  • I hope I’ve convinced you to watch HBO’s “Chernobyl”, and if you’ve seen it already-I would love to discuss it with you in the comments below! Were you as horrified, glued to the screen, and emotionally drained as I was? Did you look into the events further? Would you actually visit the exclusion zone today? This brilliant mini-series is directed by Johan Renck, written by Craig Mazin, and starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson, and Paul Ritter, and I can’t wait for all of these people to win their well-deserved awards.

It`s great, but highly biased. The typical American "The Soviet State is the devil" thinking, while america itself has covered up a lot.
It would have been better if the ukraine had shot the series.

I was 16, living in the U.S. when this happened and didn't have any clue about how........real this event was. All I thought about was "Great, the Russians screwed up something and was hiding it..........typical". After watching this mini series, I was really taken aback by all that transpired. I went down the "RUclips Rabbit Hole" with whatever I could find. Everyone who was involved in this mini series really hit it out of the park. I couldn't agree with you more with all your comments.

There needs to be a memorial statue somewhere to the miners at Chernobyl and it needs to have an inscription that reads: "We're still wearing the fuckin' hats."

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I had the same fears you did when I heard this show was being made. But like you I was very... I don't feel like "pleasant" is a word that should be used in relation to this miniseries but that is the expression :p. But I was pleasantly surprised by the effort they went to in order to be respectful and authentic and to avoid telling a biased story.
You did an amazing job of explaining the show and why watching isnt just a good idea, but an important one. So much so that, with your permission, I would like to share this video with other reactors who have not viewed this miniseries yet as a reason for doing so. I was born 2 years after the disaster so I have no memories of it at all. After watching it, I think the most horrifying thing is not just the disaster itself, but that we still don't know how many people died as a result of it... the highest estimate is more than 93,000.
I also felt that the few moments of levity in the series were earned and didn't feel out of tone or place; it helps that some of the funnier characters like Glukhov, the leader of the coal miners are among the bravest as well.

I thought the series was incredible. I am in the UK and was a young mother and expecting my second child when Chernobyl happened and remember the anxiety over the weather and wind reports. I was anxious but then it was far worse for those in Ukraine and the countries that bordered it. My children were fine but it must have been a huge worry for your parents and others of that generation. None of us fully understood what was happening, we just knew, 'radiation', 'acid rain' and that it was really bad. This series educates us on how bad it was and just how bad it could have been. The story should be told of the misguided, the sacrificed and the brave and it's good to know that from your perspective, it has been told well.

Some of the scariest stuff i've seen, like ever. Not only in the way it portrays the disaster and the horrifying effects of radiation, but also how it was handled; ignorance and negligence are dangerous. How the people handling the situation, the government kept ignoring how messed up the situation was to the public and in the end the consequences were devastating. Lies and radiation were truly the "villains". It's been nearly three weeks and i still can't get this show out of my head.
The show is incredibly well crafted, nearly flawless; from the cinematography to the fantastic score, which complements the imagery in a sinister and perfect way. Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson are definitely gonna win some awards for this. Also i agree on how it was smart to not have the non russian actors speak with a russian accent, it's usually very distracting, but here, i didn't even noticed, and when the show is so well done, it doesn't matter.
I'm definitely checking out that book, sounds very interesting.
    Fantastic video, as always.

The two most interesting scenes for me where the one where they seek three volunteers to re-enter the plant and the one with the baboushka refusing to leave her home. Both contained attempts by the writer to show the bond between Russians, their land, and their history, and explain why people would be willing to sacrifice themselves & others for the greater good. “You will do it because it needs to be done”. A lot of history in that line. Perhaps Legasov should have suggested that be put on the money?
I’ve read that a similar series could be made in the future about Bhopal. It would make a good companion piece. Another dirty part of modern history that deserves a spotlight shining on it. And one with questions to be asked about aspects of capitalism.

@@ImpressionBlend You're welcome Mariana. Today I listened to one of Legasov's tape recordings here on youtube. Word for word how he described the whole thing from the beginning. Then heard a compilation of his statements and found out how knowledgable and elocuent he was. And last week I saw the famous "Chernobyl 3828" documentary here on youtube as well, which shines a light on the work that the 'biorobots' did on the roof to clear the debri. It is mindboggling really. Have also checked on information about nuclear reactors, interviews on Legasov's daughter and comparisons of real footage with the show amongst other things.

And Jesus, I completely agree with you on the accents. I actually read many comments of obviously clueless people complaining that the show lacked authenticity because... it didn't feel russ... I mean, foreign enough... because it didn't have those fake accents. ^^; Sigh.
If you can shoot a story in the original language, that's great, that's the best option (in Chernobyl's case, russian with ukrainian accent...?). But if you do it in english, just own it. The Brits who did Rome didn't have the actors play in english with an italian accent. XD Anyway, when friends complain that Chernobyl wasn't shot in russian, as if it was a deal breaker for a movie, my answer is... "Red October".

I loved this show so much. I never gave the accident in Chernobyl a second thought when I heard about it in the 80s, it was half a world away and I didn't even really understand what had happened outside of there being an accident at a nuclear facility. I wasn't directly affected by it, so I never thought about. Well, now I will never forget about this accident or the people whose lives were destroyed or otherwise affected by the disaster. The show did its job, it made me care, and it made me want to learn more of the real story. This is 'artistic liberties' done right. And the podcast that Craig Mazin did alongside the series is a must-listen as well, he is very forthcoming about the changes that he made from real people and real events, and why he felt those changes were necessary. Just so great.
And yes, I will be ordering Voices From Chernobyl. As hard to watch as this miniseries was, I feel it's important to know these stories.

I totally agree with absolutely everything you said about this brilliant miniseries. The Podcast is very useful to understand the sheer amount of effort in getting everything that appeared "on point" as a result Idid purchase "Chernobyl Prayer" and "Midnight in Chernobyl".
It's a very tough series to watch, Iknow that I cried a number of times, including at the end of episode five. I think that it's disgraceful that due to Soviet cover-up we will never precisely how many brave people made the ultimate sacrifice in saving millions of others. Or for that matter how many survived but are dealing with serious health problems as a result.
During Chernobyl I was studying at a University in South East England, of course the internet didn't exist, there were only USENET Newsgroups, so the only source of news was from the traditional media outlets. There was an advantage (or disadvantage maybe) in that people could ask the Physicists to find out how bad it could be. Even in UK things could have become very bad indeed, if the worse case scenario came to pass. So I remember checking wind directions and whether it was going to rain. Remarkably it didn't rain over most of the UK. However it did rain on some of highland areas of Wales and Scotland - are restrictions in some of these areas to this day.
However it all pales into insignificance compared to what you went through, I hope that you haven't got any health complications as a result. So it only remains for me to pass on the very best of wishes to you!

The core will remain hot for along time.. Now the radiation outside has already decayed away, this is why tourist are allowed even next to the Cemented building with no effect. Even the Equipment is down to 10- 50 rads, from 1000... Animals are back in the area, and they do study them to see if 3 to 10 rads causes any effect. = Same amount you get in a plane... People should check out some of the RUclips tours, of Chernobyl. If memory serves me correct the Radiation outside had a decay rate of 30 to 35 years, the core close to 20,000 yrs if that is true. Sense people are touching and walking around Chernobyl today, i have to believe the outside decay rate is true. The sacrifice the people made to contain it, was a very good one.

Do not let the failure of miserably designed Soviet RBMK reactor plants scare you away from nuclear power. Though the outstanding HBO series does a genius job of explaining the tech aspects of what happened in a way the layman
can understand, formulating a viable conclusion regarding nuclear power really requires a working understanding of nuclear reactors, plant operation, and logic.
The remaining operational RBMK plants have been modified to fix the problems, but please know that US and Western plants in general have used
for decades an extremely stable design. This includes nuke Naval vessels, pioneered by Hyman Rickover.
Volumes are required to cover this subject properly, but I'll end the torture by saying the HBO series is a masterpiece Docudrama in class of its own. Jared Harris! (Fringe [must see], Foundation)
....AND A MASSIVE YES TO NUCLEAR POWER!!

My only complaint is they made it seem the scientist didn't know the Soviet nuclear program was dangerous. They were very well aware of the problems.

I would say no fake accents is a decision I agree with but on the other side Narcos - another great series, would lose something if it wasn't in spanish . I think the important thing is that the vision makes sense and that the film makers know what they are doing. english, spanish, russian or otherwise

Oh wow you was there during it? You don't sound Russian by the way Emma from Spooky Astronauts reccomended me to you and this video yeah this was a great miniseries I found some scenes hard to watch just knowing it happened is the scary part my parents said that word never got out about it until the October that year. I may have to take you up on that book Voices of Chernobyl heard a lot about it.

Really good and thorough review of this awesome miniseries. It's a shame that nobody here, in Ukraine, have filmed something like this - I guess it's still traumatic to our collective consciousness. Well that's Hollywood for you - they can film tons of trash, but when they got serious, such masterpieces are born. Craig Mazin, with his obsession to find out truth about Chornobyl catastrophe, has created a spiritualistic seance under the guise of the mini-series. Watching it evoked memories and was frightening like revived corpse enchanted by necromancers from HBO/Sky. And the podcast is a must - it shows what deep research Mazin has conducted, explains why some events were changed and reveals deeper meaning of what is shown on the screen. The music is indeed haunting. Good thing that they didn't imitate accent, it would've been irritating and fake.

I find fake foreign accents irritating in general! I haven't been in the right frame of mind to watch a show like this yet, but I will definitely catch up on it soon. The people involved and the reviews for it make it a must see and I'm really happy to know it isn't exploitative like most films with this type of subject matter. Really insightful review :)

@@ImpressionBlend I've just seen that burial scene from the end of episode 3 and I have to take a break and watch the rest tomorrow as that entire episode was a very tough watch. Wow! Some of the imagery in this just hits so hard. I've been lucky to have watched some of the more obscure films Jessie Buckley has been in (I seriously recommend Wild Rose) and she is an outstanding actress in my opinion. Not surprising how good she is here.

Masterpiece series and absolutely stellar review of this miniseries. The score is also incredible. The best score I have heard since The Thin Red Line. Loosing the accents goes along with recent films like The Death Of Stalin and all the way back to the HBO movie Citizen X. It was a great choice. Finally, even though the American series The Americans did not cover Chernobyl..that series did cover the escalation of the levels of lying and cover up by top KGB officials. I feel The Americans is a great multilayered series which has an interesting perspective regarding the beginning of the decline of the Soviet Union under Gorbachev and rather corrupt KGB and Soviet officials trying to oust Gorbachev. A lot of it is embellished and fictional but the big picture appears to be correct. That series also presented the American intelligence apparatus in an unflattering light.

    "Respect to subject"
People drinking vodka EVERYWHERE during the prohibition even before the explosion (and no explanation why they given so much vodka afterwards). Some "small" assumptions with overall true approach sometimes makes even more damage than open lies. I don't know if they filled miniseries with this intentionally or just failed to understand Soviet people set of mind completely, but it definitely gives a lot of misconception which viewers will believe are true...

Unbelievable, I read your comment before the vid and have only just noticed her accent because of what you said. I always thought she had a muted American accent that I couldnt place exactly. But now that I know what to listen for, it's obvious. Guess I'm not that observant.
