If you don't need the SUV ride height, the A5 sportback retains everything that makes this so great and is probably more fun to drive. I'd go with that.
There is a used A5 with manual transmission available in the market with a very reasonable price close to me. I look at it every day and wish I could afford it atm.
And guess what? Unless you live in the woods you don't need SUV ride height. And if you can afford this thing, you don't live in the woods. It's almost like 97% of SUVs shouldn't exist.
But the ride is much smoother in SUV going over bumps. I was anti SUV for quite a while and always went with wagons but as a European living in Canada I was annoyed that USA killed the wagon market for North America. So, I bought my first SUV because I love the practicality of having a hatch back where you can just easily throw in stuff while shopping or going on trips. With that said, I no longer want a lower to the ground car as my daily driver. It's smooth, relaxing on long drives, quieter and absorbs the bumps with an ease. The only time I's get a car would be my Sunday driver.
@@zedzedski7382 Depends on how the suspension is tuned, IMO. Not all SUVs are the same. We've got a CR-V and Civic hatch, both '17 models, and my wife has said that the Civic rides smoother. I like the Civic better, too, but mostly because it's not as tippy as the CR-V.
I'd have gone for S/A4 but need ride height for partner's trips to mountain skifields. The lower car would do 99% of the time even up there, but decades of the security of higher vehicles, she got the call 😁
With my A4, whenever I know I need to get off the line quickly, I'll pull the gear shift back once which will put it in sport mode. This disables the engine start/stop and also increases the idle speed from about 800 to 1000rpm. This makes a big difference when you need to dart across a couple lanes of traffic.
Try that again with traction control off, it will engage launch control if you have the gas and brake floored with the transmission in sport. I don’t remember if you need to have the Audi drive select in dynamic or not, but i do know that traction off and transmission in sport is what you need to engage it. Makes the car much quicker off the line
Yes, he has it in comfort mode, which is FWD eco mode on the Audi q5. Perfect for commuting, but not lags for economy. The dynamic sport setting is quite fast off the line, 60 comes in 5.3 seconds on the Q5 2.0t which is damn quick! Not sure how he doesn't know this..fyi the Q5 2.0t has more power than the A4, more torque..and it is VERY noticibable.
If you don't just stomp the gas pedal like a Gorilla, and use a little finesse to get the best out of the dual clutch, accelerating out of a dig is no issue
As a Q5 owner this all seems spot on. Sport mode will bump up the idle a bit and will help with the lag slightly but it also disables start / stop. If I’m going to need to pull out quickly I just bump the shifter backwards once and it’s ready to go.
I drove an Q5 as a loan vehicle a few weeks back, i have to say the ride is shockingly bad not sure air suspension helps if they were optioned. and the interior material just bad, very hard rubbery stuff on the windowline, cheap plastic near the gear lever and a nasty hole where the MMI controller used to be. It could be the loan car was just bare with no options at all, but for a car from a luxury brand, bare or not, that was unacceptable.
@@Tomoyo0827 not sure what you drove, the q5 rides excellent air suspension or no air suspension, it has no hard plastic anywhere but the lower door cards. Maybe your tires were over inflated and you got a base model loaner? Not sure but they all ride excellent.
Gotta go with the PHEV version here - fixes the turbo lag and auto stop/start issue. Also improves the weight balance and transmission smoothness so it handles better. The extra 120ish HP and torque certainly doesn’t hurt, and on lease you can drop the tax credit straight into the cost so it’s only about a grand more expensive.
Can’t get the PHEV in the Sportback in North America yet unfortunately. So, if you want the Sportback, you have to go non PHEV. I’ll bet Audi releases the Sportback PHEV in North America in 2023. You can already get that version in Europe.

Great review. I have the 2019 A5 Sportback and absolutely love it. No surprise with your feelings on the Q5 sportback. I do like having the wheel vs touchscreen in my car.
I absolutely CANNOT understand why they ditched the MMI knob and switched to a touch screen. Yes the knob has a bit of a learning curve, but it becomes second nature very quickly and is so much easier and less distracting to use. Earlier this year I had a Q5 loaner with the touch screen and absolutely hated using it. But I suppose it's not as big of a deal for car buyers who have become used to full touch screens.
Removing the wheel controller from the q5 is one of the stupidest things Audi has ever done. Also that giant screen needs to fold down somehow, it's enormous and annoying now.
@@tommcm503 Agreed - that rotary is fantastic. The attention drop when using the screen is much less than the touch option that once it becomes second nature, you can walk through the menus almost without ever leaving the eyes off the road. The strength of your comments about how good this vehicle is, comes in large part from us knowing you drive a loaded Volvo XC90. Your baseline is already high... That is the power of the compliment to Audi.
When he mentioned about the long delay when mashing the throttle, it reminded of the rental CX-5 NA I recently had. I have a 2018 Accord 2.0T. I forgot how damn responsive a good powertrain is like in the CX-5. Just a slight jab and the transmission shifted immediately and the engine was going. It reminded me of how poorly calibrated most turbo powertrains are, and Honda is no different. When I got back to my Accord I was really let down by that lack of responsiveness. I think reviewers have almost forgotten what naturally aspirated powertrains were like with smooth more linear acceleration, and while the CX-5 was dog slow, it's that feeling of control where the car responds to your input that I had missed so much, and that we've grown to accept in modern turbo cars. Yes I realize there are much better more responsive turbo powertrains than in the Accord. It's just my issue is being reinforced in this video.
Which is why I love my 2018 naturally aspirated V6 TLX and hate the 2021 2.0T TLX. (similar drivetrain as your Accord, tuned to output a bit more power, but the car is fat so it's slower than accord ...)
If you can get it, try the new Q3. It's basically the size of the old Q5, and has the perfect blend of new tech and legacy HVAC and physical buttons on steering wheel.

Audis are (and have been for over 30 years now) magnificently executed cars of extremely high quality. The only reason I will never buy one again is their complexity and difficulty of servicing makes it financially unreasonable to keep them more than 7 or 8 years. I am hopeful that due to the inherent simplicity of EVs, much of that difficulty will no longer apply to Audi and I can buy an E-Tron one day and drive it for 10 years without paying for it twice over.
EVs are simpler but batteries don't last forever. Eventually it won't hold a good charge and depending how they're integrated into the car, replacing batteries is expensive or impossible.
If you follow the maintenance schedule, 7 or 8 years is nothing for one of these cars (or anything German, frankly). I don't think a repair over that time is financially unreasonable. I drove my A4 daily for 13 years without any major issues. It all depends on the model though, some are easier to maintain than others.

I got the Q5 sportback because I think it looks a lot nicer than the regular Q5. I think the regular Q5 looks boring. Plus I don't need to haul much stuff around, thus a Sportback is perfectly fine for me. Prior to my 2022 Q5 Sportback I drove an S4 for 17 years (2004 & 2014). I was pleasantly surprised at how fast my Q5 is and really like it, not as fast as an S4 of course, but it feels a lot faster than I thought it would be.
Nice piece. appreciate the perspective. Long-time Audi owner with a 2011 Q5, 3.2 still in the garage. will look at the Q4 E tron, more likely will order the '22 SQ5. Need the V6 3.0.
Hey Mark, the big delay, in my experience, is the transmission and not the engine, and should be (mostly) resolved by switching the transmission to S, which is where I stay. D mode is flatout dangerous
Kinda splitting hairs there. Putting it in sport is adjusting engine operation to keep the turbo spooled and ready. Doesn't matter that it's a setting attached to the shifter instead of using a button elsewhere on the car
@@caribougoo349 Not at all how any of this works. Putting it in sport doesn't keep the turbo spooled (LOL) from idle. You can literally select auto or sport mode in the individual setting for transmission and leave the engine in comfort and the effect is obvious.
@@tim3172 Well what's transmission affecting beyond shift points? How does that relate to a delay off the line? Not an Audi expert but with shift by wire settings you're probably effecting every aspect of the car down to throttle mapping and steering response. Why do even the high end infotainment screens still have enormous bezels? When they start going right out to the edge, won;t all the current screens look terribly out of date?
Lmao an iPad only has to last a few years. If screens went to the edge in cars they’d all fail after a few years and Audi would have to pay a huge recall
More electronics means $$$ for repairs. A perfect vehicle has to have a 50/50 balance between old and new tech which means less things to break for someone who keeps vehicles for 10+ years which might become a thing soon.

Just signed for mine today, delivery about 10 days. Great review, as usual from you guys. Only thing I'd disagree with is the long lag off the line, our on throttle application. It wasn't there. I have this vehicle and it's quite nice to just tap down on the shifter to enable sport mode and also turns off the auto off function. Two birds one stone.
My wife had the last gen Q5. The delay to accelerate as well as stop drove me nuts. I was always yelling at the car to GO! or STOP! That, plus the huge side mirror/A pillar that my wife couldn't see around. We sold it after a year.
Sorry to hear that. My first Audi was a 2001 A6. Leased it for 3 years and had zero problems. Then got a 2004 S4. Problem free till the 9th year. Then got a 2014 S4 that was problem free till I switched to my current 2022 Q5 sport back which I really like and has been trouble free so far.
Audi's S tronic DSG almost feels like a conventional torque converter automatic. This isn't a burn, but a major praise. No other manufacturer can tune a DCT transmission to be as refined, launch and be as smooth as this.
This is a genuine and honest question. You guys seem to really hate the body style of the BMW X6. Which is completely understandable because it is extremely impractical. But what makes this body style better? Seems like you didn’t have much negative feedback for this body style in comparison to the x6. Thanks!
Hey Mark- the delay which haunts VAG products is due to double clutch transsmision being in neutral while stopped. It doesnt work like typical slushbox from stop. It takes time to engage and slip clutch + turbolag you mentioned doesnt help probably too.

I was pleasantly surprised at how fast my Q5 is and really like it, not as fast as an S4 of course, but it feels a lot faster than I thought it would be.
10:34 That Patagonia hoodie is fire. 🔥
Never seen such a premium honey of an automobile, can’t wait to be showing off to the home owner association in my little suburb of copeville.
2:37 I love these segments of the videos 🤣
Audi really does present an excellent product.
Opening sequence was very well-done!! Even makes a tall jacked-up station wagon look attractive. Well done!
They removed the MMI and replaced it with cubby holes designed for nothing instead of redesigning.
Nice piece. appreciate the perspective. Long-time Audi owner with a 2011 Q5, 3.2 still in the garage. will look at the Q4 E tron, more likely will order the '22 SQ5. Need the V6 3.0.
Wait for the Q6 etron shared with the electric Macan platform. Should be an RS version that melts faces
@@schmoestudy Joe, thanks, good idea.
Hey Mark, the big delay, in my experience, is the transmission and not the engine, and should be (mostly) resolved by switching the transmission to S, which is where I stay. D mode is flatout dangerous
I agree, the delay in D vs tapping it down into S is crazy significant
Kinda splitting hairs there. Putting it in sport is adjusting engine operation to keep the turbo spooled and ready. Doesn't matter that it's a setting attached to the shifter instead of using a button elsewhere on the car
@@caribougoo349 No, sport mode does not meaningfully impact RPM at idle
@@caribougoo349 Not at all how any of this works.
Putting it in sport doesn't keep the turbo spooled (LOL) from idle.
You can literally select auto or sport mode in the individual setting for transmission and leave the engine in comfort and the effect is obvious.
@@tim3172 Well what's transmission affecting beyond shift points? How does that relate to a delay off the line?
Not an Audi expert but with shift by wire settings you're probably effecting every aspect of the car down to throttle mapping and steering response. Blaming transmission just cause a setting is tied to a shifter isn't accurate
I don't care for Audi's but your vids made my Monday morning. Keep up the savagery.
Nice review. But I'm going with the 2022 Honda Civic "Sportback" with a manual transmission for $25k. And with the money I save I'll get a BRZ as my weekend car.
You and all the blacks and Mexicans 😂
Great job! This review really helped me with narrowing my choices and making a buying decision. This car is in my top three group. Thank you for all that you do for us.
Couldn't help but be reminded of the Will Ferrell SNL skits where he's eating dinner with his family, and they keep disrespecting him so he yells things like, "I AM A REGIONAL MANAGER!!!"
This was one of those cars that I had no idea existed until I saw one on on the road
Why do even the high end infotainment screens still have enormous bezels? When they start going right out to the edge, won;t all the current screens look terribly out of date?
Durability. The amount of vibration and potential wear these screens will take over time is incredible.
Lmao an iPad only has to last a few years. If screens went to the edge in cars they’d all fail after a few years and Audi would have to pay a huge recall
@@markm0000 most Audis fail after a few years
@@wigletron2846 lol
More electronics means $$$ for repairs. A perfect vehicle has to have a 50/50 balance between old and new tech which means less things to break for someone who keeps vehicles for 10+ years which might become a thing soon.
Im sorry but was lash out real ? 🤣😂😂 Because that was some good acting. Its funny how I was just talking about the SQ5 sportback being a urus alternative to save 100k
God I cant wait for you to review the new c8 z06. My body is ready for the high quality content you do.
The infotainment touch screens are even more responsive when you turn off haptic feedback, which I prefer. Give it a go next time you're in one SG.
This was a pleasant surprise. When I saw this on the road I thought it looked like a pregnant armadillo. But for the money it is an suv I’d consider, versus something like a Ford Explorer which is similar money.
I would take a VW Atlas and enjoy the extra room to sneeze & carry groceries along with using the $5k savings & go on a nice 2 week vacation 🤷🏽♂️
That back is so sporty.
I could not stop laughing !!! I had to watch that scene over and over again ,he reminds me of Kevin Spacey when he blows up except without the boy issues , great video !!!!
Audi doing what Audi does
i love the interior, its so uniform not too flashy
"When I put,....John and Suzy, my two eldest kids at 3 and 7 in the back,..." - Gold
These last few videos have found me eyeing the infotainment screens pretty closely; I’ve gotta say I’m enjoying our featured music! I’m thinking we’re gonna need a Savagegeese bluegrass playlist to drop on Spotify.
“The 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback turns all stop signs into yields. Feel the prestige.”
A very *Professional* environment!
I always respect your evaluations. I have the 2021 Q5 45 TSFI and I was surprised by the actual power of the 4 Cylinder turbo. I feel safe and have enough power. Very quiet and smooth to drive. It's hard to scare anyone with this. Although, I wish I had my 2018 S5 back. Almost regretted the sale as soon as I got home with the New Q5. But, it's an Audi!!!@!
You should get an Emmy Award for the consistent outbursts of Corporate Executive Rage
"beautiful silver grey" you know like 90% of the other 3 colors on the road because this world we live in is nothing but boring, dreary darkness of Black, White and Grey.
Thanks Goose! I'd be curious to see if the SQ5 stirs your soul a little more.
Having a press car in green or blue would help..as well as beige or brown interior ! This color combo puts ppl to sleep !
At 2:40 the Savagegeese becomes the AngryGoose. Got damn it, I love this channel!
I was eating when Mark started randomly raging on Jack about the papers. Almost died choking on my food 😅😂
Get a load of Johnny Business during the interior impressions!
Of all the episodes I have watched, I have never heard Mark use "terrific" in any of the videos. I believe that I'm losing my mind...
The modern Q5 is truly great for what it is. Drive the competitors and then get in a Q5..even the X3 is a let down.
That being said, you might not.
I was starting to wonder when the Business Man was going to come back
Damn that intro song! When's the PartyNextDoor collab coming?
Truly think audis make the best allrounder between MB, BMWs and themselves
Really appreciate your reviews..and humor! Look forward to hearing what you have to say about the 2023. Caught some spy pics of the upcoming 2024 NEW center console. Looking similar to the 2024 VW Atlas Sport console. Time will tell.
Do those acoustic/NVH panels have any effect at keeping the car clean and less prone to road salt damage? I have always wondered this. ???
The intro was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯 baby
Audi transmissions are really well put together.
So Mr Goose is getting some acting skills now? This man can do it all.
Just signed for mine today, delivery about 10 days. Great review, as usual from you guys. Only thing I'd disagree with is the long lag off the line, our on throttle application. It wasn't there. Maybe different emissions tuning? Downsizing from an MY 19 Touareg V6S this is a lot smaller, but fit for my purposes now I'm not towing a race car and servicing at the track. In Glacier White with the black optics, it's a sharp greatlooking SUV crossover 👍
Did you get a good deal? I just signed for mine 10 days ago. The OTD price was almost 8k below the MSRP.
That turbo lag is killer. Though I put my B9 A4 in Sport mode and avoid that horrible degree of lag altogether. It works well.
I have this vehicle and it's quite nice to just tap down on the shifter to enable sport mode and also turns off the auto off function. Two birds one stone.
The songs has up during interior montages. They are supposed to be funny. But lately it’s all stuff I like…
This concerns me
My wife had the last gen Q5. The delay to accelerate as well as stop drove me nuts. I was always yelling at the car to GO! or STOP! That, plus the huge side mirror/A pillar that my wife couldn't see around. We sold it after a year.
She couldn't see around my huge A-pillar either.
My OCD triggered by low fuel and low tire pressure lights on. lol
Great interior. I used to love Audis until I owned one. Blown rear oil seal at 30K miles. Never again.
My 2018 SQ5 is amazing... fun to drive and amazing... that 3.0 V6 blows this 2.0 V4 away. Don't buy new.. save $$$ buy used if you can find one!
V4?
I'm pretty sure Saab and AMC are the only somewhat-mainstream manufacturers to have sold a V4 in the US, champ.
@@tim3172 Yeah.. my mistake... meant 4 cylinder... but, you knew what I meant. :)
Great thoughts on this car, cheers
I think there’s a typo at the beginning. It says Audi QS5 Sportback. Isn’t it just a Q5 Sportback?
pretty clean looking cuv... GV70 is more my style but this is classy.
This is a genuine and honest question. You guys seem to really hate the body style of the BMW X6. Which is completely understandable because it is extremely impractical. But what makes this body style better? Seems like you didn’t have much negative feedback for this body style in comparison to the x6.
Thanks!
I think they just hate how it looks but the GLE Coupe is even worse
So pairing the phone kills the rear view camera? Audi and electronic issues goes together like SG and soy injection complications.
When can you guys review the new S class
Hey Mark- the delay which haunts VAG products is due to double clutch transsmision being in neutral while stopped. It doesnt work like typical slushbox from stop.
It takes time to engage and slip clutch + turbolag you mentioned doesnt help probably too.
It’s the auto start stop system mostly.
The perfect crossover to yell at the manager in
Great car for lease?
An Audi is a lease-only car-there aren’t many that go reliably into long-term ownership.
Great job Mark. While not as reliable, there is no doubt the Germans offer a more exciting driving dynamic. I’d still take a Lexus for peace of mind.
"The king of blending in"!🤣
Unbelievable that this STARTS under the average sale price of $45k for a new car. I was ready to be blown away by the price but I can't be bothered.
..the bare bones starting price is silly ! At that point, folks are buying this thing for the badge and that’s it !
Sir this is an Audi not a Hyundai.
This is not cheap. You need +$60K for a proper model.
Awesome and objective review as always 👍. Can you do a review of the 2021/22 BMW X3 and compare it with the Audi Q5 @savagegeese?
Nice sportback , but i would lease it to be on the safe side to avoid major repairs.
This looks like BMW in many aspects, which is a plus for me. Also, I love your new sweater!
BMW is garbage
