  • “Russia is in serious post-imperial decline.”
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a “huge mistake” says former head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove, “and the longer it goes on, I think the more problems the Russian leadership will face.”

If you mean a NATO military buildup on the Polish border before the invasion, yes deterrence would have worked, but that ship has sailed.Even worse was that fact that we let Russia slip into its current political state. Watch Nixon's 1992 interview where he talks about Russia. Amazing stuff.
Currently, Russia is getting bled out. Push Russia out of Crimea and you push Russia to the brink. No thanks. I don't want a Russian nuclear war or a Russian civil war.

What a statement, he is absolutely right in my humble opinion. I am from Belgium and willing to make sacrifices, already send over 6000 € from my holiday money to Ukraine over the last years to help, no holiday for me until victory. I also pushed my prime minister several times to do more. I have the feeling that our gouverments dont understand the gravity of the situation. We need someone like Churchill right now that makes tough decisions, it will cost us less in the long run if Ukraine cant hold the line any longer.

Ukraine's best chance of fully recovering all territory is if Putin's regime collapses, which can happen if we continue increasing the cost to Russia. Russia is in a cycle of perpetual escalation. That has worked well against a weak west over the past 10 years but as the west matches the escalation, Russia is now weakening itself economically politically and strategically.

It’s very simple the West should stop all trade and completely shut off countries that do not follow are basic rules of law and human rights. Ukraine rightly so wants its territory back, the west cant keep this tiptoeing up on restrictions on how ukraine decides to defend itself with NATO donated armaments, NATO needs to realise there is no way to win this without pushing putin to the limits of his nuclear threats so all parties can walk away happy in the end, difficult decisions will have to be made or it will give russia more motivation to press on, the longer we wait the worst it will get.

The main concern is if Trump regains power he will do Putins bidding and pull back on support for Ukraine. That then leaves the UK and Europe to fund defeating Putin alone.
It’s a rough spot for the UK. 14 years of stagnant Tory rule has meant we are broke with crumbling infrastructure. The need for a strong defense is still so necessary.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to imagine that whatever further ambitions he may possibly have could extend to military action against the UK. In fact there are good reasons for our two countries to enter into economic agreements and military treaties.

Sir Dearlove claims that the West “shut its eyes” to the escalation problem, but strangely omits to point out the West has itself to thank for the escalation in the first place. Sir Richard’s omission to mention, just as much as the Times’ failure to question, the need for a diplomatic resolution reveals what most now know. The hawkish warmongering and rhetoric has little to do with Ukraine and far much more to do with ramping up European and UK spending on NATO. The US can ill afford to prop up the Alliance whilst its own national debt continues to sky rocket 🚀

Yes. The soldier is an employee like any other, and needs to be looked after. I don't suppose there'd be many takers if the military offered no pensions or benefits of any kind. There's a problem now with military recruitment because of poor wages, living conditions, and benefits generally. And no, you can't put military pensions in some other bucket - it's all part of the cost of running a military.
