I do agree on the lack of attention to the supporting act. It may be hopeful but I wouldn't mind some detailed deleted scenes on the blu-ray release.

the movie was about realizing we are all essentially alone on this journey through life. being alone in space trying to find our father and his reasons for pressing on to find the reason for existance is something we all have a deep calling for. as far as father and son relationships go in space, dr. evil and scott have that one nailed!

    -Relationship between Man and God
-How far are you willing to sacrifice your Earthly attachments in the pursuit of discovery or career?
    -Relationship between Man and Father
-Love and meaningful relationships are the essence of life, that even something as crazy as a venture into space near Neptune can’t be better than loving your family or wife.
-A deep study on human emotion and the suppression of those emotions.
-The use of silence and white noise to amplify emotion and feeling in a film.

That is the basic principle of Ad Astra, that space aficionados (and scientists) should contemplate the possibility that no alien intelligence exists or that we will never find it. On the one hand it is terrifying, but on the other it may tell us how unique humanity is. When faced with this possibility, Clifford MacBride (TL Jones) goes insane, unable to deal with the ramifications. The scene in which his pain and madness over this are fully revealed to his son is the most powerful in the whole film. Such news would make me totally insane as well.

I loved Solarus and Apocalypse Now but have ambivalent thoughts on Ad Astra.
To me it tells one very specific man's journey to Neptune to see his father. The main character was not an "every man." So, it may not have mass appeal.
Also the Antimatter blasts being sent to Earth seemed like it was tacked on to the plot, and the shootout with the moon buggies seemed of nearly irrelevant and only included to show a little bit of action.
The movie is about a lone man dealing with his loneliness, finding out that humans are alone in the universe.
    Not very inspiring.

My problem with this film is that it has the aesthetic of deep meaning but conveys little to no meaning in its actual story and the filmic realization. It serves as a blanket for the projections of the audiences, if they are willing to give it. I wasn't willing, I expect a movie to do more of the work itself. It should provoke an emotional response from me by functional storytelling instead of letting me do all the work and then taking the credit for it.

This fucking movie was amazing. It's not just about searching for his father. It shows you how crazy people can get when they're so far away from Earth. When you're alone in the universe far away at distant planets. This is a very real problem in real life, at least for the space station, cause we haven't gone much further, astronauts are trained to learn how to cope with the loneliness of being in space at space station for long periods. Humans need to see other faces. We are social creatures. And this movie does a good job to convey the vastness and nothingness of space and the universe. Albiet it's in a sci-fi way. With way more technology than we have now. But still a great movie 👌 I have always loved space and this movie like I said again does an amazing job of conveying the nothingness out there.

Impression Blend Saw it yesterday and YES loved it. Gravity meets Apocalypse Now. The symbolism of birth during the underwater scene, the letting go of his father, literally and mentally hit all the right notes for me. I did want a bit more dialogue from the scene with his father but that’s getting picky

90% of people in this movie show no emotion (or common sense). Also as you said this is an unhappy story and nobody wins in the end. But the special effects are very good.

I do like contemplative films of this nature, but when they keep asking the same questions and explore the same themes, it just loses the integrity it sets up and can veer towards hollow pretension. I don't generally watch Brad Pitt films for him, but the premise intrigued me, and thanks to your recommendation I'm breaking with my usual routine of Friday night flicks and going to watch this next Wednesday.

I think we've passed the time when we watched movies for the actors-it's all about the directors these days, and certain subgenres. However, there are a few actors out there who are likely to push me towards watching a film (though not 100%), and Brad Pitt is one of those few.

    • @Nightlightknight
      @Nightlightknight 4 года назад

Impression Blend I know what you mean. I’ve not missed a Egerton film yet and I’ve not watched Rocketman only because I figure the censors here will butcher it. I guess for me it’s premise first, acting talent and then reviews. I don’t really consider directors much as I don’t know that many of them. I just figure that if the blurb is creatively interesting and there are good actors, it’ll be a good film in almost anyone’s hands.

I've never thought i'd ever say this, but for the first time ever Brad Pitt can actually act.
It literaly took a divorce and a rehab but he's finally able to show emotion on that otherwise stonerface of his.
So Mr Pitt please do more of these projects in the future.

Hi Marianna.. Do you think the “action scenes” are a bit over the top and detracts from the tone of the film? There are some reviewers who felt that way even if they liked the film in general.
BTW, you look great😊, and love the NOS4A2 🧛‍♂️ plate behind you.

    • @lyunardo

I thought that the action scenes weren't really about what was happening in them, they were a commentary about human nature, and specifically about men. Just like every other scene in the movie.

I loved the acting, visuals, world building, and the clear destination of its plot.
Things I didn't like were the abundance of narration, and while the two brief action sequences are independently thrilling, they feel completely unnecessary to the plot. There is one extremely on the nose moment of dialog during the end that took me right out of the moment.

    • @ImpressionBlend

Yea, I can understand, narration is always a hit or miss thing. It didn't bother me here, but there are SO many films where I was annoyed by it.

Personally I wouldnt recommend, unless you ardently love slowburn movies & stories, & if you love drama it is probably for you...some things were not concluded unf.
It's a movie about humans, being humans.
      The scenery was wonderful though.
Her review is very positive, im happy she liked it & was her cup of tea.
But Im an avid sci-fi & drama fan, i like different genres intermixed, it was alright for what it was, just a very realistic story of how things would really be like in similar situations, if you are looking for anything beyond, this is not the kind of movie unf.
But you should see it if you have a good feeling about it :)

I have a good feeling that there's an amazing version of this movie that has an extra 30 minutes or so. Just based on how sequences are edited, and how some cast members feel underutilized, it makes me think that after Disney bought Fox they asked for the movie to be cut down. It's good that this version is still worth a lot of praise, but it definitely makes me wonder...

    • @ImpressionBlend
      @ImpressionBlend 4 года назад +1

You know, I was thinking that too. It just seemed strange to cast some of these people in these small roles, so I'm assuming there are scenes we didn't see. There is definitely stuff in the trailer that wasn't in the film, so I'm curious if there will be a director's cut on the bluray.
