Reason #11: health issues causing weak hair like thyroid, low iron, etc. I can speak from personal experience that this is a huge factor, though one that has solutions too. I only mention this because it can be so discouraging for women who truly do everything they can take care of their hair and still get breakage.

I have low iron, I take care of my hair, stop using heat two years ago, I follow a lot of of steps of curly hair, I take vitamins and supplements and still my hair is not growing fast and completely beautiful as all the hairs in the journal hair I saw, it's sometimes so hard but I keep doing it because I dream with a beautiful hair

Girl SAME! The crazy part is, I've been seeing the same stylist for about 8 years and she has curly hair too yet she still doesn't ever get my cut right and don't even get me started on when she tried to style of curly before I leave after a cut/color. Oh lawwwd. But....she's hands down the best with color I've ever found so I always end up going back to her. The cuts aren't awful they just aren't what i feel I need. Unfortunately no other stylists I've tried, and there have been many, have been able to do any better. Curly girl struggles!

I’m 47 but I am about 30% gray - no longer covering my “silver.” I have noticed that the grays are wirey and strange, don’t play well with the other hair. This is hilarious and completely coincidental. I've watching hair videos for the past hour and I literally watched a video before yours by a professional that highly discouraged detangling the hair while wet as it is in it's most fragile state. You suggest that it be done wet because it will reduce breakage. I love the way your hair looks... so I will continue detangling on wet conditioned hair. Thank you and your seester so much for all your information and taking the time to make these videos! ❤❤

    1. Very dry and brittle
    •moisturize it
    2. Over processed
•buy professional salon products to care for your hair at home
    3. Too much protein
•use it according to your hairs needs (immediately after coloring and processing)
    4. Super tight ponytails
•use it less often, use a less damaging hair tie
    5. Super tight braids on wet hair
•use a leave in conditioner and super moisturized and blow dry it before braiding
    6. Putting handbag strap on your shoulder which pulls on your hair
•move your hair so your hair isn’t caught on your bag
    7. Detangling hair when it’s dry
•use a detailing spray/ detangle it damp AND start from your ends and work your way up to the root
    8. Sleep on a cotton pillowcase
    •sleep on silk/satin pillowcase
    9. Playing with your split ends/ single strand knots and ripping them out
•get it them professionally cut OR don’t mess with them
    10. Genes cause naturally thin hair

    1. Very dry and brill : condition hair more
    2. Overporciessed (Bleached, coloring) : take professional quality products ie leave in protein treatment)
    3. Giving your hair way too much protein : Use protein in small doses unless after color processing
    4. Tightening hair too tightly
    5. Tight braiding on wet hair . Hair is fragile when wet and more stretched. : Use leave in conditioner ; blow dry before braiding
    6. Hair against bad strap : move your hair befor you put your bag on your shoulder
    7. Detangling hair when dry : invest in detangling spray
    8. Sleep on cotton pillow case : sleep in satin silky material
    9. Play with split ends : don’t touch your hair
    10. Genes 🧬

I just had a shower and washed my hair, i put my conditioner into my hair and started removing the knots, and so much hair started falling out and snapping, i started having a massive melt down because my hair has become so thin lately, i have almost half of the amount of hair that i had 2 months ago, while having my meltdown in the shower, i pick up my conditioner...."brazilain keratin treatment".
Im so mad at myself, i thought the conditioner was actually going to help my extreme hair loss and breakage, but its actually made it so much worse.

Like, when you wash your hair everyday you strip off natural oils and make it fragile and it's the worst case for me as being a curly girl who lives in Korea (the place where summer humidity hits people). Also another common reason ur getting breakage and excessive shedding.... UR NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER. U can moisturise ur hair as much as u want by conditioning and adding products and quitting sulfates but ur diet and what u feed ur hair from the inside matters just as much. Ur simple solution might just be drinking 2 litres of water per day. Give it a month and I promise u will see a difference ❤️

I love how informative your videos are! I'm a new subscriber due to that! I have a question I can't find the answer to, and it ties in with this video. How do I know what "too much" protein is? I've read in some sites to avoid it except for the occasional protein treatment, yet since I've started reading labels on all my hair products, a LOT of my stuff has some sort of protein in it somewhere, especially shampoo, conditioners, and co-washes. Is it ok to use these daily, assuming they aren't geared toward "reconstruction" or considered to be for those in need of protein? Or do I need to avoid these as much as possible?
And (sorry), but as a follow up to all that, IF I need to try to avoid, then what quality protein free products would you recommend, especially for conditioners??

Lovely video😊I have been growing out my hair for two years (trimmed it a year ago so that's overdue) and I noticed since my hair is in box braids there are a lot of tiny hairs sticking up. Could these be new hairs growing in or major breakage?

    • @ManesByMell
      @ManesByMell  6 лет назад

Hey girl! I hate to tell you that box braids cause MAJOR damage. It’s funny cuz box braids are known to be “protective styles” but there is nothing healthier than just leaving your hair in its natural state, giving it lots of moisture, and a little bit of protein. The little hairs you are seeing are most likely due to damage, due to breakage and fall out from the braids. I hope this helps (and didn’t scare you too much LOL) just be sure to take them out as soon as possible and get a good trim 😃❤️

Manes By Mell oh dang... I just wanted my hair out of the way while I'm on vacation, it's scorching hot lol. I thought I would have less breakage as my hair was detangled and had a moisturizer in it(no extensions just my own hair), but I'll take them out when I have the time. And I'll try to cautiously do a protein treatment as I'm protein sensitive. Thanks for the reply!

Omg well I guess I’m triple screwed. I’ve been natural for almost 6 years and haven’t straightened my hair once since. I deep condition weekly on wash day and NEVER use sulfates parabens or silicones. I try to only use the most natural and moisturizing products I can find yet my hair still seems to be very temperamental. I’ve helped many curly peeps giving advice from my own aquired knowledge over the years but still struggle with my own (some days). My hair is naturally very fine and very dry (white mom+ creole dad) I may have to start finger coiling because (most days) I use my spray bottle to saturate my strands, add more product, finger detangle and air dry. So I’m sure that itself causes breakage. I also have a confession...........I HATE single strand knots and I’ve been better about it lately but when I don’t have my handy shears with me, I will pull out the strand from the follicle. SOOO BAD! 😕 lol I know I should just be dusting right above the knot AND I wear my bag on my shoulder but always make sure I lift my hair first. Lmao I think since I watched this I’m lot going to anymore regardless. 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

Hey Megan thanks for the comment! Any damage you've done sounds like it can be undone so no fear! Everyone has wonky hair days sometimes! Having a balance of protein and moisture, two things our hair needs, is key. You should finger coil it really helps with definition, I never have to refresh! I just sleep with my bonnet/scarf and I'm good. I hope this helps, thank you for watching xoxo

I straightened my hair about three times a week, every week all of last year. Last December, i stopped and did the big chop. I deep condition my hair about twice a month, sometimes just once. But im still noticing a lot of breakage and split ends. Also my hair is extremely unmanageable.

Please help. My hair has always been my pride and joy. I figured since it is pretty damn healthy, it could deal with some bleach damage. And I figured the master stylist who did all the color-corrections would know how much would be too much. I was wrong, and now I want to burst into tears every time I look at my hair or touch it. I just don't know what to do. My hair has also NEVER been shorter than this and it breaks and falls out. What should I do to regrow hair?

The other thing with the shoulder bag is when they pull it out. Ugh! If your bag is on your hair, LIFT UP THE BAG, then gently move your hair. I am not a hairdresser but I do know this.

Girl, yes! I think for far too long I didn't know how to work with my hair so I would often ended up putting it up. I think all of that with a regular hair tie caused breakage around the hair line just like you mentioned. Now I am trying to learn more and be more mindful about how to care for my waves/curls. But it also means waiting for those breakage pieces to grow back..so right now it looks like surface/crown frizz I can't control

I don’t have damaged hair.. but have horrible halo frizz. I joined a CGM group who told me that my low porosity hair was high porosity & damaged & needed protein. So I did a treatment.
I took a strand to do the test.. Went to wrap around my fingers to pull on & it broke before I could even test it.
I’ve been doing deep conditioning since the protein treatment.. but maybe not enlist at the roots?
Someone help me!!! My hair is breaking so bad every day now 😩😩

    Hi Mell,
I just watched this video and a fun factor happened...I have my hair tied on 2 ponytails and once the video reach the part were you talk about stranding the hair, I felt so bad that I started to remove the ponytails, tied the hair with bobby pins and just ordered invisiblobble online. Thanks for the tips!

I tried an invisibobble but its elastic becomes loose. If I am in the gym, my hair becomes loose as I exercise and I have to tie it again and again. I have given up on it for now.

I’m so glad I found your channel! I’ve been retraining my curls for about a year and a half now and have been finding out what works for my hair. But it’s a learning curve. I was wondering if you know if being vegan and occasionally not getting enough protein can affect how much protein my hair produces? Therefore causing breakage...

Hey girl! I’m not sure if you watched this video already but I do have a day 2 refresh here’s the link: HOW I REFRESH MY CURLY HAIR WITH NO HEAT OR FRIZZ ruclips.net/video/rEmqLS_vcJM/видео.html if that doesn’t help also try watching my morning curly hair routine video to follow. If this is a problem you are constantly dealing with that it may be an issue with the way you are sleeping. Do you sleep with a silk or satin bonnet / pillow case? This Will help you with frizz! You can find the link to the one I use in my morning curly hair routine. Hope this helps 😘

Also think about when you sit. I have hair down to my mid-thigh, so I alway have to keep in mind what can happen to my hair when sitting (especially on the toilet, lol). But really, you should alway be aware of the surfaces your hair comes in contact with, and the majority of fabrics used on furniture are the worse, most grab at your hair.

@manesbymell OMG the beggining of this video was ME! And I don't color or blow dry chemically treat, no ponies, over process, etc. Ok failed the elasticity test. Can I blow dry or straighten it if I can heal the damage and use a heat protectant or am I destined to forever air dry? And why does my hair get very thin the longer it gets? AND I FOLLOW all these tips yet my hair is still F-d. I think it's genetics. I'M REASON #10!!! HELP ME PLEASE!!! I LOVE YOU!

The ponytail issue: I am a dancer and need my hair to stay up, bc it´s super heavy, so I do a super super tight ponytail (it still ends up falling after a few minutes) and I feel it breaking my hair, plus my scalp hurts after a while. I do use the kind of hair tie you showed in this video, but it´s still a problem. Do you have any tips please?

What can cause over protein is adding it externally with products... But if you need to add a lot externally it may be that you lack it internally -here it will regulate by itself-. Maybe try reducing the products with protein and just increase the part you are eating - I said it may be, if you are good on protein intakes and have generally enough it may be something else.
Also looking at the food used for protein, if you are on a vegan/vegatarian doet particularly you might lack some nutrients brought by meat -and yes you can find then elsewhere but with meat you have them altogether, here not and I'm not saying to eat meat/animal product again just that it can be it and maybe increase the intake of the other food giving you the other nutrients.
Side note : Even when eating meat if you are not eating red meat you can lack iron for instance...
Anyway. Nutrient involved in hair as well as hydration : Look at your intake with food and water.
