I did this swap back in 1982. I put a 4-53 in a 1972 F-250 4x4 Highboy. I used the stock 4 speed and an overdrive that was direct and 30% over. It worked great. Had 8 speeds. I sure wish I still had it. You guys are going to love your truck.
What did you use for a bellhousing? Did you notice it being harder to drive afterward? Just curious because I have the exact same truck, but it has no engine. Wondering what is needed to swap a Detroit in.
As I recall, we used an SAE no.3 bellhousing. It mated to a 2 speed auxilliary trans that was direct and 30 % over. As I recall, it was called a Ranger overdrive. I think the bell housing had a GM bolt pattern so it matched up with the Chevy/GMC pattern on the aux box. The back end of the aux box bolted directly to the NP435 main box. We may have told the Overdrive manufacturer to make the back end with the Ford bolt spacing, I can't remember but that seems logical. Of course that slid the main box back about 4-5 inches but we just enlarged the hole in the floor pan and covered the front part of the hole with a plate and bent the shifter a bit. The aux box was shifted with a cable that attached to the shifter. Because the main box and the T-case are divorced in those Fords, we had a drive line shop shorten the shaft between the main box and the T-case to fit; it was basically two U-joints, back to back. The truck drove great after the install even without power steering. I used it for a service truck, I was logging at the time. Sure wish I still had it. Oh, if you do this swap, use a lot of sound proofing; it's real noisy without it.
@@charlesnash2748 Thanks for the detailed response! I have a line on a 3-53 Detroit (just an engine) and a ford 460 with a zf 5 speed and the t case that went with it, but I'm torn on which way to go. I would love to have the tire burning ability of the 460 but don't really need it. Mainly this truck is going to be off road rig at around 7,000 to 10,000ft of altitude. The transmission on the truck is a NP435 with a dana 21 t case. I don't think the dana is a good option because it is weak, and it has no low range. I am planning on a full frame off resto mod on this truck so sound proofing the cab will be necessary. I haven't seen a zf 5 speed on a Detroit, but I wonder if it is a possibility? Or would it be better to stick with the setup you went with? Which way do you think I should go? Thanks!
This is quite a coincidence. Before installing the 4-53 in my '72, I had run a 460 in it. I used a bellhousing from a Cobra Jet Mustang to mate the Ford big block to the NP435. It all worked great. That truck with the 4:10 gears would go from 0 to 100 in 3rd gear without even shifting. I have always thought NP 435's were pretty tough. If the 3-53 is not a turbo (3-53 T) ; but just normally aspirated, it may not be real strong at the higher altitudes. Also, I'd look at the engine weights; I think the Detroit is heavier. I forgot to mention regarding the 53 swap I did into my '72, I added a leaf to the front springs and I had a 3 core radiator built. For an off road rig and for simplicity, I'd lean toward the big block. Not sure about that ZF box but with the torque of the 460, the NP435 should work fine. If your truck is a 250, you have the best T-case in the 205. Let me know what you decide and good luck with your swap.
I reread your email and understand you have one of the in-out T-cases rather than a 205. I'd consider finding a 205. I have rebuilt them; they are very simple and very tough. Because the trans and the T-case are divorced, it makes the install much easier.
"fuel delivery issue" seems to be a pretty safe bet with a diesel - unless the muffler bearings are going out or the spark plugs got fouled by the kanoooton valve. Yep, with diesels it is either a fuel issue or a fuel issue. That is a solid looking truck! If it was four wheel drive it would be tempting. Sounds sweet too - great job!
eh it could be ignition as well, but if it's ignition it means time for a rebuild 'cause some doof ran it in a dust bowl with no air filter and destroyed the top end...
It is kind of a lot, but it looks like a real solid truck, and it has a running and apparently driving 2 Stroke Detroit! Super Cab is a pretty large premium too, especially with the long bed. I have a '77 F150 regular cab long bed, with a 240 Inline Six and a three on the tree - 240 is a destroked 300, someone probably swapped it in there so they could rob the 300 for another truck. 240 has a higher compression head however, which makes an improvement on a 300. Hope you do more vids on this truck! If it has a cargo light for the bed, I can tell you how to make it so that the cargo light comes on without turning on the dome light too.

Your comment on unique eye-burning fumes from 53 series exhaust took me back to the winter of '72-'73 when I had just taken a job as salesman with Great Lakes Diesel, the DDA distributer in Clevelands NO Ohio area. My office was on a second floor, up 2 dozen steps from the dirty engine cleaning area and the dynamometer. Noise and the fumes sent me home with a hangover frequently . A good reason to get out and call on customers. And back in the '60s in the Gateway shop in LaCrosse, the Detroits at that time were all lower compression 17 to 1, so that blue smoke was sickening also .
