full blown 100% cricket closed doors non see-through pretty containers micro organization. To a bee with the hidden stuff in clear acrylic bins so it's easy to spot as soon as those cupboard doors are open in the bathroom. A combo ladybug with a little cricket in my kitchen and bedroom. I'm still a full cricket in my office. My living room is butterfly ladybug. The biggest transformation was the acrylic containers in the bathroom and kitchen, I never thought I needed them or had the time to keep them looking aesthetically pleasing. This is what decluttering my home removing the just incase items and unessary years of buying crap I don't need or use has done. Still trying to figure out my style for the garage 😄
Ooooh I love this concept of your content… ideas for specific issues for SPECIFIC organizing styles! So applicable and easy to use! Way to go Cass for reading your audience so perfectly! 🎉
I feel like when I'm feeling good (health-wise), I have been excited about going through my house and making sure that everything has a home. This is new for me, but I'm going with it. ( Health issues for 10+ years, so I'll have to try to keep this going)!!
Great tips as always! We keep our hamper in the laundry roo...we take our dirty clothes downstairs after our showers. As always, Thank you for sharing your organizational tips! Stay safe, healthy, and positive! God bless you and your family!🙏❤️🇺🇸😊
I hate decanting but it has helped me in so many ways that I keep doing it. So don't miscount the fact that you can always change, especially if something is having a positive effect on you. I also hate folding laundry and putting it away but a while back out of the blue I felt like micro organizing all my clothes drawers and I have managed to stick to it and it's wonderful! I feel like decluttering has helped me grow as a person and yes, I do have my shit together, as you have said 🙂
I have *absolutely* seen my organization style changing. After experiencing the fogginess of chemo brain and now getting into (just!) my senior years I find that as soon as I close the door on anything I no longer remember I have it. OK, maybe a slight exaggeration here but not by much. Clear bins are a must and I find I'm leaving more and more items out on the counter. Senior mobility issues also mean a need to minimize steps so daily cooking ingredients stay stove-side now and it gets harder and harder to reach to the back of lower cabinets so items need to move forward and stay in well-lighted sight. Maybe it's time to do an episode for the Boomers, Cas.
I keep bottles of my meds in three different places to save steps (and pain). Keep in mind, though, that some actions like reaching for things are helping your mobility, so think carefully about just how much changing where things are will help or hinder you.
I think we've "solved" the lower cabinet issue. We use a bin inside the cabinet. When we need something from the lower cabinet, we grab hold of the bin, pull it out like it was a drawer, get what we need then push it back in. If we were living in our own home, instead of a rental, I would retrofit the lower cabinets with drawer inserts.
Confuzzled! 😂 You are such a joy to listen to!
Thank you! I think you may be right, my desire for pretty spaces is overpowering my Ladybug tendencies sometimes!
As our children grow we do have more minutes!
@@ClutterbugI'm so happy for you. You're proud of your new place and your new behavior shows gratitude for what you have. When we work hard to get nice things we take care of them. May God bless your new home with lots of health, peace and joy ❤
I have become more visual after being married for 30 years to a visual guy, but I am still detailed and he is not.
Sme same same!!! The acceptance!! I swear it’s gonna save us at least five fights in 2024 😂😂🙏🏻🙏🏻😉😮💨😮💨
i redid my bathroom in a video as soon as i saw this ,no way as good as her but i was truly so inspired had to do it
I think our organizing styles can change depending on what season of life we are in.
Yes, I agree!!
Absolutely! Also the space alot of time dictates the style that has to be used. Try having a tiny bathroom with no good hidden storage!!!
Agree
I am a cricket. My family is all butterflies. The spaces we share, I make the systems for them. I have come to appreciate fast and easy systems. I find myself sticking to easy butterfly systems. I still am a cricket in many ways (I still HAVE to organize my file cabinet in a cricket way), but for everyday stuff, I like the butterfly way of doing things. So I can totally see someone's organizing style changing or being different for different seasons of life.
Love how your hubby peeked out at you...turned and walked away!! LOL!! Love it! Great Video!!!
There were a lot of neuros in that comment. I’m confused!
@@debbieversteeg2407 I only see two, unless you meant to respond to something else?
Yes! She did this absolutely perfectly!! I’ve definitely gotten super ok with accepting myself. But moving in with a partner who is nearly opposite has been so challenging and the way she did this has helped me realize we are just. Different with no judgement. And truly, the only system that will ever work is the one that will get used.
@@stellacalder5023well, I've never been diagnosed with anything and my life will also never look like a neurotypical person's either 😅
Hamper in each bathroom has been a game changer. Definitely recommend.
You finally have the space to do so. It makes the difference!!
So glad that someone has noticed a shift in there storage/maintenance style.
For me, the more out of sight, the better. I just function better w/less visual clutter. Thank you for these tips! Love it!
Same, but shoving my clutter behind closed doors STILL gets to me. My husband cannot fathom why it bothers me so much to KNOW that there is still a mess. 😅
Me too!! My hubby doesn't understand why I can't just shove in a drawer or closet
Same here.
I find that your space can dictate your organizing style you have to work with what you've got, and if it's really limiting on options then you can't really organize in a way that works best for you. So if your environment changes and you now have enough space to embrace your style needs, it makes a huge difference.
A get ready box! This is BRILLIANT for my daughter! Thank you!
I think it is the house. You are clearly just house proud and your style is evolving around that! 😊
visual organizer here, thank you so very much for helping me.
Yes, as we get older or move through different life stages, I think our "styles" change. For me, as my kids are growing up and more independent, I have more mental capacity to care about more detailed organizing. I'm sure your new house has an influence on you too. It's beautiful! 😍
you nailed it....having the space to assign a home for something makes it much easier to be organized...
I know this is controversial, but I actually think that, rather than everyone having one organising style, it is the space that determines what organising style suits this part of the house. Hear me out:
- Lots of time on your hands: micro organisation is ideal
- Less time on your hands: macro organisation is ideal
- High mental/physical energy in general: visual organisation is ideal
- Low mental/physical energy in general: hidden organisation is ideal
- And the key to all of it: Declutter to the point that you actually have room for a functional space. ☺
It is not so much that people are one specific organising style; it is more that different organising styles fit different areas of the house/life.
Before my closet declutter, I was very much 'shove and hide'.
You are so loved…you almost have 1 million subscribers!!! You have come so far! Thanks for helping us all overcome our hot messes!
Yes, the older I get the more I get rid of and the more organized I am and stay so I think you definitely can change.
I agree totally, the older I get the more organized I am.
I've been eliminating a crazy amount of stuff since discovering your channel. Thank you! Clutter is so stressful that I personally can't function.
Eliminate not de clutter. Sick of the D word. Eliminate!!!❤
Same! My sister is even coming over soon to help me decluttering and organize paperwork. After that I’m done with the main declutter mostly and then it’s just maintenance.
@@poisonlady1965 eliminate! Not declutter. Thar word sounds like you're just churning the stuff.
I think this reflects a “growth mindset” !
Bug hybrids are the result of adaptation...you hit the nail on the head!! 🐞🦗😉🐝🦋 Great video too!! ❤
I'm thrilled to hear this! Congratulations!
I'm a bumblebug, and the bee in me loves that bath cart she was showing, and the counter caddy (I don't have a counter, or a space for a cart, but damn, I want it!)
If you have any tips you really love, I'd like to hear them :)
@@jocelynsmyth6604I'm a ladybug, and I love the idea of that cart. I forget to have baths. All the bath stuff is in a bin under the sink and I forget it's there. But having the cart would stress me just looking at it. Not that I have room.
You really care about us. Thank you for the great tips.
You are so welcome!
I think that you set it up to be organized the way you live and behave & now it's comfortable to keep it that way.
Love it!!
I SO appreciate your honesty!! Yes I am inspired but I also don’t feel pressured to have a perfectly put together home. Thank you 🙏
I think you can change your organizing style over time.
This is SUCH A great idea!! Thank you, I WILL make this video!
@@katzimmerman4584 maybe I'll eventually cross over. I have been aiming to check out the libraries ebooks. I just tend to be slow with change.
Love the 'kit' idea! Brilliant. Having space makes does make a difference.
OBSESSED with the get ready bin, that is SUCH a fantastic solution to a common problem!
Smile thank you
Love this! I am 100% a visual organizer, so glad to be validated.
You didn’t change your way, you just changed your house! ❤️
Cass your insight on organization style makes me look forward to your new organization decanting, boots, etc.
