    I didn't even know hydraulic starters were a thing. No need for batteries or an air supply! Just set the rig somewhere, forget about it for a couple years, come back, pump it up and get right back to work!

  • @newjerseybill3521
    @newjerseybill3521 2 года назад +27

    I know those hydraulic starters too well, they where a PITA on deck engines on our barges during the winter months. The normal stand by pressure on those systems was 3000 PSI. I got a chuckle when early on in the video when you said give it a few pump and start it. :) Well, a whole heck of a lot of pumps later and you are at 3000 psi, and in the winter months that usually wasn't enough to get a cold 71 started, so more pumping. We ended up (1) switching to a Bosch hydraulic starting system which was more reliable, (2) tying all the engines together to give more cranking volume with all of them returning to a common reservoir, and (3) installing an electric hydraulic pump down below. Couldn't use electric starters due to sparks in the gasoline cargo block. and the company didn't want to go with the cost of a whole new air start system from scratch. Although later on we did talk the company into replacing the dreaded hydraulic start system on one barge with 3 12V71 cargo pump engines with air starters. PS, do you have the missing parts from the pump somewhere? PPS. The accumulators should be precharged to 1500 PSI. Easiest way to verify that is the hydraulic pressure should pump up to 1500 quickly, then it takes forever beyond that as you are actually moving the pistons and compressing the nitrogen gas. PPPS. The device @1:16:00 is the high temperature valve. As long as there is cooling water going through that sensor, it keeps the oil valve cool, supplying oil pressure to the pressure diaphragm keeping the emergency shut down butterfly valve open. On cooling failure the hot exhaust gasses opens the dump valve in it and drops the oil pressure to the emergency shutdown The device @1:17:15 is the overspeed dump valve, it dumps the pressure to the shutdown on overspeed.

      @Ol2Stroker  2 года назад +2

      Great comment Bill thank you! I don't have any of the missing pieces (assuming you mean for connections). The pre- charge at 1500 explains a lot thank you!

      Even a high EGT could shut it down. Fuckin Cool!

  • @mitchcardosi92
    @mitchcardosi92 2 года назад +15

    The mechanism in the exhaust is part of the emergency shutdown system, it detects high egt temperatures, and will trip the intake butterfly if temperatures get too high, and the coolant lines keep the oil from coking, also once the engine starts, push that chrome t handle in, its just to keep the butterfly open until the engine builds oil pressure. I had a similar system on my deere 440icd crawler with the 2-53 Detroit

    Nice find Wayne! Navy used pumps like those to refloat ships where the below deck areas were flooded hence the name dewatering pump. Hyd start meant no battery or charging system to be a source of ignition around spilled fuels etc.. I think your plans for growing the channel by investing in video equipment and items like the Navy pump to work on are a great plan. Hope to meet you in person sometime, I'm a fellow New Yorker hailing from the Elmira area. Keep up the good work!

    Wayne, what a blast from the past, and as a former military guy, it does not surprise me if the guy that bought it for his operation, might have bout it with even less hours than when you bought it. Many pieces of equipment like that, the military had ready in storage for many years, and never used, until some big disaster or major war came about. It’s another Cold War relic, and it is quite nice a piece of equipment. Too bad you can’t find the inlet and outlet tubes that are bolted on to the pump. You should also ha some water or rv antifreeze in the pump when operating or it could ruin the pump seals. Take care, and that was a great video.

    Wayne-------That was a good challenge with all the safety shut down stuff , normally used on industrial applications only. But the Gateway fleet spec for shutdown systems on all brands of engines exposed me to that setup on about 10 GMC Crackerboxes in the early '60s. The instructions for washing the dry air cleaner elements was also something we tried at Gateway for a while to reduce air cleaner maintenance cost, even though we had dial type restriction guages on the truck, so changed by restriction. Not by appearance or a set time interval . Problem with washing is you end up with dirty washing solution on both sides of the paper, so you end up sucking dirt in your intake at one time.........or another . Secondly, after drying and inspecting the paper with the light, you got a diminishing interval between max restriction readings, so it was discontinued . Those 2-53s are neat engines, like you I never had one until fall of 2021 , when I acquired a Hobart 300 amp DC welder. I just installed a measured shot ether kit , so it'll start at any temp, as I'm ready to part with it now. I visualize you getting some hose connections and suction hose from your fire dept and do a pump test in the Mohawk .

    I have two of the same pumps built in October 1966 with the original air filter. They both have less than 300 hours and I use them for my Gold Mine one of them just blew up rebuilding it now thought it was cool to see another one. That looks just like it

      Mine had the original oil filter and everything. It was crazy one had five hours on it. The other one had 300 but the pump coupling was bad if you look at the name plate on the back of the water pump, it’ll tell you the month and the year it was made

      She’ll just sit there and run at three grand for 12 hours not even think twice and it sounds so sweet, echoing off the ponds

    Damnit Wayno! This has got to be the coolest thing I've ever seen! Fuckin Sick! I thought the 6V92 water pump was awesome. The 1966 air filter floored me. Well, and the hydraulic start 🍻

    You should have a couple of gallons of water in the bottom of the pump so that you don’t burn out the seal

    Nice rig. Dirt literally as old as Moses on the label of that 66 air cleaner. Guaranteed to pump water, smeggy, smegma, Smegus and the very rare but oh so potent MUNG [all words to add to the Shmoo list of appropriate epithets]. 🙂
