Heard from someone that if you are displeased with your old work, it only means you’ve been improving your craft. So fun to watch you grow, Willem - truly inspiring.
It's not a rare moment, not a rare composition and no rare light. I'm not seeing it either. The same photo has been taken a thousand times with an iPhone and I see the same thing when I walk outside in the evening. But I came to accept RUclipsrs handing out handjobs to each other in comments. It comes with the territory. Bad for quality though.
@@ronaldfleischer6136 Hey man, I actually ended up selling my RB67 and I don't own a medium format camera at the moment. I do miss it though, If I was to buy one again I might go for the RZ67 or the Pentax 67 - although I think the 645 is probably a good choice too
@@JacobCrowMains Hey Jacob! I understand that, i bought a RB67 from a friend (actually my second one, the first I sold too), for a short time I had the Mamiya 645 but it had a problem and I gave it back...definitely a nice camera and well...not a tank like the RB!
Hi Willem. Couple of questions: 1. Could you share your method of archiving your work? 2. When you see an interesting location for a shot, do you list it down somewhere? And of course, thank you for another great video :)
The thing I love about the 6 x 4,5 is also the ratio aspect that is very close to the 35mm. I do not feel like a lost sheep when I switch from my 35 mm to my medium format
Willem Verbeeck The 120 film was originally designed to give eight 6X9 negatives (8-on-120), to give compactness and greater film economy, cameras were made with two red windows giving 16 6X4.5 negatives (16-on-120). With a more modern camera like this, there's no need to use red windows to locate the frames, but Mamiya (along with others) decided to take 15 exposures on each roll, to give greater spacing between the frames. For mounted colour transparencies it is all very well, but it can make negative filing tricky: a negative filing sheet made for 120 cut into four lengths would easily accommodate each length with two 6X9, three 6X6, or four 6X4.5 as long as the 6X4.5 is shot as 16-on; but each strip of Mamiya 645 negatives, if as four frames, would be too long to fit comfortably, a factor to consider.
I have been looking for more videos on this camera as I bought it literally 2 days ago, and you post this? Wow, what a blessing you are Williem. I just realized I know your pictures from r/analog. You are an inspiration. Gotta say.
Thinking about buying a 645. After watching your video I'm pretty confident it's the right medium frame camera for me (a complete novice !) Thanks a lot Paul.
RZ67 does have mirror lockup, once you screw the cable release into the socket on the lens and then press the shutter on the camera, the mirror locks up.
Just bought a Mamiya 645 Pro TL and LOVE IT! Thanks for the inspiration and great photos! Medium format is making a comeback, BABY! Well, we'll see ha ha...
It's a small detail, but I love how you describe photography as "making photos" not "taking photos". I think it's what separates "just anyone with a camera" from a true artist like yourself. Thanks for the great review, keep up the good work!
I just bought the RB67 and I haven't shot medium format before! I probably should have gone for the 645 but I'm excited anyway it'll be a learning curve.. I hope you can do a RZ67 and RB67 comparison one day :D Your photography is great!
Fyi, at 4:12, you can do long exposures with bulb mode and the shutter set to self-timer mode. First button press opens the shutter, then a second button press closes it. Not sure about the Super, but that's how it works on my Pro!
the RZ67 has a mirror lock up. thread a shutter release cable into the side of the lens, press the shutter release and it locks. take a shot by pressing down on the shutter release cable...
very nice photos there, mate! i truly appreciate that you put those in, instead of just talking head and b-roll of the gear. I'm thinking about getting that camera to shoot architecture, it's one of the smallest mf system with tilt-shift lenses.
I came VERY close to picking up a Mamiya 645. Went with a Bronica ETRS instead. I picked one up off of Ebay in absolutely mint condition for $300. These systems are just simply priced to sell. That being said, I just may have to snag one of these real quick. :-)
Damn. I think you sold me on this camera! Been looking at Fuji GAs and GWs thinking I wanted something fully auto or something that shoots 6x9. The 6x9 is a tad intimidating at first and Im afraid to waste to many shots while I learn and I think I should just stick to 35mm for full auto... This was an awesome video, glad I watched.
jacob sack not that i downvoted the video, but he meant waht he wrote. just because you like what you do it doesnt mean your work is good, i didnt like one single composition in the video
So you used two different versions of the M645 in the video. The photos taken in the diner were with the M645 1000s and the earlier night photos were with M645 Super. Do you own both of these?
Btw, if you have little electronic breadboard wirings, you can plug it on to the connector of the camera, and if I remember right you have to short the 2. and 4. pin to make a shoot. With this and with a button you can make a shutter release cable from almost nothing, in the lenght you want.
I watched this in 2020 when I was looking to buy a 645 and now I have the original m645 (not the 1000s) but I wanna upgrade to the Super. Did you have any issues with reliability? I’ve heard it can have issues with shutter and winder. I don’t plan on getting the auto winder but shutter wise it makes me a bit nervous to veer from fully mechanical. People say the Pro fixes that but I don’t like the design as much
The RZ has mirror lock-up! You need to put the cable release into the lens, this way you lock up the mirror with the normal shutter button and you shoot with the cable!
5:30 Total noob here. When he underexposes it by 2 stops, is it implied that the shutter speed is longer to compensate? Or is it done in post? Or development?
It gives them contrast and blueish fade shadows. When you underexpose film it usually give you these kind of results and sometimes it will look great and other times it will almost ruin a photo.
love the vid man! Can you do one about directing a subject during a portrait shoot? or if not directing just how you generally work during a portrait shoot? it can be awkward and often feels forced for me..
Real nitpicky point, but there are several 645 cameras that take 16 images on a roll of 120 film; Contax 645 and Fuji GA645zi to name a couple. I have no idea why you only get 15 with the Mamiya.
Hello, I think I will be seeling my RB soon to get a Mamiya 645 instead. It may fit better with my work. Does anyone know if Super and newer models are that much better than the older models like the 1000s? I do prefer a metal body like the 1000s.
Hello there! I recently found your videos and they are a true gem!! Im starting out to try using film, and I just wonder how’d you get your films developed? Do you do them yourself?
I use Hasselblad 500cm that has 6x6 frames. only few times I do miss the 6x4,5 or 7 format. I can use that format in my head if I want to. But if you try 6x6 you might find that the square format is an interesting format. among other things, the early Instagram format was square.. guess why 👍🍺 You do nice photos dude. keep on.
Hey Willem. I Think about going back to the M645 from my RB67. Did you use the 80mm 2.8 as your main lens? Cause there is the 80mm 1.9 around which is much more expensive and i am not sure if its worth it. Thanks a lot and keep doing what you doin. Christopher
The photo at 7:19 has some sort of light leak. I have the same struggle with my Mamiya RB67. It's not there the whole time. Some rolls have it and some don't. Did you figure what happend? Do you know what it could be?
same, though i usually dont mind it. its probably old/damaged light seal on the film back. also keeping the dark slide in white you rotate the back from landscape to portrait helps prevent it as well
Where can I get one of these man? Im for India so its a bit tricky here. Cheers for the videos. Love em, simple and to the point. Love the minimal vibe too.
Pretty new to medium format cameras... Wanted to know, what's the main difference between medium format film vs Digital? For example a Mamiya v Fuji gfx? Obviously one is Film and the other is digital, but is Film better than the digital formats?

If you have the money buy a Hasselblad 500 C/M it's awesome!
Man those diner portraits are beautiful. Great work man
Think I may switch from my RB67 to the 645 after watching this. the portability plus the extra 5 frames per roll is worth it

The shot of the Art Deco doors was really nice - both versions actually. But the portraits of the journalist were A+.
