When you said the last shot was 100% chance to hit the X-Com player in me half expected it to miss.
Honestly wouldn't surprise me haha.
my mind was basically thinking "its gonna dodge and not deal enough damage isnt it"

“I said we decreasing today.”
The way I like looking at this kind of run is if Julian was successful in obtaining the spark prototype, and having the xcom operatives be Julian cyborgs, but using them sparingly. Julian's quest to overthrow Advent and eventually the entire alien empire.
Oh man, that could be a cool story. Like Julian wipes out XCOM and takes their place LOL. He keeps one human slave to use the skulljack when he needs to haha.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast Julian builds a T-800 to fucking stab an officer and connect him to SKYNET. The codex proceeds to get annihilated by SKYNET's superior processing power and the tower spontaneously explodes lmao
Yes I took inspiration from Max0r how did you tell

I like to think Julian is Skynet and wouldn't actually wipe out every human, only Xcom and even then some would be spared like engineers n doctors.

My first time finishing XCOM2 was with _Cowboy_ - a russian ranger whom I later saved in the character pool:
> enter last room. Complete cluster fuck. Nope out of there.
> notice there is a bottleneck at the entrance of last room.
> take cover before bottleneck ... let 'em come.
> use mind control on Archons (high evasion, good melee and destroys enemy cover) to pester the shit of out the enemy.
> Wave after wave my forces are getting hammered.
> last Avatar closes the gap and attacks me.
> last avatar gets shot. shot misses, but superior stock gets him some 3 damage and he teleports.
> Avatar teleports right next to _Cowboy_
> Triggers Overwatch on _Cowboy_
> Triggers the Repeater.
> Last Avatar gets shot in the face and executed.
> Won the game.
_Cowboy_ has been with me on every single playthrough ever since. He's covered every role but a sniper.
Really love that ruski!
Edit: WoT added psychological traumas... in my head, _Cowboy_ is having PTSD due to all the repressed memories he has of past campaigns, yet still is a total Grim Reaper on the battlefield - which fits with the Russian fatalistic and melancholic mindset.
I love this post, buddy. Probably my favourite thing about XCOM is the dynamic storytelling and characters you get, like Cowboy. If you've got any posters of him, you should drop one in the discord so I can see what he looks like. :)
@@TheDriftersBroadcast that might just happen. Who knows...
@@DeltaPi314 similar ranger experience actually. The true leader of xcom Rodrigo “paladin” Soto almost every mission was done with him and he was a part of every assassination mission against chosen and was the equivalent of doom guy
My introduction to XCOM began with videos of RUclipsr Elegorko and his play throughs.
I still remember a lot of his characters such as Marco Polo the scout, but the most memorable was Russian sniper Kerzhskov named after football player, so whenever he missed it was just that, a Kerzhakov
Just don't let him near Ukraine, I don't want to know what he would do.
The repeaters are always worthwhile, triggering a 15% chance per shot is absurd. If you're entire squad is firing that's means your chances go up by ~12% per non execution shot and the likelihood of all of them missing/not executing is like 40%. Absolutely dominates the chosen and the kings
Yeah, I've been sleeping on repeaters way too long. I usually go for scopes + expanded mags or autoloaders, but I think I've been missing out.
You are right about the repeaters, but the chances don't really go up with missed/non-execution shots. That's a common mistake known as gambler's fallacy. The chance of 6 hits getting at least one execution roll is 62.3%, like you said, but if you have 5 non-executions already, the chance of the next hit being an execution is still 15% -- probability ignores the history.
@@evilbob840 That would be true, but Xcom 2 has a normalization-algorithm running, that adjusts the probability of an action based on the success or failure of preceding actions. Repeated failures actually increase the chance of success until the chances have evened out, so missing a 75% chance shot means the following 75% has more like a 85% hit chance, while hitting a 25% means another shot would have a lowered chance.
@@xyxxanx9810 Oh? I knew Darkest Dungeon had an algorithm like that, but I didn't think XCom 2 did. Another wrinkle: we aren't talking about hits, but crits after a hit has been scored. So, do the successful hits "reset" it back to true probabilities for the crit roll?
@@evilbob840 Honestly, I have no idea, I´ve watched a video about different RNG-mechanisms in games years ago pre DLC release, and I don´t remember if it said anything about repeaters, I just found it interesting, that the developers altered their RNG in order to fit the players bias.
"Can't see, doesn't exist."
Not quite wrong though. On commander enemies steer away if too many are active (and from my expierence with modding: Some enemies start to idle when way too many are active and in sight).
And well, breaking line of sight is more often than not the better tactic
Sometimes cowardice and genius are the same thing. :D
I did my first playthrough (no WOTC) a few months ago just on normal. And noticedcafter i aggroo a new group sometimes some of them would just run away for no reason and hide.
@@robertharris6092 yeah, despite what some or most people says, XCOM is heavily rigged in your favor, why I prefer to play on higher difficulties to even things out.
If anyone says this game is unfair. yes it is. for the enemy.
@@Superschokokeks bullshit flies both ways, but ADVENT gets the worst of it, that's for sure
Sparks are the most powerful class imp, they good at offence and defense, immune to psionic effect and many environment hazard, and they can jump to the roof from the ground. Overcharge gave them ability to either boost their damage output or movement range, I often use them to run across the entire the field to save the ally on the other side or get in to flanking position. Other than that, the bombard skill can be used as artillery, it can shoot anywhere on the map as long as some ally is looking at this place, I'm not sure if its a bug or something but I once fired all my bits at the EMP device+ a few blaster bomb on avenger defense mission from the ramp because the target can always be seen in the map, instant victory.
I need to try that bombard cheese. That sounds amazing haha.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast also if you don’t mind install mods, Titan Fall Legion+ it’s weapon mods can completely broken the game, probably not the author intention but still….
Equip Legion chassis gave spark abilities and one of them is gun shield, which will return fire with 100% accuracy no matter how far the enemy is upon get fired on, I had tested the few kind of damage that can not be returned, they are electrical, melee and psionic, any other damage will all trigger return fire, but shield only last 1 turn and will need 1 turn to recharge. Sounds lame, but if you use it alongside with sacrifice skill which spark will redirect any incoming fire toward ally within the range to you, and you have all your allies stand in range, result will completely broke the game.
The if enemy shot missed legion will not return fire.
Some area damage can still trigger return fire, muton grande, Mec missiles, hunter’s charge shot etc, haven’t try to parry sectopot’s wraith cannon but it should work too.
@@spaceerror_3571 Lmao that sounds pretty ridiculous. I'll definitely have a look into the mod.
Psi ops and rangers: allow us to introduce ourselves
@@icicle_ai personally prefer templars to psi ops but yeah rangers are beyond dumb
The Turret Mistake is understandable, they are automated turrets, for this defense they are just networked in with the SPARKs
I like your thinking, but I still felt like a cheater for using them haha.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast They don't have a non-shooting option, so even if you put them on overwatch every turn there was a chance they'd get a kill. So unless you only moved SPARKs and then ended turn with moves left on the turrets, there wasn't really a way to avoid it. At least you tried to go back to a previous save.
@@Sora623898 Yeah, in future runs I've just been ending the turn early to avoid using them at all.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast My question is, why even build the defense Matrkx?
Do they increase the chance to evade the UFO?
Otherwise they seem useless to me. Even worse a drain on resources.
@@JonatasAdoM Aside decreasing the chances of UFO attacks, they also become live turrets at the entrance to the avenger when doing base defenses.
With an engineer, you get 4 turrets and they all have squad sight. So imagine 4 extra players on the field able to provide support and gunfire to kill the advent.
Shame that in my first playthrough, never got to use them after the first and only one.
34:54 I like how the stream chat on the left unanimously says "using turret is fine, it's a robot too".
Really cool challenge run. Always fun to see how people beat games in ways that were never intended.
Seeing Xcom 2 without mods hits diffrent man like sure the 500 mods i had on my first playthrough glitched the game a little or crashed it but like soo many this are missing like the sparks not being able to share rockets with one another or looking like warhammer dreadnoughts using laser rifles...
Yeah, I hadn't played a (mostly) unmodded campaign in years before I started these challenge runs. I'm quite enjoying playing the game more or less vanilla style.
you gotta link the dreadnaught mod now buddy
Then there's me who has always preferred good ole vanilla. Except when I finished 100% of achievements in Enemy Unknown (before XCOM 2 got announced) and tried my hand at Long War
Damn i need to find some of these warhammer mods you speak of
I'd like to think this is the story of one man (the rookie) and his army of mechs fighting back to take earth from the xcom alien invasion.
"They defeated the old army... so I will BUILD a new one!" I love it. :D
The Assassin using your spark as cover is honestly a power move.
Its interesting to see people who have not put as much look into the games AI mechanics play though this.
Its refreshing in a sense.
Well, I never claimed to be the best XCOM player in the world haha. :P
Turrets are ok, they're:
1. Robots
2. Part of the environment
I don't remember if sparks can get a haywire protocol, but if they could, I don't see why using it to your advantage would be cheating somehow anyway, it's like shooting at a barrel to deal more damage to some poor ADVENT shmuck. It's just a smart use of your resources
Yeah, I didn't think it was a big deal and it seems people agree which is good. No haywire protocol for SPARks, unfortunately.
You know, it'd be interesting to see you do this challenge again but replace "Only SPARKs" with "Only Robots", which would include Geth, EWRs, and SHIVs, if you'd be so inclined. I can probably make a Modlist at some point and throw it your way, if you're interested.
I'm definitely interested. A modlist sounds great.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast Good to hear. There's a Mod Class I wanna do and finish first before I make any sort of "Robots Only" Modlist, considering this support class would be nice for such a run. Definitely more variety than a "Sparks Only" run.
@@cerebralcloud92 Sounds good. Hit me up when you're ready. :)
@@cerebralcloud92 slap in the Mechatronic Warfare mod in the modlist, that gives sparks so much more options
@@cerebralcloud92 also the enhanced robotics facility v3 mod... actually you mind if I get started on the modlist first before handing it over to you? I'm excited to do this. I promise I won't overpower the sparks too much.
So I decided to calculate the chances of execution happening each turn assuming all the sparks could do it and they all fired once
Basic: 26.5%
Advanced: 46.9%
Superior: 62.3%
For fun though, let's include overdrive's potential 3 shots for each spark
Basic: 60.3%
Advanced: 85.0%
Superior: 94.6%
Conclusion: repeater is op
that's not even mentioning the continental bonus that ranks up each weapon upgrade by a level, with superior repeaters getting a 20% chance to instakill
heck, on my first ever WoTC campaign, i got that continental bonus, gave my reaper a superior repeater and extended mag and he could get 7 shots each with a 1 in 5 chance to instakill when using banish
needless to say, killing the alien rulers on the same mission i found them, in a single action, was pretty trivial after that
XCOM but humanity has decided to automate the war industry
Well, if you've got giant, killer death robots, might as well use them, right? Haha.
I just realized that the consequences of your repeater luck in this play through was the bad luck for the specialist only play through. This is the true nature of rng
Just wait for the grenadier run. You ain't seen nothing yet LOL.
This one sparked my curiosity
Killing me.
I honestly don't get why people don't just go "at every opportunity"
if you can use a spark instead, you do. Need a human for a skulljack? A spark can't do it, so it doesn't violate the "Use sparks as much as possible at every opportunity" rule.
That does make sense, but I think it just doesn't sound catchy enough haha.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast Your way was definitely much better.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast It's only once, but for the Forge mission, you could have used the Advent/resistance fighter/volunteer to carry the body.

For real. We haven't seen the last of him, though. :D

@@TheDriftersBroadcast yeah, just gives you time to check your phone between missions.
I’ve got enough mods stuffed in my PC XCOM that it isn’t much different, honesty.
@@MSF_Soldier_Alligator Yeah, I had to end up getting rid of almost all cosmetic and voice mods, as it was slowing my game down way too much. Feels bad.
Damn I felt you at the end when you just had to target the avatar as there were to many enemies I remember when I first beat the game and crossed my finger as I knew that if my sniper missed his 35 percent shot I would lose in the next turn
4:59 is just so swag the bot kneeling to plant x4.
Pushing those little buttons with his giant metal plates for fingers LOL.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast In Xcom1 they would be invisible the final mission's fun the avatar sacrificing himself pushing out nothing and the camera zooming into a worried nothing.
@@inybisinsulate LOL I kinda wish we could see this now haha.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast I did it with SHIVs they're also absent in all the cutscenes. Just unfortunate you can't get them in the tutorial.
@@inybisinsulate That sounds pretty awesome lol. Similar thing happens in this game when you're walking down the corridor to attack the alien base. Might be a future challenge run, eh? :D
Wtf I've never seen a spark plant x4 that looks goofy as hell
I hadn't even thought about it, but you're right. :D

xcom 2: you will have access to sparks only in the late game
I've been bingeing these type of videos on your channel and I'm addicted. Keep up the great work, no doubt you'll be big one day bro
Thanks so much! Glad you're enjoying!
Each memorial segment left me bawling. Bravo.
its moments like these that i always bring as many repeaters to the mission as possible. saved my squads more times than i can count with clutch executions of rulers, chosens and what ever is high threat. the biggrst XCOM shots ever with a repeater? a medic in overwatch anihilates a whole pod of 3 codexes. i wished i could have clipped that!
That sounds pretty awesome haha. The repeaters certainly saved us in this one.
My biggest shot was reaper killing the full hp archon ruler with a regular shot cus repeater proked.
meanwhile;
"WHAT? THAT UNIT WAS ON FULL HP AND WAS THE TANKIEST UNIT WE HAD AND THEY GOT ONE SHOT!"
"That's XCOM, baby!"
The strength of using the turret by accident wasn't that it killed a muton, but that it re-seeded the next move's RNG, in turn allowing for your uncanny luck in extinction shots at the end of the game ;)
discovered your channel with the templar squad a few days ago, this is actually the second video i watch, but looking at your uploads, it makes me very happy to see someone still playing XCOM 2
Thanks a lot. XCOM 2 is probably my favourite game of all time, so I'm happy to still be playing lol.
I can't believe you actually won that final mission. 3 full power chosen, 2 sectopods, a gatekeeper and of course the avatars. Good God almighty I hope you bought lottery tickets afterwards.
I would love to see you do this run over with the proficency sparks which adds 3 spark classes so they aren't all the same
Wow that's going to be awkward on the way back.
Medic: "You tried to kill me!"
These are fun to watch! I hope you'll upload more challenges in the future! 💜
Cheers. Working on the next one already. :)
Great narration, thanks for sharing this with us.
Come on, you had the perfect excuse to call the Medic "Heal bot" and you didn't take it? LOL
I'm pretty bad with names haha.
Or of course “Doc”
I begin my journey to rewatch every single one of your Xcom challenge videos.
The issue with the rockets being blocked by objects on the floor can be solved by pressing up like you do to change heights when moving/aiming, it's awkward and doesn't work perfectly, but it basically sets it to explode in the air instead of trying to pathfind on the floor and getting blocked by debris. Means you can take way better shots by aiming over any smaller obstacles, just in case any one else is having this issue.
For some reason the rocket aim defaults to where it's as if you're controlling a player and making a movement, so it goes by the same rules as that would until you press up.
i genuinely can't go back to vanilla sparks after using mods for them
I'm the same way with some mods in Skyrim. Once you know what you're missing, going back is impossible haha.
Haha its so cool to hear how much you improved in your script reading skills. Here I can even picture you sitting in a dark room trying your best to be as clear as possible with what you are saying.
You sound much more confident in your newer videos
Man sure is nice to look back at the beginnings
I'm going to be using this video as evidence in my growing case about why repeaters are the best weapon mods in the game. Thank you for your service
If there's a memorable quote for this whole series, it's this:
"That's XCOM, baybee!" -Drifter
Nice work ! :)
You've finally done something good ahah i'm joking, this was a great video and i finally understood some things about this game lol
keep it up my man :3

Good old Arnie, always -brings- brought us safely to the chopper!
Assasin taking cover using bulwark Spark ahahah, i am dying. That's fucking genius, assasin. Well played.
Awesome stuff dude - repeaters ftw !
Repeaters are great on any unit you don't expect much from. Instantly, your toy poodle has a 5-20% chance of becoming Kali incarnate. I had a rookie take out the Viper King from about 3/4 hp before that way. Other units who are up with the power curve can benefit more from expanded mags or scopes, but there's no better way to accept a unit having low base damage than making health completely irrelevant.
43:56 Lol, the absolute audacity of this lady!
Sec “Cower and run” Julian “Y’all hear something “
They shall know no fear haha.

chosen: are the scariest enemies in the game
this dudes random spark: kills the hunter with one shot in the last mission like a boss
31:59: "Begin evasive maneuvers" *the avenger moves a few hundred miles and then sits and waits for the UFO to find it* lmao
On legendary, I held off on doing the dlc because I had better thing to do than the dlc. The next mission the berseker queen killed it, and I couldn't afford the 150 supplies to make a new. When I could, it died on the next mission as well. Go figure
I feel you. I always go Commander difficulty because Legendary is just too brutal haha.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast here some advice. Legendary isn't to much worst than commander.
Here are the most brutal moments you will face are the beginning missions. Like the sectoid on the first mission. But he can be taken down like any other. If he gets a mind control in, fall back. With no mission timer, you can just fall back until the it's over, then attack if you do this, use the until closest to him to try and flank him
Next is to keep up on your research race. If you don't have mag weapons by the time Spector show up, your gonna have a rough time.
If you can kill a chosen, kill them. The hunter is the best one to kill first if you can. Having his sniper rifle on hand disregards the sniper research line, the hardest line in my opinion as the hunter sniper is more powerful than the plasma lance. And the hunter pistal is pritty good until the alien ruler pistal is fully researched.
Do not integrate the dlc. You want the alien ruler weapons as soon as possible. Never have a ranger not equip the hunter axe. That free action is wonderful, and it has all the abilities of the regular sword.
Keep the one gun who's name I can't remember, that only has one shot. It is really powerful and makes vipers a joke. But once you get mag weapons, you don't need.
The shadow keep having a 100% to hit is great. It even better than the hunter pistal which pierce 5 armor.
Do not expand until you are ready to kill the assassin. You do not want to face her on the regular. If she is the first one to show up, well, yeah, good luck.
If you think you cannot complete a mission. Just do it and retreat right away. The punishment isn't nearly as bad as not doing it.
If there are guerilla ops you can't do, don't do them. If your men are hurt, they cannot fight. Even of the reward is good, or the dark event is bad, nothing is worst than a dead soldier.
Once you get plasma and emp, the game is a joke. You also have plenty of time to as legendary, the alien and research time are extended. So some enemies won't show up for a while.
I love you added honest man and the part of “misclicks” cause I do that shit all the time and it makes me feel bad to reload a save again lol
It's very easy to do. Especially when you've been playing way longer than you should have lol.
Also those wonderful moments when the cursor twitches and your soldier ends up a Knight's move away from cover.
@@MrZaranthan RIGHT! Or for cover you accidentally click right out of cover lol

Also im not sure if sparks get utility slots in vanilla but if they do, you can skulljack with them. You can see a screen but if you press enter it will still work
You had an opportunity for OG Arnie’s death, Drifter. A massive opportunity and I’m so upset. You could’ve played the Still Alive song from Portal as its eulogy song.
You may be about to get more upset when I tell you that I've never played any of the Portal games. :O
@@TheDriftersBroadcast bruh. I’m gonna follow you on your twitch now and demand this gets ratified as soon as you have the money to please an internet stranger like me with a random game request
What weapon attachments did you lean towards? Scope, Extended Mag, and Repeater sounds like the best possible combo, but I'm curious if you found something that worked better.
Your thinking is on the money. Scopes are a must because of the bad aim. And if there's not enough scopes for the squad, then a stock. I might have used a few auto loaders instead of expanded mags too, but both are useful. And repeaters I would prioritise putting on those who had a scope.
1:53 Oh yeah I forgot sparks can't skull jack... that suck...
Can't carry the Commander's AVATAR either. The skulljack I understand, but it makes no sense they can't carry somebody lol.

I watch your videos on repeat for enjoyment and always forget to mention at 13:51 I want to tell you. You are able to aim a little higher above ground level to make that shot lol.
Hair triggers and repeaters would've been so busted
I suspect you're right haha.
hey so, as someone who would like to attempt to replicate this, how did you get all of the sparks to start the game with?
It's a mod called "Starting Soldiers" - available on the Steam Workshop. I have a tutorial video on my channel on how to set the mod up that may help. Let us know how the run goes!
If you do this, I highly recommend Mechatronic Warfare. It makes sparks significantly better by giving them more options in their skill trees
@@TheDriftersBroadcast did you consider mechatronic warfare? Baseline sparks are kinda weak in WOTC, the buff you get from it might allow you to do a proper campaign instead of doing a Leeroy Jenkins Speed run. There are also mods allowing sparks to go on covert actions if you really want to go for a full campaign
@@ironboy3245 You're not the first one to suggest that mod. I'll definitely give it a go at some point.
@@TheDriftersBroadcast yeah i've been suggesting it to everyone who's been thinking of trying this run in the comments lmao
The repeater odds seem crazy until you realize that with three shots a turn you’ve actually got nearly 1/3 chance per spark(assuming overdrive for 3 shots)
Also that high health enemies are more likely to get executed bc by definition of having more health so they get shot more
I was quite sadface when I realized the overlay that takes up a third of the goshdang screen was gonna be there the ENTIRE video

hunter be like "our battle will be legendary" and dies immediately lmao
Well, it WAS legendary. Just not for the reason he expected LOL.
Could you maybe also do a challenge to see if you can beat xcom 2 war of the chosen using only advent soldiers (any type) and maybe a challenge of only using aliens ,
I'm pretty sure that if there was a situation that required a humanoid character into a mission, the game should make an effort to warn you of so. Like trying to capture the body at the ADVENT facility that's being used as a placeholder for the avatars.
While they have tried a few ways to make aggressive positioning beneficial, how commonly that just ends up activating the next pod makes that rarely seem worth it though. Which outside of the last room of the final mission, seems was a factor in most of the close call this run had.
True. Bad pod activation is usually always the reason things go bad. And I'm pretty impatient when I play, so it can be a bad combination at times haha.
An exercise in learning how busted repeaters are hahaha
I Love sparks ( third time watching this run)
I missed a 98% and a 92% percent now I'm trying to remember and appease the act that pissed of god.
Yeah, I looked at the footage. There's no way the Andromadon should have seen Arnie, but hay...that's the beauty of being the A.I. You can metagame ti'll the heat death of the universe. Like when the A.I just happens to knock out the only squadmate with medical capabilities, or revive protocol. But that's why I watch videos like this, so I can learn all the dirty little tricks the community has to offer...then rig the game worse than a night in Vegas, hopefully making the A.I cry so hard the devs get depression by proxy.
