Y'all I started crying when the kid said, "I can't find my father," he didn't even know that his father was gone. He was so innocent. I hate that for them, hopefully they are living a good life now.

All my respect to the lifeguards; they looked for 45 minutes even when it could have been a false alarm but they wanted to be sure. That kind of commitment is so admirable. Not everyone could do their job. ALL MY ADMIRATION TO THEM.

Yes! They saved my parents’ lives once. They were stuck in a rip current. My parents taught us to swim sideways and not to the beach to get out of a rip at a very young age.

lifeguards dont see deaths nearly every day so are more fragile but it comes with the job just like every profession.

Tons of respect to the lifeguards. Losing someone right in front of you has to be a gut wrenching feeling and I hope none of them blame themselves. They train so hard just to keep people safe and they fly under the radar for appreciation. RIP Doctor, I have faith that your son will step up for your family and take care of them

They just have moved to Australia like a week and probably he must be starting his practice there as a doctor, and then this happened so unexpectedly. And on top of it, it's the man's birthday. They probably went to the beach to celebrate. This is just so sad. Just really devastating
this could be a reason to make basic swimming lessons mandatory all over the world
@@djh9816 what waste of money and time. Half the planet will never even see the ocean and it isn't hard to learn how to swim by yourself. It's a natural movement ingrained in your DNA. The fear of trying to swim is what holds people back.

Its not that much of a waste actually, just cause you won't ever see an ocean doesn't mean swimming is useless especially since there are lakes, rivers and man made bodies of water people can fall into. Imagine you are driving, lose control, survive the impact but die cause after your car crashed in the river you drown. Kind of a waste.
And besides safety it also can provide healthy recreational facilities or just fun. Obviously I don't agree there should be a universal standard, but maybe that some things or places like holiday hotels may have the right to refuse you entry if you can't show proficiency in swimming. (for hotels at the beach or with waterparks)

I'm so so glad they offer mental health services and make it clear that it is not weak to feel traumatized or upset. It's so devastating and my heart goes out to the victim's family, friends, and the lifeguards who fought so hard to bring him back. May he rest in peace.

I feel really bad for Tom. He took his eyes off for a SECOND, and never saw him again. I can’t imagine the weight on him in that moment. All the life guards, I just can’t imagine. They’re such amazing people. They save so many. Lose so little, yet that one loss weighs heavier than all the people they saved.
But why do you need to put the binoculars down just to do a radio call.. seems dumb to me honestly they should be trained that when someone clearly needs help never take eyes off of them no matter what

@@caramello7460 it’s easy to think that, and imagine yourself having a different outcome. But consider how many individuals they rescue in a day. You do have to grab the walki talki, and that’s when you would naturally glance down. I’m sure that action they’ve done a million times without losing visuals after that brief moment.
@@samanthagolper5268 I just thought that the more they do it the better they get at it, especially the way they described his condition.. the guy said himself that only his head was showing and kept going under.. with their training they should know that means the persons almost goneskies and not to take their eyes off..: some people just put their hands up etc for help and those are the ones that they themselves also know have some time left before things get real bad..
18 years old and given the responsibility of calming down a distressed family. Honestly god bless everyone of these people. They may not have saved him, but at least they found him and his family can lay him to rest.

imagine pulling a wet body out of water at complete dead weight, the immense strength of these people, and the incredible mental power they must have to do this job. Much MUCH love to these amazing people, and the love ones of the man.

As a former pool guard I have the ultimate respect for these guys... In 3 years of guarding I had 5 saves, and can remember almost everything about them. I doubt I will ever forget... and 4 of those were people who were helped to the side of the pool with no ill effects. 1 was an asthma attack in the water, she sucked in quite a bit of water struggling to breathe and we had to call an ambulance. But they in no way compare to fighting with tidal forces on an ocean beach, with constantly changing conditions and tens of thousands of people. And for them to have a safety record as high as it sounds is absolutely amazing, And the situation in this video is heartbreaking, because 2 guards knew they saw him having issues, but were unable to find him in the water. I mean that's the stuff of nightmares for a lifeguard.

I freaking LOVE that the lifeguard said if you’re still feeling bad about it by tomorrow it’s not a sign of weakness to reach out and talk to someone. There is anonymous phone lines etc. Like that’s amazing especially coming from a man because generally men struggle with expressing themselves unfortunately and for asking for help. What kind supportive people.

Imagine realizing your father or husband has died (on his birthday even) and having to wait for his body to be taken out of the water. The absolute horror. Poor family, absolutely heartbreaking. The lifeguards did everything they could and were amazing. Kudos to the volunteers for helping too!
It still horrifies me how the general public seem to lose all common sense and crowd around a dying man. Curiosity doesn't cut it as an excuse - people need to have some respect and mind their own business.
I agree. I'm a very curious person and I really like medical stuff and rescues even if it's disturbing, sad, gory, etc.. However I understand not only is it important to stay way back (like at least five car lengths maybe?) but to also keep quiet. These people are trying to save someone's life and go with specific procedures while also staying calm. If you're curious and want to stand by to see what happens, I feel like that's fine but give LOTS of space and be absolutely quiet.
When you see a rescue, the family of the victim is quiet possibly going to lose someone close to them, it's not entertainment.

I agree it is mortifying to me that people think it’s like a side show.peoples family is standing their hoping they live while a crowd is just stating why?
I can’t imagine how horrible it would be to have to give CPR to somebody that you know is already gone with no chance of coming back…
Speaking from experience, it's almost better. The guy I did CPR on was completely a lost cause, and when the paramedics ultimately brought out the white sheet it was easier to know that there was absolutely nothing else I could have done.
At work we always do CPR especially if the family is there. We want them to know that we tried everything.
It’s good especially with young kids who’s family have gone missing in the water if u give them COR it will at least make the family know that you tried and have done everything you can. Even knowing there’s no hope it’s just to reassure people that you tried and not just gave up even though you know there is no hope.
my grandpa was found dead Thanksgiving morning, past noon. his lips were blue. he was very dead already. my uncle had to perform CPR on him for twenty minutes after he called 911... anuerism while he slept at least he passed peacefully. RIP grandpa ❤️
it's not their job to declare that someone is dead, it is a bit weird that paramedics aren't actually on scene though

I was a lifeguard at a resort for a couple years in college. On days like the Fourth of July and Labor Day you can barely see the bottom of the pool because of all the heads in the water. I can only imagine how hard it is scan a literal ocean full of people while waves are breaking every couple seconds. These men and women have all of my respect

Unfortunately that’s a misconception some people have, that wanting to talk is a sign of weakness when it’s 100% not weakness. It actually takes a lot of strength and courage to speak up and ask for help or ask to talk to someone.🖤

Such a sad story but certainly a cautionary tale… he died on his birthday a week after him and his family immigrated, I truly hope his loved ones are doing well.

i know your comment is 8 months old and this show is even older than that, but i read in an article from 2007 that his family moved back to mongolia right after his death, because he was the breadwinner of the family and the mother couldn’t do it on her own. :( really tragic. hopefully the kids and mother are doing better now, though.
Dying on your birthday is probably one of the worst days you can die on.

I feel bad for the life guards and the family Public Service Announcement: lifeguards are only human they cannot be expected to see everyone. They will miss a couple times so PLEASE STAY BETWEEN THE FLAGS AND OUT OF BACKPACKERS.
I agree with you, honestly it's sad to see this happening but like you said there human. Sometimes I think people would forget that lifeguards have a mind of there own and people think that they have to be perfect because they have to save lives since it's there job. But a lot of the time lifeguards have so much on there plate that mistakes will be made and people would shame them for that. All we can do is follow there rules and try to be as safe as possible when swimming in the ocean.
And for everyone’s sake, don’t go in the water alone, or at all, if you can’t swim. Even at waist deep you can be knocked over and/or sucked out.

It’s because of the rips, on the surface it looks calmer but beneath the surface is where the current is that pulls you out. That’s the point of the flags. People see waves within the flags and think that’s too harsh and look down the beach at calmer water and head there not knowing or understanding enough about water.
The camera crew did a wonderful job of not filming the man who passed away. thank you for the respect.

This is the anniversary of my little brother drowning, July 19th. He was in a small lake at a roped off beach. There were 2 lifeguards on duty but they were sitting under a tree because it was hot and they wanted some shade. I've wondered many times through the years how messed up they had to have been after losing a 7 year old in shallow water. My brother went to the beach with the kid across the street and his mom. She told my mom she'd watch the boys. I wondered how she's felt all these years later? I know they moved not too long after Mark died maybe a year later, if that. I'm 62 now and still miss my baby brother.

I actually think the bondi camera crew and sound guy filming the dead body being dragged in front of the family of the dead man is more disturbing tbh. like how dystopian to see your dead father’s body being filmed for a TV show

I saw the police pulling a dead body from the Hudson River and parents were literally lifting their kids so they could see better. As soon as I realized what was happening, I moved on. So disturbing....

This is actually a really old clip, it occured in 2007. Newspapers from that time reported the family went back to theyr original country the week afteras the father was the only income they had
I remember when this first aired on telly, it was a massive episode and everyone I remember talking to about it said that they ended up tearing up during it. It was just so heartbreaking to see them work so hard trying to find and help him and the man unfortunately lose his life. I think it was the first death shown on the show from memory and, despite people drowning more commonly than we'd like on Aussie beaches, to have every step recorded as they so desperately looked for him was so heartbreaking.
I can't imagine how they feel, knowing they were so close to rescue, but yet so far. May he rest in peace, and I'm sorry for his family.

@@gimpyrules6714 I was a beach lifeguard for a single summer. I quit after the 30'th person I rescued within 1 month that could not swim. Not was a poor swimmer. Legit could not swim and they went into the ocean. It makes no sense to me. People have no fear for some reason.

I've seen this quite a few times now. Every time it breaks my heart. As Australians, we learn at an early age to respect the water, stay between the flags, don't go into the water if we can't swim, watch for rips, etc. But for those who come from other countries, especially landlocked countries, I understand how the attraction of a beach like Bondi can be too much. My heart goes out to the lifeguards who searched for this man and in particular those who found him. A huge healing hug to the man's family who made the heartbreaking decision to show how their loved one left this world. Kudos to the production team for being mindful of the family while putting this segment. It is a stark reminder that tragedy can occur in an instant no matter how much we try to prevent it.
These lifeguards felt they missed this one. But, these guys prevent hundreds of others from the same outcome. It's strange how "prevention" doesn't always seem like a saved life, but it is. Much respect to this amazing team.
I lived at Bondi for 13 years and the amount of untimely deaths leaves the area quite creepy at night, the dark water at night sends a chill down your spine.

I agree, Green Eyes. This is the type of incident that causes nightmares for any first responder. But especially for the lifeguards. They saw him in the water alive then had to bring him out dead in front of his family. It’s an absolute hopeless and devastating feeling!

Or just stick to the pool instead of the ocean. So many times these people the Bondi lifeguards are rescuing either don't know how to swim or are weak swimmers that can't handle anything deeper than chest deep water. Lack of common sense is ridiculous.
Yep why even get into the ocean if you can’t swim at all. It’s just common sense. Or at least stay in between the flags closer to the shore line.
This is just proving that they aren’t miracle workers but they are incredible. They risk their lives every single day to save others it’s miraculous that this was there first tragic death in 5 years it just proves how incredible these men are and they deserve more praise for their efforts incredible I have so much respect for every single one of you and you should take pride in what you do because it is extraordinary and you deserve everything in your lives because you have given a second chance at life to so many all the best in the future ❤️

It just shows how important swimming is for everyone. Sad that there still are people who dont get the importance of being able to swim... Its not about fun, its about being safe.

How couldn't you be so devastated for the family. It wasn't easy to migrate from Mongolia and tried your best to get family to Australia for a better life. Then this happened on his birthday. Life is really unpredictable. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
they probably had their visas revoked too and sent back to Mongolia within a few weeks/months. They will have been allowed in on the grounds that their husband/father was a skilled worker. If he's passed away then they're probably not eligible anymore.

The sad thing is, drowning isn't always loud with lots of screaming and splashing. Especially for people that don't know how to swim. One of the first things they do after panicking is suck in a deep breath because they're freaking out. Boom.. mouth full of water. It mutes their voice and they slip under silently. That's why it's so important to keep your eyes open when you haved loved ones in the water. The ones that can AND can't swim, adults AND children.. you never know what could happen..

Yeah, it seems the mother was there also. She should have had enough sense to at least go in with her husband, or maybe suggest he shouldn't go in if he can't swim.
Drowning is almost always silent. We make new guards watch videos of actual drownings that were caught on CCTV cameras to drive this point home.

My heart breaks for the family. These lifeguards were incredible and did absolutely everything they could. It's devastating but accidents happen especially in open water

Don't know why I started to watch this but wish I hadn't. Tears were leaking from my eyes as my heart went out to his family and the lifeguards. A moment in time never forgotten. Lifeguards are modern day heroes and the next time they yell at you to move, do it immediately without hesitation. Kudos to these saviours. My thoughts with this young family in a new country...

It really is incredible that there is not a drowning nearly every day off that beach. With an average of thousands to tens of thousands of beach goers each day, the fact that there is only an official drowning once every few years is astounding. These lifeguards do an amazing job and I feel terrible that a single drowning weighs so heavily on them. Keep up the good work ladies and gents. You save lives virtually every day and the statistics prove out that you can't save literally everyone. RIP to the man and his family and hope the lifeguards find a measure of peace quickly as well.
I love that the council offers counseling for the lifeguards. Its important. They need to be taken care of too. And its not weakness to need to talk to someone after such an event.
Poor lifeguards they can feel that they are responsible for someone’s death coz they didnt c them etc, they do the best they can and are underrated. They know to perform cpr and how to handle swimmers. U dont realise how vital lifeguards are until ur in that position when ur relative/friend is in trouble in the water. Such a sad story, think the lifeguards need a drone to launch if a report of drowning to give an aerial view, would save time waiting for a helicopter.

100%, my dji drone takes not even 2 minutes to set up and launch. within 5 minutes of a report they could have searched around the entire zone. definitely could mean the difference between life and death

They were using a freaking drone on the beaches last yr trying to make sure ppl were social distancing & had masks on! 😂
We did neither & just smiled waved at the drones. Half expecting to have our hands slapped for non compliance in the great outdoors back at the parking lot.

So, if they can use drones at the beach for that crap, they can certainly employ them to actually save lives.

From my calculations, this episode was 16 years ago. They said he was 40 years old and born in 1965. That would mean he would be 56 now (so it was 16 years ago). 16 years ago there probably weren’t advanced drones available to the public. If there were drones like that, the film crew would have had them. I’d bet a lot that they own drones currently.

This is so sad. He died on his birthday, pronounced dead in front of his family and his body was not found until 2-5 hours later. My man was a doctor. He helped patients recover.

Still sad and though clearly no fault of the lifeguards since they were combing the water looking for a person they thought to be in trouble, oddly go vanish. For forty five minutes they searched for person unconscious, floating, struggling, underneath the waves and found nothing. No it's not their fault, still heartbreaking for them and it's sad. I went swimming at Bondi Beach in 1990.
Never went far in the water, never saw anyone taking chances an swimming out of their depth.
Since then, tragedy after tragedy.

I don't know how these lifeguards can keep track of any one person and know how long it's been since they were seen. They are true heroes and truly amazing.

We can never forget that they also put their own lives at risk to rescue people, day after day. There was nothing they could do. He was missing for 3hours and his family didn’t tell the lifeguards until 3hours later. They searched endlessly and the outcome was devastating. May he rest in peice.

Someone commented they watched a longer video. And either the father went swimming by his own ir the family left earlier and he stayed to swim. It is sad that they didn't see the danger letting someone who can't swim in the ocean go alone into the water.

These lifeguards are true hero's they are very young, and handled this devastating situation well.
My heart sank when the son reported his dad missing even though I knew what had happened. My heart and prayers go out to that family and to the lifeguards. Lifeguards = heroes and sometimes you forget they are just regular human beings because of all the incredible work they do. To watch their reactions and see their emotions on their faces was also heartbreaking. A tragic day indeed.

Nowadays people whip their phones out to start filming or taking selfies. I get really upset when that happens. It's just so disrespectful. It's a different story if you can help in any way.

Huge shoutout to the producers for keeping this moment as respectful for the victim’s family as possible. Not only did they not show the victim’s body at all, but they even left out the music to honor that moment of silence. Also huge shoutout to the lifeguards for spending all that time looking for the victim when it could’ve been just a false alarm
Heartbreaking. I was a lifeguard for 10 years. My worst fear was losing track of someone in the water. Thankfully, I never had that happen. For people who can't swim, the ocean is not your friend. My sympathy to his family and friends; and also to the lifeguards there that day.
