  • At this Week’s End, I’m taking a look at five plants that are being cool this week. Some have been growing well, and some have been blooming, but they have all been doing something to get them noticed. So, join me, with a tasty beverage at hand, for a bit of a visit at this Week’s End.
    The five plants I’m featuring this week include an orchid, some succulents, and three Hoyas. The orchid is a Zygopetalum which has never before bloomed for me. Then a look at my Lithops collection, some of which have started showing new growth. And of course, some Hoyas, Hoya occultata, Hoya deykeae, and Hoya sigillatis.

    Wonderful video! I loved all these plants even the quirky Lithops. The deykeae and the sigillatis are both on my Wishlist. Yours are beyond gorgeous and so pleasing to the eye! Many thanks for the tips and information you gave. The close ups of your plants are amazing, as always. Well done! 👌🪴🥰

      It seems to like more light that I thought at first. And food, yeah it definately likes the food.

    Thanks for your advice about Hoya Sigilatis. I think it is a Hoya that requires high humidity. Again great photography.

      Thanks for adding your comment. I have my H sigillatis in ambient room humidity of approximately 50%. It may appreciate more humidity, but it'll do fine at arounbd 50%.

    I am not a huge Hoya person but I rooted my sigilatis cutting in Pon. It was rooted and did absolutely nothing for a good six months. Suspecting it had flat mites, I put the plants under the hot water shower for a few minutes then emptied the reservoir. I few weeks later, there was new growth. It is growing nicely now. I have to move it from under the grow lights since it is sun stressing too much. Your orchid is beautiful!

      I'm glad to hear you found the culprit. Since it can be tough to kill all the flat mites and their eggs, keep an eye open for signs of their resurgence. I do a bit of a treatment every six to nine months. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience.

    I grow my sigillatis in semi hydro with Pon , it was one leaf when I got it, 6 mos later, now has 10 leaves and roots growing out the bottom of the pot. I am in Maryland so not much different conditions than you, but you can't argue this kind of growth!

      That's great. H sigillatis, once it starts growing, is a fun plant. It's one of my favorites. Good luck with yours. Thanks for watching and contributing your comment.

    Cool👍🏽! Im a hoya head. Your hoyas and other plants look so healthy! Ive gone thru many hoyas, agloenemas, philodendrons, etc., before figuring out how to care for them. I have a few hoyas on my wish list, but of course, waiting for some price drops. I had a sigillatis cutting but i overwatered, same with the daykaei. Thanks for sharing! Look forward to your next! Dee, thank you for watching and leaving your comment. I took me a while to get a handle on Hoyas. Aglaonemas and I got along pretty well from the start. Philodendrons are a whole other story - nothing but frustration there. I am trying again with a Ph tortum who will be making an appearance in an upcoming video.

    I started my Hoya obsession last spring with a Crassipetiolata cutting. I was hooked. The have a few more Hoya now I find at stores local. I saw your short on it and was wondering what you have yours planted in. Have you done vids on showing the potting mix and potting it up?

    • @PlantedInRI
      @PlantedInRI  3 месяца назад +1

      My H crassipetiolata started out in a bark and sphagnum mix in a net pot, and it did fine in that medium. About six months ago I transferred it to pon-ish and a self watering pot. I think it prefers the regular access to moisture. What brought about the biggest change was changing the food. Most super airy mixes for hoyas are nutrient poor so giving it regular feedings of really good nutrients made a big difference. Thanks for watching and leaving your comment and questions.

    Where do you usually get your hoyas from? I'm also in RI so I was wondering.

      How cool. Where in RI? I'm in EP. Locally, my favorite places are Briggs in N Attleboro and Peckham's in Tiverton. Logee's in Danielson CT is phenomenal - every Hoya I've purchased there has been healthy and has done well - well worth the drive. Many of my Hoyas came from online vendors, and I've had very few issues. If you want online recommendations, let me know. I also sell cuttings from time to time, so if you're looking for something in particular, I may have it. Thanks for watching and leaving your comment.

      @@PlantedInRI I'm in Providence, east side! So pretty close. I went to Briggs a month-ish ago but didn't find a great selection of hoyas. I'll have to try again. I've yet to visit Logee's but that's on my list this spring! I'd love some online recs. If you do an online purchase experience review on RUclips, would love to see that too :) Thanks for the vids!!! And yes, I'd be interested in cuttings in the future haha I'm out of my plant budget for this month.

      Jennie - In the winter Briggs scales back their Hoya selection, as the warmer weather comes, they'll have more; but bear in mind that they are fairly standard, nothing that could be called uncommon Logee's will blow you away. You can check their website for a preview. I do have some store reviews on my website. Drop me an email and I'll send you some store recommendations.

    The internet told me to only water my lithops twice a year! I couldn't resist, they are living in the window with my orchids..

    • @PlantedInRI
      @PlantedInRI  3 месяца назад

      What I found talked about two "seasons" when you water Lithops, so that's what I've been doing. Right now the old leaves are drying up, so no water now. But once they're gone I'll start again. I'm no Lithops expert and this is something of an experiment. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
