“Looking good will come secondary when we feel good in our clothes”. So true! I’ve seen so many people in street style videos who I think look great, but I wouldn’t necessarily want to wear their looks. They just look confident and comfortable and in their element, and I think that’s very stylish.
Alyssa, I love how diverse the "models" are in your fashion examples! Women of color, people of size and folks who dress in what they can afford and look fabulous! Thank you!
Dressing for your mood is so true . I don’t know how many times I have picked my clothes out at night ,and then the next day I totally change my entire outfit . Love your videos !!
Alyssa, I'm a teacher. I always choose my shoes FIRST---based on the weather forecast, activities and meetings planned, whether I'm walking or driving to work, the particular group of students I have that day, after-school clubs I need to supervise, etc. Once I have my footwear selected, THEN I can pick the rest of my outfit.
The point about your fantasy self/life really resonated. I bought a pair of shocking pink tailored wide leg trousers because in my head I was striding around being all girl boss and devil may care, but in fact, I'm a retired introvert who mainly wears black and navy so those trousers are hanging there mocking me. One of these days I'm going to say to hell with it and wear them even if its just to go do the grocery shopping!! Great video as always, Alyssa.
You just described half my closet....all fantasy outfits for "one day when...."(I get invited to the Grammys, I need a brunch outfit for a yachting trip (huh?!), a big dinner party I dream of hosting when my apartment only holds two chairs.....you get the idea. Ah well, a girl can dream, but practicality wins the day.
Ahhh! A classic Alyssa style video. One in which you take a large idea (Why we don't like our closets), and break it down into functional, practical, specific ways (with illustrations!) to make use of what we DO have. Your consistent goal of shifting us away from a focus on "lack" and toward a focus on using what we already have ALWAYS makes me eager to see my closet thru yet another lens. Bravissimo! ❤
How do I get out of my rut-jeans + t-shirt worse still gym pants + t-shirt. I have other things in my closet but these don’t require me to make any decisions! I want out of this rut!!
Thank you for these tips! 😊 Totally agree with the fantasy vs function mindset. Function usually wins, and I end up wearing sneakers (or flats or boots) most days while my heels gather dust. 🤷🏼♀️
You inspire me with every new video. Watching your content for 2years now, I get compliments for my style. That has never happend before. You're so great ❤
That white dress is now living rent free in my dreams ... now I'm digging through my wardrobe and sewing patterns to see if I have anything that comes close.
Pour ma part, je commence toujours par regarder la météo, ensuite je choisi les chaussures en conséquence. Cela dictera la suite en accord avec les activités de la journée!😋
Exactly 💯 I follow my energy of the day, which basically means whether I want to feel more feminine and sexy versus I need masculine boost ( I have an important meeting and need to act strict and set firm boundaries). My next rule is to follow the function. Like you said, it all depends on my duties on that day. It all is drawn in my classy modern chic everyday style, just to use the three style descriptors. I wear dresses and skirts that style in a bunch of different ways- from elegant to sporty, depending on the function and vibe I'm in. Great video,as always❤ Love your content and I have been here with you for 5 years ❤
I love the choices between monochrome for a toned down look or using complimentary colors for contrast. I love wines and purples, or mustard and orange, giving color examples with monochrome. I also love the contrast of black and white usually featuring an interesting motif or design element to create visual interest.
Love this episode. Believe footwear is a real deal breaker brcause if all we are thinking about is how much our feet hurt (Monica in Friends and the high heal boots...) well, it really bums a gal out! Mood? Would love that but the week is decided on the Sunday and I can only pick what is already organized / ironed or I would go nuts .... Perhaps a mood for the week though? Hmmm....Always intruiging, Alyssa!❤❤Have fun wherever you are!!!!🎉Xo J
A Frenchman once told me that every french woman needs a perfect white dress for summer. They vary according to your age and build, of course. It can be thought of as the hot weather version of the Little Black Dress
Wow! Thank you for these tips! My "ah ha" moment was our Fantasy Self and purchasing for that ideal but having a different day to day function. I love the 3 tips. You showed how to dress with function in mind, but use pieces for our Fantasy Self to add fun/interest. I am inspired! 😊
1. Prepare your Outfits ahead. I usually do that sundsy evening as after the weekend I feel more creative. That way I can also setam the clothes etc. 2. Often you do not feel good in anything, because you do not feel good overall in your skin (it is human). Try to find something uplifting, like a sparkly accessory or colourful scarf. Usually those are also the things that will get you compliments
Yes! Wishful shopping is a problem. Trying to buy your way into a fantasy lifestyle or climate or comfort tolerance is just crazy. But we don’t want to just give up and wear a potato sack every day. So it takes some thinking.
Alyssa, I am 65 and satisfied with my closet as far as style and function on the day to day. That being said, I do live in the rural Midwest, but do consider myself well dressed and stylish. However, my biggest problem (and potential expense) is when traveling to specific destinations such as 3 days in Las Vegas, or 4 days in Napa Valley, or maybe even a long weekend in NYC as each or those places have a distinct style. Perhaps a little more upscale for dinner on the Strip, yet casual chic during the day. Napa is more airy and relaxed and casual during the days when visiting wineries, yet again nicer attire for dinner. NYC street style is a style all its own. Do have any suggestions for building a wardrobe for travel to destinations that are so different?
I travel carry on only, always. Pick two basic colors you enjoy (perhaps black and tan). Take separate of pants and tops or a simple dress for just 2-3 days. Take a couple of fun scarves to dress up your outfits, along with a pair of flats and a small heel--both very walkable. You can pack in a carry-on, feel simple and stylish, and get out to see the sights. She who travels light travels best and has the most fun!
@kareni8640 Yours was an interesting comment to consider. The immediate difficulty is that you/we are not travelling all the time. If we buy pieces for a specific destination, is there a risk of feeling stylish on that particular trip, but getting very little future wear out of the piece? My feeling is that your 'Three Style Words' (if you have them) may guide you in these scenarios. Anyway, here's a few thoughts 💢 • Buy one gorgeous piece for your trip (eg great boots, eye catching coat or jacket, stylish leisure set, fun hat) and let that piece be the basis for your travel wardrobe. Using classic and basic pieces from your closet to create outfits. • Borrow from friends, daughters, sisters, mothers etc for your trip. Rather than buy new. That could be a glamorous evening jacket, a statement dress, or a leather piece. Again, something that you could build a travel wardrobe around. But would be unlikely to have on high rotation at home. • If you have the time to search, you may find stylish vacation pieces on a Reseller site (like ThredUp, Depop, Poshmark, EBay etc). Having the fun of some fresh, new pieces for travel, but with less expense!
How i decide. 1st the temperature. Am i going to be in am airconditioned place or al fresco. Since i live in a tropical country, the latter means i cannot layer or wear thicker fabric. So that eliminates items already. 2nd am i gonna be walking a lot or just gonna have coffee with friends. The former means comfy flats/ sneakers. 3rd am i bloated today? If so, the formfitting clothes are eliminated. 4th from the remaining items, is there an item i haven't worn for awhile but iv been wanting to wear? Id wear that. Lastly if i'm down to 2 choices, id ask myself which can i wear even when im older? Then id wear the outfit i can't wear when im older.
Awesome ideas to use everyday. I have an issue with what to wear underneath my dress. If you can possibly do a video on should I wear a slip, share wear or my underwear along with my dress. I get so confused, but want to be comfortable and wear my dress.
Thank you. I really enjoyed this video. ❤Topic was very interesting and got me thinking more about my daily functional fashion. There has been some fantasy buying on my end. Maybe we can have an exchange party.
Hi Alyssa, love your channel. I’m 18-month pregnant and starting a new job. I’m pretty tall and skinny, but my belly started to show. I need some ideas on dressing professionally but with a little bit of belly. Can you give me some advice please?
Thank you , good things to consider . I find I change to many times a day and I can’t put any cloths back in my wardrobe once I’ve had it on , I end up with hangers of cloths on the back of the door which I may have only used for an hour or two . Am I alone ??
Hi, do you know any channels for pear shape / hourglass silluette where the creator is really in this shape and not only giving theoretical tips being superslim and proportionate themselve? And I don't mean plus size..🤔
@dzikajezyna Not to cut across Ms Beltempo's inspirational channel here. Have you seen any styling videos from Giedre Kauveniete? (That's a terrible botch of the spelling. But you'll find her.) Perhaps you will find her videos too simple if you are a fashion expert. She has worked as a stylist in her Eastern European country. She doesn't really do 'Trends'. Also, Giedre had a child a couple of years ago. So if you are young, she may be too 'young mother' for your own style 😊
@@elizabethfletcher188calm down betty. I had to watch the whole video to realize this was already content I had watched so how would I know and not watch smart pants??! Second, you called it shaming! How so? Where is the shamming in my comment? The purpose of the comment is the same as yours. To express an opinion or point of view. Do you need me to draw it out for yah?
I always check the weather and start there. Next, I determine what my day entails and choose the appropriate fabric weights, colors, shoes and accessories. It’s been triple digits here in So Cal but I need a light layer for the cold AC indoor temps so I factor that in. Tho, I still have way too many pieces, I find this above method works best for me.

As much as I love the look of heels I’ve come to accept that is just not my lifestyle and now have fun incorporating flat shoes, low heels !❤
I agree!!!
Love that!

I’m the opposite funnily enough. I’ve finally embraced heels and got out of the flats n sneakers.
