Phra Dan (Bhante Dhammarakkhita, Bhikkhu) is a Theravada Buddhist Monk who lived in India from 2020, Thailand and now Sri Lanka. Born in Sussex, England in 1967. Educated by French Catholic Monks. A successful businessman in Estate Agency and Financial Services during the 1980's and 90's. Married, now divorced with 3 adult sons. 2000 marked change and travel including South Africa returning to the UK in 2003 to continue different work and business activities until 2012. Gradually materialistic values turned to renunciation, simplicity and meditation, living nomadically in an old Ford Transit van full time for 3 years. Van life and meditation led to Buddhism and a Thai Forest Tradition, Theravada Buddhist Monastery in the UK. During 2015 travelling the Buddhist Holy Sites of India, deep faith reinforced desire for Ordination. In 2020 after 5 years of intensive meditation practice between Thai Forest Monasteries in Thailand and England he was Ordained in India where he lived for 3 years until returning to Thailand in 2023 and now Sri Lanka.

@@englishmonk "Sukhi Hontu" is a phrase in Pali, a language that is often used in the context of Theravada Buddhism. The phrase translates to "May you be well and happy" or simply "Be happy" in English. It is a common expression used to wish well-being and happiness to others.
In a broader sense, it reflects the Buddhist practice of spreading loving-kindness and compassion, often used in meditation practices and as a part of daily interactions among practitioners and communities.

Phra Dan, you continue to be an inspiration.
I was wondering if you could share your insight on one of the shorter Connected Discourses, Ogha-tarana Sutta: Crossing over the Flood. It's one that has resonated with me for months now, and on some level I feel I understand what it is getting at - but I am hoping some outside input could help bring clarity, or dispel doubt.

To the one wanting to get into sleeping in the floor. I recommend a short routine, also very good for meditator's leg. Malasana and breath mantra lam. Ustrasana, raise with hinge and genital power, breath mantra vam. Bhujangasana, ram. Anahatasana, yam. Svanasana, color is teal, tham. Marjariasana with ham. Balasana with om. Then assume Savasana or other perfected sleeping position. However, I am not allowed to reveal the secret pillow folding of a thousand petal lotus. It is too powerful. So for that, you need Tantric Initiation. The myth is that it can only be received from visions in deep meditation. It is most auspicious and highly equinimity.

I started at 35. To the person that started at 42. I wouldn't worry too much about thoughts or patterns. The best friend, the atomic bomb you have in your arsenal is meditation. Think of the brain as a large suitcase. Everything has been packed on one side. So the suitcase is hard to carry. What meditation does is distribute the weight in your mind so it is easier to carry. As far as reactions or patterns just make a quick mental note of any reactions you catch. Then before meditation you take a quick look at the day. Note behavior. You dont have to mentally change anything at this point. Then meditate on your object. As the days go by it will become easier to change. Try to think of what Bhante says as a medical prescription and take the actions, In other words its good to look at yourself but dont stare.

@@noonespecial4171 thanks friend, But what is really odd to me is that everything I live by has been taught to me by others. I have not come up with any good ideas on my own. If I think about it my whole life right now is solely based on the advice of wiser people. Now I did live life under my own ideas and boy what a mess, a hell, a horror. I guess that is the blessing. That anyone that wants this can have it, no blocks based.

Just seeing this, I asked the question, thanks for your response. I've been meditating consistently since January this year ( I had been meditating before that but not as consistently). I have noticed that I've been able to soften a lot more and open up, whereas before I had a hard shell and have been stubborn about ideas/beliefs. I can see the practice sort of loosening up these Khaleesis (spelling?) and breaking them apart like washing off caked on grease from a pan. It takes time.

Bhante a long question but no short way to describe it.
I have isolated myself so much from people, as my family died and pets and know virtually no one anymore, and while this has enabled me to practice well, I have no community and as someone mentioned recently in your comments, online Buddhist communities are very far from welcoming so I found myself on Facebook again. I can feel this sensation in the heart area of a kind of loneliness and with my practice have attempted to connect with others there however have only found myself floating adrift in a sea of the worldly winds and regressing back to the social conditioning while on Facebook and later when off it, I'm back to practice and wondering why I keep going there to connect when I know it's the complete opposite of the practice. I know it's all Dhamma however the kilesas as SO natural I find myself as if asleep when online but awake and aware when not. Would you please talk about how to cultivate disenchantment when I know it is completely unsatisfying yet am repeating the pattern? I'm aware but it's as if I become unconscious and later wonder why it happened again.
You are practising alone and I'm sure you dealt with the same or similar. Any guidance here as to how to be with the lack of community and, not go to one (Facebook) that I know full well is detrimental. Thank you so much Bhante, your being here has helped me so much your example and commitment. 🙏

I relate to everything you say and it took a lot of courage to say it. Thank you so much. For myself ( not a hint at you) I think people do not like me. Its just a conditioned thing that I have not been able to let go of. It is very hard to get out and socialize. But I found that even three hours a week volunteering is a big help. Isolation is really the lack of true engagement. Unfortunately online engagement does not provide fulfillment or engagement. I also went to see a therapist and I see her and talk about whatever I want. Buddhism, projects, my life. She also suggests things and keeps me centered when I wander off into make believe. Depression, loneliness is no joke and after covid a lot of people really feel lonely. You are not alone. Do consider seeking some help for loneliness. Im willing to bet there are a lot of lonely people even in this group. I stand with you.

@@lonewolf4111 I think people don't like me either. I donate and help people but no one sees but them, I do things very quietly and in this world if you are not out there visible and 'marking your spot like an animal' people think you are weak or something. Its gotten so that if you don't try to stand out, you are no one and its like some dark shadow as my mind always says its better to share and connect where everyone gets along and no one is left out, I think it may be a childish belief from early years. I'm working on it and I'm sorry you too experience similar. Blessings to you.

@@fingerprint5511 If you are like me, you dont think people like you: becoming popular is the worst thing that can happen. Because no matter how good you are it will never be good enough.Based on your own belief. It sounds to me like you might be depressed. Only you know if you are. I have been doing this awhile and when I retired I got very depressed. Everyone is different but for me I needed someone to talk to and I went to a therapist. I could not get out of it by myself.

Bhante, I have 2 separate questions, how do you pick up a monastery to become a monk? I know some monasteries do a lot of chanting and less meditation, how do you know which one practices more meditation and Dhamma talks ? Do I need to keep visiting some until I find the right fit? Any recommendations? Also is there a difference between monasteries in the east and the west? I live in the States and am not sure where to start.❤
2nd what meditation do you practice? Anapana meditation or Vipassana ( body sensations scan) ? Do they teach you in monasteries how to meditate?
    ❤❤❤

One time someone touched my skin, I asked them to stop touching "me". Later I got a wound there, the part of the skin where they touched was gone. But I, and most people I would claim, say: Don't touch "me". I just think that is funny. It kind of is like the time I meditated and heard someone was snoring.

@@Frooji-ps1xk Yeah I think you have both something that can imperfectly be called anatman and atman. However, there was a time everyone insisted that there was only atman, this is even worse. Now you can not explain how someone touching you gently on the knee is touching you. Because I ran and fell over and scrubbed the skin off. You get it? I am in deep meditation, I am still aware, someone is snoring! Who is snoring???
