this is probably my 50th time watching this series and honestly it’s the best. breaking the stereotypes against teenagers, that all we do is sit on our computers and we never go out, but this proves that not every teenager is like that. the first time i watched this it made me realise how beautiful oregon is, and now, going there and hiking broken top is first on my bucket list. thanks to this beautiful series, you’ve made me appreciate travelling so much more, and have inspired me to go outside tons more, no matter how dangerous it can be sometimes, thank you :)

You'll never see this, but I have to add it. In my photographic adventures across the Southwest, I developed several RULES or TRUTHS of hiking/climbing, and #1 is "Everything is bigger, steeper and further away than it looks." I had a very similar situation to yours when climbing to an archway on top of a sandstone mountain in Utah. A two-hour hike/climb wound up taking eight hours and getting heat prostration, with 2% phone battery left. Safe travels Natalie. Oh, and I hope you have a satellite beacon. It's an ace in the hole.

Brooke is right, though. Videos about people that had to be rescued always say that the number one thing people do when things go wrong is step off the trail too far. It looks like an easy climb down, or you walk away from the trail to go to the bathroom and then realize you don't know which way goes back to the trail. Use the buddy system if you have to pee on a hike - one person stands on the trail, you walk away but stay within shouting distance of them. If you get turned around heading back to the trail, stop and start shouting. Or just pee closer to the trail and don't worry about people looking. Who cares, everyone pees.

This story made me sooo anxious. I've had moments hiking where I started panicking without even being stuck or lost, so I can't even imagine. Ugghh.
I had a very similar experience when I decided to summit broken top to snowboard down it all alone. I ended up free soloing a section on the climb up. On the way down, where others repel, I purposely jumped off of the cliff onto the Bend Glacier (around 10 ft cliff) and self arrested with my ice axe as I was sliding down the glacier! Wasn’t as crazy as your story, but I totally understand what it’s like to make risky (and poor) decisions ALONE on top of a mountain!
