Do you have any advice for putting the focusing screen back in after the seals have been replaced? I am having trouble and am worried about breaking the camera if I apply too much pressure
Thanks so much from this video! Apart from light seal issues.. I'm also having a problem with the mirror getting locked up when I'm using a shutter speed of 1/250. Every other speed works fine. I'm using a new battery and all contacts are clean as a whistle. The interesting part is the shutter curtain opens and closes just fine so the pictured isn't ruined, but the mirror just stays locked up. The only way to bring it back down is to advance the lever like normal. Also I want to note that when placing the shutter dial on the body to the red dot, the prism shutter dial doesn't work. The metering works fine but the shutter dial doesn't change any speeds. When i fire the camera using prism shutter dial, the mirror stays locked up like there is no battery and I have to press the red button to bring it back down. Have you had this problem before or any ideas on what's going on? Thanks for your time!
I have the same problem but only at 1/125. Not a huge deal but would be lit if it didn't happen. Gonna be trying to replace the light seals myself and clean things up. I don't expect that to fix the problem.
@@adamw9326 I ripped out all the old foam seals and replaced them. I don't think the issue persists anymore after that. I think the mirror was getting stuck on the old foam as it was kinda sticky and all over the place. It was a bit of a long process but worth it.
Nice video, thanks for that. I am going to repair my camera also. There are sheets of seal in 1mm and 2mm available. Which one do you recomment? On the picture with the ruler it looks like you have chosen two kinds/ thiknesses? The link to the PDF is not more availlable.
Mr. Goodman sends the repair manual still via mail, an you will need both of the sheets. You can use the leftovers of the sheets also for your slr and other cameras.
Thanks for the video! Just picked up a 645 today and I'll tell ya, I'd like to kill the guy who formulated that foam and the engineers who decided to use it instead of a rubber gasket! The same chemical formula of foam was used for sound-deadening in IBM Selectric typewriters and if it crumbles and gets inside that complex mechanism you've got trouble. For my typewriter, I used a green self-stick felt material I got at Joann Fabrics crafts shop. I might try that instead of putting foam back in if it's sufficiently thin.
Stop! It’s such a nightmare 🤦🏻♂️ I have an old Canon AV1 with rubber seals, good as new. And yet the 6D I have (from 2011) has foam!? Weight saving maybe? Would need more accurate tolerances during production as well perhaps.
I hope the camera life after what y did because y kill it y may say it all right but that y saying it but the photos y take will say it all if y didn't fuck up don't ever changed from factory regarding the Ware
Brilliant. Thankyou. This gave me the confidence to go ahead and do it after the light seal kit had been lying in a drawer for a couple of years.
+Vincent Taylor happy to help. :)
y idiot too never change from factory
Does anyone have any clear pics of where the 3 mirror foam strips go?

Great video! I have to do the replacement my self too, can you tell me what measurements do the three strips on the mirror area have?
No video on your mirror seals??

@@kurtdoerfel7620 Thanks Kurt, I'll get the foam swapped out.

There is a full service manual PDF online, but it says nothing about the sealing.
I can't remember, but try and get both sheets just to be sure. Looks like Jim Goodman's website is down but I hear he's still reachable.

Awesome thank you !!
What mm foam did you use for the door?

+John Young they probably didn't take into account how bad it is when it degrades. :)
never change from factory idiot
My Rolleiflex has a piece of black yarn. Works fine.

Light seals HAVE to be changed when they degrade. It’s literally not that serious
light will leak to the image
...if you don't replace the old seals. I take it you're new to this "photography" thing.
never take apart if from factory sealed
out of focus
