    The biggest issue is the way elden rings invasion requirements are rn, it pits invaders against only 2 types of people, the people who just want to chill with their friends and explore the game, and the people who want to abuse the system to destroy invaders, neither of which are healthy for the games 'ecosystem'

      IMHO the best type of invaders are those who intentionally kill phantoms first when possible. A fair amount of hosts will at least try if they feel like they might have a chance, because they have a friend or two with them. Sure, a fair amount of hosts would just disconnect if their phantoms are killed, but at least the invader had fun by pvping against the phantoms.
      Most of the time, the best pvp experience is through red sign duels, but for many people, the ability to knowingly go into pvp where they know they are outnumbered is fun.
      I just think that the pve crowd gets too worried about losing their "progression" when they get invaded. In Elden Ring this is really much less of an issue as there are so many graces compared to the prior games....But it would be nice to have slower cooldowns. I can understand the PVE crowd getting frustrated with being invaded multiple times in a row. Feels like there should be a cooldown timer.

    • @ISesseriI
      @ISesseriI 3 месяца назад +6

      I feel like gank squads are the way bigger problem than people just trying to chill. Those people existed in the other games, and now they have so many advantages they only lose because casual elden ring players are 15 vigor entering liurnia, or they are just all extremely inexperienced. Those people simply have a mindset problem, they don't see invasions the way miyazaki sees it, they literally see it as a bully coming to hurt them. I've been the only person who supports invading in a discord server full of people that think grinding runes is necessary to get powerful, or that unpatch their game to keep broken versions of old weapons like SoNaF, they all despise invaders, or swapped to playing seamless coop so they don't have to deal with them.

  • @KawabungaDude
    @KawabungaDude 7 месяцев назад +33

    idk, i think there's a reason the most popular mod for this game is seamless co-op. think its at like 3m downloads.
    many people just don't care for it. imbalanced weapons, still using p2p of all things in 2024 so it's a latency nightmare(proc buildup on dodged attacks for example), you've got your own video on the ridiculous state of parrying, twinks, etc. if people wanted to pvp, they'd go to the coliseum or lay down a dueling sign. there's even the taunter's tongue. but it's still imposed on co-op and it sucks. i feel like the closest miyazaki got to his "vision" was the giant jar warriors. npc tarnished based on real players.
    elden ring made big strides in moving away from the more obnoxious things in past games. stakes of marika, groups refilling flasks, and scarabs help casuals without making the game worse and i believe invasions would be the same if they removed the forced nature of it. the tools are there for everyone who wants to partake. and if no one partakes, then perhaps that shows maybe it wasn't a very good mechanic after all. because it's not as if pvp is an unpopular idea; the most popular games on earth are all/have pvp.

      Anyways,aside from the excellent advice given by Mr ghoulishgoober, the obvious question lies with the skill of your own host and friend; invaders are surprise obstacles that exist to test that skill, using the standard of a similarly levelled player. Believe me, I have been (and am still) a Warrior Of Sunlight, and have felt the frustration of seeing my host die dozens of times.
      My frustration, however, isn't directed at my obstacles; it is directed at the host, and myself for failing to do my job in protecting the host,depending on the situation.
      Sometimes, I am busied by some enemy or the other, leaving my host vulnerable. Sometimes, my host does an incredibly stupid move, and dies despite my best efforts. Sometimes, I do an incredibly stupid move and die myself.
      It does not matter of what kills me or him is an enemy, or an invader, or even fall damage. What matters is how I learn to sharpen myself against them, and pray my hosts learn the same.
      I know none of them personally, but I help them to the best of my ability.

    I think what players need more than anything is incentive to PVP. when you struggle and overcome a boss, you are rewarded with runes or souls or blood echos among other potential drops that help you on your journey. If you get invaded and you overcome your opponent you're rewarded with a meager handful of currency and sometimes a humanity equivalent depending on the game. Nioh lets you collect gear from other players (I know it's not technically an invasion) which I think is awesome. Any incentive at all to pvp beyond just doing it for fun would help the community flourish greatly.

    • @nojusticenetwork9309
      @nojusticenetwork9309 8 месяцев назад +9

      People who enjoy PvP don't need much incentive beyond the rush of "I'm better than you". Fighting games and FPS' give ranks and in game currency. But I hope you're not suggesting literally taking gear out of another player's inventory or build just because they lost, because that's a really shitty incentive. You lost a fight therefore you lose gear you've spent likely hours trying to get? That would only piss more people off.

    • @peripheralvission
      @peripheralvission 8 месяцев назад +47

      @@nojusticenetwork9309 If Miyazaki wants people to play with pvp as a constant threat to those who don't want it then he needs to give those people an incentive to not just turn off their console or wifi when they get invaded. In Nioh you're not stealing gear, you're rewarded with a replica. It works in that game because the loot is Diablo style with randomized stats. I don't know what the reward would be in Elden Ring. I would be ecstatic if there were cosmetic rewards within the shallow armor alteration system. 1/10th of a level of runes is not something casuals are going to risk their progress for.

      Back in Dark souls 1, that's why I did most of the playthrough in hollow form unless I was planning to make a run for a crazy hard boss I knew would at least have an NPC summon nearby, and when an invader appeared before I could reach the boss I just grit my teeth, fought my best, and actually mannaged a win rate of . . . I think around 2 wins to 7 losses.
      For Dark souls 2, the fact that there was no non invadable state was very annoying, and the anti invasion seed really wasn't much help since I tended to go for a 'clear the level as I go' approach.
      I did use the seed twice though, once in Eleum Loyce when an invader attacked me for a bit then retreated into a courtyard full of strong enemies I hadn't gotten round to taking out one by one yet. I gave them about a minute to come back out, but they stayed so I used the seed. The other time, I'd just bonfired and was about to quit out of the game for the night, when suddenly I got pulled out of the bonfire by an invader. I was really annoyed, but then I noticed that all the enemies were respawned, and the invader was nowhere near so I used the seed and just waited for a bit. When they got to me I was able to take them out.
      In Dark Souls 3 I mostly followed my approach from DS1, and thus mostly got invaded after beating a boss and entering the next area embered up. Sometimes the invader killed me, sometimes it would be the world hazards, I think I mannaged to take down one but I'm not sure.
      And in Elden ring I only co-oped once and I've never gotten invaded. I do not miss the invasions at all.

The concept of invasions is cool but most people just want to play with their friends. It's a game, not a competition. You can always say "git gud" or "skill issue" but at the end of the day most co-op players dont give a flying fuck about those things.
    And that's why seamless co op exists.

    While you might be right from a strictly game's mechanics point of view, and right about the self improvement part, there are multiple counter arguments to be made :
    Most people are not hardcore souls players. They play occasionally and seek the thrill of have fun and feel the reward of finally defeating a really hardcore boss. And when the boss is really too much for them, then they will invite co-op to their world in an attempt to make the game easier. Not realizing they in fact made it a lot harder due to the "non consensual" invitation of being invaded.
    Most of the time. invaders are skilled, if not insanely skilled. Sure, the player being invaded could learn fro the experience, but most of the time they won't. Because they are not PvP oriented and are not seeking to be good at PvP. The skill gap between the 2 is way too large and deep. It will just be an overwhelming stomp.
    Not to mention latency, which makes the game feels like all the mechanics have to be re-learn all over again.
    On the other hand, people invading other player world do it with the purpose of PvP. they are not PvE oriented, and most of the time have a lot of experience doing it. They are here because they are trying to "ruin" someone's run. Therefore them being at an imbalanced disadvantage is in my eyes the fair thing to do. Even if it means on occasions the invader will fall into a trap of a great PvP team that was just waiting for him to invade... At equal skill, the invader always loses. But most of the time again, skill is on the invader' side...
    Lastly, the whole argument regarding PvP in general is not a valid one. if people wants to PvP, the game provide means to do it. There is an arena, and the community generally agree to meet at Raya Lucaria to have "PvP duels". Where all the people involved are here of the PvP and are seeking a human opponent.
    PvP in Elden Ring is almost a complete different game than PvE in Elden Ring. And I am one whom play (almost) exclusively PvE elden Ring and Hate being invaded when I help a friend explore a map. Because my build is meant for PvE, and I don't want to face a invader with better skills than me, who knows the map better than me, to whom the map's mob won't aggro, while the game expect me, who hardly knows how my build works in PvE, to protect my friend who hardly knows how to roll to begin with...
    I will first learn Elden Ring in PvE, and then, if I feel like closing the immense gap between my skills and the invaders' skills in PvP, I will try my hands in PvP. But until then, the game is challenging enough with just PvE. And If to avoid PvP, that means I essentially soft ban myself from Co-op, then it's a major game's flaw in my eyes.
    And while I hear the argument about self improving, I'd prefer to improve on my terms, not being forced down my throat by unwillingly inviting invaders to destroy me...
    In all games, there is always a separation between its single player based players, and its multiplayer based players. Prime example would be the Total war : Warhammer... allowing PvP into a player's game who wants, and only wants to PvE is not a good idea in my mind...
    At least I am not usually vocal about it. But I hate not being able to enjoy the game with my friend, because we all are very casuals, and we all know we are as good as dead the second the invasion message pops up.
    Yeah, if you guys are wondering, we had terrible experience being invaded. Like I said, to the point I soft banned myself from Co-op (unless we are right in from of the boss "golden door").
    (Sorry about the Novel. Its the first time I publicly speak about it, and I had to let it go for once...)

      You forgot to mention COOP also makes enemy mob and boss HP double or even triple depending how many you summoned. So for a new player struggling its not 'easy' mode with coop, your summoned coop players only get half their flasks as well which in harder boss fights is a challenge on its own. Invasions just bring it to a whole new level of unfair and unpredictability most coop pve players do not care for that pvp players relish in. Its no different if you took like a Halo Multiplayer player and they could invade your Halo coop campaign mission, they'd completely destroy those 2 players without question.

  • @a_angry_bunny
    @a_angry_bunny 8 месяцев назад +14

    There are three very easy ways for Fromsoft to make new players more likely to engage in pvp. That is to stop making co-op take a resource, stop making players lose "rare" resources when they die in pvp, and stop limiting where you can summon random people.
    As the game currently works, you have to use a resource to summon other players to begin with. This resource isn't very hard to get as you can literally craft it within the first few minutes of starting up a new save. This begs the question of why it is a requirement to begin with and not just make it so you can just turn on the ability to see summon signs to begin with. If you happen to die, it's not like having to make another one if you somehow ran out is a major inconvenience. Do you know what is a major loss though when you die? Losing an active Rune arc. Technically, Rune arcs aren't hard to get either. But since they cannot be crafted, they actually do feel like a limited resource that will always be on the back of the average Joe's mind when they see the invasion message pop up. All of that, though, would still be fine if co-oping in Elden Ring wasn't such a hassle. Why can't we co-op with randoms anywhere? Why does it have to be at predetermined statues scattered across the landscape? It's not to prevent people from only summoning in front of boss doors as we can still choose to do that by manually putting our summon signs at the door. Furthermore, why are we kicked from the game when a boss dies, and why are we limited by zone? Heck, while I'm on a roll, why not make it so the invader can attack you in the boss arena?
    TL;DR: The co-op in Elden Ring and Souls games is overcomplicated for the sake of a silly "vision" and just needs to be overhauled for the long-term health of this type of game.

    As I have stated to friends; it's not the PVP itself that bothers me, it's the frequency. The moment you entered an area with a different name in Elden Ring, the system would allow you to be invaded again. We'd have literally just finished a fight with an invader, took three steps into a new area of the region we were in, and immediately get invaded again. It made progression slow to a crawl and was annoying as all Hell. Resting at a Grace also reset the region, so even if we won, if we restocked our items we were immediately punished for it.
    What would've fixed it entirely, at least for me, is disabling invasions for a generous period of time unless you used a specific item after defeating an invader. It would allow us to recoup, explore, and progress but not completely devalue the system as it was intended.

    Okay, I will just have to explain what you all do not get. This is an *OPEN WORLD* arpg. This is *NOT* like other darksouls games. It can take you +20 minutes just to fucking ride somewhere new on the map. Which means getting invaded numerous times on your way to a new area, much less a new boss fight. Thus getting invaded repeatedly on your way to any new location is frustrating and boring. This takes the fun, excitement, and novelty out of invasion which is the point of the invasions. I mean, lets not pretend that most invader do not use the same 5 or so setups.
    The answer of "just play offline" or "just use a mod" is dumb and asinine since that will take away from the pool of people you can invade. So you will get more gank squads making your invasions miserable. Thus reducing the number of PvP invaders too. PvP players need Co-op player to have someone to PvP with. If you are going to say that is just how the game works, we should bring back infinite backstabs and max level twinking then too, since that was also part of the game. Fromsoft has been tweaking and changing PvP since Demon souls since it clearly didn't match their vision of what they wanted it to be.
    To everyone saying this isn't a co-op game, that is correct. It is also not a PvP game, it is a rpg. Fromsoft could turn off the servers tomorrow and it wouldn't hurt them too much. They made their bank already. They keep them up because they care for the community, and we as a community should actually work to make the game better in the future and bring more people to the multiplayer community; not shrink it.
    At the end of the day, games are meant to be fun first. Sure some of that fun can come from overcoming challenges. Sure some of that fun comes from trolling people. However, when those challenges become monotonous, and the trolling becomes dry; it isn't fun. So lets not pretend like this system is perfect, or even that good honestly. Let's actually talk about how we can improve this for both sides in the DLC or future games, so we can keep this community growing getting stronger.
    Now, let both sides of this discussion hang our egos at the door. Keep our victim complexes and superiority complexes at the door, and make the online community of this game a fun, interesting, and novel experience for everyone so people will be playing these games for years to come.

    11:30 well, there IS a pretty easy way to tell gankers apart from casual players: the Taunter's Tongue. Make it so if the Taunter's Tongue is used, the invasion has to be a 3v2/3v3. If not tongued, the lobby can stay as a 3v1.

      I'd honestly love this sort of mechanic. You could invade anyone without having to worry if your gear is optimal for that, and in turn invaded wouldn't have to prepare mentally for that over-the-top grind mega-death-edgelord one-shot build that requires very specific set of gear to counter.
      Something akin to "you can posses up to certain amount of times, and different enemies cost you different amount of 'possession' energy which also drains slowly over time, faster the longer you are not possessing something" could be really interesting idea. So one could either go in and possess a Dark Knight, but it'd drain almost all their meter, or just keep being a rat and try to cause more poison on the invaded. Would also stop the AFK grinders from existing (the invaders who enter a world and then use a glitch to go out-of-bounds, just waiting for the invaded to die)

  • @LordSetsu

    Due to a bug, you can actually get invaded by a higher or even a lower lvl player. This happened once while I was invading on DS3. If I recall, I was around lvl 300, and one shot someone with a claymore they messaged me and we had a talk about the games mechanics and how parrying works they were asking fairly basic questions about how to increase healing so I asked them what lvl they were and told me they were lvl 27 like homie just finished fighting vordt. I felt bad and ended up playing with the dude for the rest of his playthrough as his co-op summon. This happened a few months after the realease of the Ringed City DLC.
    I don't know how common it is, but it definitely can occur atleast on DS3. I haven't really invaded in Elden Ring since there's not much of a reason to invade without covenants.

They could have been tied to certain NPCs serving specific demi-gods, like Varrè serving Mohg. I would have LOVED a red-hunting faction my head cannon calls The Blades of Miquella that functioned like the blue spirits where you are summoned to help a host who was invaded, but would only make sense if there was consistant solo invasions.

    The only people I have ever seen advocate in support of invasions are the very people who invade. Because they are having fun killing other players and accept that they will often roflstomp people who do not want to be invaded. You can talk about challenges and overcoming adversity and the inherent advantages the invaded have all you want. If the invaded are simply not good enough at this niche part of the game, there will be no real challenge for you. All you did was reset the progress of some people for your own fun. You did not do them any favors or taught them valuable lessons about life. You interrupted their good time because you felt your own entertainment is inherently worth more than theirs.
    BUT in capital letters it is a part of the game, put there by the developers. Therefore your actions are absolved.

I have a friend who's never played the souls games before share in my love because I taught him a few tricks about abusing invaders and making their lives hell. You're at a massive advantage mechanically speaking when getting invaded; especially if you're running with a phantom and with hunters on dial. I believe invasions should remain just for people who enjoys them, but there should be a way to play the game with friends without getting constantly interrupted by other players, there's a reason the seamless coop is the most popular mod ever for this game and I hope they continue creating more of these for other souls games, I might even try finishing DS3 in that case, games should be played in any way you want.

    The problem with invasions is that invaders are entering as their own character they've built and prepped for pvp battle. Someone doinking around in pve and just brute forcing themselves through content or settling on a build that's no where near complete or pve centric etc. will be at a disadvantage.
    Invasions are fun, but when someone is coming into your world and is willing to use every trick in the book to beat you and is trained or practiced to do so, it pushes the inconvenienced player towards going fully offline or forming their own ganking system.
    To alleviate this should be an invader becoming a standard enemy in that hosts game world with that npc's abilities. Maybe boosting the HP of the player controlled npc enemy and tying some decent rewards for the host to beat them and vice versa. I'd also say not openly announcing the invader or not telling the player where they are. This keeps the cat and mouse aspect going.
    Using the characters that people build out makes the game a fighting game. I think if players invaded as NPC enemy types it would alleviate the meta game that pve players aren't aware of yet be a skill based challenge.

      The invader has access to the same tools as the host but with less resources. Yes they tend to have more knowledge of the game (hence a better thought out build) but in most cases ARE at a disadvantage. Using existing enemy types as just a vehicle for an invader would take most of the fun out of invading. Invaders want to be able to play with the weapons, spells, gear, etc that they have worked to gather and learned how to use. Not play as 'Soldier of Godrick'.

    • @Atarius
      @Atarius Месяц назад

      @Nowaylarry I'm not saying don't have a pvp option, but the entire fun point for many invaders is having pvp specific gear and abilities and invading for a singular purpose. Pve, you have to be ready for anything. A Swiss army knife vs. a sword is going to lose more than not.
      As an invader, I can choose to be pvp built and stand in a spot until I find an opponent. The pve is adventuring and doesn't have that luxury.
      My solution is to merge the two. Invader wants to fight a pc line, and pve can have that fight couched in their adventuring.

    Way back when internet gaming was text based, one of the moderators decided to do some science studying why players played. Ultimately the conclusion was that nearly every player could fit down into 4 subtypes, the Achievers (Who wanted the thrill of setting goals then reaching them), the Explorers (Who wanted the thrill of discovering new things), the Socializers (Who wanted the thrill of socializing using the game), and Killers (who wanted the thrill of being able to 'demonstrate dominance' over other players). Ballancing for these 4 types is one of the core concerns of nearly all modern multiplayer gaming. Though in the case of the souls games, there's a fifth type of player - the solo gamer who's mostly just trying to get through the game and wants to minimize having to deal with other players (I'll admit that's me).

    Personally I think the biggest problem is that there is no penatly for invaders and barely any rewards for the invaded. Like yeah I get that currently everything is stacked against invaders, but on the other hand there is also no risk for an invader since nothing happens if they die... nothing. They don't lose their runes, they respawn where they stared before the invasion and promptly use another finger to invade again, no penalty or disadvantage.
    The invaded? Loses runes, loses progress and time (has to go back where he was before and since he most likely summoned his coop partner again his chance to get invaded before he gets the runes back is high), get's frustrated as is evident by all the reddit posts.
    And when someone wins, a couple of souls that you could most likely farm faster with normal enemies.
    Especially considering Miyazakis own opinion that an Invader should be something like a really dangerous enemy that can randomly appear, that is a bad system imo.
    Tbh anything is better then the current reward system, Invaders don't need the runes they get since they most likely already have their build complete and the invaded barely get anything but could lose alot. They could give maybe upgrade materials or something like that idk.
    Personally I think a good idea is a buff/debuff system. it could be something like this: If you invade but lose. you get a Stat debuff for a certain amount of time like for example -1 on every stat. And on the other hand if you win against an invader, you get +1 on every stat. This could potentially Stack up to +/-5 on every stat and last for idk maybe 15 Minutes or something.
    That way there is an actual penalty for invaders if they lose (since theri stats are lowerd maybe they can't use their weapons/spells anymore for example), but the reward for the invaded is also worth it. Especially in early game to get a boost of 8 Levels for a win, even if just temporary, is really good and since it could stack up, maybe they won't be as annoyed by multiple invasions.

    PvP is great when you get a "good" invasion, but there are so many things that can go wrong with it that I can see how it left a HORRNDOUS first impression on the community. I tried to do a full coop run with my friend, and most of the invaders at low levels feel like a bunch of twinks who pull out some stupid overpowered weapon the second they start losing and then bow. A few months ago there were multiple people doing bloodhound step double naginata at like level 15. I'm so baffled they dont have some minimum level restrictions to prevent this

    • @boyishdude1234
      @boyishdude1234 9 месяцев назад +17

      Disagree on the PvP being great when you get a "good" invasion (it doesn't function very well. If the FGC saw the Soulsborne PvP they would violently hound From Software to implement rollback netcode more than for any other game in existence), but rather than a level restriction for PvP (which kind of already exists in the form of weapon level matchmaking, though it's far from complete. They need to implement Estus Level matchmaking and Talisman slot matchmaking as well), it would be a lot easier to restrict PvP based on area progress. Put simply, if you have a spell that can only be gotten from Raya Lucaria, but a given host hasn't been to that specific area, you can't invade that host. With Elden Ring being an open world game where you can basically go anywhere you want at any time, this feature was needed more than ever, and it _baffles_ me that such an obvious and vital solution was never considered. Then again, the game was rushed out the door, so it's not terribly surprising that the online multiplayer in general is such an afterthought in the game's design. You couldn't even use Summoning Pools when the game first came out because that mechanic wasn't finished on release. They had to finish the system and then patch in the items that were needed to be able to send signs to Summoning Pools later in the game's life cycle.

Everyone who went to jarburg would lose 90% of the playerbase as invadable. The better option would be scaling. Scale invaders down to the maximum estus, weapon level, level, and damage of the player invading. So a level whatever player can invade anyone, but will have their weapon level, estus level, and estus amount scaled to be equal to the host. The technology exists, and the only reason I don't suggest rune level is because that might cause more issues than it solves. With weapon and flask levels you can at least quickly and easily scale them.

    • @boyishdude1234
      @boyishdude1234 9 месяцев назад +18

      @@lususnaturae881 It's a wonderful idea. It would instantly solve nearly all cases of twinking by itself, and Estus Matchmaking as well as Talisman Slot Matchmaking would resolve most of the remaining issues with twinking. Downscaling invaders to be more mathematically equivalent to the host objectively doesn't work (this has long been proven to be the truth; invaders complained about twink phantoms in DS3 even though they were downscaled to the host's level for PvE and PvP, and invaders ran twink builds in DS3 that could one-shot hosts or get pretty close to that despite the fact that invaders are usually a lower level than the hosts are). The problem isn't necessarily that invaders are doing too much damage, so much as it is that they're invading lower level and midlevel hosts with spells, equipment and items that they don't have access to and can't meaningfully compete with. In an open world game this is fundamentally not acceptable because there's really nothing to prevent players from going to Caelid and getting the Moonveil (for example) at the start of the game, and the same is true of most of the other things you can get that aren't earlygame options. Once you get Torrent the open world folds over like an omelet, and this has disastrous consequences for the invasive PvP that are impossible to overlook. At least in Dark Souls 3 you had to somehow beat the Abyss Watchers, the Dancer and Champion Gundyr before you could get a Hornet Ring for your twink invader build, or in Dark Souls 1 you had to make it to Anor Londo as a very low level character to get Havel's Armor for your twink invader build. Those kinds of restrictions and caveats don't really exist in Elden Ring, at least not to anywhere near the same degree.
      You say that this will make invaders unable to access the majority of hosts? Good, that's the whole point. The fairness of the PvP should be prioritized over the invader experience, especially if they're not going to implement dedicated servers with rollback netcoding. Invaders are trolls, anyway. They don't deserve to have a good time. This also makes no mention of the fact that invaders usually prefer to stay at a certain level anyway so that way they can keep invading at a certain level range. They'll be able to adapt their builds to account for these new systems.

    I don't really have any issues with invasions existing I generally enjoy the mechanic but, the mentality of "if you co op you are consenting to pvp" isn't really accurate. You can be fine with one thing and not with another...like saying if a girl is consenting to sex, that means she's okay with anal or a guy knocking her up since that can be part of sex too. Another example would be that I like getting paid for my job but, that doesn't mean that I'm real keen on getting taxed either.

And *especially* PvP systems that are made to be more for griefing than anything like soulsborne invasions. It's frustrating that to play with a friend, I have to endure bullshit from overpowered players who know the game better and have better items and spells. It wouldn't have killed the devs to have a coop only option, it's super frustrating. But... as rage inducing as unwanted invasions are, I sure as hell can't equate it to rape. In a GAME, I set the rules for how difficult things get, when me and my friends want to play Dark Souls or Elden ring, we want to stomp bosses, not get stomped by low-level twinks who just have fun by ruining someone else's fun.
    Sometimes you do indeed get lucky and the invader will play like a proper player, not abusing hitboxes with fast or broken weapons, using scarlet rot builds like a absolute tosser, or use a weapon so specialized in anti-armor that you might as well be naked and have 10 vigor.
    At least Elden Ring has the mod Seamless CO-OP to allow you to do just that, play from start to finish with your friends, without the fear of invaders ruining your day.

    My only real issue with invaders is that, at least for me, when I'm playing with my friends, it's because we're just trying to experience a game that we all enjoy together. And especially when we're running through an area, just trying to reach the next site of grace, it's frustrating when bad red man appears and we're forced into 1 of 3 scenarios.
    Either 1, we're forced to blitz our way straight to the boss and stop exploring so that we can avoid the invader, which is even more frustrating if we have to skip a site of grace to do that.
    2, we're forced to fight them with builds that are centered around PvE or, in some of my friend's cases, builds that are centered around "I dunno I needed that stat to use this weapon that and I'm just throwing stats at whatever works for me." which almost never goes well for us. Like, I don't think any of us have ever successfully beaten an invader who was actually trying to kill us without resorting to cheap, unfair strategies, and doing that just feels... Wrong, I guess.
    Or 3, just accept that we're going back to the last site of grace, so we just stand there and let them get it over with. Which has ultimately become our default response.
    None of these are fun experiences for us. And while I know that invaders aren't going out of their way to ruin fun, for the experience that my friends and I want out of the game, which is an experience that get most of the time when we're not being invaded, it's not very fun for us at all. It's frustrating.
    That's not to say that we've never had a positive experience with an invader. We were once invaded by a fun lad named Pothead. He led us through the path in Stormveil that leads to the ulcerated tree spirit boss that none of us would have known was there otherwise. Then we saw the area that was very obviously a boss arena so we just kind of stared into it because we really just wanted to fight Godrick. And then he knocked us all into the pit. And then he just stood up there and watched as we were violently destroyed by a boss that were were not prepared for. Which, honestly? Was actually fun, because he led us to a secret and didn't kill us himself.
    We once got invaded while we were just exploring limgrave and the invader drew a little heart for us out of rocks, dropped some stuff for us, and then had a naked boxing match with all of us. So that was a good time.
    It's just that those kinds of experiences are very few and far-between for us.

Everyone's playing by the same rules, so it's technically not unfair if an attack you dodged visually still damages you, but it's so jarring when these games have such good hitboxes normally. You can usually trust what you're seeing on the screen, but that just goes right out the window in PvP. It's so common that I will see attacks land with their phantom range in PvP videos and no one will bat an eye. I'm sure you can adjust to it, but it's like an entirely different game from PvE.

      Because even Micheal Zaki understands that to COMPLETELY remove any downsides from engaging in co-op absolutely trivializes his games? Im not even talking "easy mode," im talking cat-suit Mario levels of infantilization. The game, outside of bosses, doen't change at all with summons in the world, so no enemy health scaled to number of phantoms, no increase in enemy poise to accomodate 3 ultra greatswords spamming in unison, no change in AI behavior or enemy quantity to compensate either. The only time dedicated hosts ever have trouble is in the bossfights - only if theyre too large to easily stager with two Ultras, and because hosts never need to learn to dodge if theyre just gang piling the whole level before hand, so they get clipped. Even that is mitigated with just spamming magic from the back while your tanks aggro. So they play through once, drop the game because OBVIOUSLY it didnt actually pose any challenge or make them learn any interesting mechanics, and then complain that its a mid game because they only pressed one button the whole time.

    A big problem with invaders besides the problems inherent to darksouls 3 and eldenring regarding to scaling, is the type of player that invades.
    In darksouls 3, invaders often have a goal, namely getting stuff for their covenants. There is a tangible goal and PvP is a fun way to get the items.
    However there are some invaders who just like invading for the sake of invading. And because there are no real rewards for invading in Elden Ring, This is the motivation for all invaders in Elden Ring. Now this wouldn't be a bad thing if they where just "strong enemies" However, due to the nature of PvP games with even a shred of complexity, there will always be a Meta.
    And a lot of players who are driven by the urge to PvP to win will optimize to... well too win... DUH.
    But the builds these players invade with can be very toxic or straight up broken.
    This includes getting weapons from higher level areas and giving them to lower level characters, getting copies of unique weapons to powerstance them eventhough that should only have been possible in NG+, Abusing glitches, or just using a build so completely domminant that there is no real counter for the average player. (With average player here being someone who understands a bit of PvP, and could hold it's own against a normal invader)
    If you play a soulsgame, and you get invaded, and it's some completely broken bullshit build, so you die before you can even react, after which the invader will point down on you, spin and then trow dung pies on your corpse, that will leave a very, very bitter taste in your mouth.
    So what can you do?
    Will you:
    A. research the Meta, spoiling the game in the process, and having to switch your build just so you can deal with invaders.
    Or
    B. Just not deal with invaders anymore by quiting out whenever you see one?
    For a player that just wants to go trough the game with a friend, B is a very tempting option.
    I experienced this stuff recently in DS3. I was playing trough the game with a friend, and we got invaded a lot.
    Now some invader where fun. They where similair in skill and gave a good and honest fight. Loved every second of it, even when I lost.
    Some invaders where kinda bad, we bonked em and they died... we won so of course we had fun.
    Some invaders where really good at the game, but still respectfull and the fight didn't feel annoying eventhough I got my ass handed to me.
    But some invaders where toxic. No fun, they just ran in when you bowed to them, started wacking with their buffed weapons and optimized builds, did the estus cancel glitch so they could heal quicker and where just a pain in the ass to deal with. A lot also had such bad internet that trying to hit them back was litteraly impossible.
    Fuck em.
    I am playing the games to have fun, not to deal with some sweatlord and his build he got from the internet, who's shitty internet connection makes them virtually invincible.
    I even had a guy invade me which made my game so laggy, that I couldn't summon my friend. He didn't damage me or anything and I eventually realised that if I hit him enough, some hits would actually land, so I wacked him untill his health was 0 after which he just disconnected without any message.... God that was ass.
    I understand that invaders can kill you. And I understand that trying to overcome the challenge of a invader adds to the fun. But there is a point where an invader becomes such an obnoxious piece of shit, that just not fighting and disconnecting seems to only way to deal with them.
    Elden Ring seems to have overcompensated for these moments in DS3, and ironically made it worse.
    Because now due to all the gang squads, being super sweaty and using a meta build is the only way to consistently have a good chance when invading people.
    This makes the rare few people who play trough the game with a friend for fun hopelessly outmatched against these sweatlord invaders, making them hate invasions.
    The worst part is, the solution is simple. Just have active rune arcs open up the world to invaders, and add covenants with unique rewards, the items of which could be farmed offline as well.
    This would decrease Gank squad encounters, meaning invaders can be less sweaty. This in turn would make fights more fun and reduce toxic behaviour as well.
    It would incentivise more people to try PvP, due to it being the quickest way to covenant items.
    They did it in DS3, it worked very well with only 2 covenants getting shafted (blue boys rarely get called uppon, and you just end up farming those 2 silver knights in anor londo)
    And the rune arc being active, also means that hosts always have some trick up their sleeve, wether it is a lot of extra levels, a large health pool, bloodborn healing mechanics, or buffed phantoms.
    TL:DR
    An invaders behaviour, build and internet connection can make the fight so unfun to the point that for the average player disconnecting is the only way to continue to play the game. Elden Ring has created a pretty bad PvP scene due to frequent ganks and no rewards filtering invaders untill there are only the most tryhard left. Combing all of this, it is not suprising a lot of people do not have fun with the PvP in elden ring, and hence complain online.
    Having Rune arcs work as embers and opening up worlds, together with adding covenants would make the PvP scene a whole lot more healthy

    It makes me laugh a little, if you're going to attack someone's world, it means that you're probably well prepared for it.
    Most often, people attacked do not create their characters for PvP and are not well versed in the game's mechanics, so killing two noobs shouldn't be a problem for you, unless you lack of skill?
    The problem is not PvP, but how the invaders forcefully look for weak players so they can kill them.
    If they're looking for a challenge so much, maybe it's worth taking on someone at your own or higher level, or not crying when a few weak players screw you over... unless you lack the skill ;_;
    I've never been into PvP, but I always found it easier to kill someone when I was the invader than when someone was invading me (I had to for platinum the souls 2-3)

    Personally my favorite PvP mechanic out of all the fromsoft games is BloodBorne's.
    PvP isnt always an option.
    There are maps/locations after the beginning of the game where you can be invaded, however there is always an NPC lady on the map ringing a bell...
    You find her,
    Take her out,
    and boom. PvP is no longer a worry.
    Even in Coop if you took out the bell ringing lady you were fine.
    By certain maps I mean basically the first few locations you were safe. This gave newer players the chance to figure out the game a bit before being opened up to PvP risk. Passed about 30% into the game the maps start having PvP introduced to you. Which even when in Coop, is optional.
    Imo this one is the best.

    I think this video doesn't mention something that is pretty important to consider: There is a big difference between a PvE centered build and a PvP one. For example, most greatsword/hammer users would have trouble hitting a real player except by spamming one specific attack (if you know, you know). Some weapons straight up do not have an attack that could reasonably hit an invader but work really well against NPC bosses. Although you do technically opt into PvP when you play coop, isn't it a little bit unreasonable to say "skill issue" when someone who is doing PvE fights has reasonably created a PvE build. Most heavy weapon STR based builds are nowhere near as good as say the DEX bleed builds or twin spears.

      That would mean invaders would have to live in a world where they only play with people who are ready from them. They don't want that.

    The frustration comes from the fact that Learning from a death is a core part of the game. Dying to an enemy npc is fine, because you know what to do when you go back. You can find a weakness, or just sneak by if your build isn't suitable for fighting such enemies (I sneak around a lot of issues I don't wanna be bothered with)
    Say you wanna play with your friend. You both run around and enjoy the exploration (the map is beautiful imo) and then BOOM, some crazy strong player with all the end game loot spawns in with a very min/max build that slaughters other players in a split second. You then die along with your friend and have to go all the way back to collect your runes that may or may not get you a grand total of ONE level up.
    Seems like your average Souls experience, but the difference is that you didn't really learn anything other than overpowered player is overpowered. You likely have never seen what they're using before, don't know where the counter is, and said counter is probably more endgame shit. So prepare to get invaded by half the playerbase before even getting that item that you needed just to beat ONE player.
    Now you have it, only for you to have a new issue because the invader you got now plays COMPLETELY different. You then sit there in your loading screen and realize what you went to grab is pointless because the likelihood that you'll run into the same build is pretty low, and it's even less likely that it'll be the same person.
    They start becoming just roadblocks that you can probably get over eventually, but you're never going to solve that problem until you've already beaten the game and have no reason to continue playing anymore.

    In my case, i wanted to play Elden Ring in coop with my friend. I'm not a Souls player, the only fromsoft games i've played were the Armored Core serie and Sekiro (that i've platined.) I wanted to try it out with Elden Ring.
    Invaders were so common that i wasn't having fun anymore. I completely abandonned the game after Godrick the Grafted.

      Same. Haven't even gotten past the first actual boss lol.
      But if you're still interested in playing Soulsborne games, especially in coop, I recommend Code Vein or Remnant 2. There's no invasions in them and they're very fun, even for more casual players.

      How about you just beat the game by yourself, or figure out how to beat invaders since you'll always have a numbers advantage?

      You can always tell when Elden is the only thing that makes a commenter feel special. They get to the word "friend" and think it's just a game mechanic.

    What an invasion is and how they work: "I'm here to fuck up your day because I've got nothing better to do than be an ass*, and the only way you can avoid it is play offline or without full HP."
    Dark souls 3 did it the best. At least then you could make the enemies in the levels see the invaders.
    *Except the arena and the rare goober/honorable invader that helps you out.

      No. Keep invasions and get rid of password matchmaking

    I've spent so much time joining random peoples games in PvE that I've just accepted that someone is going to invade, which is why I've just learned to be aggressive as f*** because I'm a guest, and I only benefit from being there, even if I die. But through this tactic, I've won a vast majority of PvP fights since returning to the game. I still don't like invasions, but I deal with it.

      Like for real, not often I get summoned to help someone through the scenario, then one invader shows up and the other two back of like they had just seen the boogieman, I run to the red gost and kill him, like he´s just other player, because he is.
      The skill gap is not a real isue when there are blues in the play, as they tend to be just as skilfull and prepared as the invarders.
