Hello from Oregon, USA -- Thank-you very much for this beautifully produced and quite relaxing video hike up Mt. Kinabalu. In the Spring of 1978, I met up with a couple of friends from The Netherlands in Kota Kinabalu and we decided to climb Mt. Kinabalu before travelling to the eastern part of Sabah for a planned 2-month self-guided canoe trip up the Segama River. Tourism in Borneo wasn't really a thing 44 years ago, and aside from a day use shelter at the park entrance, there were no accommodations or other infrastructure for visitors. Climbs were self-guided on a sketchy, undeveloped trail up the mountain through pristine forest with an abundance of various pitcher plant species, with the only lodging being an unattended stone hut with wooden bunks to rest before the summit push. We stayed on the mountain for 3 days without seeing any other people, but upon returning to the park entrance, ran into a group of Nepali Gurkha soldiers preparing to climb the mountain. Stationed in Hong Kong but in Borneo for training, these elite members of the British Army were all ethnic Gurungs from the mountainous Annapurna region of the Himalayas in North-Central Nepal. Coincidentally, I had travelled to Borneo myself from that very region of Nepal, where I had lived and worked for 3 years in a remote, traditional Gurung village NW of Pokhara. I had left Nepal 1 month earlier and was on my way back to Oregon when I ended up in Borneo. So yeah, small world. Anyway, old guy here with lots of stories just missing the good old days and my youth. Thanks again for helping to bring up these memories of what was an adventurous and really fun time in my life. Best wishes.
I’m loving how real, detailed this vlog is to share your experiences climbing mount Kinabalu. Now I know what to expect and be prepared beforehand. Thank you for this and hope to see more vlogs like this in the future! 💕

Amazingly beautiful video. 👍👍 I've climbed it twice when i was 18 and 21. Now i am 58 but i still want to go there for the last time..There were no restaurant at PanarLaban during those years. I hv my own memories on this mountain back in 1983,at that time Panar Laban was different cos theres no restaurant or what ,you have to bring and cook your own food, there was only dorm to sleep with sleeping bags for each. since I was with students friends ,about 20 of us, it seems cooking was not a problem for me .lol. watching this video bring back all those memories. Beautiful stuff, had my chance to climb this mountain when I was 14 years old in 2019, I never really knew how to appreciate the scenery then because I was so young. But now that I'm older, it really gives me more appreciation for how beautiful our country Malaysia is. I will never forget this once in a lifetime experience. Beautiful video documentary as well, I can remember it all now thanks to you.

Thanks Kate! 😀🇲🇾
Woow really cool video, after corona definitely I'll climb mount kinabalu
Yesss, definitely do it. It was so amazing we want to do it again! After corona :). If you do, let us know how you go!
And tq so much for this . 🤗
Wow that would have a totally amazing experience and I'm sure a lot tougher having to carry and cook your own food too. So glad you enjoyed seeing this, thank you for watching :-)
Terimakasih for this video
Tan Tobias Ranggie Sama sama! Thank you for watching :-)
Nice👍. This is near to my Grandmother's hometown and we can see the mountain when there's no cloud covering it.
Seeing you hiking down from the top makes my palm sweat😂
That's so awesome! And you should have seen how fast some people were going down the mountain, it was incredible! 😮
Wow, congratulation, you guys reached the peak eventualy.. But I didnt see Mike smile all the way.. 😅😅

We try to go in mount kinabalu because we thought its not hard to go there but unfortunetly were wrong 😅 because were not a hikers and we have no any experience 😂.. So we decide not to go and just get some picture on our way hehehe... But thanks for this video At least i see the top of mount kinabalu 😍
Thank you, we are glad you still managed to see and share our experiences at the top! It was definitely challenging for me (Serina) 😀
Wow! Thank you for such a great compliment 😊🙏
You climbed Gunung Kinabalu the same year as us 😀.
We hope to climb it again soon 🇲🇾

Salute to you both for making the climb! I heard the climb is hard. That's why I never tried eventhough Sandakan is my second home (lived there for 18 yrs & still have a house there). Congrats!
Oh thank you so much for your kind words! The climb was definitely challenging but also definitely worthwhile :)
I've done the climb to the peak before and this video gave me all sorts of nostalgia. :(

Eliza Ell Thanks for your comment! All the artists for the music is listed at the end of the video in credits.
Best advice would be stay at KK park the night before the climb, don’t rush up the mountain, take it slow. 😀
Beautiful country & i like.
Greetings from Indonesia.
Yes it is! We hope to see Your country soon Too
awesome video mates, txs for sharing!👍👍👍been there 3 times & the last round i did it via Mesilau trail during 2006, the scenery was fantastic, unfortunately this trail has closed indefinitely after the earthquake!😢 wish i could be there again!

Good luck sir
Wow, that's fantastic to hear you are climbing it again! At least they limit the number of people that climb everyday but yes it would have changed heaps, especially after the earthquake in 2015. Please let us know how you go :)
