The X4 has one big disadvantage: the looks with small wheels... if it had wider summer tires it would look completely different and much better! I’d take the X4 over the SQ5 because of the engine and the driving dynamics and real exhausts...

In replacing the S4, considered both of these SUVs. The Audi is elegant, but without question, it’s sort of numb, although the steering is improved from prior years (comfort mode is dull, not comfortable). The review herein is right on re: BMW X4 Msport40i. Custom ordered X4 is now in my garage. Every day, it brings giggles of joy to my wife, and I cannot stop smiling. It’s a combination of an Audi (exterior looks aside), quiet SUV, and M car. It’s just amazing. I think older people will like the Audi, and younger and/or more experienced drivers will go for the X4. The X4 M40i and SQ5 are very similar. The SQ5 has an excellent interior and the controls are intuitive! The Audi Digital Dash is amazing! Quattro AWD is slightly better in snow than the X drive. The SQ5 ride is excellent too! The M40i is a touch faster but only in Sport Plus! The rear seat in the X4 does not have good headroom because of the sloping roof line. Lastly, I feel the cost of ownership will be slightly higher in the BMW as well over the long term. The Audi SQ5 is my choice with the 21" wheel upgrade for a daily driver! I do need to drive a X3 M40i though because it is definitely better looking than the X4 in my opinion. And with the Burger JB4 module on the M40i, it will be an absolute beast!!!!!

Audi interiors are awesome, They have shocked me lately BUT BMW driving experience is better among. They feel more sharp and engaging to drive. Some can be a bit stiff but they are planted and hug the road. Also their i6 engines are super reliable. As for audi, They seem more comfortable and their interior is better put together. They really have great interiors, you have to see in person to appreciate. Their exteriors is a matter of taste in my opinion. some are better than bmw some are not depending on the models. they sedans are oversized A4s. I have always preferred the ultimate driving machine. I can forgive its interior looks because of joy fun personality they have.
BMW X4 has character and personality. Can't be missed on the road. Will turn heads unlike all other suvs. All other suvs look the same. Normal is boring. In the end when you drive all that matters is whether it puts smile on your face and here too X4 wins.
BMW has been playing a game lately with HP. While most auto manufactures rate HP to the crankshaft, BMW is doing it to the wheels. So, whenever you read about BMW stated HP add at least 30HP when comparing it to others.
I passed on the X4 M40i because I couldn't convince myself BMW has addressed all the longevity issues of a BMW. And bought the SQ5.... it's been a dream.
Why don't you use launch mode in the Audi? Every ZF 8 speed transmission should have it. 1. Engine must be warmed up 2. Wheels straight 3. Turn off traction control 4. Place into dynamic mode or select sport 5. Press brake for a couple of seconds 6. Apply throttle and the revs should stop short of 3k 7. Release brake within 5 seconds. The shift points raise up from if you just floor it from a standstill as well.
Just got the m40i. The most satisfying car that I owned in a while. I actually waited till the full m arrived to compare... I guess I will now have to figure out what to do with 30k that I saved.
from what I've read on MotorTrend and CardandDriver, X3 M40i has a harsher ride than the Audi and lower a skidpad score number of .87-.88 vs SQ5 .93. But that Audi had sports air suspension which lowered it by over 1 inch.
I own the Audi and it does have ambient light that you can customize colors and a heads-up display with the carbon fiber. It's looks better inside and out than anything in it's class. That BMW sounds great though. Time to upgrade my exhaust.
I'm about to purchase the 2022 x4m40i. To me, it's one of the most beautiful vehicles on the road. Drives like a dream....so fun Trading in my Macan S. Can't wait to get into BMW and out of my Porsche.
@@jamison258 I had to have the transfer case replaced for the 2nd time on a car with only 27k miles. It’s a known problem on Macan and Cayenne models. Supposedly they improved the part but my 2ns transfer case only lasted 2 years and 9k miles. Porsche customer service was lacking as well. Not a premium brand experience IMO.
Crna Ruka ahahahahahahah you’re funny man. Yeah I am thinking of buying this potentially. Audi has been my favorite engineering since I was a boy and I always loved the Audi A4, since I am naturally fan of cars. A4s was just a good looking car to me. However, my dad always advised me to get an SUV for the snow but I always WASNT with it due to the fact that I saw SUVs as being too bulky. Upon this release of the new Q5 and SQ5, it is very aesthetically pleasing and I wouldn’t mind driving it since it is a very neat SUV. Even the past models looked neat, but these models are sleek behind belief due to the new crossover trends.
Omar H BMW is better than Audi 100% But I am not underestimate Audi because their bigger models like sq7-8 are nicer. Regarding x4 is ugly but yes is better than sq5!! The nicest models of BMW are X5-7 and 7-8 series, the rest are lower class!! I hate cross sizes like x4, Macan, t-rock, Glc, sq5 ext. Definitely BMW from x1 and up in terms of specs is the best in the world. (Just not for the sizes like vw golf and x1 ) not every company is perfect everywhere!!! The same for Mercedes: all SUV except G class are a piece of crap in front of the others( I am not going into detail, if you sit in and drive it you will understand it, drives like a VAN). But Mercedes other models like S class and saloon are totally great. Regarding the Japanese’s and Korea cars I have a feeling they have lower their class a lot and are very ugly. I liked the Japanese cars of 90s.

I feel like the X4 is quite a bit better looking on the outside, and the SQ5 is slightly worse looking. I'm not sure what that means, but come to think of it, I'm not sure what either of these cars means... 🤔
Alexander Damberg Never said it wasn't, but "modern" is a vague term. In regards to tech? Sure, the Audi is superior. But I think in design, the BMW foreshadows what SUVs are becoming, whether we like it or not.
I don't really like that SUV-coupe style, although Porsche and Audi really hit the spot on that. But in this particular situation, I'd go for the SQ5 anyday.
James picked the SQ5 pretty much purely on the basis of its styling, despite finding the X4 M40i more excting, faster and better sounding, which for him kinda of made running this test pointless!
Nice video! New wheels, HF carted downpipe and a tune make the SQ5 a totally different car. Same can be said for the BMW but it sure is ugly. As others have said, the X3 would be a good comparison.
If they would've got the SQ5 with the Dynamic Steering option and S Sport Package option, there would've been a big difference in the handling and feel. Especially powering through & out of corners. The S Sport Pkg gives the quattro Sport Rear Differential. Those 2 options would've balanced the price of the two SUV's. The SQ5 used in this video was less expensive and potentially not "opted up" the way the BMW may have been.
Considering the SQ5 is 1/2 the cost of basically the same thing in Porsche form, is a bargain relatively speaking. The cost of a "base" cayenne with like, 2 options is absurd.
Why didn't you guys test them 0-100 and quarter-mile?! I was impatiently waiting for this part it would be very interesting to see :( Please add these part to your future comparison videos 0-100, 100-0, quarter mile and 40-120 beside each other... Then it would be the perfect comparison video ever!

SQ5 feels lethargic compared to my bmw X3 M40i. I had a 2015 Audi S3 and needed a larger vehicle. Was all set to get the SQ5 but then I test drove it. SQ5 felt sloppy and lethargic and was much slower than my Audi S3. I decided that SUVs weren't for me based off that experience. I decided to test drive the BMW X3 3.0i. That car felt so much more composed than the Audi SQ5 that I immediately placed an order for the m40i. Took that delivery of the m40i and was not disappointed. The m40i is faster than my Audi S3 while the SQ5 is slower. These reviewers aren't pointing out that there is a huge difference in performance. @@nohackn Cut them out and put tips on. I would give up a car I like just because of fake exhaust. Look at the ones in the older X5. With the tips sticking out and turned down, they look like a glory hole, and people still bought them.
I prefer the MB GLC 43 or 63
And why aren’t you comparing it to the X3 m40i ..instead?
But those fake bumper-exhaust must be their solution to emission control? And pretend a “greener” car?
F*** horrific!!! Even worse than the fake exhaust SOUND from them Beamers.
"A steering wheel as thick as my ex." Ha!! Love it.
I was gonna say am I the only one that heard that! 😂
BMW X4 has character and personality. Can't be missed on the road. Will turn heads unlike all other suvs. All other suvs look the same. Normal is boring. In the end when you drive all that matters is whether it puts smile on your face and here too X4 wins.
Turns heads? this x4 is the ugliest bmw I've ever seen
X4 for me allday errrday! ///M thank you!! 👌🏾although he clam he likes the Audi better , that smile the bimmer gave him is what it’s all about!!
Sublime review! I’d take the x4 over the hideous SQ5 in a heartbeat tho
the x4 is mad ugly
the "cross over coupe" format is the most idiotic available.. the X4 sucks purely for that reason :)
BMW has been playing a game lately with HP. While most auto manufactures rate HP to the crankshaft, BMW is doing it to the wheels. So, whenever you read about BMW stated HP add at least 30HP when comparing it to others.
more like 50 HP depending on the model
@@crustyrustymayo4716 Do you have more info on that? I'm just curious, which models?
@@reactor4 idk but M5 and cars like m140i and m240i feels like they got an additional 50 Hp more than they are marketed.
@@crustyrustymayo4716 I have a X3 M40i and BMW states 350HP. It does 0-60 is in between 4.4 and 4.8. I'm going to be the true HP of this SUV is 410+
@@reactor4 Test it, dyno
I passed on the X4 M40i because I couldn't convince myself BMW has addressed all the longevity issues of a BMW. And bought the SQ5.... it's been a dream.
Why don't you use launch mode in the Audi?
Every ZF 8 speed transmission should have it.
1. Engine must be warmed up
2. Wheels straight
3. Turn off traction control
4. Place into dynamic mode or select sport
5. Press brake for a couple of seconds
6. Apply throttle and the revs should stop short of 3k
Ones a sports car jacked up the other is a luxury yet functional SUV, take them both off road to note that the Audi is actually an SUV
This could be decided on the engine alone. The BMW unit is far superior.
squala not interior doe
That BMW'S SOUND IS CRAZY!
It's probably tuned.

-25 but warmed up with a TH video. Thanks guys. I’m partial to the Audi. More subtle
Ive heard tons of good things about the Macan. What made you get out of it for an m40iv
@@jamison258 I had to have the transfer case replaced for the 2nd time on a car with only 27k miles. It’s a known problem on Macan and Cayenne models. The 2nd replacement was out of warranty and cost over $3k. Disappointed in Porsche not standing behind their product when they know the part is defective. Supposedly they improved the part but my 2ns transfer case only lasted 2 years and 9k miles. Porsche customer service was lacking as well. Not a premium brand experience IMO.
Love the dramatic opening scenes
The Audi SQ5 does actually have ambient lighting
Crna Ruka Is the ambient lighting standard in the Q5 or SQ5? And if not, what package?

X3 M40i is the winner. Better looks and no fake exhaust
So much uglier, it looks like a lifted 3 series. I'll agree with you with the fake exhaust. But Audi will always win the interior.
John Qiu? And BMW will win driving. Case closed
X5 i50 has fake tips and upcoming M340. It’s a new trend
Totally agreed. Can’t accept the rear of this X4 and don’t really want to wait for the new M340i so I got the X3 M40i last week.
The bmw is so ugly🤮
You guys are the best ! I’ve just found your channel, and after just watching 1 video subscribed immediately. Congrats and keep the good job !
Supposed to meet up with friends in 30 mins. But I saw Throttle house. I'll still make it there in time! Priorities XD
We are all friends here
Bmw for life 👌👌👌
Omar H BMW is better than Audi 100%
But I am not underestimate Audi because their bigger models like sq7-8 are nicer.
Ioannis stavrou Eh I respect your opinion but I think Audi is better.
I prefer X3 over X4. Coupe-styled SUV/Crossovers suck
13:40 Audi's have ambient lighting
Only in Prestige level for Q5.. which are not only hard to find.. but $6000 more expensive!
pesto12601 you pay 6000 for a trim, not for the ambient lighting bud lol, but the lights come with the trim with way more other features.
@@nadeem727 Well.. obviously you get MORE in the prestige package than just the lighting. The point is - many folks want the ambient lighting (which really should be in P+ as well for high asking price) and don't care about the rest.
@@pesto12601 ok well true but the Q5 is literally 10k cheaper than the X4 and i would pick it and save 10k and get more tech and features still without the ambient lights
The Audi is a ballet, while the BMW is a square dance.
sq5 is probably one of the best cars i have ever driven only car i enjoyed driving around in for daily and sporty use was the model 3
1st time watching you guys and I have to say I enjoyed it great review and funny too
I don’t know, the BMW interiors just don’t impress me
Never did for me, but the cabin compliments the driving so well. It’s very intentional
Well I think there really nice especially the new g20
They are pretty incredible they just are not 'showy' in pictures or reviews. The quality, fit, finish, and impeccable attention to detail and the most important - DRIVER FOCUSED - cabin, its probably the best in class if you love driving, which, for cars like these, you most likely do.
@@michaelmesolellaesq yeah you have to sit inside one to be astonished by how well the dash feels and the leather on the steering wheel. Especially the comfort of the seats, BMW has more seat options for their cars unlike Mercedes. I like Mercedes interior layout but love BMW interior feel and quality which automatically wins me over
@@emadmahmood3268 my M Comp seats are honestly the best driving chair I have ever sat in. Way more options and flexibility in a BMW cabin and build out, especially if you are ordering the car. MB and Audi lock you into these dark, drab, odd colors that really do not do the car any favors imo
BMW is killing it. I love mine. Cannot beat it with staggered 21's and the adaptive M Suspension
21s are stunning. I have 20s and love it. 😍👍
@@bh4560 I no longer have the car, went to the X3M Comp, those 21's on the M performance model are gorgeous and one of my favorite BMW rims, but, they were literally impossible to clean. I use the 20's for winter. Enjoy !
SQ5 is my daily and and M4 is my fun car. I do admit I'm more than impressed with the SQ5 it is exceeding my expectations all around.
Why did you choose over X3?
Thumbs up just for that brilliant intro lol. The rock climbing wall 👌
Yes OK I’m not a fan of the back end of the BMW X4 but in my heart BMW always wins sorry BMW haters
You guys are funny, I’ll take the SQ5.
Thx for your content! Im not the biggest Fan of SUVs, but your comparisons are always great stuff for me! 😄
Plenty of Not-SUVs to come, Matt!
I love BMW's! I finally traded my Acura in for a bmw, despite all the reliability talk I hear! And I love it.
Q5 for sure
I like these comical reviews, and funny intros
I feel like the X4 is quite a bit better looking on the outside, and the SQ5 is slightly worse looking. I'm not sure what that means, but come to think of it, I'm not sure what either of these cars means... 🤔
Antonio Zamudio Damn, I already wear glasses.... Guess I'll have to update my prescription... 😂
x4 is mad ugly
JAX the sq5 is a much more modern car Then the bmw
Alexander Damberg Never said it wasn't, but "modern" is a vague term. In regards to tech? Sure, the Audi is superior. But I think in design, the BMW foreshadows what SUVs are becoming, whether we like it or not.
Antonio Zamudio everyone has his own opinion 🤦🏻♂️
The Audi SQ5 has ambient lighting too. Color lighting are on the prestige model.
I have a 2018 SQ5. My wife has a 2017 Cayenne GTS. I can't ever get excited about driving my car.
JC NVA why?
JC NVA why bro ? I’m addicted to driving my sq5 it can literally turn in between a race car or a quiete suv at anytime
You do know the sq5 and macan gts are similar right
What I love most in x4 is how fast start it is
I don't really like that SUV-coupe style, although Porsche and Audi really hit the spot on that. But in this particular situation, I'd go for the SQ5 anyday.
Can't get past BMW's new look. Ended up going with a 18 SQ5. Love the subtlety of the thing.
X4 is ugly I'd take the X3 looks more proportional.
These intros are life
I love how the X4 looks from every angle
James picked the SQ5 pretty much purely on the basis of its styling, despite finding the X4 M40i more excting, faster and better sounding, which for him kinda of made running this test pointless!
bullshit he loved the ride and interior of the s5, and the x4 does look exceptionally ugly(even though itd probably be my choice)
my vote goes to the Audi better exterior and interior nice episode though thanks
BMW over Audi every day of the week.
Wrong
Agreed
Absolutely.
M50B25 Turbo
Of course!!!
I see no lies told....
That X4 truly has a face that only a mother could love.
Yeahhhh cuz the upside down clothes line look a lot better...lol
Middle child
That intro......
Absolute comedy gold lmao
I prefer the exterior look of the BMW so it looks like it’s the clear winner.
Nice video! New wheels, HF carted downpipe and a tune make the SQ5 a totally different car. Same can be said for the BMW but it sure is ugly. As others have said, the X3 would be a good comparison.
Every week I keep forgetting about the throttle house, make it every day like 'carwow' does and you'll get 10m. subcribers really quick.
that intro got me dying lol
As an X6 50i owner I can say, congratulations for correctly saying what most engines that identify as “Twin Turbo” truly are, “twin scrolled”.
I hate the way the bmw looks, I would pick the Audi anyday
Joshua Burke your opinion 👍🏻😄 I actually like the BMW a bit more
I bet you pick your nose too.
Kidding ;)
@@noelhill7766 😂😂
Love that you drove the cars first, then did the interior. 👍
The SQ5 sounds like when a mom it's late for picking their sons after soccer.
I prefere audi more than bmw
They both do
If they would've got the SQ5 with the Dynamic Steering option and S Sport Package option, there would've been a big difference in the handling and feel. Especially powering through & out of corners. The S Sport Pkg gives the quattro Sport Rear Differential.
Those 2 options would've balanced the price of the two SUV's. The SQ5 used in this video was less expensive and potentially not "opted up" the way the BMW may have been.
I agree. 👍👍👍
Drove both. Bought the Audi.
2019 SQ5?
Considering the SQ5 is 1/2 the cost of basically the same thing in Porsche form, is a bargain relatively speaking. The cost of a "base" cayenne with like, 2 options is absurd.
Why didn't you guys test them 0-100 and quarter-mile?! I was impatiently waiting for this part it would be very interesting to see :(
Please add these part to your future comparison videos 0-100, 100-0, quarter mile and 40-120 beside each other... Then it would be the perfect comparison video ever!
Best intro hands down
If i want a car that'll put a massive smile on my face and that's have been known for sportness, ill go with the BMW obviously
I've been a fan of throttle house for a long time and let me tell you lmfao this is one of the best intros ever, let's go audi Quattro
SQ5 for me
Love the intro as usual!
you also have to consider that BMW's 340 hp is more like 340 hp at wheel :)
Oh my God , what a superb comparison video , you made it really good , so fun to watch , i was smiling whole time , i like this 1 bhp more tags , also james was good at dailogues . BUT Thomas my boy , you floored it mate , right from the start of video with drama of getting bored to explaining Audi , with all the boot up down competition, that was so much fun . 1 bhp more you are bro , really awsome. Jeremy Clarkson level awsome . This the first video i have seen from this channel but i am so impressed, i subscribed and liked the video before i finised watching it , keep making such awsome videos , good bless you guys , Thanks
My X3 m40i and this X4 will flat-out destroy the SQ5 in any performance measure
I'm assuming the Audi S3 was on a stock tune? Because a simple software tune completely transforms that car. I've now been looking into SUVs for the future and SQ5 was the default but now I'm looking towards the x4 m40i
Until you have to turn
@@joelrcv18 The S3 is nose heavy. Engine is positioned in front of the axle. The car under-steered. it probably did handle better than the BMW but I didn't feel like I was missing much.
@@FU-Utube Did you get the BMW? Sorry I missed your message. Yes, the S3 was stock but I was worried about warranty issues. Not that I haven't had ECU's flashed before on cars under warranty :)
