I attended a week long conference in a genuine 5 star resort in Western Australia and we were required to vacate the restaurant no later than 0745 every morning to make way for Chinese tourist buses. The staff were very strict to the point we all felt quite slighted, until the day the coach arrived early, The tourists stampeded out of the bus, slammed through the doors , clambering over tables and overturning chairs in order to get to the buffet tables. They used their hands to pile up multiple plates while stuffing their mouths at the same time. Turns out, the resort had an agreement with the Chinese travel agency that there was to be no contact with other resort guests "to protect the good name of China". I later found out that because their behaviour was equally appalling when they went shopping they did their shopping outside normal trading hours in designated Chinese staffed shops to avoid any contact with the locals.
The guys make a few good points. Re: Hotels, In the majority of cities a westerner is not allowed to stay in any hotel less than three stars. 2nd: You must have your pass port. 3rd when booking hotels, bullet trains etc, or even shopping, if you can avoid it, don't you do it. They see a westerner, your a target. To do all these things I send in my wife. Born in Shanghai, grew up in Beijing locals can't tell she is an OZ citizen. She will want to SEE the hotel room first. She will buy train tickets from an local agent not the station. To do shopping I walk around alone, check out what I want & leave. Later send the wife to buy. She gets the local Chinese prices not the bumped up price for westerners. When traveling around China, local restaurants, taxis, shops think she is a hired travel agent, interpreter (not wife) and whisper in Mandarin to her "Get the westerner to buy the expensive dishes, we will give you a commission." My wife refuses to tell any one we are man & wife either when not absolutely necessary. She says it's to stop the following barrage of questions, where did you met, where do you live, have any kids? You must be very rich etc. etc.

I lived in mainland China for 6 years, traveled by motorbike extensively on my own. I can personally confirm that everything you have said is true. I would move back to China in a heartbeat given the chance. It was a great experience and met a lot of very nice people. It's not all bad, just different. Hope you keep sharing your videos.
You know that moment when you are in a lobby of one of the nicer Chinese hotels, marble floors, high ceilings all properly civilized and then some local guy deposits a lake of spit on the floor and happily walks on like nothing happened. Yeah.
aleksander suur Things have changed in Beijing since they held the Olympics. Their Government is even chastising any of their people who travel outside the country for doing what use to be culturally acceptable in China, such as spitting anywhere, urinating behind bushes, and any other gross conduct. One thing that has not changed is mother's with their very young children, wearing pants with no bottoms at the back, so they can squat whenever they need to relieve themselves. The Government in 2015, were actually punishment their people, on return to the country, if they were reported for any transgression, while abroad. Travel for Chinese outside if businessmen, is relative new. Public toilets, at least in Beijing, have been going through a revolutionary change and are award stars, indicting the level of cleanliness and if you can expect to find toilet paper being supplied, or if there are Western style toilets available. People just remember eastern culture has been use to squatty toilets since inception, Western style is considered unclean. You have to remember that great areas of China does not have Western sewage systems or treated water. So keep to drinking bottled water only, even in five star hotels.
I live in China and I am puzzled when westerners complain about spitting. To me far worse is the 10 seconds prior when it starts with a cough, then clearing the lungs, then the rasping, etc. The actual spit is the last step of this awful routine. Why? Because it’s part of the Chinese philosophy that the “bad” fluids have to be expelled and make a big fuss about it. In my office sneezes represent competition in loudness. Colds are also terrible because people generally do not blow their noses, so they snort it back like wild horses. People are people, but some of these cultural differences are disconcerting. BUT the new generations especially in the cities never “spit” or whatever. For a few millions of people, it will need longer. BTW, there’s little difference between men and women’s behaviour, which is even more shocking...
I've stayed in my fair share of Chinese hotels and can relate to everything your are saying......especially the behaviour at the buffet! It really does have to be seen to be believed. They will physically push you out of the way and take EVERYTHING! However.......I will relay this quite amusing story about 1 particular buffet lunch in a hotel where I used to go..... The hotel management had applied a ruling regarding a salad bar stating that you were only allowed to go ONCE up the the bar and only allowed to take the rather small 20cm (8") bowl that they provided. Not to be outdone, the local visitors first went to the fruit bowl and loaded up with small cut pieces of melon, but NOT to eat........read on:- Then they went to the salad bowl and using the bowl of mayonnaise as a kind of mortar proceeded to 'build' a wall using the melon pieces held together with the mayonnaise around the outside of their bowls until it was about 10 or 12cm high.......NO JOKE. Now armed with their 'tall' bowl they filled it with sweetcorn/lettuce/shrimps etc! One guy did this for each of his family, and before too long everybody else was copying! Final point.....ALWAYS take your own 3-in-1 coffee sachets with you. There is rarely any coffee in Chinese hotels!
I was in Beijing a month ago. Walked in the touristy “old part of town.” Both foreign and Chinese tourists come here. Streets were full of shops and people. All of a sudden I see a guy with 1 year old child squat down and hold his squatting child (or maybe grand child) while the child takes a poo, right there in the street!!! I was disturbed. It ruined my day I was so upset. And then the other tourist stepped right into the shit.

If I recall correctly, the car backed up and ran it over more times because in many Asian countries the law says the driver has to pay the medical bills of a person who was injured for the entire life. That causes people to make sure the injured are dead instead.
It's something that I don't like even though I like chinese culture etc i even studied it at uni but am neutral in the sense that i will easily talk about the bad stuff as well as the good I think it's something to do with 1) there aren't many public toilets in china or they're hard to find and 2) they find it more convenient to just let a kid do that
That thing you mentioned around 12:30 about people being like animals. I work at a pretty big company in the US where we had people from China come over for training. We were all waiting in line to get lunch as usual then these people just charged in front of the line to grab food. We couldn't believe this was happening in the company. I dismissed it as just a cultural difference, but that's pretty rude.
I was in Taiwan and these Chinese tourists wanted to cut the line to buy train tickets. The next train was 45 min so it was only just to get ahead. For no reason.
It's funny how the discussion talks about observing Chinese tourists like they are wild animals. I have also "observed" this behavior in Taiwan were I was on the east coast at a train station. A lady cut in the line and the next train was in 45 min. Maybe six people in the station total. She wanted to get in front of me out of principal.

As a 74 year old English granny, I won’t be travelling to China any time soon, but thanks for the info about hotels! I don’t fancy the possibility of having to camp by a roadside, or fight over the shrimps and bananas at breakfast. As for the shitty towels in the rooms - not exactly a holiday made in heaven.

I used to work as a waiter in a hotel in new zealand and my manager hated the mainland chinese customers on the buffet service with a passion. They always left such a disgusting mess with half plates uneaten. I just thought it was a cultural thing leaving your plate empty, means not enough, but I think it is some view of not having manners and not being taught as a kid, your eyes are bigger than your stomach.

Yes, as a Chinese I can confirm that. They do that shit all the time and drives the buffet price up. Many Americans waste a lot in thier plate too if you have worked in a buffet in US. I always eat only a little in a Buffet in China as trying to set an example of conserving and I love BBQ buffet. Thinking back, because of this moral principle I strongly carried around, I have eaten too little over the years, lol... Don't defend them if you are Chinese, you are paying more because of the wastes.
I really enjoyed watching your videos. I grew up in Vietnam (which is a China's slightly more carefree and less overcrowded replica) so I can relate a lot. What I learnt is always keeping your expectation of the hotels down and rush for the streets as soon as possible :)

Usually you can pull bollards out and it's more of an explorer's thing than anything to do with Chinese culture, I know plenty of Europeans who would do the same.
These two guys adopted to CHinese way of doing things, in a bad way, for example the way c-milk ride through a intersection in another of his videos surprised me, just like an average electric-bike rider here, who never wait behind the white line for the green, he just cut to the left very early to the wrong side of road, than went right through the intersection when he saw no traffic. It also seems they are very interested in prostitutes, the cheapest type...... it prove the old Chinese saying"学坏容易学好难", they should know there is another saying"水往低处流，人往高处走(water flows downward, people should go upward“。
Hey guys, my wife and travelled to China last September, staying at Beijing, Xian, Hong Kong and Shanghai, the worst hotel we stopped in was a boutique hotel in HK and never experienced anything like what you are describing. We found the people most helpful, we never had prostitute calling cards, in our rooms, breakfast, varied you are correct about the noodles etc, but there was always a variation of eggs, and sausages, some chicken, pork or beef, cereal was limited, toast, fresh fruit, we were paying about £10 for breakfast which was always an additional cost. I organised the whole trip and was most satisfied with the results, the biggest problem with visiting China is the language and signs. It is necessary to do your homework regarding travelling around, the metro is far the best way to travel the cities are huge with traffic to match. Travelling around the backstreets to avoid the traffic congestion so you are bound to see an other side of China, as you would in any city's back streets. I think your assessment is a little unfair, yes we were at the tourist areas but walked quite a lot and was not disappointed, people should not be put off by these two guys idea, we paid on average £60 to £100 per night for the hotels we selected and happy with results. My only advice if you are wanting to travel to China, use an agent, they provide a guide for your whole experience, unless like us you prefer an adventure. Good luck.
I love your videos. The banter is just awesome, I have been to China a few times but only scratched the surface. It's great hearing about real life there from two 'locals' who tell it how it is.
It is actually illegal for hotels to turn away foreigners anywhere in China. The reason you get turned away is the receptionist is lazy, afraid, or clueless on how to register a "foreign guest" and would rather just say no. I know of an American lady who will take over their computer and show them how to do it. . or have them call the police so she can tell them Chinese law they are ignorant of.
I only experienced one hotel that did not have a permit to house foreigners. It was a Jin Jiang hotel which I stayed in a lot but this one said now. I did see a lot of adds that said Mainland Chinese Only.
Funny story about the buffets in both China and Thailand. I wonder, don't they have small family owned guest houses like in Japan (ryokan)? Anyway, when I was in Japan, a friend of mine got married to a Japanese man and she invited me for the wedding. The first cultural shock for me was that she was an American and traditionally people at the wedding talk about your achievements in life: your degrees, your career and so forth (that would be considered rude in most European countries and definitely a show off). The next cultural shock was when I approached the buffet with my chopsticks to get some sushi, suddenly, a small crowd of skilled Japanese relatives and friends surrounded me and in no time there was only one piece of sushi left. I didn't know how to use chopsticks at the time so I spent a few minutes chasing after a piece of sushi while in the meantime, the small crowd filled their plates in a matter of seconds and disappeared again. The only reason why they didn't take the last piece is because I was chasing it. Japanese people are in general very sharing and very thoughtful so I guess there was something strange about that particular crowd of people. BTW, I also had to pay to attend the wedding, at that time the common "fee" was about 50,000 yen (about 500 USD in 1998) for both my partner and I but I was very happy because my friend was very kind and I really wanted to help her out. We had good and well paid jobs at the time so money was not an issue. A suggestion, if you think Chinese hotels are dirty you should try some Indian ones. I had my worse experience in Kathmandu (before the earthquake in 2015) but also nightmarish experiences in Nepalganj (border between Nepal and Northern India) and Rishikesh but as a woman travelling alone I had to give priority to safety and I must admit that despite the low level of higiyene, the people treated me with respect and never harassed me.India, especially remote areas, is considered very dangerous for solo women. In fact, I often found myself to be the only female guest in the entire hotel where even the staff was composed by men only. You also hardly see any woman on their own in India as if they were living locked up in their houses. The situation is obviously completely different in big cities such as New Delhi and the new generation of middle class people is completely open minded compared to their parents. I know China is very safe for women but you guys don't know how lucky you are to be able to travel wherever you want without the fear of being sexually assaulted only because female.
I've been to China only once, Sichuan, and all I can say is these guys are telling the truth. I stayed in a 5 star hotel in Chengdu and it was pretty good, minus the breakfast buffet. All other hotels were pretty crazy, half the wall outlets not working, a sink that drained onto the bathroom floor, you name it. That said, I had a wonderful time in China. The best place I stayed was at a traditional Tibetan house in the deep countryside. Our host was great, made awesome food, and the setting was idyllic - a mountain village alongside a roaring river at 3000 meters.
Totally recognise the food scramble phenomenon. Stayed in a town in Guangxi Province 2 years ago. The buffet breakfast disappeared as fast as the staff replenished it. I was ignorant of this practice but my Chinese wife wasn't surpised. I was shocked to see one old lady take a plate of 12 to 15 boiled eggs to her table and promptly fill her hand bag. For their lunch my wife explained. In Shenzhen we stayed at the Hengfeng Hotel in Bao'an. Would recommend it to anyone, including C-milk's parents 😁. The breakfast buffet was really good with 'western' food that was pretty close to a Full English. Eggs etc were freshly cooked to order. Another matter of fact and enlightening video guys 👍🏼
The hospitality management industry is still challenged here. Its hard to find well trained service people. However if you choose wisely, you'll be pleasantly surprised that yes you can get exceptional service, quality and good value. . Research the property before booking. Check sites like trip advisor to see other traveller's comments. Select name brand hotels such as Marriott, Hilton, Kempinski, or Swisshotel. Stay on the club floors. Beware of bargains. You get what you pay for. Lastly, never let a Chinese person book your hotel.
I have traveled to China every year since 2009, and traveled extensively inside China. Have stayed in 2 and 5 star hotels. Five star hotels usually cost about $80-100 dollars in China, depending on the city it is located (hotels in Beijing cost more). 2-star hotels are not bad at all, normally they are clear enough, but they are small and do not fit a family of four.

I have found the Marriott Chain there to be exceptional - better than most in the states. A Courtyard Marriott in Shanghai can be had for less than $100 per night and is often better than JW Marriotts in the states.

0:30 in Australia it's depends on the hotel. Some are per person. Some are per room however government regulations make it so you can't just cram 100 people in a small room
The three star hotels you get the cards. The five star hotels you get a call before bedtime... " Do you need any help? ". The first time that happened to me I responded " Help with what, what do you mean? " and it became obvious that she didn't speak English, only that phrase. My Chinese wife explained to me that if I answer yes, that the gal will come up to my room for room service.

You guys driving around on those bikes and exploring the country makes me wish I had my Kawasaki KLR 250 dual sport bike again. I used to explore all the woods roads and trails around home with that bike when I was younger. So enjoyable and someday I will get back into biking again.
My wife and I took a one-week all inclusive tour with InterTrips and it was an overall good experience. They put us in nice hotels and the buffet breakfasts were good. The tour was $599 per person. You could probably do a video on those new popular inexpensive China tours.
Chinese hotels are just horror stories waiting to happen. I stayed in my hotel room when i was sick one day. The maid who cleans the room came and i let her in, as i had no plans of going out when sick. She started by dipping the mop into the toilet bowl to wet it and proceeded to mop the floor with it. I was shocked and disgusted. I asked her if she would clean her own home this way,and she said no, stating that her supervisors had instructed her to clean the rooms this way. They have no care for health violations and many aren't well educated, more to that later. I told her to stop and said she doesn't need to clean the room. I spoke to front desk and told them this is how diseases start, by smearing water that comes from the toilet bowl. They called in a "supervisor" who apologized and excused the lady's behavior because she was "new" to the job. I said fine, but i need someone now to disinfect the floor now with disinfectant, specifying the word disinfectant. They said no problem. I go up to my room, 10 minutes later, the supervisor and another maid shows up with a bucket of diluted red vinegar (yes, vinegar... the thing people dip dumplings in), saying that red vinegar will kill germs. 🤯 i asked if they have any stronger disinfectant and they said dont worry red vinegar is very strong. With such low education on health and germs, it's no wonder why there are so many diseases in China.
You forgot to talk about why most of the hotels have a HUGE window looking directly from the sleeping area to the bathroom or shower. I still can't figure that one out. I have some theories but don't know for sure. Do you guys know?
Some fancy hotelf don't even have walls. And I don't tell about Chinese hotels, European ones. It just depend where You stay. The fancier and more modern hotel the higher chance there will be nothing between room, bathroom and kitchen(if there is) And in China I think there is also cultural part. In Europe privacy for normal folks was not rly a thing, for wealthy also not so much. But those wealthy at some point in Europe get very private and the poor ones wanted to imitate wealthy. Thus born of super private culture in Europe(in like last 50-200years for non wealthy). In China it never rly happened to such extend. So being in bathroom is not something rly private it's just thing You do(use).
Back in the day, the hotel staff / pimps would showcase prostitutes through that glass barrier to the guest, likely in a bathrobe smoking a cigarette (think movie "Taken"). According to a co-worker.

Google is blocked largely for trade protection, not because of the content. RUclips, Twitter and Facebook are blocked because they were being used to organise civil unrest. Porn is blocked because it is porn. A few American newspapers were blocked for writing anti-Chinese stories, but most American media can be viewed.
The EU and especially Germany also have those insane "hate speech" laws that stifle freedom of speech and they have been going after internet sites who do not immediately delete them. Political correctness gone mad.
I had a very different experience. I met some people on a boat and when we landed I had no place to stay. I was invited to stay with them, but I saw that my host was stressed. The management made an issue of it, so I paid. It was not a problem, but I think some hotels do charge per bed used in the room.
Yes I can relate, I have learned the hard way if at all possible you do not want to stay in a hotel in a socialist's country! The best alternative is to rent a private residence or go B&B if you can network with locals. Even international brands have learned to steer clear from places like this since they are only able enter the market as partnerships. In the end the hosting partner will bail out when they feel they have made off with all they need to make their own knock off brand. Its not just hotels if you have any intellectual property worth protecting by all means stay away from markets that do not honor International law, patents or trademarks! It's like a rough neighborhood anywhere if you have anything of value big or small in clear sight the vultures will spot you. Guys I love your honest presentations but be careful in the jungle I worry your popularity may alert the officials.
I have really enjoyed your videos. I was in Zhuhai China in 2011 to meet a lady. It didn't work out but I met another lady and we ended up getting married. Anyway, the hotel i stayed at was the Catic hotel in Zhuhai. A 4 star hotel. There was no free breakfast. But the food was great. The room was great. The service was great. Price was around $55 to $60 USD a night. It was a very enjoyable experience for me! I have learned a lot about the ways of China and the people from your videos. Keep up the good work you two!
Look, I stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Xi'an with my parents and it was literally one of THE BEST experiences I've ever had in any hotel. They upgraded our room for free, idk why. They had all our bags and anything we requested for the room already in our room by the time we got back if we had to leave to eat or something. The breakfast buffet was literally the best breakfast buffet ive ever had at any hotel and Ive been to hotels all over the world, Germany, London, Paris, back in the States... nothing compared to the assortment and quality of the food they had. It was literally amazing. Beauutiful hotel. And even the Courtyard Marriot we stayed in in Beijing and Shanghai were amazing. And if you know your Marriots, Courtyards are NOT that great but the ones we stayed at were sooo much nicer than the Courtayds back in the States, that's for sure. Courtyards are not 5 star hotels but we still got a really good western breakfast buffet...they even made smoothies! I've stayed at so many Courtyards and I've never had one that offered fruit smoothies in the morning. Also free fruit and water in our rooms everyday?? Normally have to pay for those stupid water bottles but in China they were free. So if you ask me, I have 0 complaints about hotels in China.

This is true. in the states, its all about effing money. for the same price you get soo much more in china. stayed in four season chicago for arm and leg, half that price in shanghai and 1000x better. regarding water, trump hotel has $60 bottle of water. it absolutely tastes .... like water.
@12:30 I had the same thing happen to me when I was on an all-day reef cruise in Australia that had a buffet on board. Around 70% or so of the passengers were tourists from China, and some (not all) went to the habit of shovelling as much as they could onto plates for their table and only eating half of it. By the time we got to the front of the line many of the dishes were gone. This seems to be the reason why so many buffets here nowadays have extra fees if you waste or leave food uneaten.
These funny ppl only knows the "continental breakfast", which can is something my wife always called poor man's breakfast. Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, blah blah have much better breakfast options.
A hotel by the beach saying "The beach is closed" reminds me of a time I went to the grocery store to get some chocolate chip muffins for a work gathering and was told by the bakery that they didn't have any because "chocolate was out of season." I was like WTF?!!? When does chocolate EVER go out of season!?!?
I used to live in hotels a lot. They usually didn't provide waffles in their breakfast buffet. It was usually cereal, toast, yoghurt, sausages, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs and bacon.

Aossic Freud As a motorcycle rider myself I would rather sweat than bleed. They wear protective gear even when it is hot. If by chance they dumped their bikes on a dirt road or even on asphalt the jackets will help keep their body protected. Jean pants offer little protection but is better than wearing shorts . Otherwise you would need many skin grafts to correct the injuries to your skin.

Since my return from a short visit to China last year (Oct 2019) I find your videos very insightful We are neighbors of a Chinese women who married a Professor (20 years ) older who helped us with our Visas and some dos & don’ts while visiting. The young lady who was my hostess, had stayed with us in Northern CA for about 3 weeks. I got the opportunity to go see China 2019 Music in Shanghai. Then stay with her in the mountains. Dongcang is the actual Village. Needless to say I was the first Foreigner to be seen by anyone in her village, I was asked to speak to two high school classes & a fifth grade class.I think if I saw your videos before I left it would have changed my experience. The Main issue was not helping anybody! My friend repeatedly asked me what I was doing & stop helping, which of course I didn’t one was helping Grandma getting on & off the bus, one elder who clearly had had a stroke couldn’t fit his bags at security check in and the last one a tuk tuk drops 6 or 7 cement bricks on a blind corner just around lunch time - I also used to ride bikes - so I jumped into street knowing that Mom & her two kids , or students coming home for lunch would that a spill - but with all its ups & downs and what I know now I would go again. To top it off I stared a company before I left dealing in the Stone Culture Art.
Why TF you guys act like the place you live is sparkling clean at every corner and you've never seen trashy spot at someplace somewhere before? China is a vast country with the good and the bad for sure, like everywhere else. These are two blue collar guys stay in a tier 4、tier 5 city. What you hear and what you see here are true, but using the story to generalize China as a whole you'd miss a lot here.
I'm staying at the four points sharaton in south shenzhen. I asked the conceirge to bring me a traditional breakfast, scrambled eggs, bacon and fried potatoes this morning at 9 am. Sure enough, food was delivered to my door on time. These guys are good...
You guys should check out the hotels in Taiwan. Of course, some of the cheaper ones are run down, but the nice ones are REALLY nice. Very clean, great service, wonderful food.

Winston you know the Russian Expo building in Beijing right? There is a side road to it that takes you down to a hotel which I have spent time at the last two years I have been to China. Granted it's like a 3 start here in Canada they have better treatment, so when we were traveling around we were able to leave our suitcases there and come back and book the same room we had when we left. Breakfast is pretty good though its extra. They have eggs, sausage, Chinese stuff, danish, bread/toast, fruit, orange juice, etc. And it's open at 7am and closes at 10am but its not super busy.
I recently stayed in two Hilton owned hotels in Shanghai and I had a much better experience than you described. I'm not saying that what you experienced isn't true but that there might actually be decent hotels out there. My Chinese girlfriend is the one who booked them and they were both really impressive in terms of cleanliness and the service was decent. One was in these hills close to a Chinese Amusement Park and the other was across from the Pearl Tower.
Umm most buffet i have seen in hotels all around the world including in america have sections of different national cuisines including chinese, japanese, european nations, an Indian section and so on. So yeah cool story bro, most hotels cater to their guests, that is, providing options for meals. It's very rare not to see some kind of noodle dish, or stir fry, or a curry at a western hotel buffet. Of course no breakfast, but thats because Asians have no fucking clue how to do breakfast. I say Asians because this is true for all Asian countries not china.
I haven't been turned away from a hotel in China (Chongching) because I booked through an online travel website. What they did was: they said that there were no seats on the bus to go back to the airport when there clearly were some left.

I've stayed at the Sheraton on the beach mentioned in the video for a friends wedding. It is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at by miles. The views from the amazing wave shaped building is spectacular and the food is perfect western standard. It must have cost a ton!
RE: Prostitution I once hosted Chinese clients when I worked in Wales. We booked them the best hotel here and paid for all their stay here but not one thing. They seemed to expect us to provide women for them? I don't know if that is normal for business arrangements but we clearly took offence to this.

I just started watching your channel and I must say your point of view is near to my heart. It made me realize how S Korea has taken some of the best characteristics of Asia and improved on them!
I attended a week long conference in a genuine 5 star resort in Western Australia and we were required to vacate the restaurant no later than 0745 every morning to make way for Chinese tourist buses. The staff were very strict to the point we all felt quite slighted, until the day the coach arrived early, The tourists stampeded out of the bus, slammed through the doors , clambering over tables and overturning chairs in order to get to the buffet tables. They used their hands to pile up multiple plates while stuffing their mouths at the same time. Turns out, the resort had an agreement with the Chinese travel agency that there was to be no contact with other resort guests "to protect the good name of China". I later found out that because their behaviour was equally appalling when they went shopping they did their shopping outside normal trading hours in designated Chinese staffed shops to avoid any contact with the locals.
Wow! That’s an amazing story. I do find the Chinese incredibly rude, but I think some Chinese find their own country people pretty vulgar.
The guys make a few good points. Re: Hotels, In the majority of cities a westerner is not allowed to stay in any hotel less than three stars. 2nd: You must have your pass port. 3rd when booking hotels, bullet trains etc, or even shopping, if you can avoid it, don't you do it. They see a westerner, your a target. To do all these things I send in my wife. Born in Shanghai, grew up in Beijing locals can't tell she is an OZ citizen. She will want to SEE the hotel room first. She will buy train tickets from an local agent not the station. To do shopping I walk around alone, check out what I want & leave. Later send the wife to buy. She gets the local Chinese prices not the bumped up price for westerners. When traveling around China, local restaurants, taxis, shops think she is a hired travel agent, interpreter (not wife) and whisper in Mandarin to her "Get the westerner to buy the expensive dishes, we will give you a commission." My wife refuses to tell any one we are man & wife either when not absolutely necessary. She says it's to stop the following barrage of questions, where did you met, where do you live, have any kids? You must be very rich etc. etc.

You know that moment when you are in a lobby of one of the nicer Chinese hotels, marble floors, high ceilings all properly civilized and then some local guy deposits a lake of spit on the floor and happily walks on like nothing happened. Yeah.

Their Government is even chastising any of their people who travel outside the country for doing what use to be culturally acceptable in China, such as spitting anywhere, urinating behind bushes, and any other gross conduct. One thing that has not changed is mother's with their very young children, wearing pants with no bottoms at the back, so they can squat whenever they need to relieve themselves.
The Government in 2015, were actually punishment their people, on return to the country, if they were reported for any transgression, while abroad. Travel for Chinese outside if businessmen, is relative new. Public toilets, at least in Beijing, have been going through a revolutionary change and are award stars, indicting the level of cleanliness and if you can expect to find toilet paper being supplied, or if there are Western style toilets available. People just remember eastern culture has been use to squatty toilets since inception, Western style is considered unclean. You have to remember that great areas of China does not have Western sewage systems or treated water. So keep to drinking bottled water only, even in five star hotels.

I live in China and I am puzzled when westerners complain about spitting. To me far worse is the 10 seconds prior when it starts with a cough, then clearing the lungs, then the rasping, etc. The actual spit is the last step of this awful routine. Why? Because it’s part of the Chinese philosophy that the “bad” fluids have to be expelled and make a big fuss about it. In my office sneezes represent competition in loudness. Colds are also terrible because people generally do not blow their noses, so they snort it back like wild horses. People are people, but some of these cultural differences are disconcerting. BUT the new generations especially in the cities never “spit” or whatever. For a few millions of people, it will need longer. BTW, there’s little difference between men and women’s behaviour, which is even more shocking...
I've stayed in my fair share of Chinese hotels and can relate to everything your are saying......especially the behaviour at the buffet! It really does have to be seen to be believed. They will physically push you out of the way and take EVERYTHING!
However.......I will relay this quite amusing story about 1 particular buffet lunch in a hotel where I used to go.....
The hotel management had applied a ruling regarding a salad bar stating that you were only allowed to go ONCE up the the bar and only allowed to take the rather small 20cm (8") bowl that they provided.
Not to be outdone, the local visitors first went to the fruit bowl and loaded up with small cut pieces of melon, but NOT to eat........read on:-
Then they went to the salad bowl and using the bowl of mayonnaise as a kind of mortar proceeded to 'build' a wall using the melon pieces held together with the mayonnaise around the outside of their bowls until it was about 10 or 12cm high.......NO JOKE.
Now armed with their 'tall' bowl they filled it with sweetcorn/lettuce/shrimps etc!
One guy did this for each of his family, and before too long everybody else was copying!
Final point.....ALWAYS take your own 3-in-1 coffee sachets with you. There is rarely any coffee in Chinese hotels!

I was in Beijing a month ago. Walked in the touristy “old part of town.” Both foreign and Chinese tourists come here. Streets were full of shops and people. All of a sudden I see a guy with 1 year old child squat down and hold his squatting child (or maybe grand child) while the child takes a poo, right there in the street!!! I was disturbed. It ruined my day I was so upset. And then the other tourist stepped right into the shit.

If I recall correctly, the car backed up and ran it over more times because in many Asian countries the law says the driver has to pay the medical bills of a person who was injured for the entire life. That causes people to make sure the injured are dead instead.

That thing you mentioned around 12:30 about people being like animals. I work at a pretty big company in the US where we had people from China come over for training. We were all waiting in line to get lunch as usual then these people just charged in front of the line to grab food. We couldn't believe this was happening in the company. I dismissed it as just a cultural difference, but that's pretty rude.

A lady cut in the line and the next train was in 45 min. Maybe six people in the station total. She wanted to get in front of me out of principal.

I used to work as a waiter in a hotel in new zealand and my manager hated the mainland chinese customers on the buffet service with a passion. They always left such a disgusting mess with half plates uneaten. I just thought it was a cultural thing leaving your plate empty, means not enough, but I think it is some view of not having manners and not being taught as a kid, your eyes are bigger than your stomach.

Yes, as a Chinese I can confirm that. They do that shit all the time and drives the buffet price up. Many Americans waste a lot in thier plate too if you have worked in a buffet in US. I always eat only a little in a Buffet in China as trying to set an example of conserving and I love BBQ buffet. Thinking back, because of this moral principle I strongly carried around, I have eaten too little over the years, lol... Don't defend them if you are Chinese, you are paying more because of the wastes.

These two guys adopted to CHinese way of doing things, in a bad way, for example the way c-milk ride through a intersection in another of his videos surprised me, just like an average electric-bike rider here, who never wait behind the white line for the green, he just cut to the left very early to the wrong side of road, than went right through the intersection when he saw no traffic. It also seems they are very interested in prostitutes, the cheapest type...... it prove the old Chinese saying"学坏容易学好难", they should know there is another saying"水往低处流，人往高处走(water flows downward, people should go upward“。
Hey guys, my wife and travelled to China last September, staying at Beijing, Xian, Hong Kong and Shanghai, the worst hotel we stopped in was a boutique hotel in HK and never experienced anything like what you are describing. We found the people most helpful, we never had prostitute calling cards, in our rooms, breakfast, varied you are correct about the noodles etc, but there was always a variation of eggs, and sausages, some chicken, pork or beef, cereal was limited, toast, fresh fruit, we were paying about £10 for breakfast which was always an additional cost. I organised the whole trip and was most satisfied with the results, the biggest problem with visiting China is the language and signs. It is necessary to do your homework regarding travelling around, the metro is far the best way to travel the cities are huge with traffic to match. Travelling around the backstreets to avoid the traffic congestion so you are bound to see an other side of China, as you would in any city's back streets.
I think your assessment is a little unfair, yes we were at the tourist areas but walked quite a lot and was not disappointed, people should not be put off by these two guys idea, we paid on average £60 to £100 per night for the hotels we selected and happy with results.
My only advice if you are wanting to travel to China, use an agent, they provide a guide for your whole experience, unless like us you prefer an adventure.

It is actually illegal for hotels to turn away foreigners anywhere in China. The reason you get turned away is the receptionist is lazy, afraid, or clueless on how to register a "foreign guest" and would rather just say no. I know of an American lady who will take over their computer and show them how to do it. . or have them call the police so she can tell them Chinese law they are ignorant of.

I only experienced one hotel that did not have a permit to house foreigners. It was a Jin Jiang hotel which I stayed in a lot but this one said now. I did see a lot of adds that said Mainland Chinese Only.
Someone Hotels, mainly cheaper ones, can't process foreign passports, i.e. submitting your scanned Visa to the local police office.

Funny story about the buffets in both China and Thailand. I wonder, don't they have small family owned guest houses like in Japan (ryokan)? Anyway, when I was in Japan, a friend of mine got married to a Japanese man and she invited me for the wedding. The first cultural shock for me was that she was an American and traditionally people at the wedding talk about your achievements in life: your degrees, your career and so forth (that would be considered rude in most European countries and definitely a show off). The next cultural shock was when I approached the buffet with my chopsticks to get some sushi, suddenly, a small crowd of skilled Japanese relatives and friends surrounded me and in no time there was only one piece of sushi left. I didn't know how to use chopsticks at the time so I spent a few minutes chasing after a piece of sushi while in the meantime, the small crowd filled their plates in a matter of seconds and disappeared again. The only reason why they didn't take the last piece is because I was chasing it. Japanese people are in general very sharing and very thoughtful so I guess there was something strange about that particular crowd of people. BTW, I also had to pay to attend the wedding, at that time the common "fee" was about 50,000 yen (about 500 USD in 1998) for both my partner and I but I was very happy because my friend was very kind and I really wanted to help her out. We had good and well paid jobs at the time so money was not an issue. A suggestion, if you think Chinese hotels are dirty you should try some Indian ones. I had my worse experience in Kathmandu (before the earthquake in 2015) but also nightmarish experiences in Nepalganj (border between Nepal and Northern India) and Rishikesh but as a woman travelling alone I had to give priority to safety and I must admit that despite the low level of higiyene, the people treated me with respect and never harassed me.India, especially remote areas, is considered very dangerous for solo women. In fact, I often found myself to be the only female guest in the entire hotel where even the staff was composed by men only. You also hardly see any woman on their own in India as if they were living locked up in their houses. The situation is obviously completely different in big cities such as New Delhi and the new generation of middle class people is completely open minded compared to their parents. I know China is very safe for women but you guys don't know how lucky you are to be able to travel wherever you want without the fear of being sexually assaulted only because female.

I have been to many western 5 star hotels in China and you get a western breakfast. We got waffles, and eggs, bacon, pastries, fruit..
I've been to China only once, Sichuan, and all I can say is these guys are telling the truth. I stayed in a 5 star hotel in Chengdu and it was pretty good, minus the breakfast buffet. All other hotels were pretty crazy, half the wall outlets not working, a sink that drained onto the bathroom floor, you name it. That said, I had a wonderful time in China. The best place I stayed was at a traditional Tibetan house in the deep countryside. Our host was great, made awesome food, and the setting was idyllic - a mountain village alongside a roaring river at 3000 meters.
Totally recognise the food scramble phenomenon. Stayed in a town in Guangxi Province 2 years ago. The buffet breakfast disappeared as fast as the staff replenished it. I was ignorant of this practice but my Chinese wife wasn't surpised. I was shocked to see one old lady take a plate of 12 to 15 boiled eggs to her table and promptly fill her hand bag. For their lunch my wife explained. In Shenzhen we stayed at the Hengfeng Hotel in Bao'an. Would recommend it to anyone, including C-milk's parents 😁. The breakfast buffet was really good with 'western' food that was pretty close to a Full English. Eggs etc were freshly cooked to order. Another matter of fact and enlightening video guys 👍🏼
The hospitality management industry is still challenged here. Its hard to find well trained service people. However if you choose wisely, you'll be pleasantly surprised that yes you can get exceptional service, quality and good value. . Research the property before booking. Check sites like trip advisor to see other traveller's comments. Select name brand hotels such as Marriott, Hilton, Kempinski, or Swisshotel. Stay on the club floors. Beware of bargains. You get what you pay for. Lastly, never let a Chinese person book your hotel.
I have traveled to China every year since 2009, and traveled extensively inside China. Have stayed in 2 and 5 star hotels. Five star hotels usually cost about $80-100 dollars in China, depending on the city it is located (hotels in Beijing cost more). 2-star hotels are not bad at all, normally they are clear enough, but they are small and do not fit a family of four.

I have found the Marriott Chain there to be exceptional - better than most in the states. A Courtyard Marriott in Shanghai can be had for less than $100 per night and is often better than JW Marriotts in the states.

The three star hotels you get the cards. The five star hotels you get a call before bedtime... " Do you need any help? ". The first time that happened to me I responded " Help with what, what do you mean? " and it became obvious that she didn't speak English, only that phrase. You guys driving around on those bikes and exploring the country makes me wish I had my Kawasaki KLR 250 dual sport bike again. I used to explore all the woods roads and trails around home with that bike when I was younger. So enjoyable and someday I will get back into biking again.

My wife and I took a one-week all inclusive tour with InterTrips and it was an overall good experience. They put us in nice hotels and the buffet breakfasts were good. The tour was $599 per person. You could probably do a video on those new popular inexpensive China tours.

Chinese hotels are just horror stories waiting to happen. I stayed in my hotel room when i was sick one day. The maid who cleans the room came and i let her in, as i had no plans of going out when sick. She started by dipping the mop into the toilet bowl to wet it and proceeded to mop the floor with it. I was shocked and disgusted. I asked her if she would clean her own home this way,and she said no, stating that her supervisors had instructed her to clean the rooms this way. They have no care for health violations and many aren't well educated, more to that later. I told her to stop and said she doesn't need to clean the room. I spoke to front desk and told them this is how diseases start, by smearing water that comes from the toilet bowl. They called in a "supervisor" who apologized and excused the lady's behavior because she was "new" to the job. I said fine, but i need someone now to disinfect the floor now with disinfectant, specifying the word disinfectant. They said no problem. I go up to my room, 10 minutes later, the supervisor and another maid shows up with a bucket of diluted red vinegar (yes, vinegar... the thing people dip dumplings in), saying that red vinegar will kill germs. 🤯 i asked if they have any stronger disinfectant and they said dont worry red vinegar is very strong. With such low education on health and germs, it's no wonder why there are so many diseases in China.
You forgot to talk about why most of the hotels have a HUGE window looking directly from the sleeping area to the bathroom or shower. I still can't figure that one out. I have some theories but don't know for sure. Do you guys know?
Some fancy hotelf don't even have walls. And I don't tell about Chinese hotels, European ones. It just depend where You stay. The fancier and more modern hotel the higher chance there will be nothing between room, bathroom and kitchen(if there is)
And in China I think there is also cultural part. In Europe privacy for normal folks was not rly a thing, for wealthy also not so much. But those wealthy at some point in Europe get very private and the poor ones wanted to imitate wealthy. Thus born of super private culture in Europe(in like last 50-200years for non wealthy). In China it never rly happened to such extend. So being in bathroom is not something rly private it's just thing You do(use).
Back in the day, the hotel staff / pimps would showcase prostitutes through that glass barrier to the guest, likely in a bathrobe smoking a cigarette (think movie "Taken"). According to a co-worker.

I was disgusted by the internet censorship in China. Granted the American media is garbage but why do the Chinese feel the need to censor things like Google and RUclips.

I had a very different experience. I met some people on a boat and when we landed I had no place to stay. I was invited to stay with them, but I saw that my host was stressed. The management made an issue of it, so I paid. It was not a problem, but I think some hotels do charge per bed used in the room.
Yes I can relate, I have learned the hard way if at all possible you do not want to stay in a hotel in a socialist's country! The best alternative is to rent a private residence or go B&B if you can network with locals. Even international brands have learned to steer clear from places like this since they are only able enter the market as partnerships. In the end the hosting partner will bail out when they feel they have made off with all they need to make their own knock off brand. Its not just hotels if you have any intellectual property worth protecting by all means stay away from markets that do not honor International law, patents or trademarks! It's like a rough neighborhood anywhere if you have anything of value big or small in clear sight the vultures will spot you. Guys I love your honest presentations but be careful in the jungle I worry your popularity may alert the officials.
I have really enjoyed your videos. I was in Zhuhai China in 2011 to meet a lady. It didn't work out but I met another lady and we ended up getting married. Anyway, the hotel i stayed at was the Catic hotel in Zhuhai. A 4 star hotel. There was no free breakfast. But the food was great. The room was great. The service was great. Price was around $55 to $60 USD a night. It was a very enjoyable experience for me! I have learned a lot about the ways of China and the people from your videos. Keep up the good work you two!

THE ROAD-TRIP-FILMING WAS A ABSOLUTELY GOOD IDEA, REALLY ENJOY IT GUYZ.
Look, I stayed at the Crowne Plaza in Xi'an with my parents and it was literally one of THE BEST experiences I've ever had in any hotel. They upgraded our room for free, idk why. They had all our bags and anything we requested for the room already in our room by the time we got back if we had to leave to eat or something. The breakfast buffet was literally the best breakfast buffet ive ever had at any hotel and Ive been to hotels all over the world, Germany, London, Paris, back in the States... nothing compared to the assortment and quality of the food they had. It was literally amazing. Beauutiful hotel. And even the Courtyard Marriot we stayed in in Beijing and Shanghai were amazing. And if you know your Marriots, Courtyards are NOT that great but the ones we stayed at were sooo much nicer than the Courtayds back in the States, that's for sure. Courtyards are not 5 star hotels but we still got a really good western breakfast buffet...they even made smoothies! I've stayed at so many Courtyards and I've never had one that offered fruit smoothies in the morning. Also free fruit and water in our rooms everyday?? Normally have to pay for those stupid water bottles but in China they were free. So if you ask me, I have 0 complaints about hotels in China.

@12:30 I had the same thing happen to me when I was on an all-day reef cruise in Australia that had a buffet on board. Around 70% or so of the passengers were tourists from China, and some (not all) went to the habit of shovelling as much as they could onto plates for their table and only eating half of it. By the time we got to the front of the line many of the dishes were gone. This seems to be the reason why so many buffets here nowadays have extra fees if you waste or leave food uneaten.
These funny ppl only knows the "continental breakfast", which can is something my wife always called poor man's breakfast. Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, blah blah have much better breakfast options.
A hotel by the beach saying "The beach is closed" reminds me of a time I went to the grocery store to get some chocolate chip muffins for a work gathering and was told by the bakery that they didn't have any because "chocolate was out of season." I was like WTF?!!? When does chocolate EVER go out of season!?!?

I used to live in hotels a lot. They usually didn't provide waffles in their breakfast buffet. It was usually cereal, toast, yoghurt, sausages, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs and bacon.

What you are describing in that train of excuses is core culture. I experienced the same thing at subway ticket windows in Shanghai and Beijing and in the dining halls at major universities in Shanghai.

Aossic Freud As a motorcycle rider myself I would rather sweat than bleed. They wear protective gear even when it is hot. If by chance they dumped their bikes on a dirt road or even on asphalt the jackets will help keep their body protected. Jean pants offer little protection but is better than wearing shorts . Otherwise you would need many skin grafts to correct the injuries to your skin.

Hey Winston - Have you ever been to Shangrao or Sanqing Mountain? Since my return from a short visit to China last year (Oct 2019) I find your videos very insightful We are neighbors of a Chinese women who married a Professor (20 years ) older who helped us with our Visas and some dos & don’ts while visiting. The young lady who was my hostess, had stayed with us in Northern CA for about 3 weeks. I got the opportunity to go see China 2019 Music in Shanghai. Then stay with her in the mountains. Dongcang is the actual Village. Needless to say I was the first Foreigner to be seen by anyone in her village, I was asked to speak to two high school classes & a fifth grade class.I think if I saw your videos before I left it would have changed my experience. The Main issue was not helping anybody! My friend repeatedly asked me what I was doing & stop helping, which of course I didn’t one was helping Grandma getting on & off the bus, one elder who clearly had had a stroke couldn’t fit his bags at security check in and the last one a tuk tuk drops 6 or 7 cement bricks on a blind corner just around lunch time - I also used to ride bikes - so I jumped into street knowing that Mom & her two kids , or students coming home for lunch would that a spill - but with all its ups & downs and what I know now I would go again. To top it off I stared a company before I left dealing in the Stone Culture Art.
The buffet thing is just disgraceful. Same for elevators/trains push for first entry. When will they start to become humans?

Why TF you guys act like the place you live is sparkling clean at every corner and you've never seen trashy spot at someplace somewhere before? China is a vast country with the good and the bad for sure, like everywhere else. These are two blue collar guys stay in a tier 4、tier 5 city. What you hear and what you see here are true, but using the story to generalize China as a whole you'd miss a lot here.

Winston you know the Russian Expo building in Beijing right? There is a side road to it that takes you down to a hotel which I have spent time at the last two years I have been to China. Granted it's like a 3 start here in Canada they have better treatment, so when we were traveling around we were able to leave our suitcases there and come back and book the same room we had when we left. Breakfast is pretty good though its extra. They have eggs, sausage, Chinese stuff, danish, bread/toast, fruit, orange juice, etc. And it's open at 7am and closes at 10am but its not super busy.

I recently stayed in two Hilton owned hotels in Shanghai and I had a much better experience than you described. I'm not saying that what you experienced isn't true but that there might actually be decent hotels out there. My Chinese girlfriend is the one who booked them and they were both really impressive in terms of cleanliness and the service was decent. One was in these hills close to a Chinese Amusement Park and the other was across from the Pearl Tower.

Umm most buffet i have seen in hotels all around the world including in america have sections of different national cuisines including chinese, japanese, european nations, an Indian section and so on. So yeah cool story bro, most hotels cater to their guests, that is, providing options for meals. It's very rare not to see some kind of noodle dish, or stir fry, or a curry at a western hotel buffet. Of course no breakfast, but thats because Asians have no fucking clue how to do breakfast. I say Asians because this is true for all Asian countries not china.
I haven't been turned away from a hotel in China (Chongching) because I booked through an online travel website. What they did was: they said that there were no seats on the bus to go back to the airport when there clearly were some left.

I've stayed at the Sheraton on the beach mentioned in the video for a friends wedding. It is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at by miles. The views from the amazing wave shaped building is spectacular and the food is perfect western standard. It must have cost a ton!

I once hosted Chinese clients when I worked in Wales. We booked them the best hotel here and paid for all their stay here but not one thing. They seemed to expect us to provide women for them? I don't know if that is normal for business arrangements but we clearly took offence to this.
